Review: Anyone who takes their old-skool hip-hop seriously knows Main Source were the real deal, and their 1991 album Breaking Atoms remains one of the greatest albums in the genre. While there was an eventual follow-up in 1994, hip-hop folklore has often spoken of their shelved 1992 LP The Science. Bar the odd bootleg single or demo here and there, the album has never been heard but now a major missing piece in the story of early 90s rap is being put back into its rightful place, as P-Vine present the first ever release of The Science, cut from the group's own master tapes and guaranteed to be a new favourite for anyone who values the golden age of beats and rhymes.

Review: In the annals of East Coast hip-hop, Main Source's The Science is one of the great lost treasures. After K.Cut, Sir Scratch and Large Professor laid down the template with their seminal Breaking Atoms in 1991, they recorded a swift follow up and had it complete and ready for release when Professor left the group and the album was shelved. The Science was under lock and key and never even saw a bootleg circulation, which means this first ever release of the album is monumental news for anyone who values the golden age of hip-hop. It's as good as you'd expect and this edition comes with a bonus 7" loaded with another two exclusive tracks.

Review: Lovers of the famous East Coast hip-hop sound out of the States will have long been dial into this cornerstone classic, Dah Shinin', by Brooklyn duo Smif-N-Wessun. With help from the Da Beatminerz production crew, it is a timeless record with plenty of jazz and reggae flourishes thank to the great samples while the hardcore bars and beats have a real underground edge. MCs Tek and Steele are in perfect form over the 16 tunes and guest slots from Black Moon also bang. This is one no hip hop head should ever be without.

Large Professor (3:11)
Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Snake Eyes (3:33)
Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

He Got So Much Soul (He Don't Need No Music) (3:37)
Review: After the breakaway success of their monumental debut album Breaking Atoms, Main Source came correct with 'Fakin' The Funk', a single in between albums which called out anyone not true to the roots of hip-hop. Now P-Vine are continuing their run of choice 7"s drawing on Main Source's legacy with a tasty repress of this classic joint, backed up with a cut from Breaking Atoms for good measure. 'He Got So Much Soul (He Don't Need No Music)', another stellar example of the realest deal from the golden era of rap.

Review: Wild Pitch Records was eventually the label that showcased to the world the Queens native Large Professor and Toronto's Sir Scratch and K-Cut as Main Source. But before that, the pair actually self-released their debut on Actual Records, and it went on to become a hard to find, much in demand 12". The greatness that was to come was hinted at on the music with superbly concise raps and tight production that made for two faultless singles. 'Think' takes plenty of well known samples but makes them sound fresh and 'Atom' does the same, with humour, bragging and positivity all colouring the bars.

Review: When Main Source recorded "Fuck What You Think", the belated follow-up to their 1991 classic "Breaking Atoms", lead MC Large Professor had already left for pastures new. The album was recorded and prepared for release in 1994 and was meant to prove their staying power despite line-up changes; in the end, it finally hit stores in 1998 following the band's break-up. Here reissued on white vinyl with a smattering of bonus tracks and a 10" booklet featuring new artwork and liner notes, it feels like a lost '90s boom-bap gem. It's of historical interest, too, featuring as it does early appearances by Queens MC Mikey D, and the members of LOX (who would later make an impact on Bad Boy Records).
