Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Alan Dixon launches his brand new label Love Attack, the Multi Periodic Oscillations EP being a three tracker from Man Power at his curious techno best. Deep, dark and dubby, not to mention suitable for 3am needs everywhere, it opens with 'Cepheid Variable Part 1', 11 minutes of twists and turns, revolving around a hypnotic groove. Its baby brother 'Part 2' keeps the vibes intact before 'Applegate Mechanism' closes the EP in a straight up dancefloor fashion. Keep your eyes on Love Attack, with many more releases lined up for the next year.

Jigsaw Thinking (6:51)
What A Puny Plan (5:35)
Big Sue Wonderland (7:35)
Review: Man Power is a hard to categorise artist who is hell-bent on staying independent and doing things his own way. The Geordie powerhouse runs a couple of his own labels but here finds himself on Echocentric. From cosmic disco to dancefloor tech and plenty in between, Man Power has done it all yet he still manages to find new ground once again here with four cuts of brilliantly original deep house sounds that call on a whole new world of references, mostly from outer space and rave days gone by. 'Jigsaw Thinking' is bright in its melodic makeup, 'What A Puny Plan' has a far-sighted astral gaze and 'Big Sue Wonderland' is an electrifying mix of fizzing synths and singing leads that tingle every sense in your body.

Tachyon (10:45)
Tachyon (DJ Tennis remix) (10:21)
Review: Mexico-based Geordie Man Power has been on the rise for some time, picking up plaudits for the quality of his releases on Throne of Blood, ESP Institute, Hivern Discs and Correspondant. Now, he's decided to go it alone, launching the MeMeMe label as a vehicle for his own productions. "Tachyon" is something of a sleazy, late night treat, with the British ex-pat concentrating the action around a deliciously dirty, mutant Italo arpeggio, nagging electronic loops, and punchy drum machine percussion. DJ Tennis takes the track in a different direction on the flip, smothering Man Power's sleazy groove in melodious marimba lines, drowsy chords and elastic electronics.

The Tourist

The Tourist (8:58)
Oye (8:26)
Review: According to Lovefingers' typically eccentric sales notes, these two tracks from Man Power (AKA similarly quirky producer Geoff Kirkwood) will "put a wrench in your holiday". Kirkwood has been globetrotting a lot lately, and both cuts here sound like they were inspired by visits to hot, steamy countries. He kicks things off with the subtle positivity of "The Tourist", where swirling chords and tumbling synthesizer melodies ride a busy, bouncy, and pleasingly off-kilter, tribal drum groove. While excellent, it lacks the surging positivity, glistening Balearic touches and wonky analogue bottom-end of flipside "Oye", which sounds like an Adriatic anthem in waiting.

Blue Suite (Willie Burns Nobody But Myself remix) (5:05)
Review: The only concrete thing we know about the Man Power outfit is that it releases some pretty heavy s***, the kind of s*** we love to get down to here at the Juno emporium. The Throne Of Blood label returns with yet more of its oddities and downright outsider flavours with "Trans", a gorgeous house tune which uses its synths to propel you off the dancefloor and into deep space; the nugget is rewired by Discodromo into more of a disco piece of the italo variety. On the flip, "Blue Suite" verges on the electro territories thanks to its rolling and twisted low-end, but thankfully we have the wonderfully gifted Willie Burns (LIES, The Trilogy Tapes) to restore the calmness and take you on a different sort of excursion.

Renamed
Taronja
The Song With A Name
Review: After a drop on Correspondant earlier in the year, Man power returns to Hivern Discs with another forthright selection of seductive, acid-inflected house music to get right under your skin. "Renamed" is loaded with mystery and romance, from the yearning piano lines to the haunting pad tones in the background, while the beat stays limber and detailed. "Taronja" takes a slightly different route but once again the intriguing mood remains, this time spelt out by a set of chiming tones that display some serious melodic prowess over a simmering slow house beat. "The Song With No Name" drifts out at the end of the record on a thoroughly downtempo tip, drifting in laconic vocal coos and light brushes of percussion.

Nee Shitteru (7:05)
Review: Earlier this year, Man Power briefly returned to his former home, Newcastle, to make some more music with his former Last Waltz colleagues. ESP Institute boss Lovefingers was impressed by the resultant tracks and here gives them a deserved release. A-side "Tistish" is a thrillingly wonky and intoxicating affair, with exotic synthesizer melodies, bustling Italo-disco style arpeggios and fuzzy, modular style electronics joining forces to create a mind-altering dancefloor mood (think Moscoman or Red Axes covering the original 1988 version of the KLF's "What Time Is Love" whilst high on acid). Arguably even better is sleazy flipside "Nee Shitteru", where ritualistic tribal drums and ragged analogue bass create a feverish and humid mood.

Review: Fresh from delivering the excellent El U Vee EP, Make a Dance welcome North-East titan Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power to M.A.D Records for the first time. This time round, Kirkwood has company: Kenyan singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rapasa Nyatrapasa. The pair set their stall out on opener 'Lou Land', where Nyatrapasa's Kenyan vocals and percussion slowly rise above a deep, drowsy and trippy deep house groove, before opting for an Amapiano-influenced Afro-tech-meets-Afro-House vibe on the more electronic 'Battle Hill'. Make a Dance deliver two takes on the latter on side B: a proto-house style vocal 'Remix' rich in vintage synth sounds, undulating acid bass, drum machine fills and echo-laden drum hits and a 'Dub Mix' that re-invents the track as a hazy, immersive slab of dub house/deep house fusion.
