Fyei (7:43)
Hantas (11:00)
Review: Cologne's Magazine label welcome Glasgow's Naum Gabo into the fold with Fyei, a fine two track exercise in slow burn bliss and conceptual record pressing trickery. The story goes that both these cuts which originate from Naum Gabo 12"s on Endless Flight and Kompakt's defunct Fright got played by Barnt and his Magazine cohorts with the tempo pulled down from 45rpm to 33rpm, transforming them into completely different productions. It's here that Magazine got the idea to re-release "Fyei" and "Hantas" at this new tempo but pressed to 45rpm resulting in a 12" that can only be played slower still!!! The long running project of Optimo man JG Wilkes and mastering engineer James Savage, Naum Gabo have been responsible for some brutal cuts over the years but this record proves they can be just as deadly when operating at a much slower speed. The sweeping synth vistas of "Fyei" sound particularly epic!!

It's On
It's On (Tevo Howard remix)
Review: Expanding a transatlantic connection forged with releases from UK artists The M.E.B. and Dead Rose Music Company, the fourth release for Let's Play House comes from Glasgowegian techno heroes Naum Gabo (Jonnie Wilkes of Optimo and James Savage) who inject a bit of motoric stomp to LPH's generally housey identity. The 12" starts off with "Ah & Oh," a creepy, frantic boogie that quickly hypnotizes with its loopy synth progressions and chopped-up vocal samples. The song eventually disintegrates into a thinned-out smattering of glitches and blips, making for a seamless transition into the more bass-heavy second track. "It's On" boldly conveys a sense of lunacy and impending (dance floor) doom, as though the club might collapse unless you keep stomping along to the distorted bass warbles. The flip also features a remix of "It's On" by Chicago's drum machine man, the legendary Tevo Howard, who trims the fat, making for a more streamlined yet muscular rendering of the original. An acid version of the mix will be offered as a digital exclusive.

Theme For Great Cities
Wet Job
Review: Optimo Music, the record releasing branch of the Optimo Espacio empire overseen by messrs Twitch and Wilkes has to date been punctuated by an emphasis on putting out music that truly reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of the duo's legendary DJ sets. Equally, the releases have tended to fly under the radar of general consumption, finding a home with the more discerning of ears. That won't necessarily change with this homage to Glasgow's musical heritage from Naum Gabo, Wilkes' collaborative project with James Savage, but it's likely anyone who attends a club over the coming months will hear their devilishly good reworking of Simple Minds "Theme For Great City". Wisely deciding not to mess with the template of what is considered a balearic classic, Naum Gabo's rework is a faithful one that adds some sonic drama to those distinctive synth stabs. Equally good is the B Side cover of the 1979 punk funker "Wet Job" from Fingerprintz that retains the jagged nature of the original but infuses the mood with a decidedly noirish sensibility. Look out for the forthcoming Factory Floor single "Real Love" on this label which features a truly mind melting Optimo remix.

Pictur (Joakim remix)
Pictur (The Loving Hand remix)
Pictur (Naum Gabo edits 1 & 2)
Review: After one half of the legendary Optimo Dj's broke out with his side line in Betty Botox edits last year, now it's the turn of Jonnie Wilkes to try something solo. Named after a Russian sculptor, the collaboration between Wilkes and James Savage from Oscuro P has already yielded one 12", and this second gets two stunning remixes from a couple of top-name producers.

Wonderboy producer Joakim, who got global props after his mix of Dj Mehdi's Pocket Piano unleashes a beast with his version, an epic acid disco track that ebbs and flows to perfection over ten glorious minutes. It's hard to imagine something this deep and well crafted will be slept on and it could well turn out to be a bit of a classic over the next few months - it's that good.

Former DFA and UNKLE helmsman Tim Goldsworthy did an initial mix of Pictur under his alias The Loving Hand. It was a 6 part, 24 minute long mix that thankfully has been edited down by Naum Gabo for the single into two Dj-friendly excerpts. Even in it's edited state it retains the original's sense of odyssey, as Goldsworthy takes the listener on a real journey over the two tracks. Remixes this accomplished and sophisticated don't come around every day, so it's well worth picking these up sharpish.

More Of That Frightful Oompty Boompty Music: A Spun Out Sampler: Part 2
Paranoid London - "Spinning Out" (7:03)
Fantastic Twins - "Kali's Tounge Was A Weapon" (6:35)
Manfredas - "Hfuhruhurr" (6:11)
Naum Gabo - "Cold Sold" (6:11)
Review: Inspired by the late, great Andrew Weatherall - whom they represented for many years - the Spun Out DJ agency has decided to release a swathe of compilation style EPs showcasing the work of some of their artists. Somewhat predictably, this second volume in the series is as inspired as its must-check predecessor. Paranoid London gets things going with a typically mind-mangling analogue acid jam ('Spinning Out'), before Fantastic Twins join the dots between acid and EBM on 'Kali's Tongue Was a Weapon'. Over on the flip, Manfredas offers up some wayward punk-funk/post-punk fun ('Hfuhruhurr') before Glasgow's Naum Gabo gets ready for the apocalypse via the angular electronics and hallucinatory intent of 'Cold Sold'.
