Review: For the first time VIBRAPHONE RECORDS is releasing a record by an artist other than THE TRUE UNDERGROUND SOUND OF ROME. For such an exclusive event there could have not been a better choice than Italian DJ/PRODUCER, Nick Anthony SIMONCINO. For the production of this record, ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO (Sunset Islands) Simoncino uses a selection of strictly old school analog synthesizers, and drum machines, which takes you on a charming magical journey through the Mediterranean Sea with pulsating minimal deep bass lines, oneiric harmonic textures, exotic tom tom patterns, hypnotic sexy and catchy grove beats. ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO is a record that connects and combines the essential elements and spirit of deep house music along with providing its visionary future...

Review: Operating a dedicated vinyl-only service down under, Thug have made a smart move here in reaching out to two modern house producers with an innate feeling for how to craft emotive deep house rooted in Chicago traditions. In this chunky double pack both producers are providing a backdrop to soulful crooner Mark Rogers, offering four alternative takes on each of their productions. Tevo's original "Brainstorm" is a cool and deadly acid workout that keeps the 303 bassline bubbling at a constant, while his remix goes into a more plaintive headspace full of lush piano notes. Simoncino gets intricate with the sequencing on "Happy", but still the mood remains as contemplative one, while "Love Is Strong" focuses on a more prominent bass line to get your body popping.

1985 (10")

Deep House
  1. 1985 (club mix)
  2. 1985 (dub mix)
Review: As collaborations go, this is an interesting one. It sees keys-totin' veteran Boyd Jarvis - a maker of slick US garage since the late 1980s - team up with drum machine revivalist Nick Anthony Simoncino for a spot of cross-generation pollination. The resulting track, offering in Club and Dub flavours, mixes all manner of live keys, organs, electric pianos and percussion with the sort of stark, stripped-back machine rhythms that marks out Simoncino's productions. It's an odd but alluring fusion; spacious and out-there while being dubby and floor-friendly, it sounds like a long lost outtake of a recording session from 1985. Which, we guess, is probably the idea.

  1. The Oliverwho Factory - "Mind Free"
  2. Nick Anthony Simoncino - "Tramonto Techno"
  3. Nicholas - "From Somewhere Else"
  4. Ennio Colaci - "Hinterland"
Review: The latest offering from the Bosconi camp as part of their Stallions series sees a solid record featuring The Oliverwho Factory, Nick Anthony Simoncino, Nicholas and label regular Ennio Colaci. First up The Oliverwho crew, who keep up their keenly paced tempos and driving beats and work a delicious amount of 303 in their "Mind Free" jam. Simoncino heads into softer climes, following Larry Heard's lead towards cascading melodies and harmonizing arpeggios except with a cheeky Italian force of will underneath it all. Nicholas is in a more restrained and grooving deep house mood with plenty of reverb and delay in the offing for a quintessential dub techno chord, and Ennio Colaci is equally strung out with the shimmering tones of his own "Hinterland".

Electro
  1. Animal (original mix)
  2. Animal (Legowelt remix)
  3. International Smoke Signals
  4. Pearl Harbor
Review: While he has been making his name on rough analogue house, here Nick Anthony Simoncino is instead concerned with a more electro outlook, getting broken in the beat department and letting the rest of the sonics take on a bewildering sci-fi leaning. Legowelt reduces the wilder elements down into one of his cosmic arrays, letting spooky melodies drift around a more measured beat. "International Smoke Signals" carries on the vibe laid out by the guest remixer, getting into a Larry Heard kind of euphoric jam that sits very comfortably next to the last track on the EP, "Pearl Harbour". It's just the kind of wacky and playful analogue house music that's needed in these times.

Review: Having previously appeared on Vibraphone with the Isole Del Tramonto 12" back in 2016, Nick Anthony Simoncino returns to the perennial Italian deep house label with a full album, his fourth following previous turns on Thug, Mathematic and Creme Organization. As you would expect, Mystic Adventures is a masterclass of classic drum machines and synthesisers, loaded with the passion and mystery that Simoncino has always managed to imbue his music with. The highlights are too many to list - if you're familiar with his other work, then Simoncino has everything you need on this LP. If you're not already wise, these nine new tracks are a wonderful introduction.

  4. Some People (Chamboche remix)
  5. Some People (Trevor Deep Jr Warehouse remix)
Review: In his continuing quest to keep the flame of Chicago house music burning bright, Nick Anthony Simoncino scores well in working with Robert Owens on this new EP for Traveller. The two straight up mixes of the title track are brooding, moody acid pieces that speak to the more romantic, mildly sinister end of the 80s box jam. Owens vocal sounds great in this dark context, and likewise on the "Aquatic Techno" mix his pained delivery sounds utterly poignant. Chamboche delivers a tracky remix that simmers the elements down into a heavy-lidded minimal house affair, while Trevor Deep Jr works "Some People" from a more mellow, reflective deep house angle.

  4. Nick Anthony Simoncino - "The Battle Of Pacific"
Review: New South Wales meets Perugia and NYC on the latest Thug Records release which pairs Nick Anthony Simoncino with Steve Summers on the suitably named Brothers From Other Mothers EP. Simoncino and Thug have developed a strong working relationship since the Italian released his debut album with the Australian label last year, racking up split releases with Tevo Howard and '90s revivalist Mark Rogan as well as getting remixed in a Sex Tags Mania style on the DJ Sotofett Presents Diggi-Dubbi-Tripp-Mixes Featuring Tapes (In Session) EP. Pairing up with LIES mainstay Steve Summers makes perfect sense as both artists have established reputations for freeform, loose, straight to tape takes on the Chicago House format and the four cuts here don'tdeviate from their respective winning formulas. The crystalline chiming of Simoncino's final track "The Battle Of Pacific" is a notable highlight.
