Review: Nick Hakim's rise to prominence has been something of a slow-burner, which seems appropriate given the nature of his music, and this collection of his two EPs provides documentary evidence of a rare talent. Sleekly downtempo, sultry and eminently laidback, these two EPs showcase an artist with both a mellifluous croon and an artful gift for late-night atmospherics, not to mention magnetic songwriting aplenty. Likely to appeal to fans of Frank Ocean and Blood Orange as much as devotees of classic platters by the like of D'Angelo and Sade, the nocturnal soul of Hakim seems set to seduce a whole load more souls in the imminent future.

Review: It's been two years since Nick Hakim set out his soulful, sultry and Balearic stall via the Where Will We Go Parts 1 & 2 LP. Since that gathered together tracks from previously released EP, Green Twins is officially his debut album. It's rather good, too, effortlessly joining the dots between hazy, Harry Nillson style dream pop, horizontal psychedelia, intergalactic soul and horizontal grooves. Hakim apparently used a more experimental approach to writing and recording, which manifests itself through effects-laden drum tracks, a use of lo-fi electronics, and vocals drenched in reverb and tape delay. The results are, for the most part, hugely impressive.

  2. Onyx Collective - "The Pawn Broker" (3:02)
  3. Onyx Collective - "Rat Race" (2:13)
Review: ATO Records' RSD 2018 offering is a collaborative affair featuring previously unheard songs from psychedelic soul artist Nick Hakim and Onyx Collective, an outfit that has a rising reputation on NYC blossoming modern jazz scene. Hakim's "Vincent Tyler", in particular, is superb; a loose, languid, string-laden soul torch song that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. In contrast, the two Onyx Collective offerings are fuzzy chunks of slightly psychedelic post-rock madness with occasional wild post-punk sax solos. While nowhere near as emotive as the A-side, they're certainly very satisfying.
