Review: Four years ago, Timmy Regisford and Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell delivered a hush-hush 12" single featuring their versions of Nina Simone classic 'Blackbird'. It has become something of a sought-after single, hence this limited-edition reissue. Regisford kicks things off with a fine rework that places Simone's iconic vocals atop a bouncy Afro-house beat and warming deep house instrumentation, before Claussell lays down two 'Edits and Overdubs' versions: a jacking but musically expansive main mix - all drum machine fills, organ solos and sonic spirituality - and a 'Bonus Beats Organ Dub' that sees him lace killer keys atop an infectious house groove. 'Rebel Nina', a spoken word spirit lifted from a vintage Simone interview, completes an essential EP.

You have to come correct when you dare step to Nina Simone, but you know full well the cast of characters assembled on this 12" can be trusted with the high priestess of soul. Timmy Regisford is up first, bringing some intense organ lines and Lately bass into the mix with a perfect balance between jubilant expression and tension. Joe Claussell then steps up with two different edit and overdub versions, where the organs get poured on more liberally and the whole jam boils over. As a wonderful bonus element, you get a powerful acapella monologue from Nina Simone to close out the B side.

Review: South Street's latest missive gathers together a trio of club-friendly remixes of Nina Simone classics that first appeared on the 2006 compilation "Remixed & Reimagined". Francois K impresses with an A-side revision of Simone's celebrated cover of Beatles classic "Here Comes The Sun" that sounds like a long lost Larry Heard record from his classic Fingers Inc. period. Those after something a little more rolling and funk-fuelled should wrap their ears around Tony Humphries' Dub of "Turn Me On", which boasts a seductive mixture of Romanthony style hard loops and rumbling, UK garage influenced bass. Completing the package is Coldcut's fine re-imagining of "Save Me", which places Simone's heart-arching vocal atop skittish, club-ready drums and looped guitars.
