Attack The Dancefloor Volume Ten
Cat: ZEDD 12245. Rel: 05 Apr 17

Disco/Re-Edits
Crackazat - "What You're Feeling" (7:23)
Joey Negro - "Must Be The Music" (JN Disco Boogie dub Extravaganza) (6:04)
Joey Negro - "Stomp Your Feet" (Hot Toddy remix) (8:27)
Opolopo - "Put Your Cap On" (5:43)
Review: Z Records DJ-focused Attack The Dancefloor series reaches its tenth installment via an EP packed full of previously unheard secret weapons. There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the piano-driven goodtime house grooves of Crackazat's floor-filling "What You're Feeling", to the boogie and jazz-funk inspired space-house of Opolopo's brilliant "Put Your Cap On". Sandwiched in between you'll find two Joey Negro disco workouts: his own extended 'Boogie Dub Extravaganza' version of the Sunburst Band style "Must Be The Music", and a nu-disco-meets-Italo-disco reinvention of "Stomp Your Feet" from Crazy P's Chris Todd under the now familiar Hot Toddy alias.

Dave & Omar - "Starlight" (Grant Nelson extended mix) (6:16)
Chocolate Fudge Band - "Everything" (DJ Fudge extended mix) (6:57)
Dave & Maurissa - "Look At The Stars" (Dave's Starshine club mix) (7:48)
Opolopo - "Looking For You" (Peter's extended Organ) (6:02)
Review: Soul meets speed garage on this new V/A EP from Z Records, blurring the lines between the genres in just the way we like it. The opening track - Grant Nelson's mix of 'Starlight' by Dave & Omar - is a euphoric, piano-laced uplifter which both sonically and lyrically urges us to reach for the sky. That's followed by the DJ Fudge production 'Everything' by Chocolate Fudge Band, featuring lots of live instrumentation and a Curtis Mayfield style vocal, while over on the flip, 'Looking For You' proves to be a deep and bouncy cut filled with soulful Motown vocal chops and an organ workout worthy of any Sunday service, over a beautifully wonky house framework.

Disco/Re-Edits
Mark Knight, Sgt Slick, Beverly Knight - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (5:45)
Opolopo, Jaki Graham - "Fire" (6:07)
Review: Fool's Paradise is the exciting new label from Toolroom Records' Mark Knight. Coming straight from the heart, it's a natural progression from his hugely acclaimed 2021 album release, 'Untold Business', which saw Mark go back to his roots, paying homage to the more funky, soulful, and vocal house from the 1990s from where he came. With a focus on real instrumentation and production, coupled with great songwriting, this new Toolroom sublabel will be a platform for high quality house music designed to stand the test of time. Launching the new label with a mighty bang and delivering the first in our exciting new vinyl sampler series is head honcho Mark Knight, who joins forces with his Australian Toolroom labelmate, Sgt Slick, and British Soul sensation, Beverley Knight, on a dynamite cover of Prince's 1979 classic, 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. Respectfully transporting the song onto today's dancefloors, Mark & Sgt Slick deliver a classy uplifting soulful house production, loaded with funky guitars, warm pads and sublime key performances. Adding the icing on the cake and putting her own stamp on things, Beverley belts out one of her signature spine-tingling vocals, garnished with lush harmonies and BV's that would indeed make The Purple One proud. Completing the vinyl package is dance music stalwart, Opolopo, and British soul icon, Jaki Graham, whom together bring the dancefloor heat with their new single, 'Fire'. Powered by a potent soulful house groove from Opolopo, loaded with warm piano hooks, emotive synth melodies and a sublime popping bass hook, 'Fire' see's Jaki flaunt her electrifying vocal talents with a show-stopping performance on this irresistibly catchy song.

Joey Negro Presents 30 Years Of Z Records EP 3
Cat: ZEDD 12292. Rel: 15 Sep 20

Disco/Re-Edits
Joey Negro - "Love Hangover" (Joey Negro club mix) (6:58)
Opolopo - "Get On Up" (5:38)
TW Funkmasters - "Love Money" (Joey Negro dubwise Revision) (7:33)
Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Far Beyond" (6:37)
Review: Following on from the bumper compilation on Z Records of all the label's greatest hist, boss man Joey Negro offers up a third volume of 12"s. He goes first with a nice loose mix of 'Love Hangover' that bumps in all the right places. Opolopo's 'Get On Up' is a dazzling cut with cosmic chords and long legged drums that move you to your core, then Joey is back with a slick dubwise version of the classic TW Funkmasters cut 'Love Money.' Last of all, 'Far Beyond' is a reflective closer with far-sighted chords and a late night glow.

Cat: X 001. Rel: 20 Dec 22

Funk/Reissues
X Machine (extended mix) (6:42)
X Machine (instrumental mix) (6:41)
Review: Opolopo is a machine when it comes to serving up superb disco, funk and soul sounds. He's done so for two decades on plenty of top labels from Toolroom to Version Galore to Gamm. This time out he finds himself on a self-released tip with X Machine which is a mash-up of James Brown. The original vocals cut through funky basslines and lots of big percussions as the loose drums rumbled on next to warming organ chords. The instrumental is a more direct to dancefloor jam.

Chicago (7:16)
Spinnin (7:41)
Review: The second release from the newly emerging If It Ain't Jazz label comes from Swedish producer Opolopo. For this one he takes two classics from the jazz-disco world and adds his own distinctive spins. The results soar into the stratosphere on golden chords and humid pads, funky drums and gliding grooves. Both are timeless reworks that will do plenty of damage on a wide range of dance floors. This marks another noteworthy release for this small but well formed label.

Sickla Side Push Shuffle (6:53)
Aqua Lung (5:25)
Groovitational Waves (5:21)
Review: Opolopo has been serving up floor filing blends of disco, funk and soul for two decades on plenty of well regarded labels. Toolroom now invites him to serve up three brand new jams that show off his pedigree. "Sickla Side Push Shuffle" is a funk-licked, string-laced soul searcher with plenty of poolside appeal and "Aqua Lung" is a big disco roller from the Philly school. Mellifluous closer "Groovitational Waves" has some slick keys, tight bass licks and loose and authentic drums that make it feel like an OG wedge of disco gold.

Go Get It (Opolopo Tweak) (5:46)
American Promise (Opolopo Rebounce) (7:02)
Review: Having previously proved his production credentials via a series of fine 12" singles fusing synth-heavy boogie sounds and tactile house grooves, Z Records regular Opolopo has decided to throw himself headfirst into the disco re-edit scene. For the first release on Version Galore, the Stockholm-based producer serves up two killer interpretations destined for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find "Go Get It", a brilliantly bumping and groovy re-arrangement of a punchy, horn-heavy disco funk jam that makes much of the original's winding synth solos and jazzy backing vocals. Arguably even better is heavy disco B-side "American Promise", where crunchy, Hendrix style guitar riffs and urgent female vocals ride a guttural disco-funk groove.

Review: Five years on from his last studio full-length excursion on Tokyo Dawn - the future jazz epic Voltage Controlled Feelings - Opolopo pops up on Z Records with the similarly impressive Superconductor. This time round, the Swedish producer is mining his boogie and electrofunk influences, combining them with deep and soulful house rhythms to produce a swathe of killer cuts. He's joined by an impressive cast list of guest singers - Taka Boom, Colonel Red, Pete Simpson and Diane Charlamagne among them - who invariably add super-slick vocals to his colourful, synth-heavy jams. It's a formula that guarantees a string of potential underground dancefloor hits, from the soft-touch boogie revivalism of "Feels Good 2 Me", to the bass-heavy, garage-influenced bounce of "Just Feel The Music".

Review: Swedish producer Opolopo has been immersed in soulful music since early childhood. Having a keyboard playing father with a respectable collection of jazz, soul and fusion records, laid out the obvious musical path. Artists like Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber, Earth Wind & Fire, Bob James, George Duke, Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan and Gino Vannelli started him off and are still major influences. The "Madness EP" is a top Swedish Brandy release.

Life's A Dance (After Hours Glide mix(production by Kyoto Jazz Massive))
Life's A Dance (After Hours Glide instrumental (production by Kyoto Jazz Massive))
Review: Uniting galaxies, producer extraordinaire/keyboardist Opolopo joins forces with unearthly Canadian vocalist Amalia (Sekoya/1 Luv) for the release of 'Life's A Dance'. Groundbreaking soul and body shaking grooves zap you forward and back to the days when Chaka, Herbie and Bootsy ruled the cosmic airwaves, but it doesn't stop there. With an obsession for the future, the pair only push to do things a little differently. The Original 9-5 mix features massively syndicated beats, ear piercing rubber bass and alien synth stabs. The After Hours Glide mix re-introduces you to heavy slap bass and boogie funk! Both mixes are blessed with a killa chorus that'll have your butt moving whether you like it or not. Already championed by the likes of Rainer Truby and Orin Walters (Afronaught/Bugz in the Attic.)

Axxanxxan (6:41)
Axxiove (6:36)
Review: Opolopo and Alafia have hooked up here to work together on a new musical journey that takes the form of these two richly layered percussive monsters. 'Axxanxxan' and 'Axxiove' which arrive on this 12" from Canopy are as addictive as it gets - they fuse Afro rhythms and disco dazzle with synth innovation to create a pair of dance bombs with real tribal energy. The A-side is detailed with metallic bass, choppy guitars and swirling synths that add up to a nice tropical sotmg, while the flip has more prominent drums and hypnotic rhythms that have a subtle cosmos twist. Two gems from Canopy, then.

Ernie Watts & Gilberto Gil - "Gondwana" (OPOLOPO Tweak) (6:17)
Kevin Moore - "Speak Your Mind" (OPOLOPO Tweak) (4:57)
Review: Gilberto Gil and Ernie Watt's classic jazz dancer 'Gondwana' gets a big remake here for the main man OPOLOPO. He offers a tweak that brings broken beat funk, with his jazz-fusion keys dancing over the shuffling drums and bass and mad pianos brings the vibes. The vocals are the icing on the cake for this class South American party starter. On the flip he turns his sights to Kevin Moore's 'Speak Your Mind' which is a summery and soulful disco heater with a squelchy boogie bassline that takes off and ensures the dance floor will do the same.

Review: Gamm is one of those labels you can always rely on to come through with some dance floor magic. This time out they get Opolopo in to serve up some of his top tweaks. First up he tackle's George Duke's 'Cravo E Canela' and does so with a sunny disposition, plenty of cosmic synth work and dancing drums that are run through with an uplifting spirit. On the flip side of this lush 12" is a tweak of Flora Purim's 'Love Lock,' another majestic jazz-funk groove with conversational leads and a golden sound backed by lush vocals and nice disco-stepping beats.

Review: The good folks at Gamm pop up with another of their irresistible slices of feel good funk. This one takes what some people would say is one of the most significant rare groove tracks ever in Headhunter's 'God Make Me Funky' and get Opolopo to tweak it with his usual sense of elan. The results are deadly, full of funky bass and sample course you will well recognise. On the B-side Opolopo draws out the grooves and goes for a soulful house roller that reworks Sylvia St. James's downtempo groover 'Motherland' to perfection.

Review: Opolopo is the alias of Hungarian born, Stockholm-based producer Peter Major. He's no stranger to G.A.M.M. having garnered several releases on it in recent years, and this might be one of his most exciting yet. Here he lends his Midas touch to two classics by legend Herbie Hancock; on the first side he turns 'Butterfly' into a lo-slung late night groove that makes for proper mood music, while over on the flip there's a right dancefloor heater in the form of a seriously funked-up tweak of 'Hang Up Your Hang Ups'.

Pharoah Sanders - "You've Got To Have Freedom" (Opolopo Tweak) (7:12)
Roy Ayers - "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:05)
Review: The latest missive on GAMM is something of a biggie. It features two superb reworks of classic cuts by Pharoah Sanders and Roy Ayers courtesy of Opolopo, a house producer whose cuts always have plenty of synth-fired funk and lashings of soul. He brilliantly transforms Sanders' "You've Got To Have Freedom" into a rubbery, Latin-tinged house number, underpinning the original jazz cut - complete with righteous vocals and killer trumpet solos - with an ace new bassline and beefed-up beats. He takes a different approach on his revision of Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", re-casting it as a rolling and chunky house number full of suspenseful string parts, twinkling pianos and Ayers' titular vocal.

Wipe The Needle - "Skyscrapers" (9:10)
Backroom Productions - "Classic Vibe" (Dave Lee remix) (6:19)
Raquel Rodriguez - "Undone" (Dave Lee's Disco Blend) (6:29)
Review: Time to Attack the Dancefloor once more as we supply some heavy Disco & House weaponry. Featuring the brand new remix of Opolopo's storming 'Stroke my Disco' by dutch funkateers Fouk who double down on the Piano and Clav workouts for the peak time. Exclusive new material from Wipe The Needle who's 'Skyscrapers' track is a modern Jazz-Funk masterpiece, heavy on the flute and soulful bass. On the flip Dave Lee takes it back to '97 with his rework of Backroom Productions 'Classic Vibe' which sees him flex his house-ier muscles, re-arranging the classic elements and adding extra keys to this much loved underground tune. Finishing off the EP is Dave's remix of nu-soul diva Raquel Rodriguez, where he crafts Raquel's dynamic vocal delivery over chunky Disco drumming & soulful synths before letting loose into Roy Ayers-esque vibes finale!

Yellowjackets - "Matinee Idol" (Opolopo Tweak) (5:13)
Eddie Harris - "La Carnival" (Opolopo Tweak) (9:05)
Review: Fresh from delivering two killer tweaks of rare groove classics from Headhunters and Sylvia St James, Opolopo returns to GAMM with two more magical reworks. He opens proceedings with a terrific revision of Yellowjackets' jazz-funk classic 'Matinee Idol', wisely giving plenty of airtime to the original's killer groove, punchy horns and mazy piano solos while also adding a few elements of his own (including delay-laden vocal snippets from a variety of other classic cuts). It's a terrific - and impressively tasteful - rub of a genuine stone cold classic. Arguably even more impactful is the Stockholm-based producer's flipside revision of Eddie Harris' 'La Carnival', which he turns into a sweaty, percussive, celebratory and solo-laden house-not-house epic. In a word: brilliant.

Jean-Luc Ponty - "In The Fast Lane"
Opolopo - "In The Fast Lane"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight split to the top of the outer sleeve, but otherwise in excellent condition***

French jazz-funk experimentalist Jean-Luc Ponty was already a quarter of a century into his career when he recorded 'In The Fast Lane', a genuinely brilliant synth-heavy workout that added trademark violin refrains to a staccato drum machine rhythm and bold, bubbly waves of synthesizer. The record became something of an anthem in the techno clubs of Detroit on its 1989 release, while also inspiring jazz-dancers at Gilles Peterson's legendary Dingwalls sessions. Here the track gets a deserved re-release as a 12" single, with extensive sleeve notes courtesy of the man himself. This time round, there's also an inspired cover version from Opolopo, who re-creates Ponty's famous synthesizer riffs, jams out colourful new solos and adds them all to a non-stop house beat that's as infectious as they come. Simply superb.

Review: Reel People Music does a fine line in old school house, disco, funk and soul. It's reissued remixes of Robin S classics, put out albums by the label heads Reel People and now offers up a tasty vinyl sampler. Reel People themselves kick-off as remixed by Art of Tones and with the lush neo-soul vocals of Angie Stone on the mid-tempo disco-house-funk roller 'Don't Stop The Music.' Opolopo brings another soul-drenched deep disco sound with a great Angela Johnson vocal and Stro Elliot's Roller Rink rework is a nice lazy beat for cosy backroom dances. Dave Pezzner - "Waking Up Then Going Back To Sleep" (Shane Linehan Balance mix)
Opolop - "Arsia Mons Zinc Mines"
Review: Fine purveyors of deepest house Finale have scooped up another handful of choice producers to flaunt their talents. Miles Sagnia commences the fun and games with the seductive tones of "Alleys Of My Mind", expertly working a vocal turn alongside plenty of gently bubbling acid vibe and cool-tempered pads. Carlos Nilmmns is much dubbier in his outlook, and no worse off for it. It's Pezzner that's bring a little grit to the mellow proceedings as he turns to a punchy bassline and prominent drums that should get the attention of many a wiggling ass on the dancefloor. Opolopo rounds things off with a strange and psychedelic cut that drizzles even measures of acid, dub techno and deep house onto the tracks and lets the joyous mess roll out of its own accord.
