Review: South London's Oscar Jerome is a real keystone of the capitals's ongoing jazz renaissance. His highly-anticipated debut album Breathe Deep comes on Caroline International and shows just why he has become such a revered voice in the last jazz movement having already worked with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd and Yussef Dayes. He calls on a wealth of collaborators here, too, including Joe Armon-Jones and Sons of Kemet, and they all add extra chops to a record that, says the artist, "is a pretty broad presentation of who I am musically and my journey to get to this point."

Review: Oscar Jerome received plenty of plaudits for his 2020 debut album 'Breathe Deep', a pleasingly accessible and subtly pop-tinged exploration of London's contemporary 'neo-jazz' sound and the influences he shares with many of his peers (in particular Afrobeat). 'The Spoon', his latest full-length, begins with a sliver of hazy ambient jazz and ends with a chunk of sun-soaked, laidback, Afro-influenced nu-jazz. In between, you'll find a wealth of largely relaxed, atmospheric and warming workouts that variously join the dots between modern jazz, R&B, soul, low-slung jazz-funk, hip-hop and the kind of detailed, effortlessly gorgeous soundscapes that defy easy categorization.

Franc Moody - "Cristo Redentor" (5:20)
Review: Oscar Jerome, Oscar Worldpeace and Franc Moody have got new music coming on the latest Blue Note Re:imagined compilation this year which is already getting us hella excited. Before we hear what is sure to be a contemporary great, we get treated to a couple of singles from it on this tidy 45 rpm. Jerome Oscar & Oscar Worldpeace go first with '(Why You So) Green With Envy' which fuses jazz styles for across the age with Worldpeace's tight and thoughtful bars. On the flip side is Franc Moody with 'Cristo Redentor' which balances jazz's traditional past with its freshest future.
