Odyss Dance

Deep House
  1. Odyss Dance (6:43)
  2. People Music (6:52)
  3. People Music (bonus beats) (3:40)
Review: US deep house master Patrice Scott steps out of his own Sistrum Recordings label and lands on the Detroit-laden People Of Earth for a sublime three-track excursion. "Odyss Dance" is a classic Scott joint, a deep and ethereal house experiment that instantly gives off the producer's signature feel of mystique, best described as a 'dubby haze'. "People Music" is a little brighter, a little warmer around the edges, thanks to an uplifting synth riding solo in the upper edges of the mix, and a funky bassline driving the engine beneath. There's also a 'bonus beats' version as a final slice of magic, where Scott adds a layer of tribalistic percussion to an already ritualistic drum pattern. Another Patrice Scott blinder.

Deep House
  1. Movin In (6:48)
  2. Come Inside (6:07)
  3. Are You Conscious? (4:07)
Review: Patrice Scott's third and final solo EP of 2018 is packed to the rafters with high-grade material. Perhaps most notable is A-side "Movin In", a fluid, funk-fuelled affair bristling with jazzy electric piano motifs, swinging, New Jersey garage influenced drums, liquid synth bass and some decidedly Larry Heard style musical flourishes. Over on side B, the long-serving Detroiter layers sumptuous jazz-funk synths and jazzy analogue bass over a sweaty deep house beat on "Come Inside", before showcasing his hip-hop style beat-making skills on the beautiful, deep-as-an-ocean head-nodder "Are You Conscious?". In a word: superb.

  3. Hanna - "Heist" (6:37)
  4. Reekee - "Let It Make" (6:38)
Review: Alex Attias' Visions Inc imprint has decided to launch a new multi-artist EP series. Happily, the first "Phase" in the "Evolution" series - they've promised three more this year - delivers a suitably strong start. Patrice Scott sets a high benchmark with opener "Rain Dance", a wonderfully warm fusion of elastic deep house beats, spacey electronic motifs and tactile Rhodes chords, before Kai Alce breaks up the beats a little on his effortlessly soulful, jazz-funk influenced revision of "Stay My Way" by Kemetic Just presents Justone. Hanna's flipside opener "Heist" is suitably deep, starry, groovy and soulful, while Reekee's "Let It Make" is a musically rich affair full of jazz-funk bass, fizzing synths, far-sighted chords and bustling beats that sit somewhere between broken beat and breakbeat house.
