BNJMN - "Shallows"

Perseus Traxx - "Quiet Resignation"
Tr One - "Soaring"
Review: Photic Fields is an imprint with a clear and pronounced predilection for electro informed productions that dart out into murkier leftfield corners of contemporary electronic music, and with just four previous releases since 2012 they're an outfit clearly focused on quality over quantity. Be that as it may this 12" finds no less than six tracks jammed onto it, but there's no arguing with the calibre of artists. BNJMN's melancholic beatdown, Aroy Dee's gently lifting synth-pop funk, Lerosa's acidic drama, Metropolis' tense house noir, Perseus Traxx's adventurous box jam and TR One's balletic composition, all feeding into a release oozing hardware class and vintage sophistication.

Review: Balkan Recordings return with a third edition of their Mutant City Acid series. On the A side Cardopusher gives us some vintage Chicago acid reminiscent of DJ Bam Bam on the ferocious "Facelifter" while Perseus Traxx gives us the spooky "Amphitheatre of Joppa" which builds the suspense a lot like another certain classic by Suburban Knight; you know the one! On the B side we've got "Turn My Tape Up" by Posthuman. Not just another apt slogan for the new generation but a wicked track to boot! With its driving arpeggio that later morphs into 303 style acid and rusty drums; this one's got all you need! Finally UK techno legend Paul Mac appears too! "Borrow The Sound" sees him taking time out from engineering for the likes of Ben Sims to throw down a sturdy example of dark side electro that'd make Silicon Scally and Scape One stand up and notice.

Review: Artwork of the week goes to this Solar One 12", with the label enlisting Lowlands don Mehdi Rouchiche to work his Godspill magic on the collective talents of Helena Hauff, Perseus Traxx, The Exaltics, Drvg Cvltre and Ekman. Perseus Traxx's moustache is quite something! These artists join forces for the Signs Of Decay 12", a powerful collective statement on the desiccation some "hard and dirty acid tracks" can do to a dancefloor. Don't come here looking for any lofty concepts, this is just five of the best banging their boxes in the name of all that is grotty and lysergic. Fans of Hauff's Panzerkreuz material will be delighted with the demonic, red lining sounds of her contribution "Culmination Of Frustration."

Perseus Traxx - "Hi-Tech" (5:47)
Review: Weapons Of Desire kick off what is presumably a new series of various artist releases under the Machine Funk banger, and do so with a right royal collection of dance music punks. Drvg Cvltvre, for example, is a Dutchman who makes dirt, sleaze and noise an art form in his techno tracks, and the brilliantly brainless 'I Hate Thinking' is proof of that. UK hardware lover Perseus Traxx also brings plenty of lo-fi brilliance to his 'Hi-Tech', while Rennie Foster's 'Deposition Acid' achieves some hypnotic brilliance with the 303. Add in more rough and ready excellence from Type-303 and Bad Outfit and you have a hefty EP.

Circumstantial
The Map Is Not The Territory
Review: Following sterling entries from Derek Carr, John Shima and Mihail P, Distant Worlds reaches out to Perseus Traxx for a demonstration of the emotional heft and utopian optimism that classic techno promises in its most compelling moments. This is relatable, familiar territory, but executed with finesse beyond the reach of the average producer. "A New Mystery" is bathed in swirling synth tones as elegant as they are moving, while "Simulacra" places a bold square wave riff front and centre for an impactful deep techno meditation. "Circumstantial" reframes the same rich melodic approach in a frantic chassis of snapping beats darting around the grid with playful glee, and then "The Map Is Not The Territory" applies the same logic to a mystical but rhythmically charged trip into the netherworld of machine soul.

When I Think Of You (5:10)
Review: Prolific analogue explorer Perseus Traxx is on top form on this fifth and final 12" of 2017. It marks his first appearance on Holland's Pareidolia Recordings and contains a quartet of cuts that brilliantly blur the boundaries between electro, techno and early Chicago house. We've particularly been enjoying the foreboding, minor key melodies, ragged machine percussion, fizzing acid flashes and mud-caked lo-fi production of opener "Atlantis", though mazy acid-electro jam "Electric Duo" and meandering jack-track "When I Think Of You" - all Adonis beats, tumbling synthesizer melodies and acid bass - are equally as impressive. If you get time, check "Offerings To Herne", too - while the melodies are poignant and alluring, the track's other elements are tough and foreboding.

In Our Dreams
Review: The latest Love Notes welcomes Perseus Traxx to the fold with just the kind of romantic, classically informed hardware jam action that the label so dearly loves. "Fears Of Simplicity" kicks off on a celestial tip that reaches skyward with its plush layers of electronic melodics, while "Exhilaration Of The New" sports a distinctly Mr. Fingers-flavoured vibe that's impossible to dislike. "Half Heard Whispers" is a lighter jam that floats along on an airy bed of pads, and then "In Our Dreams" takes the prize as the prime cut on the record, digging deep to depict a more mysterious version of the old-skool house music we know and love.

Review: 18 months after Perseus Traxx brought Flight Recorder his first E.P, dedicated to four of the nine Muses of ancient Greece, the label now ushers in the second instalment dedicated to four more Muses, on Goddesses Of Inspiration II. The feel is the same as before with jagged cutting tones jammed live then edited down. Heavy synths and scattered drums perform an ode characterising the appropriate Muses, as tangled wires and a pair of hands wrench the overload of inspiration they give from basic machines. Once again Perseus' release on Flight Recorder is a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

Electrical Surge
Review: We are pleased to announce the release of 'Dr Burisch' by Perseus Trax on Crimes of the Future. After releases on Bunker, MOS & Chiwax (to name a few), the EP is a four track soundtrack to some forgotten alien abduction documentary... maybe.
Starting off with 'Rainy Tuesday' and its skipping pitch shift melodies, and followed by 'Lotus Protocol' and its almost Richard D. hook. On the flip we have the title track, slow and building, very much the 'theme' of the piece. The EP finishes with 'Electrical Surge', and its static crackle of radio interference and damaged power lines.

The Way You Make Me Feel
Review: Like Simoncino before him, Nigel "Perseus Traxx" Rogers has built his career around eking the maximum amount of melody and soul from decidedly dusty hardware. Here, he presents an expansive mini-album for US label Klapmaster Records (a kind of follow up to his untitled 2013 set on Bunker Records). If you enjoyed his previous output, you'll love Ethereal Journey; it's a vintage deep house lover's wet dream. There are distinct nods to the Burrell Brothers, Larry Heard and Bobby Konders throughout, with the luscious "Coming To Me" and thrillingly loose title track standing out. To be honest, it's all of a notably high quality, making Ethereal Journey a recommended purchase.

Review: Cyber Dance Records are back on the attack with a fresh release from the legendary Perseus Traxx aka Nigel Rogers, a 4-track EP entitled after recent scientific developments 'An Apparent Horizon'. It's a firmly machine-based and totally jam-packed affair reflecting diverse sounds from the UK's own rich history of electronic dance music, with elements from the classic Warp "deep space sound" prominent as much as the more usual 303-jacking acid house grooves in the vein of Baby Ford or Bam Bam. 'Lost Dreams' opens the record with a floaty dream-like hypnosis from the depths of space and sets the tone in magnificent style, followed up on Side A with the irresistible roll of 'Reverse The Trend' that takes the groove harder, further and deeperstraight off to the beyond. Dark strings reminiscent of old LFO, B-12 or Autechre vinyls from the early 90s propel us into Side B on 'Darkness Stalks', and then we're transported onto the concluding track on the EP, 'Distances'; an epic closer that opens with beautiful reverbed claps and acid squelches before diving into an inky black void of timeless space-travelling and slow-building tension that could surely echo hauntingly around any M25 rave in the depths of a late 1980s night.

Circuit Control
Review: Solar One has released some of the freshest electro to come out in recent times with proper respect going to Dynarec's Exomove EP, Das Muster's Durchleutung LP and last year's Black Pukee album by Mathematics Recordings graduate Andreas Gehm. Acid club tracks from British producer Perseus Traxx is what the German label has turned to next, with Nigel Rogers' debut coming as a one-sided, marbled, emerald-green vinyl. "Fresh Start" flutters with a wetness you'd expect to hear from someone like Luke Eargoogle, but in fact it's deep-seated, Chicago inspired house that's techy in parts but ultimately smooth and sensual. "Circuit Control" on the other hand is proper 'wow-wow' acid techno, and not that Perseus Traxx needs it, but there's every chance it comes with a Bunker Records seal of approval, only Solar One poached them first!

Review: It seems appropriate since surfacing on The Hague's Bunker Records in 2010, Perseus Traxx should return to the seminal Dutch label to release his debut album. It's all of the drum machines, acid stylings and time-worn basslines you could expect from Perseus Traxx, only given a modern edge - but not enough to loose its nostalgic charm. Bunker 3099 ventures into straight up drum tracks, like "Track 7", tinged with only the slightest of effects, while other productions like "Track 1" sees the most basic of monophonic basslines, thrum alongside whacking rim shots and luminous synths that light up an arrangement filled with retro-vocative musicality. An album that clearly draws its inspiration from the past, only avoiding the wonted cliches so many other retrospectives pieces can't.

Finding You

Anticipating Your Touch
Communications Blackout
Review: Perseus Traxx's recent Delsin outing Tales From The Night Sky saw the producer adopt a significantly tougher approach, but this debut for the Chiwax label sees him return to more sedate Chicago house territory. "Finding You" features strings and bass reminiscent of early Mr Fingers jams, with a simmering acid backbone keeping everything grounded, while "She Blows My Mind" combines a low slung bassline and rattling rimshots with swirling keys phasing in and out of view. On the flip, "Anticipating Your Touch" is another similarly dreamy journey into house music's past, with a loose arrangement and almost imperceptibly infectious groove that slowly builds itself to something that could be a long lost Virgo Four cut, while "Communications Blackout" provides some abstract mid-tempo jack with spring loaded bass and feather-light organ chords.

Review: Tales from the Night Sky (Part 1) sees Perseus Traxx continue to mine the acid house past of Chicago across four tracks. Unlike some of his less imaginative contemporaries however, this producer's productions gargle with a frenzied density that shows his own distinctive take on the period. Lead track "Gorgon" has an acid line to rival Laurent X's "Machines", but its main focus is the interplay between the distorted drums and the trance inducing melodies. Complementing this, "Poseidon's Monster" opts for a primitive jacking approach but the unexpected highlight is "Stranger Shores". Here Rogers explores a slower tempo and fashions delicate melodies that are in stark contrast to what precedes it.

Review: Having impressed all that dress well with his remix of Ali Renault a while back, Perseus Traxx steps out for a debut release proper on the Boe imprint that is nothing less than illuminating! Arriving on thick set vinyl sporting hand stamped artwork; Misspent Emotions presents five raw throwdowns drenched deep in the sounds of pure Chicago machine funk. Despite the multiplicity of records these days offering just this, there's an undeniable quality to all aspects here which lifts the EP far above your average Chi-Town clone. The title track will hit the spot as soon as those haunting pads arise over the rough drum machine manipulations, but crucially the four other tracks provide just as much substance for the mind, body and soul. With releases in the pipeline for Dutch label M>O>S and Abstract Forms, Perseus Traxx is clearly a talent to watch. Big applause to all involved on this beast of a twelve inch.

Review: Perseus Traxx aka Nigel Stephen Rogers is steadily gaining a reputation as one of the few producers who successfully creates a sound that noda to the old skool yet remains somehow fresh and contemporary. Dutch label Bunker have snapped him up for his second release, honing in on his inherent soul and breadth of style - from classic 303 manipulations to a deeper, more atmospheric composition. "Bunker 3093" is a five track offering which exploits complex beats and an array of cleverly combined elements; electro synths, fluttering drum patterns and manipulated chords weave throughout this release in a showcase of variance. "Andromeda" with its distinct rave feel of whirring synths and heavy drums leads to "U", which opens and closes with a soothing tidal wave sample, washing up into crisp crackles and a relentless chord sequence that makes it Juno's pick of the bunch. "Destination Drexciya" contrasts delightfully, dominated by cosmic bleeps and siren-esque samples. On the reverse "Sticky Fingers'" heavy kick and rapid hi-hats lie against a hollow melody and a twanging synth. Lastly, "Buck Rogers" oozes metallic percussion and again, a deliriously dance worthy synth line.

Haze N Adaze - "Hurt You"
Kammerton - "Get Down"
Review: Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan's "the medium is the message" theorem suggests the form of a medium - say vinyl - embeds itself in the message - say house music - a vessel which provides information. The result: "a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived". The Remote label releases its first EP of the year in a various artist form. On the A-Side is the authoritative Chicago house revivalist Perseus Traxx with "Words For The Medium", also the EPs title. Warbling keys and stretched leads are the grounding Perseus Traxx uses for his trademark house-jack percussion to run all over, while Lakumer's debut opus "Kensal Price" also features; sustained chords and crispy rides the highlight. Another debutant is Haze N Adaze with "Hurt You", a deep and forlorn house cut with dank basement beats and a distant vocal that shouts "get down". Russian producer Kemmerton, a resident DJ at Moscow's Propaganda club, rounds out the EP with vamped chords, a burly bassline and busy percussion in "Get Down".

Mantra - "Spacetime Reversal" (6:25)
Review: French label Acid Avengers come on strong with this split 12" featuring also on form UK artist Perseus Traxx on the a-side. The no frills producer brings plenty of dusty Chicago jack and wonky 303 action to his "Moskwa", while "What Do U Want From Me" is paranoid and untied thanks to the heavily traded vocals that pan about an unbalanced groove. Mantra then serves up a trio of tracks on the flip, starting with aptly named an intense lo-fi techno banger "The Swarm". "Hey Amigo" rides on a rip saw bassline and "Spacetime Reversal" is straight acid tackle for the peak time.

Perseus Traxx - "Manque"
Posthuman - "A Better Me"
Review: Horn Wax is always a trusted outpost for intriguing, often haunting forays into the world of machine powered house and techno, and so it goes on edition 11 as Perseus Traxx and Posthuman take a side each to extol the virtues of electronic exploration. Perseus Traxx is in an especially romantic mood with the blown out tones of "Manque" straining through a fog of reverb and dust, creating a truly mesmerizing jacker in the process. Posthuman by way of contrast keeps things clear and concise, preferring a sinsister, sleazy approach to acid that rides a slower tempo and sounds all the more alluring for it.

Parrish Smith - "Revolution Will Always Be Televised"
Pankow - "Das Vodkalied" (Helena Hauff remix)
Pankow - "Das Vodkalied"
Pankow - "I’m Food For You"
Perseus Traxx - "Get Away"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Parrish Smith's debut of dystopic forbidding sets the tone of this label's impressive first release with a superb stark, acid ridden slab of body music. Helena Hauff adds to the proceedings with her remix of Pankow's"Das Vodkalied" taking no prisoners and using heavy percussion in contrast to a wonderfully tense set of arpeggiations, which all descend into skull crushing pressure. Carrying over to the flip side are Pankow, pioneers of the Italian Industrial/EBM scene, with two tracks from their legendary first tape "Throw Out Rite" from 1983. With "Das Vodkalied" disembodied vocals are cut up and come from every direction driven by a raw, off-kilter energy and pounding beat. "I'm Food For You" cranks up the drive and anxiety to create a killer track based around stark arpeggiation. Last of all, Perseus Traxx provides an acidic stripped down venting of frustrations which he spits out with vehemence.
