Review: It was arguably 2007 debut LP "Underwater Dancehall" - still one of the greatest dubstep albums of all time - that made Tectonic co-founder Pinch one of British bass music's most celebrated talents, so this solo sequel is long overdue. Much has changed in UK bass - and his life - since then, and "Reality Tunnels" reflects that. Much more widescreen in approach and sound, it sees him flit between vocal grime and dubstep, 21st century jungle mutations, future dub, ambient soundscapes, deconstructed dancehall and - most surprisingly of all - weighty, bass-heavy, Bristol style techno. Some fans may be surprised at the decidedly different directions, but it all makes perfect sonic sense - after all, British bass music has long been about more than just dubstep and D&B.

Border Control (4:21)
Fortune Tellers (5:07)
Loose Cables (4:02)
Review: Tectonic bossman Pinch on Berceuse Heroique? Now this is a match made in boundary-breaking heaven. Not even the lead track "Border Control" can keep things confined as we're hurled into a swampy, heady, paranoid and relentless stampede which is just as much techno as it is 140. "Fortune Tellers" brings us back down to even woozier 125 as layers of off-kilter percussion scuffle up and down the mix in a blurry, sense-deceiving way before "Loose Cables" turns us inside out with its tripletty off-beat, subaquatic pressure. A one of a kind artist on a one of a kind label; there are no borders here.

Cold New Worlds (4:12)
Review: Having spent much of the last few years working with one of his idols, On U-Sound legend Adrian Sherwood, Rob 'Pinch' Ellis returns with a first solo single since January 2016. "Water Bomb" is a suitably bombastic affair, with Ellis creating a heavyweight rhythm out of manipulated recordings of running and splashing water. This is then combined with a typically heavy, thrusting bassline to create an intoxicating, futurist dubstep roller. Flip for "Cold New Worlds", where the tall Bristolian offers an altogether icier voyage into Autechre-influenced post-dubstep pastures. While suitably heavy and club-ready, it's also rather poignant.

Screamer (feat Riko Dan) (5:05)
No Justice (4:32)
Review: It was about time the Tectonic head honcho released an EP on his own label, and especially one as diverse and wild as this one. Pinch's "Screamer" follows the vocal riddims of Riko Dan over a dusty tech house groove, and some furious folds of mutant bass - screaming and yelling like they should. Over on the B side, Pinch contorts the groove back into his more familiar guise, offering up a crusty broken beat pattern that dissolves neatly into blasts of bass laser and swampy, sic-fi echoes. Killah.

Obsession (The Possession)
Obsession (The Possession) (Shed remix)
Review: First heard on his excellent B2B mix CD with Mumdance, Tectonic boss Pinch does the right thing and brings "The Obsession" to the 12" format, replete with Shed remix. A killer combination of 808 drums and muffled grime stabs, "The Obsession" is a nice taster for anyone who is yet to hear Pinch B2B Mumdance, straddling the crawl space between techno, dubstep and UK club hybrids with a confidence one associates with the Bristol mainstay. The aforementioned remix from Shed goes deep on a vocal staccato tip, throwing throws sounds of the original into a sonic field that grumbles and pops like slowly flowing molten lava. Essential.

Search Party
Review: Tectonic bossman Pinch has whittled his forward-thinking stick to a point so hard it could poke the eye out of an unaware London pedestrian all the way from Bristol base. "Down" is a perfect example of how ahead of the game Pinch is and is plucked from his forthcoming genre smelting mix CD of the year contender with Mumdance. It's a lesson in sludgy, early-Warp style techno that's droning and paranoid, twisting his immersive signature into an entirely new context. Flip for "Search Party", a groove that shuffles and shakes on a fractious broken beat while an array of well-tamed wobbles twist and tease each other. Long may Pinch keep whittling...

Control (5:36)
Strobe Light (5:38)
Review: Kindred innovative spirits Pinch and Mumdance collide once again. This time they've come down from their epic mitzi jag and they're back in control of their lives with strong themes of raw mechanical funk. "Control" is like Radioactiveman or perhaps Tim Wright covered in a thick toxic slime while "Strobe Light" shakes off the slurry with rampant drum flashes and a growing sense of intensity and unease that's countered by late entering blue sky pads. Properly unique.

Big Slug (feat Riko Dan) (4:42)
Lucid Dreaming (5:13)
Review: Following on from their statement b2b mix CD, Pinch and Mumdance have been back in the studio together to cook up this rough and ready single for the formers Tectonic imprint. Riko Dan brings a savage Jamaican swagger to the title track with his fired-up MC turn, while the beat keeps the pressure high from start to finish. "Lucid Dreaming" provides the moody alternative to that party-starting manifesto with some of that Pinch-esque iciness, a deadly restrained menace lingering over the track without ever needing to resort to big drops or crescendos.

Turbo Mitzi
Whiplash
Review: Increasingly joining forces to explore the icy wastes of bass-laden rave damage for darker-minded dancers, Pinch and Mumdance officially consecrate their aligned creative visions with this nasty single on Tectonic. "Turbo Mitzi" comes to life on a dread-filled string refrain that instantly sets the mood for the track, before giving way to a sparse combination of whip crack drum machine snaps and brain-drilling synth noises of a stunningly rendered glass-like quality. "Whiplash" is no less forgiving as a cavalcade of percussion flings itself about the room with malicious intent. Between the monstrous bass swells and stop-start dynamics there's going to be a whole lot of mean-tempered solitary shape-throwing occurring to this one over the coming months

Pinch & Mumdance - "Double Barrelled Mitzi (Turbo Mitzi VIP)" (4:33)
Mumdance & Logos - "Legion" (VIPinch mix) (5:17)
Review: Tectonic's double-A Team come correct! Frequent collaborators Logos, Mumdance, and Pinch come together for a killer white label 12" on the latter's Tectonic label, who incidentally are fairly ruling it in 2015!! Leading the way is a VIP rendition of Pinch and Mumdance's 2014 call to arms "Turbo Mitzi", renamed here quite appropriately as "Double Barrelled Mitzi" as it kicks like a load of buckshot to the chest. Complementing that is Pinch's long sought after VIP mix of the Mumdance and Logos game-changer "Legion". One of those no-questions-asked, purchase is necessary kind of 12"s.

Pinch & Mumdance - "Double Barreled Turbo Mitz"
Mumdance & Logos - "Move Your Body"
Ipman - "Ghostrunner"
Pinch & Mumdance - "Lucid Dreaming"
Logos - "No Skyline"
Review: Individually, Pinch and Mumdance have been responsible for some of the most forward-thinking bass music of the past year, with the former's Cold Recordings pushing the darker techno-inspired sounds of the 130 axis and the latter leaving everyone else in the dust with his twisted takes on grime and UK club music. On this mix CD for Pinch's Tectonic Recordings, the pair team up for a B2B session filled with exclusives from themselves and like-minded producers like Alex Coulton, Logos and Ipman, which joins the dots between the past, present and future of the scene. If you were worried that bass-focused music had run itself into a 4/4 shaped hole, fear not - this mix is the next step you've been waiting for.

Pinch & Roska - "Shoulda Rolla"
Roska - "Asbestos"
Review: A 70th release is no mean feat for any record label in today's climate and Tectonic Recordings celebrate such a landmark in requisite style here as label boss Pinch teams up with UK funky veteran Roska. Fans of Tectonic should be familiar to the sight of Roska and Pinch together with the label dropping their "Paranormal Activity" effort back in 2011; "Shoulda Rolla" trades the trundling forward momentum of that track a halfstep arrangement driven by a thick, stuttering bass. It's seeped in the atmospheric classicisms of dubstep as you'd expect but there's still plenty of rhythmic innovation here to keep it sounding fresh. On the flip, Roska goes solo with the snap heavy new cut "Asbestos".

Run Them Away
Review: You sometimes get the feeling Tectonic boss Rob 'Pinch' Ellis finds particular enjoyment in the process of collaboration, be it with younger artists such as Roska and Mumdance or more iconic names like Shackleton and Adrian Sherwood. The latter dub pioneer first hooked up with Pinch for a brace of excellent 12"s on his long running On U Sound label back in 2013, and the clear studio chemistry shown there made the notion of a joint LP a near certainty. Late Night Endless sees ten tracks from Sherwood's deep discography deconstructed by the pair, with the resultant fusion a deft balance of Pinch's urban paranoia and Sherwood's interstellar dub. On tracks like "Gimme Some More (Tight Like That)" and "Different Eyes" it's displayed with devastating mastery!
