Review: Vels Trio has been bubbling away for some time on the London jazz underground, wowing audiences with a suitably deep, cosmic and gently colourful take on jazz-funk shot through with musical spirituality. Celestial Dreams is the former Total Refreshment Centre regulars' first full-length excursion and it's very good indeed. After beginning with the Tangerine Dream style synthesizer soundscape that is 'Dormant Days', the talented threesome flits between dazzling, jazz-fired workouts (see 'McEnroe' and the similarly skittish, high-octane 'The Winter Games'), laidback downtempo groovers ('The Wad', the deliciously deep 'May as Well Be'), cuts smothered in vintage synthesizer sounds ('Pop Stuff', the drowsy '40.2') and spacey, quick-fix bursts of energy ('Ceegee').

Review: For their latest new album on Gondwana, and seventh full length overall, Portico Quartet draw on American minimalism and ambient music genres as well the work of the cult Japanese composer Midori Takada. They composed and recorded most of it last year and it features three movements of their typically elegant and graceful sounds. The tracks are all built around central, repeating tenets which weave in and out of one another to hypnotic and beautiful effect. Often reaching for the cosmos, the delicate drumming and serene pads all instantly grab your attention and then take you on beautifully immersive rides.

Review: This has sort of taken us by surprise but, yes, here you are, a' new Portico Quartet album! The British outfit have grown and grown since their early releases back in 2006, seemingly ahead of their time at every turn, and a new release from them is always seen as a breath of fresh air around Juno HQ. Jack Wyllie, Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Keir Vine return to Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Records, out of Manchester, with the trippy, explorative sounds of Untitled (AITAOA #2). Jazz doesn't really describe it fully enough, and ambient is way too loose a word for this smart and complex medley of harmonies, but those are precisely the first things you hear when Portico Quartet hit you speakers. Plenty of rhythm, energy and even a little bit of dread go into making this an experience from start to finish. Recommended!

Review: Matthew Halsall founded Gondwana Records in 2008. An independent label based in Manchester, it's gone on to release music by Dwight Trible, GoGo Penguin, Nat Birchall and Halsall himself. The label has won acclaim across the world and can claim the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff and Bonobo as fans. Next up are the Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet with their powerful new album Art In The Age Of Automation: where they're now rebooted as a quartet after a brief spell as the three-piece Portico. They have always been an impossible band to pin down; taking in aspects of jazz, electronica, ambient music and minimalism but the group have undoubtedly crafted their own singular sound. There's the dashing and cinematic bliss of "Objects To Place In A Tomb" and the hypnotic live drum and bass of "A Luminous Beam" amongst other highlights.

Portico Quartet & Hania Rani
Portico Quartet & Hania Rani (12" + MP3 download code)

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Hania Rani - "Nest" (Portico Quartet remix) (3:37)
  2. Portico Quartet - "With Beside Against" (Hania Rani remix) (4:12)
Review: Sometimes the simplest ideas are those that get the greatest results. This split 12" from East London cinematic jazz combo Portico Quartet and Polish pianist Hania Rani is a fine example. The two artists exchanged tracks, with the resulting reworks appearing on this superb seven-inch. The Portico Quartet's version of Rani's 'Nest' is simply superb: a dreamy, otherworldly drift through sunrise-ready jazz in which waves of undulating analogue synthesizer sounds, immersive chords and flotation tank vocal samples flutter attractively on a breeze of languid jazz drums. Rani's interpretation of Portico Quartet's 'With, Beside, Against' is arguably even more impressive. Sparse and minimalistic, it sees her add twinkling piano motifs and her own evocative vocals to a slowly unfurling, widescreen jazz workout. In a word: stunning.
