Review: By now, most know the story of 94 East. The Minneapolis band was founded in 1975 by Pepe Wille, and included amongst its' members a precocious teenager called Prince Rogers Nelson. They made over an album's worth of recordings in 1977, which remained something of a secret until Willie released them in the mid '80s to capitalize on Prince's solo success. Here, these pioneering recordings are once again made public in tribute to the sadly departed Purple One. What's so remarkable about them isn't their high quality - you'd expect that given Prince's involvement - but rather how they sound like prototypes of the distinctive "purple funk" sound that the legendary artist later made his own. The album also includes "If You Feel Like Dancin", which is arguably one of the finest "proto-house" records ever made.

Review: Prince is a name that needs no introduction. The Vault ... Old Friends 4 Sale was originally released in 1999 , a full three years after being submitted to Warner Bros in 1996. Thus, it was recorded in 1994 and 1995 which in many fans' eyes, follows some of the best Prince work when he was known as the symbol. Stylistically, the album has Prince exploring more jazz elements while still remaining clearly a Prince album. Perhaps due to Prince not doing a world tour to support the album and lack of radio friendly singles, the album wasn't the chart success that the label hoped for but to fans it holds a special place in their Prince discography.

Review: Prince's Batman soundtrack has a lot to match up to in terms of what Mr Rogers Nelson had recorded previously, or indeed after. The 1989 Tim Burton film was a resounding smash, but Prince's standalone album has a mixed legacy perhaps because of its role as a bit part in a blockbuster machine. Peel back the years and hear the songs afresh though, and there's so much to savour from the Linn Drum flaring beatdown 'Batdance' to quintessential good-time jam 'Partyman' and through to the smoochy ballad 'Scandalous'. Prince was in his prime when he made Batman, and his talent quite simply is unparalleled on this or any other album.

Review: A series of Prince albums are being reissued by Warner, including this one from 1994. By then the legendary funk artist's relationship with his label was hugely stringed and he had recently change his name, for the first of several times to [Love Symbol]. This album was one of a number that the Purple One wrote in a short space of time in order to free himself from his contract with the major label. Despite those circumstances, it is still a standout record that managed to get to Number One in the UK despite a lack of support from Prince himself upon release.

Review: We seem to be in the middle of a run of Prince reissues right now, with the focus being on those he released through Warner. The relationship eventually went sour and Prince knocked out plenty of records in quick succession to see out his deal but that didn't dint their commercial success. Albums from the entire 16-year period are being put out into the ether on vinyl and now it's the turn of 1988's Lovesexy, which came on the heels of Sign O' The Times and might be the last of his imperial phase. 'Alphabet Street' is the most noted of the singles here in an album full of seriously steamy funk sounds.

Review: The Purple One had many different official aliases but in 1995 came one of his best/worst - he was asked to be known by the unpronounceable symbol shown on the album cover of this record. Known amongst fans as the "love symbol" it was credited with this album, The Gold Experience, his impressive seventeenth studio long player overall. The whole record was produced by the legendary singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist himself and as with most of his works it reached the upper end of the Billboard chart. Standouts include the likes of 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World', 'I Hate U', and 'Gold'. One of many essential albums in his oeuvre.

Review: The legacy and catalogue of Prince is one which continues to reveal surprises and swerves even this many years after his death. There are a lot of different phases to dig into, but if you want the exhaustive run through his breakout years, look no further than the Hits 1 and 2 collections. Put together by Warner in 1993, as their relationship with the famously strong-willed artist was going south, this pair of compilations feature every hit that matters from 1979 through to 1992. There are stone-cold classics and some deeper fan favourites and rarities included - so many in fact it has to be stretched over two separate volumes.

Review: While Prince made an awful lot of incredible records, it was on stage where he often delivered his most magical work. This double-disc set, which features previously broadcast recordings of the late, great musical genius's performance with his New Power Generation band at the 1991 Rock in Rio festival, offers a timely reminder of this fact. Alongside righteous, sometimes riotous performances of familiar hits - 'Let's Go Crazy', 'Nothing Compares 2 U', 'Purple Rain' and 'Kiss' - we get jammed-out versions of album cuts and B-sides, Aretha Franklin covers featuring guest vocals from Rosie Gaines, and a handful of extended medlies feauring everything from famous movie themes, and funk/soul classics, to lesser-known jams from the Prince catalogue. In a word: essential!

Funk
Review: Who could have known back in 1977 that Prince would become the legend he remains even after his death? OK, so the supreme talent was absolutely there to behold on this, his debut album, but even so it would be hard to imagine the absolute magnitude of his gifts he bestowed upon the world and musical culture in general. It's always fascinating with hindsight to wind back to the start and hear such a mercurial talent on the rise, and beyond all that For You is just a magical album on its own terms, with all the come hither heat you'd expect from the Purple wonder.

Review: Welcome 2 America is the first posthumous album from Prince that is made up entirely of never-before-released material. It follows a state-of-the-union-concept and fide the Purple One espousing blunt views on everything from drugs to religion, the music industry to taxes and technology. The music was discovered by Prince's archivist Michael Howe on a load of CD-Rs and is backed by bassist Tal Wilkenfeld and drummer Chris Coleman. It was recorded in 2010 and had a tour named after it but the album was shelved before we got to hear it. While not all gold, there is plenty here for fans old and new to get excited by.

Review: Welcome 2 America, the first posthumous album release of previously unheard music from Prince's bulging archives, may not be up to the dizzyingly high standards he set himself, but it's still a hugely enjoyable collection of cuts. Prince recorded it with his New Power Generation band in 2010 ahead of a world tour, but eventually decided against releasing it. Musically, it's typical of the great man - think looser than normal shuffling, musically layered purple soul and funk in his inimitable style- and it does genuinely contain some gems. These include 'Born 2 Die', which reminded us of the conscious soul of Curtis Mayfield; 'Welcome 2 America', where Prince's spoken word vocals take aim at the USA during the Obama era, and the guitar-laden Purple Rain-era throwback 'Hot Summer'.

Review: This special 180g, peach-coloured version of Sign O' The Times is a faithful reproduction of the original, but there is also a super expanded reissue due that unveils a real wealth of unheard songs that are sure to send fans wild. That said, the original from 1987 is already classed as a masterpiece amongst many fans of The Purple One. As well as the well known singles, it serves up cold minimal funk, party jams, musings on the bleak realism of life and all manner of impossible fusion of jazz, soul, rock, pop, synth and gospel that only this most special of artists could have pulled off.

Review: Prince fans - and that's most of us, right? - are being treated to some superb reissues and compilations at present. Here's another: a Japanese-only CD edition of 1985's "His Majesty's Pop Life: The Purple Mix Club". The set started life as a promo-only vinyl affair, gathering together a mixture of extended club mixes and album versions of some of his Purpleness's greatest '80s hits. Our highlights include the stripped-back but undeniably heavy "remix" of "Paisley Park", the thrillingly epic, ever-changing long version of "Erotic City", a punchy club take on "When Doves Cry" and the extended, end-of-night sing-along that is the "New Mix" of "Raspberry Beret".

Review: For all of his undoubted musical genius, many of Prince's albums could be a little hit-and-miss. That's not an accusation that could be hurled at Sign O' The Times, which remains one of the Purple One's most potent collections of songs. As this vinyl reissue proves, the 1987 set still sounds every bit as good as it did all those years ago. While there are plenty of well-known hits - the peerless social commentary of 'Sign O' The Times', the sexual thrust of 'Hot Thing', the gnarly dancefloor funk of 'You Got The Look', and so on - the album's lesser-known moments, from the rockin' strut of "Play In The Sunshine", to the heartfelt, stripped-back "The Cross", are equally as inspired. File under "essential listening".

Review: Few words required: Prince's legacy is like no other and will live on as long as there is music. His self-titled sophomore release, of his 39 studio album repertoire this one is especially significant. You can hear him revelling in experimentalism, playing with ideas that would become the lead on future works (such as the big glam guitars on "Bambi" and lewd, brazen slap bass on "Sexy Dancer"), it also contains his original version of "I Feel For You" (famously covered by Chaka Khan) and his first hit single "I Wanna Be You Lover". Laced with some really heart-rending ballads (made all the more poignant since he passed away), it's one of many testaments that we'll never forget him. Rest in peace.

Review: A few short weeks on from his untimely death, Prince's final studio album (that we know of, at least) hits the shelves. It was conceived as a partner piece to last year's HitNRun Phase 1, and, like that set, sees the Purple One reunited with '90s backing band The New Power Generation. Happily, it's a hugely enjoyable set, featuring Prince's usual mixture of white-hot funk jams ("Stare", "Xtraloveable"), fuzzy dancefloor rock ("Screwdriver"), stirring ballads ("Revelation"), cheery purple pop ("Big City", "Groovy Potential") and thrillingly loose, horn-heavy workouts ("2.Y 2.D"). As a parting gift to fans, it's superb, and offers a poignant reminder of just how good Prince could be.

It found him working with his trusty New Power Generation and features the 'damn near 10 min' mix of the song 'Gett Off' which is sure to fire up any dancefloor. It was originally a single - also served up as a one-sider - to promote Prince's new band with a cover that boldly declared that "Nothing can stop Prince and the New Power Generation" and was only issued on 1500 copies, so this is a great treat for fans to own all these years later.

Review: Prince and the New Power Generation strode into the 90s full power with Diamonds & Pearls, one of the all-time greats from the purple legend’s imperious canon. It’s a record which shows the full force of Prince’s songwriting power from the fired-up bangers like ‘Thunder’ and ‘Gett Off’ to the none-sexier ‘Cream’ through to the heart-melting ballads ‘Diamonds & Pearls’ and ‘Strollin’. It’s a plush, high-end sound which comes through in startling clarity on this remastered reissue. In line with the other recent Prince reissues, this is the definitive deluxe edition of the record presented across four discs bursting with alternative takes, remixes, B sides and unreleased gems which take us even deeper into the genius of one of the greatest to ever do it.

Review: The sad passing of Prince Rogers Nelson has given an opportunity to those who wish to celebrate the great man's immense musical legacy. The latest to do so are exclusive promo-only remix merchants DMC. Classic Mixes: I Love Prince Volume 2 gathers together rare megamixes and DJ-friendly reworks, all of which were originally released as part of the organisation's subscription service during the '80s and '90s. Look out for a fantastically bouncy and spacey revision of "Erotic City" by Ben Liebrand, a thrillingly stab-happy, cut-up house version of "Batdance" from Mike 'Hitman' Wilson, and a groovy, stretched-out fresh-up of "Sign O' The Times" by "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked" man Chad Jackson.
