Deep Down In My Heart (vocal)
Deep Down In My Heart (instrumental)
Review: It's straight back to church for Rahaan's 2nd release on LDF! Combining forces once again with Angel-A on vocals, the bluesy guitar and organ marry perfectly to bring a laid-back gospel vibe straight from the heart. The swinging drums, rumbling bass and fervent backing vocals of the choir fill out the track; evoking images of finger snapping, swaying and hands up to the sky - praise the Lord!

I'm In Love Dancin' (7:03)
Imma Phreak (6:22)
Review: The irrepressible Gamm label knows a thing or two about disco, funk and soul. Yet more irrefutable evidence for that claim comes from this tidy 12" two tracker featuring some lost remixes. 'I'm In Love Dancin' takes source sounds from Arthur Russell's classic 'Is It All Over My Face' and repurposes them with gangling percussive lives, sunny flutes and mad horns to make for something that will shake your body loose. Flip it over for the steamy, sensuous, intense disco stomps of 'Imma Phreak' complete with fame coos and cries and plenty of dance floor clout. The legendary Rahaan and DJ Emanuel are in fine form here.

The M8 Track (9:07)
Review: As we roll further into the New Year we're still enjoying the arrival of plenty of new labels. Now Is Not The Time is one of them from the US that takes a bow here with its first EP, Lost In The Message. It's a three-way collab between the legendary Rahaan plus DJ Reg and Jerome O. What they do is chip up classic samples and killer grooves form the worlds of funk, soul, house and disco with 'Lost In The Message' kicking off in freewheeling fashion. 'Get Up Out Tha Water' has oems nice big horn energy and plenty of whistles and 'The M8 Track' is a deeper house sound with a belting diva vocal.

Lay Far - "Never Ever Edit" (4:53)
Admin - "Moon Trippin'" (6:28)
Rahaan - "Gonna Get Ya" (5:55)
Delfonic - "Let's Dance The Spank" (5:41)
Review: Funkyjaws Music launches a new edits series here with four absolute dons of the form on one vital 12". It's Lay Far that kicks off with 'Never Ever Edit' which is all horn-led excitement and upbeat disco claps and kicks before Admin's 'Moon Trippin' takes a more slow and soulful approach. When it comes to edits few are more essential than Chicago's Rahaan who kicks off the B-side with 'Gonna Get Ya', a leggy funk number infused with cosmic synth rays and warm piano chords. Delfonic shuts down with the loose percussive jumbles and jazzy vibes of 'Let's Dance The Spank'. A fine start to the series with volume two already in the works.

Tim McAllister - "Rollin'"
Cratebug - "Get Up Move Your Body"
Rahaan - "Buari Traxx"
Review: It's a family affair as Grimy returns with heat from the windy city known for amazing dance edits. Tim McAllister takes it out the gate with "Rollin'", a classic soul/disco beater replete with joyous flute trills, Leslie speaker efx and a pumping house kick. In-demand newcomer Cratebug's "Get Up Move Your Body" is a spacious, cosmic edit of a little-remembered Canadian gem. The song ends with an intuitive synth jam that will be enjoyed by DJs and home listeners alike. Longtime Grimy associate Rahaan ends things with a bang. His largely original "Buari Traxx" mixes Ghanaian rhythms with killer disco bass and the nuanced, tracky drum programming you could find on a DanceMania record. The brilliant track is built for the floor and also serves as an apt transition into Grimy Trax, a sister label that will release all new music. Chicago's still burning.

Secondo (Versione) (6:26)
Review: If you don't have love for Rahsaan then you don't have love for life. The American is a veteran of the edit scene and someone who can flip any joint into a joyous groove. Here, Hot Biscuit have assembled a limited double 12" that brings together some of his best 'Disco Edits, Versions & Dubs." 'Big Bisou' opens up with a jumble of Afro drums and loose limbed rhythms, 'Mamoe Lowe' then has tribal vocal chants and raw percussive energy, and 'Preto Velho' then brings a little more laid back soul to the party. '77' is a funky disco strider and 'Secondo' closes with some hard assed funk.

The Wind (Rahaan remix)
Baby Baby Please (Rahaan remix)
Review: Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings unleashes a new offshoot, Typewriter Record Pool, with main label regular Rahaan at the controls. A-side 'Wind' sees the Chicagoan digger, DJ and scalpel fiend take on Christopher Cross's 1980 classic 'Ride Like The Wind', the soft rock legend's dalliance with synth-sporting AOR disco, extending it in all the right places while giving the track a slightly more floor-focused spin. Over on the reverse, 'Baby Baby Please' sees Rahaan stick a Windy City disco rocket under Thelma Houston's frequently overlooked, Clavinet-heavy cover of Philadelphia International favourite 'Don't Leave Me This Way'. Wisely, Rahaan constructs the track as a colossal builder, making great use of the more improvised and expressive parts of Houston's breathlessly brilliant vocal.

Welcome To The Club (Rahaan instrumental remix) (9:12)
Review: Chicagoan DJ/producer Rahaan has always managed to knock out some of the classiest edits in the game. But right now a bunch of his new material is arriving on various labels, as well as some more of his red-hot edits. And it is that which he serves up here for the Typewriter Record Pool's second limited edition 12". His remix of 'Welcome To The Club' is all chopped-up chord sequences and jazzy drumming, a heartfelt groove that explodes with bigger stabs and a mighty fine falsetto vocal sample. On the B-side is 'Welcome To The Club' but the Rahaan instrumental remix without the vocals and extra string goodness.

Feeling Good (5:06)
Review: Fast-rising re-edit imprint Hot Biscuit Recordings continues to serve up previously unreleased reworks from the archives of Chicagoan DJ/producer Rahaan, whose re-edits have long been regarded as some of the best in the game. A-side 'Toc & Tic' is a fine rearrangement of a quirky disco cut rich in loved-up vocals, jazzy electric piano solos, spacey synth doodles and memorable riffs. Over on side B, 'Feeling Good' is a great edit of a more classic-sounding mid-tempo disco number that comes complete with heady horns, 'walking' bass, sweeping strings and glassy-eyed female lead vocals. Dope edits for diggers and those who want to show off the depth of their disco knowledge!

Review: Rahaan is a Chicago legend and master of the most soulful sounds in the studio. His new EP for BBE, 'We Are The Ones,' sees him joining up with a whole host of top musicians such as Marcus J. Austin and Nancy Clayton on vocals, Carnell C. Newbill on keys, Todd Swope on guitar and Lou Terry on bass. Between them they bring real dance floor adventures that are steeped in proper musicality. Ohio Players' Kenny Anderson on the horns brings some real soul to these four-to-the-floor cuts which mix up disco and house in the finest of fashion.

Welcome To The Club (Rahaan remix) (6:39)
Welcome To The Club (Rahaan instrumental remix) (9:13)
Review: Since it emerged last autumn, Hot Biscuit Recordings - a Newcastyle-on-Tyne based imprint - has leant heavily on the edit archives of legendary Chicagoan DJ Rahaan. Here they make another deep dive into his vaults, returning with vocal and instrumental 'remixes' (basically edits, though presumably with a few added flourishes and subtle extra instrumentation) of an obscure disco gem. The A-side original revision subtly stretches out the beats before settling into a Clavinet-laden, horn-toting disco groove. Rahaan later teases in the original orchestration and a sublime, Curtis Mayfield-esque lead vocal. It's superb, as is the flipside 'Instrumental Mix', which sees him make merry with jammed-out electric piano solos, swelling strings and a near-perfect bassline.

Review: Rahaan is one of those artists who you know will always come through. His music is a direct connection to an era when producers managed to capture real and raw energy in tracks that brim with musicianship and good time grooves. This time out he does just that on Neighboursoul Rhythm, serving up four fine hits. 'To The Point' is a soul drenched, hi tempo disco cut with intense strings, drums and vocals, then 'Cuttin' Loose' strips things back but honest slow down, racing along a smooth and sweet disco groove. 'Last Thing' is all about the majestic strings and funky bass and 'Black Magik' pulls no punches.

"Down Comes The Rain" struts with a Princely vibe and a piano-slapping flare that'll have your floor dancing for well over 17 days. Blue Line
Review: Edit king Rahaan makes a connection with the ever-prolific Lumberjacks In Hell, and he's sounding feisty on growling lead track "Move Out Of The Way". Dirty, distorted drums and simmering acid gurgles make for a perfect seedy dancefloor lube, setting the scene for the more forthright jack beat styles of "Super Transfer". Keeping the fuzzed out Chicago styles at the forefront, "Blue Line" swoops in at the end like some long lost Trax off-cut with all the grit and guts you would expect from the earliest days of pure, electronic house music.

You Got The Right To Dance (Rahaan edit)
Review: **Repress** Chicago disco legend Rahaan gets busy with two on-point edits for the long running Disco Deviance label. "Sweet Stuff" is Rahaan's take on Nino Tempo & 5th Avenue Sax. Warm chords, wheezing horns and a lolloping groove that builds and builds from smooth soul to straight up jazz funk. Flip for "You Got The Right To Dance", a fizzy take on Muzic Box, the horns are buried deep under an array of disco FX and heavy reverb while the vocals cut through with syrupy charm. Show stopping.

Review: Hands down winner of 'title of the week', this cheeky disco number is brought to us by Chicago veteran Rahaan. Boasting the vocals of the mysterious Saucy Lady, the original is a warm and glowing retro disco romp complete with authentic brass and strings. Rahaan also provides a larger, extended mix in which he strips the opulence down to a more bareback groove, inserting a big and nasty raw electro bassline to help bring the dancefloor to a suitable climax (of joy).

If You Know Like I Know
Review: Chicago legend Rahaan is back on Jerome Derradji's Stilove4music imprint with some decidedly raw and dusty dancefloor tweaks housed in the most minimal of vinyl packaging. Whilst a blank house bag and unlabelled twelve inch is the epitome of no thrills, thankfully Rahaan steps up musically with the A Side dedicated to an extended minimalist version of Lipps Inc's "Funky Town" that's delightfully augmented by some additional "toot toot, beep beeps" from the first lady of disco, Donna Summer. Essentially Rahaan breathes new life into a track that's veering on the overplayed by stripping it of its musical excesses and concentrating on turning the remains into something sweaty and hypnotic. On the flip "Love Bug" pitches down the helium centric disco craziness of Bumblebee Unlimited's song of the same name to something more palatable and rearranges the track to shift the focus onto those glorious strings with the final product something less frenetic. Finally Teddy Pendergrass' already downright funky "If You Know Like I Know" gets embellished with some bottom end rawness.

I Need You (86 House mix) (5:25)
I Need You (Acid mix) (5:29)
I Need You (Soul version) (7:22)
Review: Having released a swathe of killer re-edits by Rahaan, it's little surprise to find Hot Biscuit Recordings serving up his new original production, albeit on a new sub-label, Yellow Taxi Records. 'I Need You' was written by the track's featured artist, soulful vocalist Kihmy, and is presented in three contrasting forms. On the A-side, Rahaan explores the house side of his musical identity, first wrapping Kihmy's vocal, suspenseful keyboard melodies and gorgeous proto-house stabs around an addictive, effects-laden bassline and jacking drum machine beats on the '86 House Mix', before going darker and more psychedelic on the TB-303-powered 'Acid Mix'. As good as they are, the most joyous mix of all resides on side B: the 'Soul Mix', which offers a warmer, mid-tempo, disco-influenced interpretation full to bursting with luscious live instrumentation.

Review: Borne out of the energy of the long running and much loved infrequent Sydney club night of the same name, the People Must Jam label has acted as a good conduit for the feel good disco those the other side of a large pond could expect from attending one of their parties. After two solo records from the ALWAYS EXCELLENT Mark Seven and local hero Inskwel, Sydney label People Must Jam return to the format with which they opened proceedings on the label; the split release Floor Jammers series. Volume 2 is fairly dominated by a classic slice of hi tempo instrumental disco from Chicago legend Rahaan, with Andy Ash and Beaten Space Probe winding down the tempo for two boogie laced cuts. Don't sleep on the final heavy proto house dub action from In The Sticks - some kicks on this one!

Swinging To The Bass (Bruce Ivery remix)
Review: The music of London based collective Los Charly's Orchestra dips a 70s boogie sound with a Latin touch, and lends itself well to the exemplary mixing talents of Chi-town don Rahaan, who remixes "Swinging To The Bass" for Dopeness Galore Holland. Rahaan captures the funk that lies at the core of this track, using it as the base on which to manipulate and twist the music. It's a light footed disco cut, with a hook that slices clean through the spattering of jazz-licked murmurings. The dub mix overwhelms you with a driving bass line and tinkling piano solo, with Rahaan borrowing each epic element and composing a fresh and lively sound. Do check.

War I Declare
Review: The excellent Lumberjacks In Hell imprint has served up some fine edits in its short lifespan to date, most notably from Chicago's Mutant Beat Dancer Traxx and the label's latest release turns to two other Windy City residents renowned for their collections and skills. Rahaan needs little introduction for the disco loving community with essential drops on Stillove4music, Disco Deviance and more, whilst Mr Sounds runs the excellent Bring The Heat website. This twelve is all about the A Side "Rainin Bleeding Boy" which puts a well loved UK EBM couple through the dub laden beatdown grinder - though DJs will get plenty of mileage out of both tracks on the B Side with "Flip Side" some supremely chopped up disco funk and "War I Declare" a stomping and heavily filtered bomb.

Bump & Hustle Music (Zernell & Rahaan edit)
Review: The Luv N' Haight Edits series launched in style earlier this year, enlisting Nico Jaar and 78 Edits to rework two Mike James Kirkland classics to tie in with the annual Record Store Day festivities. This second volume sees Chicago duo Rahaan and Zernell tackle music from Tommy Stewart's self titled 1976 album, recently reissued by the Ubiquity sub label. If you're not familiar with Stewart's work then you need to check that LP, one of the defining releases of the pre-disco era and two of its highlights are given respectful touchdowns on this clear 12". There's an obvious deftness to the way Rahaan and Zernell loop up the intro bars of "Practice What You Preach" before dropping in those killer strings and then launching into the song itself, while the dirty funk of "Bump & Hustle Music" is only made more apparent by the duo's subtle arrangements. Big 12" for the discotheques!
