Hubris Variation
Cat: BLACKTRUFFLE 024. Rel: 16 Nov 16
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Hubris Variation (part 1) (14:16)
  2. Hubris Variation (part 2) (13:12)
Review: Given that Ricardo Villalobos was one of a handful of guest producers who featured on Oren Ambarchi's recent Hubris album - a krautrock-influenced minimalist techno exploration that also boasted contributions from Jim O'Rourke and Mark Fell, amongst others - it seems fitting that he's been roped in to provide two new remixes. The Chilean's contribution to the album was largely rhythm-based, and his two lengthy Variations - each stretched across one side of wax - promote undulating, heads-down dancefloor hypnotism above all else. Naturally, his drum programming and use of subtle stylistic shifts is as on-point as ever, with Ambarchi's original textures being manipulated into mind-altering new shapes.

Neunachi EP
Neunachi EP (limited gold vinyl 12")
Cat: RWX 013G. Rel: 16 Nov 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Neunachi (13:14)
  2. Detrant (12:55)
Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

Neunachi EP
Cat: RWX 013. Rel: 16 Nov 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Neunachi (13:10)
  2. Detrant (12:54)
Review: By now, we should know what to expect from Chilean minimalist Ricardo Villalobos, namely eccentric, off-kilter rhythms subtly influenced by his south American heritage, smooth but impactful bass, a smattering of weird electronic noises and mangled vocal samples pulled from the depths of an imagined K-hole. You get that in spades on 'Neunachi', the 13-minute lead cut from his latest Rawax double-header. It's classic Villalobos with a nightmarish twist - all backwards vocal samples, brain-melting rhythmic elements and subtle shifts of sonic emphasis. Flipside 'Detrant' is no less odd, though the skittish machine beats underpinning the collage of South American samples and wayward noises is pretty sturdy and straightforward. Of course, the track itself is anything but straightforward, but that's always been a big part of Villalobos's early morning allure.

Aslohop EP
Aslohop EP (limited brown marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: RWX 012B. Rel: 21 Sep 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Aslohop (12:28)
  2. Detrand (21:00)
Review: Earlier in the year, Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Villalobos reached an agreement with Rawax for the long-established label to release a series of singles and, more remarkably, a digital-only, hour-long track called 'Matsu'. This brown, marbled vinyl 12" is the first in the sequence of singles to hit stores and contains two typically lengthy workouts. Lead cut 'Aslohop' leads the way, with Villalobos once again delivering entrancing action built around oddly programmed, distinctively swung South American drum hits, curious noises and a hypnotic, undulating bassline. Flipside 'Detrand' is an even more spaced-out and druggy affair, with various barely audible samples subtly rising and falling for 21 minutes atop another deliciously out-there rhythm track.

Dependent & Happy Part 1
Cat: PERLON 92-1. Rel: 22 Aug 12
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Tu Actitud
  2. Timemorf
  3. Grumax
  4. I'm Counting
  5. Das Leben Ist So Anders Ohne Dich
  6. Mochnochich
Review: Ricardo Villalobos's third full-length (unless you count his Fabric mix and Re: ECM project with Max Loderbauer) entitled Dependent & Happy had been eagerly anticipated since its announcement early this year, and on its vinyl release finds its 14 tracks split up across 5x12" singles. The results are as sublime as you would expect from the master of minimal; "Tu Actitud" opens with its half-spoken vocals and jaunty electric bass, "Timemorf" continues with its minimal Chilean rhythms, while "Grumax" is the undisputed highlight - a combination of tense, sprung bass and discordant strings arranged in the way only Villalobos can.

Changes EP Part 2
Changes EP Part 2 (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: TOS 008. Rel: 01 May 20
Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Changed (10:40)
  2. Periodico (12:00)
Review: We were hugely impressed by the first part of Ricardo Villalobos and Daniel Maher's collaborative EP series, which naturally saw them play to their strengths while offering up distinctive tracks that stood out from the crowd. Predictably they're at it again on EP number two. A-side "Changed" is particularly potent, with the pair peppering a typically wonky and minimalist but also pleasingly percussive group with trippy, effects-laden spoken word snippets and echoing, spaced-out dub techno style melodic motifs. Flipside "Periodico" is a slightly more forthright affair built around a sturdier, immaculately layered percussive groove, a deliciously simple one-note stab, drowsy chords and the duo's usual K-hole-friendly vocal samples.

Review: As time passes, the increasingly prolific partnership of Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer moves farther into the wilderness, both artists emboldened by their shared sense of adventure and peerless skill. Here, on this LP for Mana, they're shrugging off all shackles in an exploration of synthesis on a molecular level. What's so thrilling is that patterns and rhythms do emerge from within this primordial soup, winding up in some of the most gorgeous and beguiling works we've tripped on for some time. Otherworldly, but somehow grounded with an earthly instinctive-ness, "The Clouds Know" will take time to wrap your head around, but therein lies the beauty.
