  2. Willie Wonka - "What Is House" (Andy Blake edit)
  3. Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Richard Sen edit)
  4. Mr Lee - "Pump Up Chicago" (JD Twitch edit)
Review: Whilst all the vinyl samplers for this DJ History curated Trax Re-edit compilation are worth investigating, it's perhaps this third volume that screams essential the most by virtue of the presence of JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Richard Sen, Toby Tobias and Hardway Bros as the resident re-editors. Nor do they disappoint either as Hardway Bros team up with Rekids type Tobias and introduce some driving energetic synth patterns into Adonis' "We're Rocking Down This House" as well as embellishing the bottom end for a modern day warehouse thumper. Equally good is Cave Painter Andy Blake teasing out the rubbery off kilter undertones to Willy Wonka's spoken word drum machine thriller "What Is House" whilst retaining the raw, stuttering core. On the flip, Richard Sen goes deep on the signature synth stabs to Ron Hardy's "Sensation" which will destroy the more discerning dancefloors out there. Finally JD Twitch strips Mr. Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" of its really quite silly overtones and twists the track into a brilliantly hypnotic and menacing acid tinged late night jacker

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from the Muzic Box Classics series; namely a bumper selection of largely little-known gems played by legendary DJ Ron Hardy at Chicago's infamous Muzic Box club. The script is little different to previous instalments, delivering a raw mix of '80s acid, early jack tracks, bleep-heavy deep house and decidedly wonky early vocal house cuts. There's the odd foray into early piano-house (see "In The Mix") and Arthur Russel-ish fusion ("Go Exciting"), with a string of European post-punk cuts included to show the breadth of Hardy's influences. It is what it is, but there are enough gems to suggest further investigation.

Review: The seemingly bottomless archives of prime Ron Hardy edits are raided once more for the eleventh plate in the RDY series arriving on the murkiest translucent vinyl we've seen in some time. Hardy's official 1986 remix of "Donnie" from The It sits on the B Side and for those unfamiliar to its intoxicating charms, this makes a welcome opportunity to indulge. It's all about the A Side for us however; Hardy's magical take on "Peaches & Prunes" which is a masterclass in gruff editing, is joined by the crazy "Passion" which sounds like The Flirts classic melted down completely.

Review: Thirteen is unlucky for some, but that's not the case when it comes to the hugely popular RDY label which digs through the vast archives of Muzic Box favourites pioneered by the legend that was Ron Hardy for a thirteenth time. On the A Side is a classic example of Ron's style, extending the intro to "Adventure" by The Dells into 8 minutes of blissful disco excellence, whilst the take on "Love Surge" embellishes the electronic nuances of Jules Shear's mid 80s synth pop curio. House heads will be all over the final cut, a "Untitled" production/edit Hardy collaborated with fellow Chi-town House pioneer Jesse Saunders which has box jam brilliance written into it's DNA.

Review: The RDY series of archival material from Ron Hardy's clearly sizeable collection of Music Box ready edits reaches its seventh edition sporting a delightfully dusty take on the classic soul classic "Love & Happiness". Recently covered to great effect by Legowelt under his House Of Jezebel moniker for Rush Hour, Hardy's uncovered re-edit matches Wolfers in the potency stakes though it's even more notable for deftly switching between vocals from the Al Green and First Choice versions. Flipside and there's a funked up version of "Flamethrower" from Massachusetts blues rock troupe The J Geils Band which really works the moog solo, whilst there's another Hardy rarity to end proceedings with a smudgy take on Streetlife's "Tearin Down the Walls".

Review: Following last month's first instalment of the bootleg Muzic Box Classics series, we're presented with another selection of tried-and-tested killers dropped by the legendary Ron Hardy at Chicago's Music Box club. As with the first CD, there's a good mix of classic early Chicago house material (see "Stay Out" and "Forever & 1 Day"), Kraftwerk-ish proto-techno ("Techno"), bustling acid ("Ride Em Boy", "A Land", the latter an edit of an old Armando classic), vintage deep house ("It Is") and dubby New York fare ("Tension"). There's also a tribute to Hardy's love of playing certain records backwards in the shape of a reversed mix of "Is It All Over My Face". Beefy.

Review: The much welcomed Ron Hardy edit series continues apace with another two divine tweaks from the seminal Chicago DJ's vaults. First up is a track synonymous with the history of The Music Box's finest, First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder". It's a delicate touch he applied to one of the all time greats of disco, but it accentuates the celebratory escapism in the track, a quality that came to define the style of Hardy and his ilk. His edit of "Your Love" hones right in on the drums, hammering out the finest Chicago box bashing goodness, although this unreleased version features additional female vocals.

Review: The legacy of the late, great Ron Hardy continues to be plundered/represented by the Muzic Box Classics series, which appropriately presents a selection of cuts made famous by the man himself at his Chicago venue. Whether or not the versions contained here are Hardy re-edits isn't clear. Either way, there's plenty of quality material to enjoy. Opening with a typically forthright 303 tweaker, the album moves from vintage new order to hands-raised house classics ("Ride The Rhythm", "Bird In A Guilded Cage") via European new wave curiosities ("Liasons"), E'd-up disco ("Together") and classic James Brown ("Body Heat").

  2. It's House
  3. Hardy Drums
Review: And so Ron Hardy's bottomless vault continues to deliver. It's a tale of two Rons too; Side A is all about Ron as an editor as Blue Magic's 1974 soul disco classic "Welcome To The Club" gets a mighty extension with a drawn out groove and added emphasis on the majestic keys. Flip for Hardy's darker, proto-house side as we're introduced to two massive slabs of rhythmic naughtiness. "It's House" is based around a tripped out loop that flickers in and out of the groove with great warped effect while "Hardy Drums" lives up to its name in every way. With its rough distorted 808 bass and chop-slapping hi-hats, few records encapsulate the undiluted jacking spirit of house music's earliest days than this.

  1. JM Silk - "Can't Turn Around"
  2. Sleezy D - "Trust Track"
Review: When the house music phenomenon was beginning, Chicago DJs like Ron Hardy and New Yorkers such as Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan would be inundated with demos from producers desperate to get their break at clubs like the Music Box, the Warehouse and Paradise Garage. Muzic Box Classics Vol. 2 holds two underground Chicago tracks rescued from Hardy's personal collection of reel 2 reels, popularised at the Music Box and rarely heard anywhere else. "I Can't Turn Around" was produced by JM Silk aka Steve Hurley (Farley Jackmaster Funk's old flatmate) and as far as I can gather, was the blueprint for Farley's classic "Love Can't Turn Around", released on DJ International and Trax Records back in 1986. The B-side track "Trust Track" is an old cut by Sleezy D. This track was never pressed to vinyl and is as rare as they come! This title is very limited, and weighs in a bit more expensive than Vol 1 as it's housed in a picture sleeve dedicated to the legend Ron Hardy.

Review: Given the longevity of Ron Hardy's residency at Chicago's Muzic Box, not to mention his legendary status as trailblazing DJ with an unquenchable lust for life, there's no shortage of material to fill the Muzic Box Classics series. Like its predecessors, this ninth instalment in the series is full to bursting with quality material, from the funk-rock genius of the Rolling Stones's "Lucky Love" and bass-heavy dub brilliance of Joe Gibbs's "Chapter 3", to the post-punk strut of Gang of Four's "Damaged Goods" and sax-laden madness of Propaganda's new wave oddity "Frozen Faces". There's also another chance to enjoy one of Brian Eno and David Byrne's greatest moments, a brilliant "The Jezebel Spirit".

Review: In some ways, it's amazing that the illicit RDY label is still finding unreleased, overlooked, or little-known Ron Hardy edits and productions to fill their vinyl-only series. This is their 25th release in six years, and they show no signs of calling it quits. All three tracks here are on a stretched-out, dubbed-out electronic disco tip, beginning with what appears to be Hardy's reel-to-reel extension of Disco Dream & The Androids' quirky 1979, Moroder-ish arpeggio-jam "Dream Machine". Flip for an all-instrumental dub take on Craig Peyton's decidedly wonky, electro-disco cover of "Be Thankful For What You've Got" and "116 BPM Trax", an un-credited, boogie-era, proto-house jam full of bubbling electronics, cheeky synthesizer riffs and clanking drum machine hits.

Review: And the deeply-dug RDY heritage series continues.... You'd think by release 16 ideas and content would be running thin. Gosh no. If anything this is the most extensive one yet, painting the broadest of Ron Hardy portraits. We kick off with K Alexi (another bona fide Chicago pioneer) a proper warehouse document that chops and slaps with a splice, diced sample of Hardy's "Sensation". Contrast couldn't get much higher as we move to Hardy's own edit of Greg Perry. Dreamy, delicate, full of jazz soul and largely beatless, it still smoulders with emotion almost 30 years on. Finally we hit the straight-up proto techno vibes of "Drum Track 1". A fine DJ tool or a slice of minimal 808 madness on its own; it's the very essence of Chicago's 4/4 roots and indeed Hardy's legacy.

Review: Whether you're a confirmed fan of Ron Hardy or not, the Muzic Box Classics series - which showcases cuts championed by the legendary Chicago DJ over the course of his all-too-short career - is always worth a look. This tenth volume is every bits as essential as its' predecessors, opening with the twin attractions of the Public Image Limited and the B-52s. Elsewhere, you'll find a dash of Eurhythmics, the synth-laden instrumental soul-funk hustle of "Strut", some killer disco sweetness ("Baby Don't You Know") and a trio of brilliant boogie selections. There's also another chance to savour Cultural Vibe's low-slung, proto-house classic "Ma Foom Bey", which still possesses the ability to send shivers down the spine 30 years after it was first released.

For the 43rd edition we find ourselves peeping through a very focused time window as all three tracks come from one of the smoothest transition periods funk has made; the rare groove, soul and boogie from the class of 81-83. Cappuccino's "Hell Dance With Me" slinks and shakes with an ESG style looseness and hypnosis, Man Friday & Jive Junior's "Picking Up Sounds" is a beautiful slightly sleazy synth funk jam while Kleeer keep things clam-tight with their plucked guitar, strolling bassline and dreamboat synth chords. Bliss, as always.
