Review: DDS presents Shinichi Atobe's new effort titled Love Of Plastic, featuring the enigmatic Japanese producer's distinct style of dub-infused house and deep, textured techno. Atobe explores various moods and grooves across the LP's nine tracks: from the rather upbeat groove of opener "Love Of Plastic 1" moving into more abstract waters on the knackered "Beyond The Pale" and leading up to the hypnotic back room dub of closing cut "Severina". On his sixth album for Demdike Stare's label, Atobe is in fine form once again.

Review: Since vinyl copies of Shinichi Atobe's debut album Butterfly Effect are still in demand, DDS has decided to offer-up a new clear vinyl pressing of the acclaimed set. It remains one of the mysterious, publicity-shy producer's most magnificent and fully-formed works: a singular musical vision that was released some 13 years after his then sole single, 2001's 'Ship-Scope'. Like much of Atobe's work, it offers a particularly atmospheric musical vision where ambient, off-kilter electronica, deep house and dub techno explorations come together to create one distinctive, otherworldly whole. Butterfly Effect has long been revered in certain circles and listening to this new pressing it's easy to see why.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Originally released back in 2017 on Demdike Stare's Distort Decay Sustain imprint, Shinchi Atobe's critically acclaimed opus still sounds as fresh as it did back then. We've all heard the story of how Sean Canty and Miles Whitaker tracked him down in Japan and convinced him to release some of his first music in 15 years, and it was certainly worth the wait. From the glassy-eyed and mesmerising deepness of 'Regret', to the greyscale dub techno experiments across both parts of 'First Plate' which hark back to his debut on Chain Reaction at the turn of the millennium. There are even moments of lush ambient texture as explored on tracks like 'The Test Of Machine' part 2 while 'Republic' is a more dancefloor ready cut yet, still very much loaded directly off the factory floor.

Review: ** REPRESS ** Having released just one seminal 12" on Chain Reaction back in 2001, Shinichi Atobe was tracked down by Demdike Stare only to be found with a vast vault of unreleased material. This double-pack release brings together some cherry-picked morsels from this haul, shedding fresh light on the mysterious and alluring sound of an almost forgotten Japanese producer. There are more obtuse noise and industrial moments such as "Free Access Zone 4", while other moments are full of sweet and crisp house grooves with wistful atmospherics. The diversity on offer is quite something, but whatever style is tackled, Shinichi Atobe brings a haunting quality to bear on his music.

Review: Two years on from the release of his stripped-back, minimalist debut album Butterfly Effect, Shinichi Atobe returns to Demdike Stare's DDS label with World. While its' predecessor explored stripped-back techno, ambient and experimental electronica, World is an altogether more positive and melodious affair. While there are still beat-less moments of atmospheric tension, not to mention crackly, hissing grooves that bear the stylistic hallmarks of minimal techno, these are contrasted by positive lead lines, swelling chords and sun-kissed textures. Throw in a couple of more robust, hypnotic techno tracks amongst the hazy deep house and undulating ambience, and you have a set that subtly shifts Atobe's sound whilst retaining a similar sonic ethos.

Review: Last year Demdike Stare pair Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty surprised everyone with an album from Shinichi Atobe on their DDS label, the quite brilliant Butterfly Effect, which arrived out of nowhere following a prolonged period of inactivity from the Japanese artist. In fact Atobe had just the one release, a mythical Chain Reaction 12" called Ship Scope, that was released back in 2001, causing many to speculate it was an alias of a Basic Channel artist. With original copies of Ship Scope quite pricey on Discogs, DDS have done everyone a favour by reissuing the 12" in all new label artwork. Those wishing to experience the sublime delights of 12" highlight "The Red Line" no longer have to put up with low-bitrate Youtube videos!

Review: Shinichi Atobe is new to the CR label, but of course his musical vision shares a lot with what the label is famous for. Anyway 'Ship-Scope' doesn't contain simple clones of previous CR releases, but brings in a special harmonic and nearly melodic feel which is new to the label. An initial release for a project that makes one hope for more material in the near future.
