Review: To conclude their must-have series of reissues of disco-era albums by NYC-based Ghanain Sidiku Buari, BBE Music offers up a freshly re-mastered edition of 1979's "Revolution (Live Disco Show In New York City)". Whether or not the first four tracks were genuinely recorded at a "disco show" - even BBE doesn't know for sure - they certainly sound like straight-to-tape performances that brilliantly mix and match elements of Afrobeat, Juju, disco and heavy funk. The second half of the set was definitely recorded in a studio and includes cuts either closer in style to Ghanaian popular music of the period ("Revolution") or that fuse Buaki's usual sound with different influences (see the clear reggae influences of "Together We Can Rebuild It (Ghana Motherland)" and the quirky "Merry Xmas & Happy New Year").

It is thought that disc one here is a fully live recording from 1979 complete with bells, whistles, molten Moogs, bass heavy rhythms and plenty of party starting lyrics. On the second disc are four tracks that vary in style from cosmic disco to afro and include perennial crowd-pleasers Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This has been a refreshing series and it is now completed in style.

There's much to set the pulse racing across both slabs of wax, from the squelchy, club-ready brilliance of "Music" and "Anokwar (Truth)", to the slap bass propelled flex of "Minsumobo", dub disco grooves of "Karambani" and flute-laden breeziness of "Rhythm Of Africa".

Review: Sidiku is an impressive gentleman. A Ghanaian athlete turned musician with over 16 albums to his name he shook his country's music industry up as the chairman of the Ghanaian Copyright Society and now president of the Musicians Union of Ghana and the vice president of International Federation Of Musicians. He can also lay down a mean hook; "Anokwar (Truth)" is a firing slice of late 70s synth-infused afrofunk while "Music" comes a little later in the 80s with its rapid synth boogie groove and big Fanti chants. Righteous.
