E0102 (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: NBL 010. Rel: 04 May 22
Breakbeat
  1. Armec - "Silent Cry" (4:38)
  2. Zobol - "Epoch" (7:31)
  3. Hex Editor - "Pop N Lockdown" (5:02)
  4. Not Even Noticed - "Dancing Tears" (5:40)
  5. Sound Synthesis - "Sailing To The Cosmos" (6:11)
  6. Hawaiian Surfer - "ReQuire" (5:59)
Review: Barcelona-based Nebulae label likes to take a look towards the cosmos for inspiration as they chart a course through contemporary electronica. On this latest release you can hear sounds from some of the label's inner circle, starting off with Armec's immersive breakbeat ambience on 'Silent Cry'. Zobol's 'Epoch' follows up in a crisper electro style without slouching on the atmospheric pads, while Hex Editor's 'Pop N Lockdown' has a little fun with cascading synths and jazzy chords wrapped around a sprightly breaks beat. Not Even Noticed brings delicate synthesis and punchy 808s together with a little sprinkling of acid magic for good measure, and Sound Synthesis takes things ever further spacewards on 'Sailing To The Cosmos'.

Exit Planet Earth: Krypton
  1. Egyptian Lover & Soul Clap - "Hai Karate" (dub) (6:09)
  2. Futurenauts - "We Are The Futurenauts" (4:58)
  3. Sound Synthesis - "You Are The Force" (5:34)
  4. Mick Wilson & August Artier - "Akira's Cry" (6:59)
Review: The Exit Planet Earth series continues with the first ever collaboration between two undisputed electro-funk heavyweights Egyptian Lover & Soul Clap. Egypt knows how to rock the TR 808 like no other and has been a true player on the LA electro scene since 1984. While Soul Clap have forged their unique E-Funk sound coming out of New York City as part of the Crew Love collective. The resulting track 'Hai Karate' is a slice of superbly produced classic electro designed to rattle bass bins from Miami to Mars.
Following form in classic electro directions, Futurenauts present their debut track 'We are the Futurenauts' that brings a slower based groove reminiscent of 'A Love from Outer Space' into the cosmos and delivers a powerful message to humanity. The flip sees a welcome return to 20/20 Vision from the Maltese magician Sound Synthesis who continues the vocoded vocals but adds a state-of-the-art assault on the senses with a slamming track aimed firmly at the discerning dancefloor. EPE 08 is finished off in fine style by Mick Wilson & August Artier with 'Akira's Cry', which fuses a deep house bassline and chords with tight break beat programming and powerful lead strings.

  2. Sound Synthesis - "Hertz Frequency" (5:25)
  3. Cool & Frank - "From The Marsh To The Point" (7:34)
  4. viewtiful joe - "Sugar Daddy" (5:09)
Review:
The Fukuinn label from Japan presents the excellent sounds of four underrepresented artists. On the A side is Human Drone with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet melancholia of 'Nite Runner' and Maltese producer Keith Farrugia aka Sound Synthesis with the emotive and introspective electro beats of 'Hertz Frequency'. On the flip, Cool And Frank (from Worcester, Massachusetts) who has appeared previously on imprints such as SLEEPERS, Florklan and FLAWEd, resurfaces with the bleepy, retro micro-funk of 'From The Marsh To The Point' and closing it out is Viewful Joe with the neon-lit electro bass of 'Sugar Daddy'.

Review: Keith Farrugia aka Sound Synthesis' home base of Malta may not be renowned as electro central, but the consistent stream of superlative releases he's made there under the name Sound Synthesis have certainly put him on the map. In keeping with the floor-aimed functional nature of his tracks, this eight cut selection is a double 12" rather than an album and indeed, wherever you dip into it you'll find iron-cast electro manoeuvres destined to keep feet moving. Check 'DNA Memory' for acid-inflected bounciness with swooping strings, 'Paradox' for Aphex-style moodiness, 'I Guess You Know' for stripped back 80s influences and 'Emotional Response' for wistful heartstring tugging. A valuable addition to any electro DJ's armoury, this set has the right tune for just about every moment you care to mention.

Electro
  1. Dark Objects
  2. FH Machines
  3. Perpetual Motion
  4. PSM
Review: As any dedicated electro obsessive will happily tell you, Keith Farrugia has been delivering killer cuts - most aimed squarely at peak-time dancefloors - as Sound Synthesis for well over a decade. Even so, the sleazy, energetic and acid-fired bangers he's put out on the Orbital Mechanics imprint, which he founded in 2021, have been 'next-level' good. If you have doubts about this assertion, check out Farrugia's latest EP. It begins with a chunk of grandiose, urgent, TB-303-heavy sci-fi electro (the incredible 'Dark Objects') and ends with the creepy, aggressive and frankly breath-taking 'PSM'. In between, you'll find the melancholic, bittersweet brilliance of 'FH Machines' and the starry, mid-set delight of the surprisingly uplifting 'Perpetual Motion'.

Review: Even by his own high and prolific stands, Keith Farrugia aka Sound Synthesis is having a superb year filled with many great releases. He has debut on the Electro label, served up tunes for VAs and now lands on the cult contemporary favourite Furthur Electronix with a new double pack of his exquisitely cinematic electro. He explores a wide range of moods and grooves from the slick and high speed 'Simpa Harmonies' to the most zoned out and heady 'Flowing Dreams' all with trademark analogue brilliance.

Electro
  1. Motor Space Maps (5:48)
  2. Modulation (5:51)
  3. EMC (5:47)
  4. Back In Time (6:19)
Review: The Maltese machine funk specialist himself Keith Farrugia is back once more with yet more of his impeccable electro business as Sound Synthesis. This time the prolific producer is shoring up on Burnski's Infiltrate label with four cool and deadly cuts which build on his previous drops for 20:20 Vision, Furthur Electronix, Orbital Mechanics and more besides. From the nervy sci-fi flex of 'Motor Space Maps' to the playful fun n' games of 'Back In Time', Farrugia knows exactly what he's doing within the electro blueprint, and his tracks are reliably punchy warm - a true master at work.

  1. A Night With Rutter (5:17)
  2. Elektrow (4:45)
  3. Re Wire Your Brain (5:18)
  4. Welcome To My World (5:10)
Review: Earlier this year, Maltese machine music specialist Sound Synthesis (real name Keith Farrugia) made his Electro label debut with the rather good Access On My Heart EP. Here he makes his first contribution to the Spanish imprint's ongoing Transmissions series with another quartet of quality cuts. He begins by fantasising about a studio session with B12 on the gorgeous and emotive 'A Night With Rutter', where razor-sharp acid lines, sparkling melodies and heart-aching pads ride a deep bassline and punchy electro beats, before opting for a more spacey and far-sighted sound on 'Elecktrow'. Over on the flip, 'Re-Wire Your Brain' is a more skeletal, futuristic affair that sits somewhere between Kraftwerk and Egyptian Lover, while 'Welcome To My World' is a tough but atmospheric chunk of vocoder-sporting club electro.

  4. Phazed Out (5:31)
Review: Keith Farrugia is the man known in electro circles as Sound Synthesis. He is a topicality craftsmen who deals in dreamy chords and forlorn grooves that come with careful acid details. He has a vast array of analogue hardware in his studio and here he takes part in the largest project Electro Records have ever done: 36 vinyl records produced by all of the key talents who they deem to be right at the forefront of the current electro scene. He kicks it off in class fashion with an array of tunes as good for listening to as they are dancing too, with far-sighted melodies, devastating baselines and super elegant arrangements that get you on your toes.

Review: Electro Records offer up this new Sci Fi Electro series on nice coloured vinyl. It saw the label ask each artist to craft a 15 minute track for each side of the record, so the results are as broad as they are brilliant. There are club ready electro tracks with robust drum programming, experimental compositions, sounds and atmospheres and plenty in between. Each side is split into movements but with no gaps between tracks. This editor, inspired by the legendary Trop, follows other sin the series which have taken their cues from 2001 A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, The Thing, Akira and Terminator.

Review: Wave Function is the brand new label from Maltese producer Sound Synthesis. Like many artists, he hit a fine run of form during the lockdown and has once out the other side just as on it. He's put out more than 12 releases in the last year or so and now mints his own new concern with a superb double album of timeless, spaced-out electro. This is the sort of sci-fi tackle that takes you on smooth groove cruises through the planets, with tipsy synths and heavenly pads all soothing the trip. Electro as emotive as this will always tune a place in our racks.

Minimal House/Tech House
  1. Tin Man - "I Said Acid" (7:08)
  2. Rai Scott - "I'll Meet You On The Dancefloor" (7:06)
  3. Sound Synthesis - "Necessary Order" (6:01)
  4. Roger Van Lunteren - "Le Dee Trois Trio Prends Trois" (4:18)
Review: Since launching two years ago, Bristol's We're Going Deep label has consistently delivered some of the deepest and most atmospheric club tracks around. The music they champion is, as many in the West Country would no doubt confirm, "proper deep". That's certainly the case with the tracks on the label's seventh multi-artist extravaganza. Acid Test regular Tin Man kicks things off with a touch of TB-303-doused proto-house minimalism ('I Said Acid'), before Rai Scott takes us 50 leagues below the sea on the ultra-deep, drowsy and hypnotic house cut 'I'll Meet You on the Dancefloor'. Over on side B, Sound Synthesis's 'Necessary Order' is a simply breath-taking trip into deep electro territory, while Roger Van Lunteren's EP-closing contribution is a deep (and deeply psychedelic) acid house trip.
