Techno
Hectic
Pure Potential
Review: The unstoppable production powerhouse that is Paul Woolford aka Special Request is back with another of his frankly ridiculous run of releases. Never one to just drop a single tune, this year he has several albums on the way off the back of his superb re-imagining of the KLF's cult 'What Time Is Love?' and this Portals Box Set Project is one of them. It is a multi-part collection that "uses today's modern technology to bring you the sound of tomorrow" and each limited edition 12" comes with its own custom artwork by Nic Hamilton. As you should expect, these are all utterly monstrous bangers and this first part has the high-pressure techno bounce of 'Hectic' and 'Pure Potential' to welcome you to the Portal.

Review: Mad-heads, rave veterans and lovers of having their brains rewired by previously unexplored sonic realms unite, because here comes the first of four, yes four, new albums from the fantastic freak of nature that is Special Request. His 'What Time Is Love? Sessions' arrives in several different formats this month and across six sizzling tracks that re-wire the KLF's hit of that name, he taps into everything from "ephemeral ambiance to barnstorming hardcore, pummelling house to pointillist trance" and does so with a mix of the surreal and the psychotic, the psychedelic and the downright ridiculous. It's mental, and we love it.

Review: As you know if you have followed the work of Special Request aka Paul Woolford, it often comes in huge bursts and across several releases at once. So it is that this year the one-man production machine is to drop not one but a four-album run over the next 12 months, all independently. Quite what he runs on we do not know but we need some because once again on this limited clear vinyl version of his 'What Time Is Love? Sessions' he taps into the future as he rewires the musical DNA of rave, techno, bass and jungle into tracks that make your brain fizz and your body move. Unreal work once more from this unstoppable force.

Review: You've got to love Leeds hero Paul Woolford aka Special Request. When everyone says the album format is dead he simply laughs and says 'hold my beer'. Not for the first time, he has announced that he is releasing more than one full length in one year and all in quick succession. This is a limited gatefold purple galaxy vinyl double album version of the 'What Time Is Love? Sessions' which saw him re-imagining the KLF's cult hit of that name. All his various experiments with it feature here and span brain frying cosmic techno turbulence, bowel-emptying bass mutations, warp-speed rave and plenty of hard-to-define sounds in between. All hail the Woolmeister!

Review: Ahead of the release of Special Request's frankly spellbinding new DJ Kicks mix, !K7 serve up an EP with three of the standout cuts from it. The brisling melodies and rugged electro of 'Vellichor' open up and immediately take you to the stars. Then comes a collab with fellow Leeds artists and someone Woolford has always been keen to praise, 96Back. Their 'Petrichor' - the word given to the smell after fresh rainfall - is a moody piece of ambient with flashes of synth, sweeping filters and pensive pianos, Closing out is 'Compassion,' a frazzled bit of cavernous bass with icy chords and melancholic feels.

Review: Under the Special Request alias, Paul Woolford has released some stellar music this year. Astonishingly, "Offworld" is his third album of 2019; it could well be the best, too. It explores different sonic territory too, drawing heavily on electro, futurist Detroit techno, Boards of Canada style IDM and the slick 1980s productions of Jam and Lewis. The result is a stunningly beautiful, spacey and far-sighted set that contains some of Woolford's most emotion-rich work to date - and that's saying something. It also finishes in stunning style with an impeccable remix/re-make of the Grid's "Floatation" that sounds like the best early 90s Orb remix you've never heard.

Review: As you're probably by now aware, the latest Special Request album, "Bedroom Tapes", includes some of the earliest music recorded by Paul Woolford in his Leeds home during the mid-to-late 1990s. The tracks were recovered from cassettes the producer rediscovered during a recent house move. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the deep and melodious electro brilliance of opener "Panaflex Sunrise" and the IDM-influenced ambient techno sweetness of "Thermatropic", to the fizzing, stargazing brilliance of "Entropy" and the high-octane, sub-heavy dreaminess of "Double Rainbow", which like a lot of the album draws influence from the likes of B12, Autechre and Boards of Canada. Arguably best of all, though, is the epic techno workout "Xenospin", a slowly rising chunk of rushing Yorkshire futurism.

Review: Paul Woolford has spent a good chunk of his downtime over the last year or two making Special Request tracks in his pants. So much so, in fact, that he's created enough material to fill four albums, all of which will be released this year. "Vortex" is the first and is, in Woolford's own words, high on "bangers" and low on "conceptual guff". In practice, that means lots of gut-busting low-end frequencies, trippy analogue electronics, razor-sharp rave-style riffs and bustling rhythms that variously touch on electro, early '90s progressive house, breakbeat hardcore, slamming Joey Beltram style techno (see album highlight "Fahrenheit 451") and metallic, delightfully mangled drum and bass ("Fett", whose wonky electronic undulations hark back to early Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse").

Tiresias (Anastasia Kristensen rework) (7:32)
Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.

Review: Paul Woolford returns with more cross-genre antics with a strong nod to the past, yet with a firm foot in the present on his new stomper for Houndstooth. The explosive title track will take you back to an NYC Storm Rave circa '94, full of Joey Beltram style hoovers and fierce breakbeats. Breakneck acid electro cut "Emutraxx" blows the bloody doors off, in the vein on Air Liquide or Jammin Unit. For a change of pace you can try the wonky slow burner "No Phone Calls" fuelled by a druggy 303 drawl and a lazy 4/4 beat, while Scandinavian noise terror Peder Mannerfelt works his magic as always on his jagged and angular remix of "Real": it's real brooding, you've been warned!

Review: Special Request was launched in earnest in March of last year by Woolford as a creative outlet for "vinyl only releases with no boundaries", and has drawn from a palette of booming basslines and expertly edited classic rave breaks across the four 12" releases thus far. The Hardcore EP sees him stepping up to Fabric's Houndstooth label in advance of a full album later this year, and it's just as rude as the material thus far; "Wall To Wall" sees Woolford adopting a techno framework, with evil vocal samples rattling between heavy, bouncing kicks, and "Broken Dreams" sees more rambunctious jungle, with heavily filtered breaks and clattering snare rolls tethered to a hardcore bassline. The remixes don't mess about either; Anthony Naples turns in a spectral remix of "Mindwash" that keeps the rhythmic ferocity but somehow makes it maudlin and downbeat, while Lee Gamble reworks "Capsules" in a highly experimental, tripped out end of the night style. Big recommendation on this one...

Review: Paul Woolford's Special Request guise has done to him what the Traversable Wormhole project did for Adam X; revitalisation. The fourth EP from Woolford's emerging alias and label sees the UK veteran employ dubby house chords and stony warehouse beats similar to Markus Suckut SKCT output, with scratchy Dettmann-esque percussion to make "Vapour", while the noisy synths, mechanical scorns and intricate jungle drums of "Mindwash" tear and serrate a grimy and coagulated bassline.

Deflowered (Kassem Mosse/Mix Mup remix)
Lolita (Warehouse dub)
Review: This was the killer second twelve in Paul Woolford's Special Request project, dominated by yet another collaborative slice of excellence from Leipzig duo Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup. In discussing Special Request, the freshly invigorated and newly beard rocking Woolford has explained the project has been inspired by the current crop of those that go in on Rinse FM which brought up the producer's own nostalgic visions of original pirate material. Given their standing among the Rinse acolytes such as Ben UFO and Jackmaster, commissioning KM & MM to add their own slant to Special Request seemed like an all too inspired decision. It's one that manifestly pays off tenfold, with the duo's remix of "Deflowered" a heavily smudged out slalom through recycled rhythms that could only ever come from them. On the flip, Woolford drops a Dub version of "Lolita" that only serves to ramp up the menace of those heavily phased waves of hoover bass - as a side note it sounds strangely wonderful at 33rpm!

Review: Set to be a collab for the ages, Special Request (Paul Woolford) and Novelist (Kwadwo Kankam) team up to capitalise on the cultural residues of bassline, grime and house with 'Sliver'. Pairing Novelist's unmistakable cadence and flow with classic grime square-waves and booty house-esque drums, 'Sliver' has been a highlight of both Special Request and label boss Peggy Gou's recent sets, climaxing in a tempo change designed to turn the dancefloor inside out. As potent in intimate dark rooms as it is festival main stages, you'll be hearing this one all summer and beyond.

Review: In recent interviews, Paul Woolford AKA Special Request has made it clear that he's long dreamed of being asked to contribute to K7's long-running DJ Kicks mix series. It should come as no surprise, then, that his volume in the series is little less than stunning. Constructed as a slowly unfurling, constantly evolving musical journey interspersed with ambient interludes and specially created Special Request cuts, the set sees Woolford work his way through synth-soul, 21st century boogie, electro and IDM before moving on to classic house, techno, acid house, hardcore, jungle and, in its closing moments, a stunning, spacey synth-scape he wrote in cahoots with fellow Yorkshireman 96 Back. Throughout, Woolford's focus remains on mood, melody and tone. A simply stunning mix made by a master craftsman.

Review: The last few years have really seen Paul Woolford reach the top of his game in many different ways. Be it bowel emptying rave as Special Request, festival baiting piano house tunes or chart topping pop dance crossovers under his own name, the man is proving himself to have a real golden touch. He sure does crank out all these tunes at a prolific rate, too, but you still feel he does everything with meticulous precision. This DJ Kicks is a case in point. It touches on all the many different facets of his sound from glossy and feel good house to early Chicago classics, post-rave dreamscapes to brutal jungle breaks. What a legend.
