Review: Paul Woolford's jungle techno inspired alter ego Special Request is the best thing he's done since the golden Bobby Peru days. Here we find him going all-out on the Amens and bowel-bothering subs while playfully manipulating a little snippet of Lana Del Rey. Don't be fooled by the VIP status of side B... Everything on Special Request is VIP right now. Get it while you can, this won't last for long.

Review: Paul Woolford's Special Request guise has done to him what the Traversable Wormhole project did for Adam X; revitalisation. The fourth EP from Woolford's emerging alias and label sees the UK veteran employ dubby house chords and stony warehouse beats similar to Markus Suckut SKCT output, with scratchy Dettmann-esque percussion to make "Vapour", while the noisy synths, mechanical scorns and intricate jungle drums of "Mindwash" tear and serrate a grimy and coagulated bassline.

  1. Deflowered (Kassem Mosse/Mix Mup remix)
  2. Lolita (Warehouse dub)
Review: This was the killer second twelve in Paul Woolford's Special Request project, dominated by yet another collaborative slice of excellence from Leipzig duo Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup. In discussing Special Request, the freshly invigorated and newly beard rocking Woolford has explained the project has been inspired by the current crop of those that go in on Rinse FM which brought up the producer's own nostalgic visions of original pirate material. Given their standing among the Rinse acolytes such as Ben UFO and Jackmaster, commissioning KM & MM to add their own slant to Special Request seemed like an all too inspired decision. It's one that manifestly pays off tenfold, with the duo's remix of "Deflowered" a heavily smudged out slalom through recycled rhythms that could only ever come from them. On the flip, Woolford drops a Dub version of "Lolita" that only serves to ramp up the menace of those heavily phased waves of hoover bass - as a side note it sounds strangely wonderful at 33rpm!

  4. Capsules (Lee Gamble mix)
Review: Special Request was launched in earnest in March of last year by Woolford as a creative outlet for "vinyl only releases with no boundaries", and has drawn from a palette of booming basslines and expertly edited classic rave breaks across the four 12" releases thus far. The Hardcore EP sees him stepping up to Fabric's Houndstooth label in advance of a full album later this year, and it's just as rude as the material thus far; "Wall To Wall" sees Woolford adopting a techno framework, with evil vocal samples rattling between heavy, bouncing kicks, and "Broken Dreams" sees more rambunctious jungle, with heavily filtered breaks and clattering snare rolls tethered to a hardcore bassline. The remixes don't mess about either; Anthony Naples turns in a spectral remix of "Mindwash" that keeps the rhythmic ferocity but somehow makes it maudlin and downbeat, while Lee Gamble reworks "Capsules" in a highly experimental, tripped out end of the night style. Big recommendation on this one...

Breakbeat
  1. Amnesia (6:40)
  2. Reset It (6:40)
  3. Modern Warfare (3:19)
Review: Paul Woolford's Special Request alias has proven to be his outlet for early 90's UK rave referencing nostalgia. He does it well, we must say, on this three EP series for XL. Merging the hallmarks of classic throwback sounds with the energy of modern techno much like German Rene Pavlowitz aka Shed. First track "Amnesia" sounds like a jungle track from '93/94 played on the wrong speed; using the typical Amen and Hoover sounds and slowing them down for usability by modern DJs. "Reset It" is more of the same albeit more of a nod to UK hardcore, complete but with an epic rewind to introduce a killer hands in the air piano and diva vocals. "Modern Warfare" lets a faint two step shuffle in the background give motion to a completely sick and evil sub-bass workout that's just got to be heard.

  3. Simulation (5:36)
Review: Look out! Paul Woolford is back again under his Special Request guise for some more killer UK throwback sounds. This is the second in the Modern Warfare series issued by an XL Recordings that's taken a renewed interest in the underground. The Amen breakbeat, warbling sub-bassline and rewinds of "Take Me" accompany a pounding warehouse groove that will easily appease UK nostalgics as much as it would fans of Shed or the Zenker Brothers. "Damage" is one of the most brutal steppers you'll hear all year, simply put. You'll need to measure this one by the richter scale, hear it for yourself. Finally, Woolford pays proper homage to '94 on "Simulation" in true spirit for all the proper junglists keepin' it real today.

Review: The third in the Modern Warfare series of Paul Woolford's Special Request alias for killer UK throwback sounds. The smashing Amen breakbeat and acid bassline of "Tractor Beam" is unashamedly indebted to early nineties UK hardcore, what a homage. "Elegy" slows things down on this smooth deep jam with its garage rhythm and beautiful symphonies but still features the most violently ripping sub bass line. Finally, Woolford does it again just like he did with "Simulation" on EP2, paying proper homage to '94 on "Peak Dub" whose breakbeats smash about all over the shop complete with rewinds and sirens.

  1. Track 1 (6:51)
  2. Transmission (4:27)
Review: Having paused for a breather following the release of the deliciously rugged and bass-heavy Modern Warfare album on XL Recordings, Paul Woolford once again dons the Special Request guise for further adventures in retro-futurist bass music. "Track 1" sees the Leeds producer tone down the hardcore and jungle influences of old, instead dropping a pirate radio-friendly two-step garage excursion full of thrusting, speed garage-era sub-bass wobbles, and typically soulful vocal samples. Flipside "Transmission" is an altogether more sedate, beat-less interpretation of the same track, with Woolford smothering the original's weighty, pulsing bassline in shimmering strings and ambient chords.

Review: Paul Woolford's second album under the Special Request alias is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2013's Soul Music. While that was little less than a strobe-fired romp through Woolford's early, rave-era influences, Belief System is an altogether more complex and considered affair. Stretched to 23 tracks over two action-packed discs, the album took three years to produce, contains a number of modular hardware explorations, and features elements of tracks recorded by Woolford as far back as 1993. The sheer breadth and depth of the material is, at times, staggering, as the veteran Leeds producer giddily mixes and matches elements of electro, techno, cinematic soundtracks, hardcore, acid, jungle and experimental electronica. In a word: stunning.

Review: Paul Woolford returns with more cross-genre antics with a strong nod to the past, yet with a firm foot in the present on his new stomper for Houndstooth. The explosive title track will take you back to an NYC Storm Rave circa '94, full of Joey Beltram style hoovers and fierce breakbeats. Breakneck acid electro cut "Emutraxx" blows the bloody doors off, in the vein on Air Liquide or Jammin Unit. For a change of pace you can try the wonky slow burner "No Phone Calls" fuelled by a druggy 303 drawl and a lazy 4/4 beat, while Scandinavian noise terror Peder Mannerfelt works his magic as always on his jagged and angular remix of "Real": it's real brooding, you've been warned!

Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.
