Sapphire Dubs Vol 1
Cat: BLUETRAIN 11. Rel: 20 May 20
Techno
  1. Midnight Creeper (alternate 97 mix) (8:39)
  2. Where's Burt? (extended version) (7:20)
  3. Echo Freak (No Lightweight Stuff edit) (6:22)
Review: The latest release on Steve O'Sullivan's revitalised Bluetrain label offers up a trio of cuts from the archives. All were produced during the mid-to-late '90s period when O'Sullivan first launched the label and used the now familiar alias. The A-side features a superb, dub-fired "Alternate 1997 Mix" of O'Sullivan classic "Midnight Creeper" in which deep space electronics flutter away atop crunchy machine beats and a booming, sub-heavy bassline. Over on side B O'Sullivan is in collaborative mode, first joining forces with Ben Sims on the deep, warm and hypnotic techno pulse of "Where's Burt? (Extended Version)", before hooking with Wis on the sparse, dubbed-out peak-time brilliance of "Echo Freak (No Lightweight Stuff Edit)".

Babylon Paralysis (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FPR 005. Rel: 23 Sep 19
Techno
  1. Congo Shuffle (version) (7:07)
  2. Invisible Guest (6:54)
  3. Paralyzed Dub (2:32)
Review: UK dub techno maestro Steve O'Sullivan is back with another payload of deep immersion heaters under his Bluetrain guise, this time on the Future Primitive label. There's a deadly restraint at work on "Congo Shuffle", where the elements get reduced to needlepoint precision and the low end rhythm section stalks with purpose. "Invisible Guest" takes things in an explicitly dubwise direction, channelling serious Rhythm & Sound vibes for an immaculate head-nodder, before "Paralyzed Dub" slows down further into an end of the line skank for the weary to find solace in - masterful movements in the echo chamber from start to finish.

Three Trax (12")
Cat: RSO 01. Rel: 01 Aug 21
Techno
  1. Off Message
  2. Night Nurse
  3. Porcupine Groove
Review: Throughout his lengthy career, Steve O'Sullivan has proved adept at delivering "proper techno" tracks that are a cut above those of his contemporaries. He's at it again here on a pleasingly uncomplicated and on-point three-tracker for Rawax. A-side "Off Message" sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. The sweatier and sleazier "Night Nurse" boasts fizzing, fill-happy drum machine percussion and deep space chords that recall the early years of Detroit techno, while "Porcupine Grove" is a snappy, pitched-up romp rich in crunchy TR-909 beats, faintly foreboding background chords and tight melodic loops.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's work as Bluetrain ranks amongst the finest distillations of sleek techno minimalism and spatial dubwise sonics. As part of Sushitech's 15th anniversary celebrations, they're doing us all a massive favour by revisiting their comprehensive compilation of the finest Bluetrain joints, replete with a tasty coloured vinyl pressing this time around. The tracks are beyond sublime, riding steadfast, understated grooves, which underpin beautifully sculpted, metallic chord clusters that sink in easy but run deep. If you need a dependable clutch of stellar dub-tech-house workouts to suit full-immersion DJ sets, this essential double pack will keep you trucking long into the morning.

Straight To The Source
Straight To The Source (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSAIC LTDX3. Rel: 25 Nov 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Straight To The Source (7:07)
  2. Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle) (8:44)
Review: After they last shared wax on Mosaic back in 2017, UK dub techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan and prolific minimal house rising star Frazer Campbell link up once again for the sleek and sophisticated sounds of "Straight To The Source". It's a shuffling, funky workout with understated b-lines to suck you in and subtle splashes of reverb to shape out a heady atmosphere. "Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle)" on the flip has a more bubbling, psychedelic quality to it, without losing that cool Mosaic veneer that makes these joints so workable in so many different situations.

Those were some of the tracks that shaped the house-techno sound in the early 00s and remain relevant many years later... timeless music! 15th Anniversary - Clear vinyl collectors edition.

Yossi Amoyal presents Fluere III
  1. Steve O'Sullivan - "Paracelsus"
  2. Steve O'Sullivan - "Paracelsus" (Alchemy mix)
  3. Two Lone Swordsmen - "Felt Under Pressure"
  4. Matt Chester - "Never See Us"
Review: Mixing Engineer, DJ and producer Yossi Amoyal is the man behind Sushitech Records. The label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi has compiled Fluere across four discs (plus an extended Part V - Fatum). The compilation shares some of his story through the records that inspired him and continue to do so. The tracks mark more than two decades of buying records. Starting in a time when new music had to be actively sought out and ending with the abundance of new releases available online today. Fluere marks the end of a chapter and is a very personal collection featuring forgotten tracks remastered for today next to exclusive and unreleased music. As the name Fluere would suggest, the tracks it contains are the glue that hold a set together. They are special, hypnotic, mood setters from artists who specialise in subtlety, from Two Lone Swordsmen and Baby Ford to Steve O Sullivan and Mathew Jonson. Each part of the compilation tells its own story, both through the music on offer and with an exclusive insert written by Yossi himself. The tracks themselves represent over three decades of moving dance floors. Starting with Mark Broom's Gira first released in 1995 and right up to Brawther's Serpent, produced in 2020, Fluere creates its own unique journey through this period of dance music history.
