STD Edits 1 (limited 12" + sticker)
STD
Cat: STD 002. Rel: 11 Mar 14
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Cambridge Man
  2. 30,000 Women
Review: First alluded to many moons ago, Thomas Bullock's STD label has finally surfaced in rather dashing fashion brandishing some edited material that's every bit as cheeky as the double entendre that is the name - which is named after the Rub N Tugger's Sunday T Dance by the way. Working under the Tom Of England name that will be familiar to fans of The Trilogy Tapes cassette mix series, this STD Edits Volume 1 is focused squarely on the spotters badge end of disco edits, and indeed will feel like a breath of fresh air to anyone that's felt a bit let down by the edit brigade in the past few years. Lead cut "Cambridge Man" is a excellent rework of a mid 80s curio from The Woodentops whilst Kissing The Pink are given the STD treatment on the flip. If you liked the weirder editions of the RVNG of the NRDS series this is for you!

Germans In The Jungle (limited hand-numbered & hand stamped 12" of 333 copies + insert (cannot guarantee which print you will receive))
STD
Cat: STD 005. Rel: 11 Mar 14
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Be Me
  2. Germans In The Jungle
Review: A second and no less dashing record from Thomas Bullock's long delayed STD Records surfaces and is a real mind bender! Apparently limited to just 333 copies, both "German In The Jungle" and "Be Me" will appeal to the more adventurous selectors out there, with the former production the sort of track you might find in a set from the likes of Powell, Cherrystones or Bankhead - though probably in original form given their digging pedigree! A dense collage of booming drum rhythms, harmonic breathing and treated vocals, "German In The Jungle" rarely shifts below the intense gear before ending all too abruptly. "Be Me" is no less mental, with ragged synth lines pinballing around the gaps between a rather unmixable polyrhythmic back bone.

  2. The Mammal Meets Crazy Girl (4:38)
  3. Sensitive Man (feat Bobbie, Rene Jasper Sharp & Charlie Uzzell) (6:08)
Review: Oh gosh... Rene Parez dons his Tom Of England cape for another bizarre disco crusade. We won't spoil the surprise of "Care To Destroy" but let's say it's one of the sexiest cover versions we've ever heard. Flip for "The Mammal Meets Crazy Girl", a dubby, swampy, bluesy slo-mo stew powered by slouching breaks and burpy bass flickers, and "Sensitive Man", a psychedelic garage piece recorded somewhere in a shed in the middle of Morocco. Time to lie back and think of England once again...
