Crinan - "Killimanjaro" (6:54)
U - "Smooth Lover" (5:58)
Review: These days, there are quite a few vintage Borft releases that attract big money in the second hand market. This may have been a factor in the label's decision to kick off a new "Classics" series showcasing rare and sought-after gems from the vaults. Volume one focuses on tracks released between 1996 and '98, first showcasing the Detroit techno/spacey deep house fusion of Pher's "Tja Boo" (one of the highlights of the producer's now rare-as-hen's-teeth Dans Vid Iglasjon double-pack), before switching to the slower, darker and druggier vibes of Dan Fun's "DFSS1". On the flipside, there's another chance to savour the rubbery, pitched-up New Jersey deep house grooves of Crinan's "Kilimanjaro" and U's "Smooth Lover", a classic chunk of sci-fi techno blessed with some brilliant organ solos.

The Kids Will Take Care Of Themselves
Monogamy
Shame
Pilgrimage
Review: Having first appeared on Phantasy Sound as part of BTU last year, the somewhat mysterious U makes his solo bow for Erol Alkan's label with the Heaven In A Heartfelt World EP. Previous releases from U on Man Make Music have shown the producer is capable of aligning the dancefloor and home listening worlds and that approach is one he adopts here. There are shades of Boards Of Canada or patten to crunchy IDM opener "The Kids Will Take Care Of Themselves" whilst the minimal plink of "Monogamy" feels set deep in degraded tape. The B Side is given to two exercises in rueful sonics in the shape of "Shame" and "Pilgrimage" and leaves you with a lasting feeling the rumoured major label LP deal for U will result in some interesting listening.

Deep House
Man Make Music (U edit)
Man Make Music (Trikk edit)
Man Make Music (Erosion Flow edit)
Review: With label figurehead George Fitzgerald currently in 'chart bothering' mode on a freshly inked deal with a Domino subsidiary, the Man Make Music label turn to three other talented producers on their roster for this clutch of edits that would be classed as 'under the counter' back in the day. The mysterious U is not exactly subtle in his/her viciously degraded revision of the Chicago standard "House Nation" which heads straight for the red from the off - throwing out that immediately recognisable vocal hook in a repeated fashion similar to a shuriken attack from a clan of ninjas. Trikk meanwhile delivers a chunky house refix of that Crystal Waters classic which will no doubt go down well with the Waze & Odyssey crew with an immediacy that's complemented by the more considered, beat down refix of R&B troupe Next from Danish newcomer Erosion Flow.
