Review: Par Avion collective member Agrippa returns with his first full release since last year's "Mygraine Urgraine". Once again getting playful with his titles, once again covering some vast and unforgiving terrains, each of the four cuts takes you to a different corner; "Squid Girls" is an aquatic bashy piece with its techno tendrils lashing wildly, "Dead Wait" is pure crushed stomps with a crunchy warehouse vibe while "Spice Raiders" takes us deep into techno territory; loopy, paranoid and laced with unnerving sound designs before "Scabs" brings us to a fractured close as the 'hot pick' of the EP (not sorry). Time to get Agrippa yourselves...

Review: Agrippa builds on his previous on the likes of Version and Brotherhood Sound System and takes to the runway with his brand new imprint Par Avion. Flight path set to the darkest corner of the known bass universe as the captain lays down another brutal fractured neck snapper in the form of "U C Me", label mate and compadre Henry Greenleaf flips the coin for a more intergalactic mission before Meta brings us right down to earth with the techno shatter jam "Fault Line" that feels like an appropriately venomous and paranoid update on Woolford's classic "Erotic Discourse". 2. Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
  3. LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
  4. Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

  3. Virar (feat T9 RJ) (3:22)

Review: Time for some bumpy Baile business as Parisian beatmaker Amor Satyr makes his debut on local label Promesses. Following the Baile Do Satyr series on Wajang, here he lays down two more trappy fusions with the help of MCs MC Buzzz and T9 RJ. 'Na Viela' hits instantly with its weeping synths and staccato autotuned bars of Buzzz while 'Virar' heads down a darker path with the riff buried under rasping venom bars from Rio's T9 RJ. Sharp, tense and complete with instrumentals, these translate to all corners from hip-hop to broken beat.

  3. Mala Femmina aka DJ Tess - "Ruff" (5:29)
  4. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

  3. The Sympathizer - "Bad Dope" (3:59)
  4. Farron - "Cosmic Lies" (6:53)
  5. Kreggo - "La Mia Giungla" (4:44)
Review: Time Horizon's second episode enlists another team of dancefloor snipers delivering 5 brain-dancing tunes crafted appositively for late night use. After his appearance on the first XCPT record, Andrea is back on the label with his unmistakable shuffling drums and a heavy square bassline followed by Anybody Anytime covering the uptempo-zone with a rotative junglistic tool dressed with celestial pads; closing the A side TANS reveals his new robot alias The Sympathizer providing a neurotic electro progression fully based on his modular system. Flipping the records you will find two XCPT homies bringing the audience straight into Matera landscapes: Farron gets a 909 unceasing toms orchestra surrounded by his atmospheric leads while Kreggo illustrates clearly his hypnotic mid-low vision of breakbeat locked by a mystic bass for the whole track.

  1. Week-End (5:43)
  2. 6PNHHPE (7:04)
  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

  6. Chunk (2:17)
Review: One of the earliest wave ambassadors to enjoy large label accreditation, Sami Baha delivers his first full Mu EP and doesn't disappoint: "Mavericks One" is laden with so much sub bass it's clinically obese while its topline remains slim-line and floaty. Deeper into the EP we're seduced by oriental charm throughout; "Still" and "Dough" massage the soul while "Tozko Paran" twists the senses with trippy Q&As that shouldn't work but really do. "Cataphract" plays the consummate slow-trap club bumper while "Chunk" pays homage to all the fatties out there with its restrained energy and delicate arpeggio-led dynamic. A stunning debut EP for Mu.

Cat: TRULE 011. Rel: 09 Apr 21
  1. Thirteen (5:33)
  2. Level Cowbell (4:30)
Review: Trule's 11th release is confusingly called Thirteen, and it comes from a master of laying down drum steppers, namely Bakongo, aka Roska. The UK funky pioneer has been turning them out under this name for a while now and he continues apace here with two rugged, skeletal tracks. 'Thirteen' has tough, minimal bass and the faintest trace of texture which means you will want to keep on turning it up loud. 'Level Cowbell' then gets more funky and upbeat with a playful feel, restless cowbell loops and bass that brings a certain feeling of weightlessness.

Review: Having shot into the limelight in 2012 with a 12" on Hessle Audio followed up by an outing on Liberation Technologies, Bandshell has since been on covert operations largely centred around releasing his music himself via Bandcamp. Now he's extended that practice into the B.S.Hell label, providing a physical presence to his wayward experimentation on the fringes of bass music. It's a sound that naturally aligns with the likes of Batu and Laksa, but also defiantly makes its own statement as well. With five tracks of distinctive drum science and textural voodoo to indulge in, this is a welcome return to wax for a thrilling, self-motivated producer.

  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Cat: BMRSF 007. Rel: 11 Sep 18
  1. Damn Hot (4:31)
  2. Damn Hot (Danny Scrilla remix) (4:52)
Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

Cat: BREAKA 002. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. Liquid Gold (5:03)
  2. Ease Up (5:59)
  3. Steeze Flex (4:39)
Review: Charlie Baker's second self-released EP as Breaka begins with something bold, booming and undeniably attractive: a rave-lighting number that giddily joins the dots between two-step UK garage, the rugged darkness of breakbeat garage and the piano-powered, loved-up bliss of rave era breakbeat hardcore. Throw in a spine-tingling breakdown and you have a copper-bottomed hit (as North Norfolk Digital's own Alan Partridge might say). Baker's love of life-affirming piano motifs comes to the fore once more on "Ease Up", a deeper affair rich in weighty sub-bass, snappy broken beats and dreamy chords, while "Steeze Flex" is a pleasingly jazzy number smothered in rich chords and bubbly, sun-kissed electronics.

Review: Porter v Brook was a classic welterweight boxing match up in 2014, and Porter Brook the producer brings a sound that is just as powerful and action packed as was that world title fight. This Groundwork release is the second on the label and is techno workout of the highest order. 'True Belief' is an eerie broken beat with misty sound design and grainy synths, then 'Deliverance' again locks you in a mystic world of churning synths, lo-fi textures and cavernous grooves. Closer 'Avec' is the sound of a warehouse in decay, a post-apocalyptic landscape once all human life has left and the machines are starting to take over.

  1. Rival Dealer
  2. Hiders
  3. Come Down To Us
Review: After a decidedly silent 2013 Burial is back on Hyperdub with a new single that points to pastures new for the stealthy producer. "Rival Dealer" is sure to polarize opinion as it takes a positively unexpected route into hardcore breaks, static interference, all manner of oddball speech samples, diversions and switches in dynamics, and a willfully grainy production finish that borders on punk. Depending on where you choose to dive into the ten-minute track the experience could be very different; experiencing it in full is nothing short of a rollercoaster. "Hiders" too is full of surprises, more indebted to pop balladry than anything remotely garage related, and the emotive croon and swooning piano is only magnified by a Yazoo-esque drum stomp at the midway point. "Come Down To Us" is equally heartfelt, all slow release vocals and languid chords yet constantly fractured at the edges, with yet more surprising turns of bombast waiting in the wings over thirteen minutes.

Review: Burial's first multiple-track release since "Rival Dealer" three years ago: "Young Death" takes the lead with weave of deep, scratchy and evocative human textures while soulful vocal shards yearn and flutter over soft faraway beats. "Nightmarket" takes an even more introspective meander through the shadowy unknown with fractured arpeggios, distant whispers and thick graininess that envelops almost overwhelmingly. As forward, unusual and unique as ever, Burial remains in a league of his own. Limited.

Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.

Review:
DJ Autumn's Banoffee Pies label is one of the most hyped out there. Each release sells out - usually on pre sales alone - and very much defines the sharp end of the current garage sound. Cassius Select is up now with another fusion of UK sounds from final beats to skeletal garage. 'Born To Defence' is a rhythmically prickly tune with cloning hits and bell sounds and 'Honda Civic' is all inner city menace and unsettling bass hits. 'Sicko Groove' churns up a load of different hits, clatters, smears and smudges into a real melon twister and 'Guia Circuit' brings the filth.

Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

Review: Based in Peckham, Tokyo Wax is a unified collection of creatives sharing an appreciation for a broad range of Electronic Music. Having refined their tastes and gathered experience through promotion and radio shows their focus has since shifted to releasing records and in doing so, providing a platform for auspicious piers to bloom. In the wake of the success of that inaugural record from label owners Presence and Persona they ready their carefully crafted return with the second installment coming courtesy of 20 year-old mastermind Circula backed up by Endeguena Mulu of Ethiopian Records on his first ever remix.

  4. (P) Playfulness (2:51)
  5. (L) Liberty (2:46)
  6. (E) Earnest (2:39)
Review: His first original material since last year's Tayi Bebba album and the "Tambacounda" EP, Italian fusionist Clap! Clap! gets busy on an acrostic flex. S.I.M.P.L.E but highly effective; each cut slaps (and claps) with his now-trademark African tribal recordings and loopy tech dynamics. Cuts such as "Playfulness" flicker and shimmer with an Ame-style looseness while "Ingenuousness" looks more towards Detroit with minor key synth insistency and wriggling percussion. The most stark, memorable and ultimately explosive cut, however, is "Liberty". Pumping at full speed with full focus on dense layers of percussion and drums it suddenly drops into the sweetest house lick you'll hear all season. Another standing ovation for Black Acre's happiest clapper.

Dotted EP (12")
Cat: TEMPA 107. Rel: 05 May 16
  1. Dotted (5:41)
  2. Track 2 (5:47)
  3. Dotted (Dro Carey remix) (5:44)
  4. 8th (4:32)
Review: It's an all-Australian takeover on Tempa for their 107th release, coming through in the shape of Cliques, Sydney's Hamish Dixon and George Nicholas. "Dotted", the title track, is a fistful of rolling kick drums and scattered percussion, all coated in a fine layer of minimalistic bleeping - a new and min-melting strain of UK-flavoured techno with a definite stutter; mastermind Dro Carey (TTT) remixes the track into a stompier, more cinematic bruiser with a vividly odd kind f flex in classic Carey style. "Untitled" goes for a steppers rhythm beneath solitary pads and aqueous melodies, while "8Th" ups the ante and delivers a nasty, menacing groove to get your head bouncing in pigeon-mode. Recommended!

  1. Still At Large (8:02)
  2. Sleight Of Hand (6:44)
  3. The Straight & Narrow (6:33)
Review: As 2020 draws to a close so does the Surface Tension series with a fourth instalment from Clubroot in just 12 months. These have been the first recordings from St. Alban's Clubroot in nearly a decade and they haven't disappointed. 'Still At Large' is a heavy and ominous bass roller with eerie synths and 'Sleight Of Hand' then elevates your sense with its delicate melodies and expansive atmosphere. The best of the lot might be the lurching kicks and grainy bass of 'The Straight & Narrow'. It's a cavernous place in which to get lost.

  3. Subterranean (7:06)
Review: Heart rooted on the floor, head rooted in the stars, Clubroot returns after 10 years in other creative wildernesses with three glacial broken drum gems. "Conqueror" hits with that subtle sense of triumph thanks to the rumbling sub and momentum in the chords, arpeggios and instrumentation. "Control" goes for more of a classic breaks vibe with big swaggering kicks and an icy lead that flickers like a lifeline throughout. Finally we hit "Subterranean" where strong shades of techno and dub fuse with hypnotic effect. Welcome back Clubroot.

  3. Mercy (6:59)
Review: In case the reissue of both of his old albums wasn't quite enough cosmic breakbeat soul for you lately, enigmatic post-garage shadowman Clubroot returns with another edition of his comeback series 'Surface Tension'. Once again painting from his signature atmospheric, meditative palette but using contemporary brushes, each cut rolls with that exciting uncategorizable feel which could lend itself to techno, electro or garage sets just as they could breaks or dubstep. 'Harmony' is for the jazzy heads, 'Into Exile' is for the day dreamers, 'Mercy' is for the lovebirds. Barbed bliss.

Review: Debut album time! Berlin-based CPE has a reputation for generous EPs but this body of work is a whole new brutalist level. Stirring his techno-meets-grime-meets-dubstep cauldron with a series of sharp implements, Tectonic is the perfect playground for the young fusionist's fire. From the distorted electroid energy of "For The Memory Exchange" to the pulverising drum militancy of "War On Codex" via the more restrained, dreamy "Lack Of Wrong Format" and the total glitch frenzy of "I Get It (Lost Banknote)", Cocktail Party Effect references so much of modern electronica yet sounds unlike anything else at all. Dark times call for dark music...
