Tozko Paran (3:05)
Cataphract (feat Kuedo) (2:33)
Chunk (2:17)
Review: One of the earliest wave ambassadors to enjoy large label accreditation, Sami Baha delivers his first full Mu EP and doesn't disappoint: "Mavericks One" is laden with so much sub bass it's clinically obese while its topline remains slim-line and floaty. Deeper into the EP we're seduced by oriental charm throughout; "Still" and "Dough" massage the soul while "Tozko Paran" twists the senses with trippy Q&As that shouldn't work but really do. "Cataphract" plays the consummate slow-trap club bumper while "Chunk" pays homage to all the fatties out there with its restrained energy and delicate arpeggio-led dynamic. A stunning debut EP for Mu.

Nuh Ramp (4:43)
Review: Basic Rhythm's second appearance on Planet Mu plots a path from hardcore to footwork via jungle in devastating fashion. The A side houses the kinetic "2 Da Core" with mashed up vocal samples and crunchy drums into a bass heavy bomb, followed by "Get Up" with its hazy vocal samples and fat bass which comes together into a weird and wonderful rhythm. RP Boo's remixes are rather few and far between but we're treated to one here that is icy and skeletal, with echoing hits ringing out over impossibly deep sub bass. "Nah Ramp" is a destructive final offering with off grid clatter and lurching drums keeping you in a spin.

Running Out Of Time
Review: Props to Planet Mu for making this one happen; Interplanetary Prophets sees Hieroglyphic Being and Ital combine on record for the three track Zero Hour EP. This collaboration came to fruition as part of last year's Unsound in Krakow, with festival organisers especially commissioning the performance from Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss and Ital's Daniel Martin McCormick. Despite being intended as a one off live performance, Planet Mu seemingly coaxed the pair to commit some of the material to record. The Zero Hour EP features three dense, extended pieces that were edited down from a series of studio jams that Moss and McCormick recorded earlier this year and whilst it's much closer to something you'd hear on Mathematics rather than 100% Silk, there's plenty of evidence to suggest they have used the points of overlap in their previous work as a jumping off point for fresh explorations of techno's burgeoning hinterlands. More please!

Review: Jlin's debut LP on Planet Mu last year, the aptly named Dark Energy, was a top pick from us, and it's no wonder that the label have decided to pick her up again for a follow-up EP. There is only one way to describe this album, and that is as 'tribal juke', a sound that is fast becoming trademarked by Jlin, and one that has the potential to appeal to bass heads and Chicago house heads alike. This woman's stuff is definitely an ode to the great DJ Rashad, but Jlin goes beyond the usual tricks by adding in elements of rhythmic noise, drone and London grime. "BuZilla" is particularly reminiscent of the gear championed by Plastician back in the early 2000s. A big ol' tip for this one!

Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space (Laurel Halo remix)
Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space (feat Jivraj Singh - Claude Speed Infinity Ultra rework)
Review: ** Repress Alert **Taken from the recording sessions that spawned Kuedo's critically acclaimed album Severant, "Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space" sees a track that brings together the more jagged elements of the producer's earlier Vex'd alias, along with the brittle footwork inspired and dystopian soundscapes percussion of his more recent output. Remixes are provided by Claude Speed, who provides a version that combines synths reminiscent of early Oneohtrix Point Never combined with motorik kraut rhythms, and Laurel Halo, whose delicate revision combines abrasive violins with a viscous mass of percolating synths.

Listen 2 Me
Review: Sacred Frequency sees New York based producer extraordinaire Machinedrum whet appetites ahead of his forthcoming album for Planet Mu with four tracks of dizzying rhythms and kaleidoscopic sonics. Intriguingly it is the title track alone which will feature on Room(s) - and "Sacred Frequency" is a real delight, filled with fluttering psychedelic touches and dizzying beat programming. Alongside this, "Flycatcha" splays a multitude of scratched melodic touches over a scattergun juke beat, whilst "Fantastix" is a similarly breakneck paced approach to schizophrenic UK rave replete with requisite chipmunk vox. The retooled descent through Motor City Soul that runs through "Listen 2 Me" provides a suitably captivating end to a brilliant set of tracks.

Oh
Review: Having worked away in the thriving grime scene in the UK for some time, Mr Mitch has a chance to break through to a wider audience with this release for Planet Mu, which showcases just what a diverse producer he is. "Don't Leave" is a teasing half-step pacer that sounds like it will drop at any minute, but never does, leaving the expressive synths at the forefront. "Be Somebody" lets the melodies get even more intricate and playful, while here a more rounded drum set nudges the bugging bleeps along. "Padded" is an audacious arpeggio study shot through with an R&B influence, while "Oh" drops in some helium vocal snatches over a low slung hip hop rhythm.

Review: XTEP marks the first u-Ziq material from Mike Paradinas in some six years and precedes the release of a full album later from the Planet Mu boss due out this year. Having been coaxed away from his fine curation of Planet Mu over recent years with the Heterotic project done in cahoots with wife Lara Rix-Martin, Paradinas returns to his universally recognised u-Ziq project with this five track EP which seem to present a diverse and accessible snapshot of Paradinas' production palette, veering through smudged out analogue funk, gauzy piano house, pulsing electronic disco and more rhythmically diverse material. This would seem to justify Planet Mu's claim that Paradinas has abandoned "the furrow-browed quest for cutting-edge exploration, exchanging it for an altogether more carefree fun approach".

Crash Riddim
Lily
Review: New to the Planet Mu family, London's Optimum really makes his mark on this single. Whether he's referencing the car mag, or just Homer Simpson's one-time alias, "Max Power" is a slinky, soca-rhythmed beast, with a snake-like descending riff that grows in intensity and octave-range while crisp snares punch through. "Crash Riddim" leans toward the old-school with some nicely resurrected drum sounds and a proggy motif running throughout, while "Lilly" is kept downtempo via some spacey pads and dubby bass. Forward thinking and full of surprises, this is a true gem yet again from Planet Mu.

Review: As one of the undisputed forefathers of the footwork scene, RP Boo has got plenty of archival material to dig into which is good news for all new found devotees of the sound. Planet Mu once again provides a platform to the Chicago-born style, calling upon Boo to deliver some hitherto unreleased gems which proved pivotal as juke and footwork were taking shape in the late 90s and early 00s. The tracks are primal, drum machine focused grooves with a more linear take on those hooky samples, neatly highlighting the transition from Dance Mania ghetto house and techno through to the more alien sounds of modern juke.

Review: The Mu come through with a debut proper for Silk Road Assassins. Formed of Tom E. Vercetti, Lovedr0id & Chemist, Silk Road Assassins previously featured on the exhaustive label compilation Planet Mu put out last year and contributed to the Peace Edits 12? on Gobstopper too. The Reflection Spaces 12" represents their debut release proper, and sees the trio investigate a loose narrative theme based around a "retro-futuristic/dystopian city, with development into game music in mind" across seven evocative soundscapes. If you maintain any semblance of interest in current strains of instrumental grime you should be all over this!

Review: One of the bass world's most enigmatic and interesting artists returns to Planet Mu with his fourth and arguably most beguiling album. Completely void of genre-trappings or tempo formats, each cut seems like an unbounded meander through BR's thoughts. Slow, spacious and free-spirited, as with his previous works, it's a deeply woven tapestry of references and influences that range from his formative days on pirate radio ('Harwhich Road') to his interest in literature ('Palace Of The Peacocks') to tongue-in-cheek sonic fun ('Larkin Around') Welcome to the labyrinth.

What A Mess
Deep Cut (live edit)
Review: Not content with releasing one album on Planet Mu this year, the excellent Hive Mind, Ital returns to the label with another. While Hive Mind was a patient listen, filled with deep, leftfield grooves and cosmic undertones, Dream On feels like a more urgent, fragmented affair, like listening to a half-remembered night in a club; opener "Despot" combines chopped up vocals and rattling percussion and feels like several different club tracks playing at once, while "Boi" employs hyperkinetic footwork rhythms with searing dub techno textures, and "Enrique" provides an immersive trip into distant industrial rhythms. "What A Mess" perhaps encapsulates the album best; a cluttered mass of indistinct voices, textures and loose rhythms that somehow come together to make a fantastically listenable whole. Highly recommended.

Review: Brighton-based synth-step explorer Alan Myson is nothing if not prolific; Nebula Dance is his third full-length in five years. Like previous excursions, Nebula Dance sees him attempting to join the dots between dubstep rhythms, synth-wave melodies, clattering IDM grooves and the shimmering sweeps of classic electronica. It's a sound dripping with positivity, and the result is an album that somehow manages to sound both self-consciously grandiose and impressively intimate. Tracks like "Intercruise" and "Glokk" bristle with retina-sharp melodies and glistening electronics, all atop rhythms that are seemingly pulling you in different directions. It's a delicious combination, that's for sure.

Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

Review: One of Planet Mu's most celebrated artists returns to the label with a 25 minute mini LP offering. Ital Tek, aka Brighton-based producer Alan Myson, has a long and storied production history with Planet Mu stretching across three albums and numerous 12? releases since debuting in 2007. Control arrives roughly a year after Myson released third LP Nebula Dance on the label and it's eight tracks find the producer nestled snugly in within the 160BPM crawlspace between footwork and drum & bass. As the decidedly Utopian cover art suggests, Control finds Myson operating under a strong, thick set sci-fi influence and a few listens demonstrate that Planet Mu are still pushing the eminently experimental sonic barriers in a manner that helped establish the label.

The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.

You may not be so familiar with Jlin, a footwork producer with a couple of contributions to the second Bangs & Works compilation Planet Mu released, but the Indiana based artist is quite the talent on the basis of Dark Energy. Jlin has gone on record to say this album has been in gestation from some time and explores darker themes than you would usually get on a footwork album. There's a real confidence to her productions at times on this album, "Black Diamond" in particular has a wonderful swagger to its syncopation, and in "Expand" Jlin offers an intriguing collaboration with RVNG Intl's resident voice manipulator Holly Herndon.

Review: Jamie Vex'd returns to his Kuedo project after several years working both underground and commercial sector as an engineer, sound designer and composer. His return couldn't have happened soon enough. "Slow Knife" is anchored by a strong sense of score-like sci-fi throughout as tracks such as the spectrum creeping alien trains of "Slow Knife" and the smouldering twangs and pensive vibrations of "Love Theme" create a dense, sense-blurring narrative. Elsewhere Jamie finds time to escape into raw futuristic soul ("In Your Sleep"), wry broken beat dancefloor procession ("Floating Forest") and overwhelmingly immersive sound design ("Broken Fox") This is just the tip of a sonic iceberg that will take many exciting listens to get acquainted with.

Review: Kuedo's previous album, 2011's Severant, was marked out by the producer's willingness to combine Vangelis style soundtrack synth-scapes with the body-popping beat patterns of trap and footwork. On Slow Life, he switches focus a little, emphasizing his cinematic influences - Michael Mann and Mica Levi are mentioned in the press blurb - while toning down the beats and bass. The resulting set is seductively atmospheric, with drowsy chords, bewitching electronics and ear-catching melody lines combining to create beautiful and beguiling instrumental soundscapes. There's little in the way of club-focused material, but plenty of period detail and a string of brilliantly mood-altering compositions. It could well be Kuedo's strongest set yet.

Review: After the massive impact of Vex'd in the breakthrough years of dubstep, it was big news when Jamie Teasdale chose to swerve in his own direction and emerge as Kuedo. Released in 2011, Severant was a bold statement of intent which didn't wholly shirk what had come before, but placed emphasis on the kind of romantic synthesis you'd readily associate with Vangelis and saw trap and other influences sneaking into the mix. In hindsight, Severant is typical of the times we live in, drawing on a glut of influences and presenting its own idiosyncratic vision, but above all that the emotion and intent of Teasdale's ideas make it an enduring, captivating listen.
