Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18
  1. Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

Review: Based in Peckham, Tokyo Wax is a unified collection of creatives sharing an appreciation for a broad range of Electronic Music. Having refined their tastes and gathered experience through promotion and radio shows their focus has since shifted to releasing records and in doing so, providing a platform for auspicious piers to bloom. In the wake of the success of that inaugural record from label owners Presence and Persona they ready their carefully crafted return with the second installment coming courtesy of 20 year-old mastermind Circula backed up by Endeguena Mulu of Ethiopian Records on his first ever remix.

Review: In case the reissue of both of his old albums wasn't quite enough cosmic breakbeat soul for you lately, enigmatic post-garage shadowman Clubroot returns with another edition of his comeback series 'Surface Tension'. Once again painting from his signature atmospheric, meditative palette but using contemporary brushes, each cut rolls with that exciting uncategorizable feel which could lend itself to techno, electro or garage sets just as they could breaks or dubstep. 'Harmony' is for the jazzy heads, 'Into Exile' is for the day dreamers, 'Mercy' is for the lovebirds. Barbed bliss.

Review: Debut album time! Berlin-based CPE has a reputation for generous EPs but this body of work is a whole new brutalist level. Stirring his techno-meets-grime-meets-dubstep cauldron with a series of sharp implements, Tectonic is the perfect playground for the young fusionist's fire. From the distorted electroid energy of "For The Memory Exchange" to the pulverising drum militancy of "War On Codex" via the more restrained, dreamy "Lack Of Wrong Format" and the total glitch frenzy of "I Get It (Lost Banknote)", Cocktail Party Effect references so much of modern electronica yet sounds unlike anything else at all. Dark times call for dark music...

Cat: COLDR 012. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. Lemons (4:35)
  2. Bangers (4:07)
  3. Quite (5:18)
  4. Flat Football (4:20)
Review: Charlie "Kasket" Baldwin returns to Pinch's formidable Cold Recordings stable, an imprint focused on "new movements in the ever-evolving UK hardcore continuum". For his second salvo for the label, Baldwin serves up four floor-friendly cuts, beginning with the off0kilter drum rhythms, savagely chopped hip-hop vocal samples and trippy stabs of "Lemons". Those searching for heavy sub-bass action should start with the pulverizing low end and polyrhythmic punch of "Bangers", before flipping the disc and dropping the needle on "Quite", a hot-stepping affair that draws influence from both dubstep and UK garage without particularly sounding like either. Further mind-altering insanity can be found on closer "Flat Football", a wild and entertaining mixture of scattergun drum hits and wayward electronics.

Review: Previously spotted on Nomine's Nomine Sound and Fox & Hound, Berlin's CPE gets his fractured jig on with Georgian label Transfigured Time. Weighing in at six tracks it's near-album sized, too. Highlights include the brittle neck snaps and alien charm of opener "CTRL", the grainy decays and paranoid ghetto funk of "Projects 32" and the physical rabbit punch beat blows of "This Is Science". And that's just the half of it...

  1. Largs (6:32)
  2. Trench Gun (5:37)
  3. Septieme Seur (5:19)
  4. Bloodline (6:40)
Review: Sweeping up the demolition caused by his E-Fax EP as SENATE (with fellow Melbourne beat meddler Carmel), Consulate returns to Bitterfield with four remarkable fractured departures. Techno in spirit, breaks in a physical sense, there's a persistency and urgent loopiness running throughout on each track. That stabby chant on "Largs", those "Pulse-X" style depth plunge bass tones on "Trench Gun", and the rifle-like snare roll on the much deeper, mournful and almost Orbitalesque "Septieme Seur" are all fine examples. But for the most urgent, persistent experience of the EP he's saved the darkest jam for last; "Bloodline", a gritty, stern jungle piece that opens up into an almighty breakbeat crescendo right when you least expect it. Don't be bitter, be Bitterfield.

  4. RZ Canin (4:50)
Review: Aussie dub-melder Consulate returns with another melting pot adventure that covers all corners. "In The Throne Room" sets the scene with ghettofunk claps and kicks and a crisp mystic switch on the drop before "Heraldry" switches things once again and hurls us down a deep dub rabbit hole where the bass devours you whole. Tensions raise on the flip as "Serpentrising" ups the charm to deep jungle pace before "RZ Canin" brings us back down to some form of a reality on a classic El-B-style dark garage flex. What a trip.

  1. What I Need (feat Velvit)
  2. Aversion
  3. Desolation
  4. Four Faces
Review: The second collectible EP out of three, arriving on double white 10" vinyl, and containing tracks from Jon Convex's debut album, Idoru sees another four hard hitting fusions of techno and contemporary bass music. Unlike the first EP, which was surprisingly melodic, these tracks aim squarely at the floor, with "What I Need" a heavy tom-led piece of Detroit influenced techno, and "Aversion" providing some tracky functionalism. "Desolation" and "Four Faces" meanwhile provide some bleak electro dystopianism, much indebted to his Autonomic heritage.

  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)
  4. Silene - "Jiro" (6:17)
Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Review: Take a look at the artists to grace the A-side of Decadubs 4 and you'll find a collection of names that have released some of this year's most talked about albums: Lee Gamble, Inga Copeland, The Bug and Fatima Al Qadiri. The B-side, however, hosts Hyperdub regulars like Ikonika and DVA, and the boss Kode9 of course, to more intriguing names like footworker DJ Earl and Jeremy Greenspoon & Borys who have previously released music on Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label. Dean Blunt also appears with a jazzy ambient cut, while Cooly G does the same with the sombre, vocal-driven "Mind".

  2. Tonto - "Rust" (4:31)
  3. Chekov - "Fold" (F mix) (5:51)
  4. Perfume Advert - "Mad Downer" (4:16)
Review: The Cong Burn crew are back with another of those buy-on-sight split 12"s. Once again they're focused on building up the community of artists orbiting the label, so it's great to see stellar returns from many of the names on here. Lack has a compelling take on broken beat techno to impart, all smudged out dubby atmospheres and off-centre beats. Tonto makes their debut appearance here with the stripped back echo chamber dread of "Rust", and Chekov twists things up with the angular bleeps and jagged time signature of "Fold". Perfume Advert seal the deal with "Mad Downer", an elegant shaker that juggles nagging sound design with mellow mood setters.

This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Review: Ten years on and Clubroot's second album still sounds like a universe of its own. Created during that exciting flux between dubstep blowing up and post-dubstep becoming saturated, Clubroot - very much like Burial - sculpted a genuinely unique sound. It's one that touched on all influences in the bass canon while standing entirely on its own. His second album II MM did this especially as he moved us through the intense maze from mournful ambience to deep driving emotive breaks and graveyard UKG and back again. A precursor to the wave movement that happened a few years later, whichever corner of the continuum he's exploring there's a consistent sense of sketches and loose ideas being captured just before they leave his mind. Natural, raw and forever unhurried. This has stood the test of time incredibly well.

Review: While his long long long awaited return earlier this year has been a definitive highlight and silver lining of 2020, let us not forget the benchmarks set by St Albans producer over 10 years ago. This eponymous debut LP is where it all began. His most club-focused work, evocative from the off, cuts like 'Low Pressure Zone' brought that synth-driven cinematic edge to the freshly boiled dubstep melting pot that few artists - bar the likes of Kromestar and, slightly later, Om Unit - could really nail. Highlights include the paranoid strums of 'High Strung', the trance-like clarity and barbed euphoria of 'Lucid Dream' and the minimal tension of 'Nexus'. Timeless.
