LCR 003
LCR 003 (12")
Cat: LCR 003. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Amor Satyr - "Hohohoi" (3:12)
  2. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (3:51)
  3. Mala Femmina aka DJ Tess - "Ruff" (5:29)
  4. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

Decadubs 1 EP
Cat: HDB 082. Rel: 22 May 14
  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Feel It Out EP
Cat: MANUCCI 007. Rel: 07 Jul 14
  1. Feel It Out
  2. Raptor
  3. Raptor (Will Berridge remix)
Review: In addition to his work as one half of Mista Men, London via Doncaster producer Ryan Aitchison has been making solo moves under his Mella Dee guise these past few years with appearances in all the right places (think Wolf Music, Shabby Doll and Sccucci Manucci). In fact Mella Dee's featured on two of the latter label's releases so it's little surprise to find the producer popping up on the affiliated Manucci's Mistress operation. The Feel It Out EP sits snugly between house, techno and bass music with the lead cut featuring a rather vicious sub bass line and some superb vocal edits, whilst "Raptor" opts for a moodier UKG meets snapping techno flex. Do check the smudged out bass refix from Will Berridge too.

HMZ003

Cat: HMZ 003. Rel: 22 May 17
  1. Civil Eng (6:12)
  2. Sans Corps (7:40)
  3. Sulphites (7:03)
  4. P.S.14 (5:35)
Review: Adding weight to the idea that a rising contingent of Italian producers are generating exciting fresh takes on the bass music paradigm, Meze returns to Home Made Zucchero with another four tracks of beastly sonic fusions. There's a fine balance struck between eerie sound design and brutal low end frequencies, and in the shape shifting, dynamic constructions Meze conjures up there is something genuinely original and exciting happening. At its core "Sans Corps" is a wholly danceable dubstep workout, but the dizzying layers of sonics flying around the outside make it so much more than that. With every track imparting its own distinct message, this is a record to make heads turn wherever it's played.

The General Public
The General Public (12" + sticker)
Cat: KID 004. Rel: 04 Nov 20
  1. Shegz (4:40)
  2. The General Public (5:33)
  3. Unemployed (4:54)
  4. Shottaz (6:25)
Review: London-based childsplay present the debut EP by rising Aberdeen-based producer and DJ mod-r who heads up the Meld label - a collective, club night and podcast. The General Public is a four track exploration of the emotional state of today's youth. From the Midwest ghettotech/booty bass influence merging with breaks on 'Shegz', to some proper mid '90s junglist flavour on the brooding title track - it's tough enough on the A side. Flip over and you've got the breakneck acid rave journey 'Unemployed' followed by the introspective electro vibe of 'Shottaz' closing out this promising debut effort.

Meet Tshetsha Boys
  1. Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer - "Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer Meet Tshetsha Boys"
  2. Peverelist - "Peverelist Meets Tshetsha Boys"
Review: Another edition of the Honest Jon's Shangaan Electro remix project arrives with suitably illuminating results as Villalobos & Max Loderbauer and Peverelist tackle the Tshetsha Boys. Ricky V's collaborative take on "Nwa Pfundla" with Loderbauer is as stripped back as you'd expect, though as the dubby gurgle develops familiar strains of the energising original emerge, but never quite escape the scratchy electronic fuzz. The accompanying revision from Punch Drunk boss Peverelist is even more removed from the uptempo origins, commencing in dramatic fashion with dubby industrial textures before settling into a crashing 4x4 flex poised at circa 120bpm. Gradually snippets of Tshetsha Boys melodies emerge and meld the Peverelist rhythms which gain some energising impetus when those hats lock in.

Review: Single LP Editrion: While their 50 Weapons imprint may be winding up, Modeselektor's Monkeytown imprint is still in full swing, releasing all sorts of interesting electronic music lately from producers as diverse as Robot Koch, Omar Souleyman and Howling. This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available soon as well.

  2. Bad Kingdom
  3. Versions
  4. Let In The Light
  5. Gita
  6. Clouded (interlude)
  7. Damage Done
  8. This Time
Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

  10. Pontinatx (4:55)
  11. Hope Dies Last (4:53)
Review: Russian-Austrian by roots, Scottish by upbringing, RBMA alumni and multi-instrumentalist Motsa levels up with this extraordinary debut album. An 11 track opus delivered over two heavyweight 12"s, "Perspectives" spans his full breadth from dark broken bass ("Ritual Angel") to uncut euphoria ("Hyperreality") via urgent, panic-mode breaks laced with mournful harmonies ("World War III") and all types of emotional and complex shades between. From total uplift to grave melancholy, if you've so much as sniffed at an Apparat, Trentemoller, James Zabiela or Nathan Fake record then you'll be all over this. Exceptional.
