  1. Amor Satyr - "Hohohoi" (3:12)
  2. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (3:51)
  3. Mala Femmina aka DJ Tess - "Ruff" (5:29)
  4. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

  3. Struction - "Strukture" (4:56)
Review: With this release, the Zenker Brothers' Ilian Tape label has delivered something of a curveball. It sees experimental D&B producer and all round bass head Djrum join the party, sharing space with unknown quantity Struction. Djrum begins with broken techno gem "Untitled 9", cutting up sweaty broken beats, heavy basslines and deep techno electronics. On the flip, we are treated to the sounds of Struction, combining punchy breakbeats with ambient-influenced electronics on the rolling "Don't Blame", before moving further towards beat-less, end-of-night territory with the acid-flecked trip that is "Struktur".

  2. CCL & Flora FM - "Iridescent Lake" (8:13)
  3. Papers - "Beaman" (5:43)

Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Wanawake (B-STOCK)
Cat: SWAMPX 1 (B-STOCK).
Review: ***B-STOCK: Outer sleeve torn and corner creased, but product in perfect working order***

It's easy to see why Loefah snapped up this single for Swamp 81. For starters, bass-heavy beat-maker Sumgii has already contributed a number of killer missives to the label's digital catalogue, and "Wanawake" contains one of his fattest beats to date - a sparse, warped, sub-heavy affair that sits somewhere between regular hip-hop and 21st century grime. Then there's the fine bi-lingual English/Swahili rap that sits atop it from Nah Eeto, a rising star of Kenya's blossoming underground. Her style and delivery is distinctive and on-point, working in perfect harmony with Sumgii's killer backing track. Loefah naturally supplies the obligatory remix, placing Eeto's vocal atop a crunchy bed of hip-house style James Brown breaks and stirring synthesizer chords.

  1. Pawn - "Do U"
  2. The Renegades - "The Warmup"
  3. Vorres - "One Of These Old Days"
  4. Sideswipe - "Be With U"
Review: The London-based Modern Ruin Records label arrives with a mission statement to showcase some of the most talented and innovative artists making moves on the juke and footwork scenes around the world, and the label's first EP gets things off to an incredibly strong start. Pawn kicks off with "Do U", a dancefloor destroyer melding footwork textures with punishing D&B-influenced rhythms and bass, while The Renegades' "The Warmup" offers a jazzier number which places deft amen breaks throughout. On the flip, Sideswipe's "Be With U" offers a gospel-influenced, funky take on footwork with its vintage sample, but it's Vorres' "One Of These Old Days" that takes the crown, with delicate 808 rhythms fluttering across more soulful vocals. Essential stuff from a label to watch.

  3. Steevio - "Seren" (Original mix) (6:32)
  4. Pev - "Edges" (Steevio reinterpretation) (5:37)
Review: Schmorgasbord Records continues to examine the creative results of collaborative experimentation within contemporary electronic music, following releases from Appleblim & October, Spatial & S-Max, Al Tourettes & Paradroid and Bass Clef & Frak.

Pev is one of the leading lights of the fertile Bristol music scene, responsible for the hugely influential Punch Drunk and Livity Sound labels, as well as numerous releases on Tectonic, Skull Disco, Hessle Audio and The Trilogy Tapes.

Steevio is the co-founder of Mindtours Records and the Freerotation electronic music festival. His live improvised techno performances on modular synthesisers have been witnessed in Berghain in Berlin, Concrete in Paris, Corsica Studios in London and many more besides.

The two artists created original tracks and then remixed / reinterpreted each others work resulting in truly unique tracks neither artist would have conjured up otherwise.

Review: In a fit of complex hybrid future funk, Second Storey and Appleblim consolidate their first three EPs for R&S into a long player that shows the full breadth of their sound in glorious technicolour. It's a thrilling world full of contorting shapes, glossy melodies and large doses of psychoactive fairy tale ingredients, with a gutsy techno heart pulsing away at the centre. Hearing all the tracks in one sitting gives a worthwhile context to the artists vision as they contort in and amongst each other, while new piece "Arpegmonger" opens the album in utterly glorious fashion. Craftily blending the notion of home-listening music and dancefloor madness, ALSO will have you twitching wherever it infects you.

Review: Matteo Zamagni joins the razor sharp SVBKVLT family with a chop-walloping entry EP. More album sized in weight and dynamics, this sets the parameters for the a/v artist's widest scope. Five originals, three remixes, the story rifles us through the club continuum from militant rifle kicks and warp drone halftime ("Ravevv101") to bouncy post-Orbital bubbly-but-barbed rave harmonics and timpani terror ("Submechanophobia" - with TSVI) Remixes include a 23rd century two-step rave-up from Gooooose, killer kuduro from Zaliva-D and rhythmic poison from arthropod loving label member 33EMYBW.

Review: UK bass specialist Leon Smart aka Scratcha DVA originally premiered "Air Bubble" back in 2018 under the Singlewhitefemale alias on the self-released album "Interludes" - only available digitally until now on his label Allyall Records. Named after his radio show at the time, it is a trippy, repetitive and at times contorted effort that works its magic via a simple/less is more approach. This is backed by a more upbeat and dancefloor ready take on the B side by fellow Hyperdub alumnus Ikonika (Hum + Buzz) who does a stellar job on the edit front - choice!

Review: Last year Skee Mask put the Ilian Skee Series on hold in order to release the brilliant "Compro" album on parent label Ilian Tape. Here he presents the second undeniably dancefloor-focused ISS EP of the year - a robust and forthright floor-tracker full of what the Munich-based composer calls "unstoppable fruity brain benders". It's certainly a vibrant collection of cuts capable of setting the pulse racing, with highlights including the mind-mangling analogue electro/techno/breakbeat fusion of opener "Juug", the deep two-step techno skip of "RZZ", and the IDM influenced shuffle of "Slow Music". Arguably best of all though is the teak-tough analogue electro wonkiness of "Play Ha".

  1. Kordman Return (Swing mix) (5:12)
  2. Palo Alto (5:38)
  3. Fjorward Flex Dub (4:58)
  4. Glass Museum (5:25)
Review: Munich-based mystery man, Skee Mask, remains at the top of our Ilian Tape favourites. While we love the work of brothers Dario and Marco Zenker, the two label founders, we think that this guy's sound is the creme de la creme of contemporary, dub-filtered techno. Serum and Junt were both absolute killer EPs, and the Shred album was also on our list of the best releases of 2016, so we're pretty psyched about this new single, the curiously named 2012. The opening "Kordman Return (Swing mix)" is Skee Mask up to his naughty break sampling and techno wizardry, all broken and loose, whereas "Palo Alto" sees the producer in a surprisingly sturdy, head-first mood driven by solid bursts of 4/4 and wondrous synths. Over on the B-side, "Fjorward Flex Dub" swings its mighty swarms of drums over a minimal flurry of melodies, in what feels like a sublime reinterpretation of heavy, 90s power-house; "Glass Museum" closes with a real twist thanks to an abstract, wide-eyed landscape of dissolving, jazzed-out percussion and moody ambience. Excellent material, as per usual.

  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

Review: Back in 2018 Soreab debuted on Beat Machine with a heavyweight EP that effortlessly joined the dots between grime, techno and breaks. This belated follow-up - a rare 10-inch EP containing four tracks - is similarly sizable, offering killer club cuts that pitch up grime rhythms to suit peak-time dancefloors. The absolute standout is Parallax collaboration "Wrinkles", a bustling assault on the senses in which the MC's flows rise above a wicked and wayward, sub-heavy backing track. It's accompanied by the moody roller "Watchme" as well as two flipside remixes: the melodious, hazy and otherworldly goodness that is the Basic Rhythm Remix of "Wrinkles", and a deep, chiming Benton take on "Watchme".

Review: Having previously notched-up must-check Special Request releases on one vital rave-era record label, XL, Paul Woolford has now brought the hardcore and jungle-influenced project to another imprint that defined dance music in the early '90s, Belgian stable R&S Records. As you'd expect, he's in full-on bassbin-bothering, mind-mangling mode, with title track "Spectral Frequency" - a ruffneck, early jungle style workout with added intergalactic electronics - hitting home hardest of all. There's a bizarre (but kind of brilliant) backwards version ("Inverse Frequency") included on the A-side, before Woolford showcases the more melodious, ambient techno side of his multiple musical personalities on wonderfully warm and ear-pleasing flipside cuts "Family Doggo" and "No Other Way To See It".

Review: Miguel Gil Tertre dusts off his Strand hat for some glitched-out IDM beat freakery. The title track sets the statement for the whole EP: a chaotic 8-bit brew of frenetic drums and over-layered data textures, it's instant insanity. Dig deeper for an array of weirded out compositions; the 22nd century jazz creativity of "Alvaro" and the mischievous mangled juke-meets-rave styles of "You Need A Friend" and the discordant Apparat-style stretches and bends of "Ana & I". Unique.

Review: J. Dugdale returns under his Sumgii alias for Swamp 81 again with some meditative and minimalist rollers. Judging by the pic on his Facebook page, he definitely likes the green, and the collection of tracks featured on Who Is Genre Anyway are perfect for getting blunted. It's total fire on the A side, from the deep, down and dirty grime of 'Absurd' followed by 'Chunks' and it's bouncy wall of sound. On the flip, things get more hi-fi on EP standout 'Skanker' before deconstructing nefarious techstep sounds of the late '90s on the fittingly titled 'Dark Side Burns'. The jagged and off-kilter bass experiment 'Wollop' closes it out.

Review: Whiskey Disco associate Will Buck links up with fellow Lovedancing alumni Felipe Gordon on this heart swelling and fun filled 15th EP from the label. It's a release that deals in big and loopy sounds that are designed purely for dance floor destruction. 'NY Hustlin' is the low slung opener with its rolling bass riffs and funky samples. 'Don't Wear It Out' sinks into a chugging train-track groove that gets you steaming and then 'Can't Hold Me Back' cuts loose with super funky bass riffs and big diva vocals. Last of all, Felipe Gordon ups the ante with a more slamming but just as sensuous remix of 'NY Hustlin'' that brings more heat to the floor. s.

Review: East London queer scene darlings Super Drama continue their throbbing vein of form with three funkified breakbeat jams for all shades of the night. "Excess" is the midnight bounce. Rude bass and sweaty arrangements warming up the party. "Once Is Enough" is a much sassier, slinkier affair with Kuntessa calling the shots well into the wee hours. "Faux Pas" takes us to the afterparty; bumping drums, a classic electro groove and dubby washes. Ghetto fabulous.

Review: "If you do not hear this" a distorted voice says at the start of Shed's third album, The Killer, before deploying a low bass frequency, "or that, you will not feel it". It's a statement of intent which is followed through with some of the heaviest material of the producer's career - whether it's the dense ambient of "STP3/The Killer", the tunnelling, waspish drone of "I Come By Night", or the screaming oscillations of "Day After". Despite being an album grounded by monolithic rave-era breakbeats, it's also an album of contemplative moments - the thermal current melodies of "Gas Up" and "The Praetorian" chief among them. The artwork says it all - this is an album made for the body, and our advice is to turn it up loud and let techno's greatest contemporary producer work his magic.

Review: It's been four long years since the last full-length from American electronica producer Henry "Shlohmo" Laufer, a particularly epic wait given his early productivity (he famously launched his career with three albums in two years). Dark Red is, happily, an impressive set, with 11 doses of IDM inspired goodness stretched across two slabs of heavyweight wax. There's naturally much to admire, from the evocative, lo-fi fuzziness of "Emerge From Smoke" and picturesque D33J hook-up "Apathy" (a kind of ambient jazz exploration with hints of horror), to the skittish, jungle-influenced madness of "Fading". Best of all, though, is closer "Beams", a full-throttle exercise in the power of breakcore percussion.

Review: There's plenty to get excited about on Silk Road Assassins' long-awaited debut full-length, which arrives some three years after their acclaimed debut EP, "Reflection Spaces". For starters, the trio has delivered something that neatly sidesteps convention, melding bustling, loose-limbed grime and trap rhythms with all manner of layered electronic elements. Some of these are dark and moody and others fluorescent, kaleidoscopic and tropical in tone. "State of Ruin" twists, turns and twists again on umpteen occasions, delivering a musical snapshot of our chaotic times that veers from paranoid intensity to rush-inducing bliss in what seems like the blink of an eye. OK, so we may have got a little carried away, but it's certainly a superb set that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Review: Skee Mask, who only recently was found out to be called Bryan Muller, comes through with his second LP to date, making a wonderful follow-up to 2016's Shred. Compro is, ironically, comprised of a much more explorative palette of sounds, with many corners of the album veering off into otherworldly ambient, often through a striking new-age sensibility. The most impressive element of this album is its flow and evolution across its 12 tracks, sounding a lot more like one single-minded thought rather than a collection of disparate dance-not-dance tunes. The quality of the recording is noticeable, too, with tracks like "Rev8617" or "Via Sub Mids" sounding professional, both in vision and style. Through an intricate collage of breaks, samples, polyphonies, and subtle electronic manipulations, Skee Mask has truly mastered his own art, and is giving a new direction to the wider 'UK rave' sound. BIG.

Following 2019's sludge-crawl collab with Karim Maas and the eco-hellscape new age of Boreal Massif's "We All Have An Impact," Jabs turns his attention to a new nightmare: dating.

Review: Paul Woolford has spent a good chunk of his downtime over the last year or two making Special Request tracks in his pants. So much so, in fact, that he's created enough material to fill four albums, all of which will be released this year. "Vortex" is the first and is, in Woolford's own words, high on "bangers" and low on "conceptual guff". In practice, that means lots of gut-busting low-end frequencies, trippy analogue electronics, razor-sharp rave-style riffs and bustling rhythms that variously touch on electro, early '90s progressive house, breakbeat hardcore, slamming Joey Beltram style techno (see album highlight "Fahrenheit 451") and metallic, delightfully mangled drum and bass ("Fett", whose wonky electronic undulations hark back to early Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse").

Review: Paul Woolford's second album under the Special Request alias is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2013's Soul Music. While that was little less than a strobe-fired romp through Woolford's early, rave-era influences, Belief System is an altogether more complex and considered affair. Stretched to 23 tracks over two action-packed discs, the album took three years to produce, contains a number of modular hardware explorations, and features elements of tracks recorded by Woolford as far back as 1993. The sheer breadth and depth of the material is, at times, staggering, as the veteran Leeds producer giddily mixes and matches elements of electro, techno, cinematic soundtracks, hardcore, acid, jungle and experimental electronica. In a word: stunning.
