Review: Export 02, the second installment in Finger Lickin's cutting edge mix series, sees turntable terrorist A-Skillz step to the fore with a firing fusion of funk, hip-hop and old school electro due to be unleashed in beginning of September. The Export series showcases up-front exclusives and established club killers, taken straight from their artist's record bags. Export 02, featuring bloc jams from the likes of the Jungle Brothers, Kraak & Smaak and Fort Knox 5 exhibits A-Skillz eclectic, ass-shaking precision mixing style to the maximum. From the crowd-rocking, scratch tricks of "Beats on a String" through to the sexy and supreme hip hop of "Give The Drummer Some", A-Skillz has specially selected each track, after extensive road tests, to guarantee maximum party carnage. One listen to Export 02 will leave you in no doubt that A-Skillz is a supreme manipulator of the humble record player, but this mix also highlights his prowess in the studio. The album exclusively contains his sought after and highly acclaimed remix of "Funk Hits The Fan" by label mates Plump DJs, taking the track into completely new territory, whilst his own "Mooger Fooger" and "The Funky Drummer" are early hints of things to come. A Renault advert sync and a Grand Tourismo 4 soundtrack are already in the can and an artist album full of heavyweight collaborations for Finger Lickin' is eagerly anticipated.

Review: After the well received Cult Copy album, which was released on CD/DVD earlier this year, it was decided to release a limited press of 1000 copies on vinyl, as a lot of requests were received for this format. Most of the Cult Copy related vinyl is deleted or currently out of stock, so this album makes all tracks available on vinyl again. It will be released as a gatefold 2xLP of which 500 units come with the DVD which is also available with the CD. This DVD contains a 25 minute video by video artist Michael Butink which compliments the music perfectly.

AFX has condensed the tracks onto a cohesive album called 'Chosen Lords', his first real album since 'Drukgs'.
The inimitable style of AFX is close to the album 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92' with New-York electro influences, Chicago house and Detroit techno.
A refreshing electronic-synthetic paradise.

Review: Ten specially selected little pieces of art have managed to make it onto "Transformer", all of which mastered their way round the chic obstacle course brilliantly taking purism and hit alarm in their stride. Straightness and a crazed love for detail are what make the difference on this album. Artistic breaks that entice not force the listener into a euphoric state. Sophisticated techno "Made in Frankfurt" which goes to show how exciting functionality can be. With "Transformer", Alter Ego, in their eleventh year of existence, prove that techno is not only a musical world language, but also an undecipherable secret code of timeless youth culture. Countless 12"s and remixes for various icons of pop history (e.g. Human League/Cabaret Voltaire) substantiate the great importance of Alter Ego for contemporary electronic dance music!!

Review: London jungle-punk fusionists, Asian Dub Foundation, celebrate the 25th anniversary of their critically acclaimed 1997 album 'R.A.F.I' recorded at the legendary On-U Sound Studios in East London. Entirely remixed and remastered, this version still sounds fresh, while the conscious rap, traditional Asian instrumentation, breakbeats and samples remain in full effect - and of course Master D's unforgettable rap flow. The artwork has been reworked for this new edition which also includes 3 bonus tracks: the original 7" version of 'Free Saptal Ram', a Mad Scientist dub remix of 'Naxalite' and the Jerry Dammers remix of 'Black White'.

Review: Bristol duo Boca 4 and Parker have already treated fans to this year's Ascending Change EP and now follow it up with their debut album - a beautifully constructed mixture of trip-hop breaks, stirring strings and a lot of soul. "So Long" featuring Sarah Scott on vocals is a beauty, with descending cellos and violins filtered up over the verses, while the pair's pastoral obsessions shine through on "Spring Forward", which approaches dubstep from a very unusual and highly original, string-blessed angle. With veteran UK MC Mystro on the rabble-rousing "Queen Bee", this is an unexpected peach of an album that confounds your expectations every step of the way.

Review: Brand new album from Portland, Oregon duo The Blow. The Blow have previously released three albums on the legendary K Records label but have now found a new home at esteemed German label Tomlab (The Books, Patrick Wolf, Final Fantasy etc). The Blow is Jona Bechtolt and Khaela Maricich. The two have been working together as The Blow since 2004 when they recorded a limited edition EP called 'Poor Aim'. United by a shared affection for the sparkling production styles of mainstream radio, and both raised with deep roots in the DIY scenes of the Pacific North-west, the duo makes fractured pop chart toppers to seduce all manner of hearts out of their cases, onto the floor.

Review: Buraka Som Sistema's debut album, 2008's brilliant Black Diamond, was something of a landmark set - an effortlessly energetic and breathlessly exciting introduction to the band's unique kuduro sound. This long-awaited follow-up lacks the instant impact of its predecessor, but is no less enjoyable. The pace is a touch slower (but only a touch, mind) and the sound a smidgeon smoother, but the raw kuduro energy and hooky vocals remain. There are some sweet, contemplative moments (see "Voodoo Love"), a clutch of genuine dancefloor bangers (check the warped electro cut-ups and twisted beats of "Tira O Pe"or skittering roller "Burakaton") and an admirable collaboration with German digital dancehall veteran Stereotyp.

Review: Multi instrumentalist Martin Buscaglia, a 32 years old Uruguayan singer-song-writer, presents us with his new album a capturing sound, sometimes raw and rough, sometimes dirty. He plays a Banjo recovered from the alley's dustbin, or a rajastani ravanatha that Martin is still incapable of extracting any reasonable sound out of, or electronic toy guns, or a Zamfona (a prehistoric instrument only found in Arab countries nowadays) or even a tiny Simon with his four colours and tones, there are bases created with a filthy Atari 81... all this has definitely contributed to this unique sound. An avant garde look of what the Latin American movement of singer-song-writers could be beyond their tradition but not forgetting it.

Review: The Chemical Brothers are back with their 10th studio album (mixes and soundtracks not withstanding), and they're sounding especially fired up. The widescreen stadium psychedelia they've made their own spills out in abundance across "No Geography", but it's also matched with a feverish energy. The more up-tempo tracks, like "Gravity Drops" and "Eve Of Destruction", spit and snarl with the best of their classic, down and dirty dancefloor material, but there's plenty of space for the starry eyed songwriting they've made their own in more recent times. Just cop "The Universe Sent Me" and be immediately transported to a festival field, where you'll no doubt be catching The Bro's this summer.

Review: A quarter of a century on, Chemical Brothers' second studio album returns to stores in expanded form. The original album remains the high watermark of the (now often derided) big beat movement - a bolshy, thrill-a-minute ride that races between funk-fuelled, break-heavy hits ('Block-Rockin' Beats'), rock-tinged heaviness (the title track), fuzz-fuelled post-techno hedonism ('Electrobank'), La Funk Mob-influenced trip-hop ('Piku'), heady ambience ('Loft in the K-Hole') and riffs on the Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never Knows' ('Setting Sun' with Noel Gallagher and the incredible 'My Private Psychedelic Reel'). The second disc on this bonus edition boasts a quintet of previously unreleased tracks and alternate versions, with our highlights including the opioid pulse of 'Cylinders' and the slamming techno breathlessness of 'It Doesn't Matter (alternate mix)'.

It comes at the same time as an extensive new biography that digs deep into their story and is full of blistering beats, maximal techno and brain frying electro. For The Beautiful Feeling arrives here on CD and is full of high-octane sound, maximal grooves and a mad guest spot from none other than Beck. Review: Second time around for Chris Clark's third full-length, 2006's Body Riddle, which remains one of the St Albans-born experimentalist's strongest works. This double-disc edition offers up a fully remastered version of the album on disc one, allowing us to listen in wonder once more to the set's blend of skittish, soft-focus, jazz-fired drums (a nod to Four Tet perhaps, or the then contemporaneous nu-jazz movement), lilting strings, classic IDM electronics, creepy ambient chords, trippy melodies, lo-fi sounds and nods towards the LA beat-making scene. More exciting for committed fans is the accompanying second disc, which bundles rarities and unreleased archive tracks from the period with a handful of brand-new cuts.

For the second in this series we jump from New York to Los Angeles for the 10-year anniversary of a Hollywood institution, the Monday Night Social. With 520 consecutive shows under its belt, Monday Social is the longest-running club night in Los Angeles. Just about every name in electronic music has played there at one time or another, including John Digweed, Groove Armada, Mark Farina and Sander Kleinberg, among many others. Currently located at one of Hollywood's premiere venues - Nacional - the secret of its success is its combination of the hassle-free vibe of the bar scene mixed with musical and technical standards associated with nightclubs. Each week new guest DJ's and performers drop in from around the world to join Monday Social promoters and DJ's Mick Cole and Freddy Be. On this collection, Mick and Freddy lay down a retrospective in electronic music, incorporating the many artists that have graced the stage of the Monday Social throughout its ten year history.

Death Mix 2
Review: Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay's legendary "Death Mix" is a holy grail, a high-water mark, and a crucial archive of the vibrant energy that hip-hop was infused with in the early 1980's. Here we have an incredible find, a previously unknown, unheard, alternate version of "Death Mix", aptly titled "Death Mix 2". This is similar to the original version in that Bam is pulling records from all over the map and innovatively segueing them into a somewhat cohesive, funky mix. This time choosing Fred Wesley, Rush, Cerrone, Billy Squire and Trouble Funk instead of Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra and The Jackson 5. More refined beat juggling and classic MCs showcased here, such as Spoonie G & The Soul Sonic Force. A collector's dream.

Review: The virtuosic duo Evil Nine shine on 'Fabriclive 28,' an animated, alluring mix that explores the wide range and accessibility of breakbeat. Though classified as breakbeat producers, Evil Nine display their extensive knowledge and appreciation of all music genres on 'Fabriclive 28', featuring everything from rock to electro to techno to hip hop. This dynamic mix seamlessly introduces a stellar blend of tracks, including several rare remixes from some of the biggest names on the underground, and even contains a brilliant remix of their own. Evil Nine is one of Marine Parade's brightest stars; their debut album 'You Can Be Special Too' was internationally recognized as a breakbeat masterpiece, achieving much acclaim and success from both critics and DJs alike. Evil Nine has collaborated with many remarkable artists; their colossal hit 'Crooked' featuring Def Jux's Aesop Rock was hugely popular on charts across the board.

Review: To mark the passing of three decades since they became resident DJs at weekly club night Rage, Fabio and Grooverider have put together this killer collection of tunes that not only rocked the party, but also laid the foundations for the jungle revolution that followed. It's a fine collection, with the veteran D&B duo serving up deep early progressive house (Leftfield), weighty bleep and bass (Ability II's peerless "Pressure Dub" and Juno's "Soul Thunder"), breakbeat-driven hardcore smashers (Zero B, Frankie Bones), early jungle (Wots My Code, Foul Play), slamming techno (Rhythim Is Rhythim, Cybersonik), UK acid house (Ecstasy Club) and rush-inducing rave anthems (Awesome 3, Lennie De Ice). A nostalgic trip down memory lone that boasts just as many underground selections as it does chart-bothering classics.

This is a stunning mix that sees Norman dive deep into his dusty crates and unearth some absolute gems, mixed in a way that only Norman Cook can. He goes from rhythm & blues to groovy rock, country, reggae, African rhythms, Latino vibes and psychedelic soul. On top of that Fatboy Slim has recorded his own version of Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity" which is totally exclusive to this album! Miss this Azuli release at your peril.

Review: The Future Sound Of London are well-known for their intense sectioning-off of various albums into sagas. Conceived as far back as the late 1990s, the 'Environments' album series has been routinely topped up on a slow but steady basis, and has thus far manifested as a grand total of seven psychedelectronic odysseys. 'Environments Seven', which came out earlier in 2022, is testament to the duo's madcap penchant for sagaizing; indeed, this seventh instalment in the LP is split into a trilogy, and 'Environments 7.02' is the second in said trilogy.

Review: North London duo Gorgon City have pushed the boat out on this follow-up to hit 2014 debut album, Sirens, delivering a set of radio-friendly vocal dance cuts that brilliantly blend their usual retro-futurist house and garage rhythms with thrilling pop hooks and musical flourishes variously inspired by '90s piano house, R&B, dancehall, grime and UK garage. The expansive cast list of collaborators and guest vocalists is naturally impressive, with pal Duke Dumont, grime pioneer D Double E, R&B chanteuse Kamile, Josh Barry, JP Cooper and Vaults amongst the strongest contributors. As crossover dance albums go, Escape is pretty nifty.

Review: The dynamic duo, Hexstatic, return to the fray with "When Robots Go Bad," their finest album yet. Taking their electro obsession to greater heights than ever before, "When Robots Go Bad" finds Robin Brunson and Stuart Warren-Hill mashing up sounds and influences in search of the ultimate machine groove. From first track "Red Laser Beam" they lay out their wares - crunching guitar samples, huge drum box beats and enough synths to drown a nation beneath a sea of (sine) waves. It's such a euphoric opening that it's hard to imagine how they can keep the pressure up. First single "Roll Over" quickly lays any fears to rest. Featuring new vocal find Sabirajade, this is a swinging groove of heavily-layered keyboards and soulful, sultry vocals. "Tokyo Traffic" takes the tempo up again for an acidic, glitchy, surrealist pop-locker of a tune that just about makes sense of the term "future-retro". "Freak Me" features B+, a female MC from Oz, who effortlessly rides a more minimalist, sexy, funky riff. Continuing the sexy theme, "Prom Night Party" is a complete re-work of a classic 'lost' track from Mike Ladd's "Majesticons" project. Electronic ode to love "TLC" gives the boys an opportunity to take the tempo right down, whereas "Move On" (featuring Edinburgh MC Profisee) starts to drive us forward again. B+ returns on "A Different Place", a floating electronic groove that shows she can do much more than rap. "Subway" is another tune for a new generation of breakers. From "Lab Rat" onward the vocoder takes over - "Newton's Cradle," "Newaves" and the superb "Bust" offering an object lesson in the contrasting ways in which synths and drum boxes can be used to create superb, funny, funky, driving dance music. A superb Ninja Tune release.

Review: A class act ever since their debut album Wide Angle in 1999, breakbeat band Hybrid just keep getting bigger and better. Originally comprising duo Mike Truman and Chis Healings, they've been joined by singer and guitarist Charlotte James for 2010. Their sound has been expanded too, with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra even appearing on this wonderful new album. Opener Empire sets the tone for this audacious set as a huge string-drenched intro gives way to an exhilarating stew of acid-synths and big beats. Can You Hear Me Now is just as epic, combining operatic vocals with a huge chorus from James.

Where Hybrid really stand out from the crowd is in their incredible range of styles and true to form Disappear Here will keep listeners on their toes throughout. Green Shell Suit for example starts off as a dark and moody trip-hop beat before some warped pads get filtered up and usher in a cinematic key change and a host new instruments. On a more raucous vibe, Take A Fall takes on dubstep beats but with live drums and their trademark cinematic washes of sound. City Siren is a tense, all orchestral number (similar to The Beatles' A Day In The Life) while Formula Of Fear is a rocking, electro-paced stomper with yet another perfect chorus sung by Charlotte James. It's rare to hear an album with such variety in songs, yet done with a distinctive attitude and sound. Hybrid are just a class apart and Disappear Here is deep and textured enough to withstand many many listens.

Review: The album, which is played and produced by Katerine, Gonzales (Chilly Gonzales from Canada/Kitty Yo) and Renaud Letang (Feist), "Robots After All" is a concept album with an ironic statement to the last Daft Punk album "Human After All". Its about Katerine's fight against the growing power of machines in the world. The mood is ironic, but very deep and also quite dark. It's his 7th album as he's already is a big star in France.

Review: An album of Knifehandchop's post break-up anthems take us on a sentimental journey of schizophrenic stomping electro hardcore and dancefloor death marches. 23 yr old Billy Pollard, contextualizes post-traumatic mania by kicking out the pummeling beats, extremities of high and low with songs of isolation and loss as, 'Girlfriend,' and 'We Used To Make Love' vs bouncy, bumping ragga dancehall vocal tracks, 'Outside' and 'Tizzy Tixbown.' Knifehandchop also takes the time to give big ups to the hardcore DJs and mix cassettes of his teen years with the albums vividly destructive closer 'Hardcore 94.' 'How I Left You' is without a doubt the first true Knifehandchop album. Billy wants to make it clear that this release isn't a new compilation of dancefloor singles and plunderphonic booty anthems, but his first shot at a fully immersive 'concept' album. Previous releases on Irritant and Tigerbeat6 have always raised the bar, mixing, energizing and distorting disparate genres as gabber, pop, techno, booty, ragga and ghetto-tech. 'How I Left You' is a work that reflects Knifehandchop's newest saga of bipolar drama; a frenetic new form of sonic aggression that could only come from a shot to the heart.

Review: The directness of their first all-in-German album of Konsorten TM with all of its attractive New Wave kitsch and its cautious but unmistakable hardness is simply fantastic. After 10 years of rough electronic clubmusic the Vienna quartet Konsorten TM led by songwriter Peter Zirbs not only crosses the musical frontiers between electronic clubmusic and energetic rock with their latest album "Wir Und Die Anderen" ("We & The Others"), but we also experience Zirbs' extremely personal and direct approach in which he philosophises on the finality of all things, propagates the benefits of a healthy self-image, ponders his love which melts away in the truest sense of the word, or if he will lose his girlfriend to a techno sound system. In contrast to the electronic production excesses on their previous releases "Disko 23" (Automatique/EMI 2001), the radio hit "Lang Auf" (Fabrique 2002), "Trippin" (Stereo Alpine 2004) and the compilation-album "Paradies Der Tiere" (Stereo Alpine 2005) this current longplayer is the result of intense jam sessions which were then performed directly and completely in the studio. This is thanks to a natural rawness of guitars, drums and electronics along with the fact that "Wir Und Die Anderen" was, thanks to exceptional teamwork by Peter Zirbs, Harald Salaun, Charly Grafender and Angel Rice, put together in just a few weeks. It all proves that practically anything can be carved out of stone, including a communal sense of fun which one can listen to. Yet, everything still revolves around questions: "Who will take you home? Who will lift you when you fall? Who will put down everything when you call him?" The whole album winds up on a high note with Konsorten TM's cover version of the Cars' 1980s hit "Drive".

Review: Dutch funkateers Kraak & Smaak have never quite achieved the wider acclaim their music probably deserves. While unfashionable in many regards, their records - an entertaining blend of classic funk, live disco, rubbery electrofunk and, more recently, old skool piano house - are rarely anything less than enjoyable. What's more, their live shows are superb. Perhaps Electric Hustle, their first full-length since 2008, will be their breakthrough record. In truth, it's as unashamedly joyous as any of their previous sets, and once again flutters between boogie-licious house, elastic funk, electrofunk, vocal showstoppers and even the odd bittersweet ballad. It's not clever, but Electric Hustle is certainly big.

Review: 2006 was the year Kraak & Smaak made the jump from being a cool retro-funk act pumping out some essential vinyl releases to a world beating live act with one of the funkiest debut albums in recent history. In between releasing their own records and touring the US, UK, their home country of Holland and everywhere in between, they also found time to do some serious re-rubs of friends, acquaintances and the odd superstars work. Unlike most remix albums, "The Remix Sessions" doesn't sound like a cobbled together collection, these all sound like Kraak & Smaak tracks. You can tell that the band really put a lot of themselves into each remix they do and the mixes have a common theme of uncommon funk. Funk is kind of an overused word these days but when you've got it you've got it and these boys got it big time.

Review: A lot has changed in the seven years since Meat Katie launched his Lot 49 label, but the imprint remains the finest exponent (and perhaps now, last bastion) of "tech-funk" that briefly popular head-warping fusion of breakbeat, fidget, acid and electrohouse. This non-stop Meat Katie mix, featuring various dancefloor hits from the Lot 49 back catalogue, makes a good case for the genre and its exuberant fun time ethos. Over 70 action-packed minutes, basslines wobble, synths dart, pianos surge and beats roll, beckoning you towards the dancefloor like a siren on heat. It may not be clever, but it's big and that, after all, is the essence of good dance music.

Review: You have to admire the no-nonsense, let's-have-a-rave ethos of Belgian duo Mumbai Science. This debut album - dropping on the back of four years of impressive 12" releases for Lektroluv - offers a whirlwind trip through their robust, dancefloor-friendly influences, which range from electroclash, new beat, Belgian hardcore and acid techno, to 808 electro, the Chemical Brothers, Boys Noize and straight-up electro-house. Deja Vu is arguably well named, as it does feel like a hangover from another era, when making dance albums was just a matter of whacking together a load of confirmed dancefloor bangers. That's not a criticism, though - in fact, it's rather refreshing to hear an album free of pretention. Mumbai Science want to have fun, and we're all invited along for the ride.

Review: With this album Marco Bernardi effortlessly fuses intricate, warm electronica with razor sharp electro jams and haunting alien techno workouts. The result is a collection of immaculate Detroit inspired future funk that will engage the listener from start to finish. His output as Octogen is more melodic and techno orientated than the jacking electro of the works under his own name.

Review: With volume 3 due to drop in September, what better time to take this last opportunity to grab the last few copies of volume 2. Especially at such an irresistible price! Mixed by Ollywood and Ed 209 and hosted by MC Fearless, this suburb mix follows on from the massive success of volume 1, which was Time Out's Compilation of the Year 2004, and was nominated for Album of the Year at the International Breaks Awards.
