SNKRX 05
SNKRX 05 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: SNKRX 05. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Top Buzz (5:12)
  2. Rubadub (4:57)
  3. Pocari Sweat (feat Borai) (4:55)
Review: The Sneaker Socialists bounce back with another raw-to-the-bone 'SNKRX' collection, this time from Denham Audio. A name now synonymous with high grade broken club music, this comes fresh off the back of their Lobster Theremin EP and it's every bit as bumpy; 'Top Buzz' pays homage to one of rave's original DJ/MC crews with precision health and safety snippets from the one and only MC Mad P. Deeper into the EP we chow down on the purring snares and chubby subs of 'Rubadub' before 'Pocari Sweat' slams down the broadest of breaks and slaps us silly with dubby house synths. Exceptional rave business.

Burnt EP
Burnt EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AHR 012. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Burnt
  2. Arnda E
  3. Duck Tape
  4. Empting
  5. Duck Tape (Goddard remix)
Review: Alps 2 come to Ad Hoc with a sound that will get a whole lot of listeners feeling misty eyed for good times in well-stocked festival tents. There are unmistakable whiffs of Floating Points and Four Tet in the likes of 'Burnt', which positively emit vitamin D vibes out of the speakers, so infectious is the summery mood contained within those luscious synths. 'Arnda E' has a deeper, knottier quality but it's still a resolutely sweet track, while 'Duck Tape' heads into more fractured territory with a chopped up RnB vocal that calls back to the heyday of future garage. 'Empting' completes this effervescent EP with a more abstract piece that showcases the variety at this breakthrough producer's disposal.

Earth & Heaven EP
Earth & Heaven EP (hand-stamped 12" limited to 150 copies)
Cat: TELOMERE 005. Rel: 20 Oct 20

  2. Science Of Magnets (4:57)
  3. Chroma (5:42)
  4. A Special Place (7:17)
  5. Tethys (7:00)
Review: Telomere Plastic is a new and limited edition sub label of Wex that has a firm focus on stripped back and heady minimal and tech house grooves. They're putting out a flurry of releases in a short space of time, but we're not complaining, because they're all well worth your attention. ESB is behind this one after previously should out outings on Echovolt, Leftroom and Heart To Heart. He has his sights firmly set on the future here, with 'Beyond' being a nice and slippery, synthetic and shiny mix of synths, hits and bass, and other highlights like 'Chroma' being warm, cuddly moods and grooves.

  2. Heads Up (6:30)
  3. What I Need (6:02)
  4. Turn Out (6:00)
Review: We all taking up right about now and Yosh is the one to do it. Four crucial cuts flexing around the UKG/breaks axis, all heavily entrenched in the turn of the century breakbeat, dark garage melting pot. Classic vocal samples galore and really punchy drums, highlights include the classic "What I Need" and the pure kick drum militancy of on the title track "Take Me Up". Serious vibes for all ages and all floors.

Edits (reissue)
Cat: MSR 016. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. Think (Retro Roland Riso Perfecto rework) (4:27)
  2. Get Out Of My Way (Retro Roland Riso Eterno Regroove) (3:47)
Review: Earlier in the year, Matasuna Records reissued two rare and exceedingly hard to find tracks by Peruvian band Bossa 70. They'll soon be offering up more original cuts from the band's sought-after debut album, but before then they're treating us to two dancefloor-focused re-edits of Bossa 70 classics by American DJ/producer Retro Roland Riso. On the A-side he delivers a DJ-friendly "Perfecto Edit" of Think, a horn-heavy slab of Peruvian funk rich in rubbery beats and hazy bass. Just as cheery and life affirming is his interpretation of "Get Out Of My Way". This is an altogether heavier, faster and more stomping revision, though it's the vibrancy of the psychedelic era Latin funk backing track that really sets the pulse racing.

VARIOUS

  6. Menage A Trois - "Funky 69" (3:18)
  7. Kotton The Cutie - "Baby Fathers" (3:49)
  8. Lady Shaunda - "Stuck" (3:22)
Review: 19 years ago, DJ Technics oversaw the production of Queens of Baltimore Club, a double album of weighty B-More club tracks built around female vocals and vocal samples. Originally copies are now extremely hard to find, so the newly launched Butter Notes label has decided to press up a single slab of wax featuring some of the album's most potent jams. Highlights include the cheeky B-more-does-classic-hip-house hedonism of Kotton the Cutie's 'I Just Wanna', the heat and heavy intensity of Mz Thang's 'Shake Ya Dick', the stab-sporting sweatiness of Ms Mocha's 'Not The Boss' and the heavily-edited, build-heavy hype of Lady Shanuda's 'Stuck', which packs insane levels of excitement into four action-packed minutes.

  5. Loosen The Moorings (3:29)
Review: After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

Apache (reissue)
  1. Apache (4:56)
  2. Bongo Rock (2:38)
Review: Back in 2011, Shawn Lee recorded an album in tribute to the legendary Incredible Bongo Band - whose extra-percussive cuts and cover versions played a key role in the early development of hip-hop - under the name the Incredible Tabla Band. Here, two of the more sought-after cuts from the hard-to-find set appear on seven-inch for the first time. Lee's take on "Apache", in which Indian instrumentation, Hammond organ licks and a touch of psych-rock fuzziness are thrown into the mix with incendiary results - is a guaranteed dancefloor hit. That said, his "Tabla Rock" take on "Bongo Rock" is arguably even better, and certainly a little more revolutionary in terms of the sounds you hear. It's naturally rooted in bongo and tabla-powered funk, but attractively veers off script at key moments.

  5. Sphere In Total (3:54)
Review: Last year Skee Mask put the Ilian Skee Series on hold in order to release the brilliant "Compro" album on parent label Ilian Tape. Here he presents the second undeniably dancefloor-focused ISS EP of the year - a robust and forthright floor-tracker full of what the Munich-based composer calls "unstoppable fruity brain benders". It's certainly a vibrant collection of cuts capable of setting the pulse racing, with highlights including the mind-mangling analogue electro/techno/breakbeat fusion of opener "Juug", the deep two-step techno skip of "RZZ", and the IDM influenced shuffle of "Slow Music". Arguably best of all though is the teak-tough analogue electro wonkiness of "Play Ha".

  4. A Realist's Realistic Reality (Roza Realism remix) (7:06)
Review: Having previously impressed with some deliciously wide-eyed, mind-mangling missives on Salt Mines, Planet Euphorique and Craigie Knowes, Reptant pops up on Kalahari Oyster Cult with some similarly inclining late night workouts. Check first title track "Phasic Reflex", a bustling body-pop across intergalactic electro territory that flits between string-laden dreaminess and weighty, acid-fired wonkiness, before admiring the tighter electro bounce of the Egyptian Lover-ish "MS Plenty". Over on side B it's all about "A Realist's Realistic Reality", where Reptant's foreboding, spacey and Dexter-ish original version comes accompanied by a wonderfully melodious, breakbeat-driven electronica re-make by Roza Terenzi.

Various EP (Part 2) (140 gram vinyl 12" + sticker & insert)
Cat: WSR VA2. Rel: 16 Mar 20
  1. Box 5ive - "Silicate" (6:39)
  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

  9. My Reality Cheque Bounced (feat DJ Zozi) (6:31)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Aussie Katie Campbell has delivered a string of well-regarded EPs and 12" singles steeped in retro-futurist flavours. Here she delivers here most expansive release to date, a double-pack that officially counts as the Roza Terenzi debut album. Her usual aural trademarks are all present - think deep bass, dreamy synths, fluttering electronic melodies, euphoric melodic motifs, breakbeats and bustling beats that are anything but conformist - alongside nods towards turn-of-the-90s techno, weighty electro rhythms and snappy, ghetto-house inspired workouts. It's undeniably a Roza Terenzi release, and there's enough variety - coupled with smart sequencing - to make it hang together as an album. Oh, and bass-heavy, Bleep-inspired closer "My Reality Cheque Bounced" is one of the best things Campbell has released to date.

Review: It's a common misconception that ambient can't be loud or make itself known. This couldn't be further from the truth, with some of the canon's most special moments coming when the beats drop and the overall atmosphere is a strange kind of expanded intensity - a sense of build without blatant intent or obvious destination.

The relatively short, but impeccably sweet Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine back catalogue is very much proof of this. One of a string of re-releases from the stable, here The Ambientist presents six tracks that veer from the opiate beats of '1', to the proto-jungle-tech of the deeply atmospheric '6', calling at loose Balearic rhythms, beautiful drones and crystalline acid house. Whatever you take from all that, don't forget to take it with you.

Review: Valencia's Pepe has built up quite a discography over the last few years, with this fine outing on Church following similarly impressive releases for Let's Play House, Lobster Theremin, Loose Fit and Sprung. The EP's impressive title track is available in two variations: the sparkling, breakbeat powered "Roll Mix" - think hip-house style drums, weighty dub bass and occasional dreamy chords - and a "Bleep Mix" that beefs up the sub-bass while adding some suitably sparse, computer game style electronic melodies. Another clear highlight is "You Must Not Be Me", a fine combination of rush-inducing, sunrise-ready electronics and bustling breaks, while closing cut "Recollection" is a rather lovely drift into opaque ambient territory.

  1. Hip Hop Band (feat Boo) (5:14)
  2. Hip Hop Band (instrumental) (5:15)
Review: Japanese heavyweights HHV continue their ongoing trawl through the back catalogue of long-serving hip-hop producer, DJ, record collector and self-styled King of Diggin', Muro. Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. While jazzy, the bombastic backing track - which can be heard in full on the flipside instrumental version - is forthright and club-ready, making the single a must-have for working hip-hop DJs and those who love the more up-tempo end of the rap spectrum.

Volume 3: Show Me The Funk Breaks
Volume 3: Show Me The Funk Breaks (7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: BBB 003. Rel: 18 May 20
  1. Show Me The Funk Breaks (instrumental) (3:47)
  2. Harder Breaks (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

1 Thing Breaks (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies)
Cat: BBB 002WHITE. Rel: 18 Mar 20
  1. 1 Thing Breaks (instrumental Funk Breaks version) (3:57)
  2. Gotta Work The Funk Breaks (instrumental Breaks version) (3:14)
Review: Super limited colour wax issue with a 45 on a relatively new Stateside label that does what it says on the tin. Big drum breaks that work in their own right in instrumental form for these two massive dancefloor funk breaks soul classics with the debut release for both tracks in a single 7" vinyl format (albeit here in a small run on white wax). Heavy on the drums, heavy on the brass with driving instrumentation to take your dancefloor to B-Boy moves heaven.

  1. Aciidmuzik (5:36)
  2. One Day Later (6:10)
  3. Rubber (5:44)
  4. There's Hope For You Yet (6:27)
Review: Shedbug's slow but steady rise continues via an EP that's as thrilling and action-packed as a narcotics-fuelled weekend with a platoon of free party lunatics. There's a distinctively psychedelic feel to the retro-futurist club cuts on show, with bombastic opener "Aciidmuzik" - all effervescent hardcore style breakeat, psy-trance acid lines and fizzing electronics - being quickly followed by the hallucinatory ambient techno shuffle of "One Day Later". His devotion to the more LSD-inspired aspects of early '90s electronic music continues on the flip, where the exotic vocal samples, trippy electronic motifs and glassy-eyed melodies of breakbeat shuffler "Rubber" come paired with the sunrise-friendly bliss of the EP's most loved-up track, "There's Hope For You Yet".

Review: Polish jazz re-constructors Skalpel return after a six-year hiatus with a sumptuous new album of low slung mood pieces that channel their homeland's illustrious musical history. Since they first surfaced on Ninja Tune many moons ago, the duo have mined a fertile seam of smoky, cinematic musicality that's modern in outlook even if it's classic in its sound sources. They're sounding particularly effervescent on this latest set, with tracks like "Cold Air" bursting with joy but never at the expense of that cool-headed vibe that has been their calling card for more than 15 years.
