  3. Black Rigsby (4:09)
  4. Just Negotiate (feat Simeon Jones) (3:40)
  5. Joint Seventeen (2:29)
Review: Ready for a strange soul sensation? Say hello to Henry Wu. After a smattering of outings on 22a and XVI, the Londoner jumps aboard Ho Tep with his first extensive extended document. "Don't Want The Regular" is a hazy twist on slo-mo broken beat, all dreamy and just the right amount of abstract. "Expensive Ghetto" takes the abstract even further with a jazz trumpet that wanders so free it's nearly off the page. "Black Rigsby" is more floor-focused as it looks towards the likes of Detroit with strange filtered synth wriggles and spacy overtones, "Just Negotiate" sits somewhere between Andrew Ashong and Amp Fiddler with its yearning lyrics and hugely enveloping synths and finally "Joint September" closes the show on a reflective jazzy note. Dreamy.

  6. Good Morning Pecknaam (4:10)
Review: 2015 is fast turning into Henry Wu's year. Having already delivered killer 12s of baked deep house/instrumental hip-hop fusion for Ho-Tep and Odd Socks, he now pops up on Rhythm Section International with another brilliant EP. While as deep and blazed as previous excursions, there's a sun-bright freshness to the pleasingly varied selections on offer. Contrast, for example, the deep space, boogie-house slickness of "Yellow Brick", the bruk revivalism of "Neezy (Wok)" - think I.G Culture after a few too many bongs) - and the brilliant deep house/jazz-funk fusion of "Dubplate Special". Arguably best of all, though, is the Latin jazz-goes-deep house warmth of "Croydon Depot". Everyone will have a different personal favourite, though; it's that kind of EP.

  6. Reflections (2:13)
Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

Magnolia
Magnolia (limited green vinyl 7")
Cat: MRB 7177GR. Rel: 20 Aug 20
  1. Magnolia (3:04)
  2. Lotus (3:30)
Review: Sven Wunder is a Swedish outfit who turned plenty of heads with their 2020 album Easter Flowers. World, fly, country and jazz all coloured its widescreen sounds and now Mr Bongo serve up two singles from it on a tidy and limited edition green 7". "Magnolia" is an epic prog rock track laced with a Balearic undercurrent and run through with intoxicating and world leads that take you on a real trip. "Lotus" then layers up live drums with more neat guitar playing as well s arching great riffs and Eastern melodies that intoxicate every step of the way.

Eastern Flowers (7") (1 per customer)

  1. Magnolia (3:03)
  2. Lotus (3:26)
Review: A-grade diggers, label, shop and reissuers Mr Bongo are back with another of their essential offerings, this time in the form of a 7" taken from Swedish artist Sven Wunder's debut album Do?u cicekleri on new label Piano Piano. The resulting record is a seamless fusion of bright colours and bleeding pigments, real instruments and synthetic sound that is as worldly as they come. "Magnolia" here is the intoxicating a-side with its freewheeling drums and big lead lines, while "Lotus" takes us into a more oriental sound, with gypsy funk and dark-soul stylings making it delightfully hard to pin down.

  11. Nova Fronteira - "Baila Conmigo" (AtJazz remix) (6:43)
  12. Blakai - "Afrospace" (feat Bembe Segue) (5:23)
Review: The first post-name change project for Dave Lee fka Joey Negro is a look back over his favourite West London sounds from the ZR catalogue. It's a widescreen offering that takes in plenty of the corner stones of the early broken beat and nu jazz scene. Things kick off with a Bugz in the Attic remix of 4Hero filled with lush synths and skipping kicks. Kaidi Tatham's 'Organic Juggernaut' is an even busier cut with big flute lines and Agent K appears twice, firstly with the deep grooves of 'Feed The Cat' then the mellifluous jazz-scapes of 'Hands'. It all adds up to an essential collection.

  5. Dansoman Last Stop (6:18)
Review: When the time came to record his second album for 22a, trumpeter Nick Waters gathered some of his jazz musician friends and Smokehouse studios, quickly explained the plan and then recorded the resultant improvisations. There was minimal rehearsal - just sketching out of rhythms and grooves - but the results are little less than inspired. Although avant-garde in ethos and built around improvisations, the five tracks on "Active Imagination" never lose their shape, focus or vibe. It's as if the assembled musicians were fully in-sync, with call-and-response solos and expressive instrumental motifs rising above loose-limbed drum patterns that flit between brain-scrambling intensity and hushed, late night calm.

  1. 34268 (7:59)
  2. Dear Old Thing (6:27)
  3. Brahman (10:05)
  4. Zeno (7:50)
Review: For the latest release on his 22a label, Tenderlonious has persuaded trumpeter Nick Walters to reassemble his Paradox Ensemble outfit for the first time since 2013. "Awakening" is the 13-piece collective's debut album and, like previous releases, attempts to strike a balance between tight ensemble playing and more freeform, solo-powered passages. This plan is arguably best executed on the warm, groovy and ambidextrous B-side opener "Brahman", where wild instrumental solos ride a swinging groove and rich synthesizer chords, but is also expertly explored on the Latin-tinged dancefloor jazz opener "34268". That said, the collection's slower numbers are also inspired, particularly the dreamy "Dear Old Thing".

Review: There's a growing feeling both inside and outside jazz that Kamasi Washington could well turn out to be one of the style's all-time greats. He's certainly making all the right moves, delivering thought-provoking concept albums of eyebrow-raising length that simply refuse to settle on one sound, rhythm, style or sub-genre. Heaven & Earth, his first album for almost three years, continues this trend, comprising angry instrumental answers to America's growing issues with class division and racism, Rotary Connection style workouts, Sun Ra-esque spiritual workouts, funk and soul-influenced burners, spiraling choral and orchestral affairs, and electric fusions of rubbery synth-funk and mind-altering jazz-blues. Typically, the results are never less than sublime, with Washington's virtuoso saxophone playing taking centre stage throughout.

Review: Norwegian jazz pianist and composer Bugge Wesseltoft rose to prominence in the late 1990s on the back of a string of records that joined the dots between jazz, techno and hip-hop. Since then he's collaborated with many electronic producers - Laurent Garnier and Henrik Schwarz included - so it's little surprise to see him joining forces with Scandolearic hero Prins Thomas. The eponymous set was recorded at Oslo's legendary Rainbow Studio, where the pair improvised for a couple of days before editing down the results. There's much to admire, from the spaced-out brushed percussion and sorrowful piano of "Sin Tempo", liquid ambient vibes of "Norte Do Brasil" and wonky kraut-jazz bubbler "Bar Asfalt", to the slowly building brilliance of 16-minute opener "Furuberget". File under "ambient jazz".

Review: Chip Wickham, who usually goes by the first name of Roger, returns to Madrid's excellent Lovemonk label with a mini LP to inaugurare the start of summer, which means a start to some pretty killer shades of balearica! In fairness, however, this album and the man's sound are much more in line with the jazzy end of the spectrum, breaking beats and forming new, forward-thinking arrangements. For instance, the opening "Shamal Wind" is a wonderful excursion into dreamier realms of the flute, while "Snake Eyes" picks up the tempo and makes way for an album thy can be plaid on your headphones, out on the car speakers, and most certainly in the dance! A wonderfully composed piece of music from a rising talent of true broken beat.

Review: Given that keyboardist and producer Kamaal Williams' 2018 debut album "The Return" was such a rip-roaring success critically and commercially, hopes are naturally sky-high for this delayed sequel. Happily, we can confirm that Williams has arguably excelled himself on "Wu Hen", once again blurring the boundaries between jazz-funk, seductive downtempo grooves, hazy space jazz, deep house influenced dancefloor workouts (see "Mr Wu", whose title references his other artistic alias, Henry Wu) and soft-focus soul - all with the assistance of an expanded line-up of guest musicians and vocalists. Perhaps the biggest impact is made by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, a composer whose string arrangements add an ear-catching new dimension to Williams work. Stunning stuff all told.

Review: Whether operating under his own name or the equally familiar Henry Wu alias, Kamaal Williams' next-level musical fusions are always rooted in soul and jazz. Both inspirations come to the fore on his superb contribution to the long running "DJ-Kicks" series, a smooth, atmospheric and ear-catching set that crams 29 scintillating cuts in 80 action-packed minutes. Sprinting between 21st century R&B, jazz-funk, deep house, dancefloor jazz, broken beat, kwaito, dub, drum and bass and off-kilter, impossible to pigeonhole cuts, the musician, producer and DJ manages to both educate and entertain in equal measure. Along the way you'll find plenty of exclusives, including a number of his own previously unreleased productions.

On debut album "A Western Circular", he goes one step further, delivering a set four years in the making that's undoubtedly his most ambitious and impressive work yet. Mixing and matching elements of jazz, neo-classical, softly-spun pop, folk, hip-hop (MF Doom makes a surprise appearance), Jon Hassell style 'fourth world' fusion, slow burn soul and opaque electronica, Archer offers up a collection of songs and instrumentals united by a shared sense of late night atmosphere and intricate musical detail. It's a staggeringly good set that should be at the top of your shopping list.

Review: After a trio of spectacular releases from Vibration Black Finger, the Enid label rolls out another new artist, Woven Entity. Much like the vibe of the previous records, there is a clear jazz sensibility running through this magnificent debut LP, often straying off into wonderfully obscure territories that recall the rainforest. For instance, the opening jingles of "Om" are an instant plunge into the darkest depths of the jungle, while others like "Cry Wolf" do so without any of the gimmicks, preferring instead to land a feeling of mystery via the medium of percussion - which there is plenty of on here! There are, of course, more melodic moments where traditional jazz frameworks are used, such as "Seven Vibes To Add" or the loose, free-spirited mood of "Opium", but the majority of this fine album is awash with improvisation and electronic tweaking. That is, obviously, something we absolutely love. Don't let this go by the wayside, it really is a fantastic piece of sound design.
