Review: New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah returns with his first album in almost two years, an essential set of spiritually conscious Afro-jazz that wraps his bold, mesmerizing and memorable trumpet solos around a variety of skittish tribal rhythms, Mariachi style horn riffs, soulful vocal arrangements and 21st century jazz instrumentation. It's a unique and thoroughly absorbing signature sound, with the assembled guests - most notably Saul Williams, Elena Pinderhughes and Logan Richardson - adding much to Scott aTunde Adjuah's intoxicating sound soup. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the slow burn soundscape of "Diviner (Devan)" and wonderfully percussive "Ritual (Rise Of Chief Adjuah)", to the intergalactic drowsiness of "Prophecy" and breezy "Double Consciousness".

Review: For a brief period in the early 1980s, Colored Music - the duo of Atsuo Fujimoto and Ichiko Hashimoto - burned brightly. They released one critically acclaimed album on Japanese avant-pop label Better Days before vanishing into obscurity. Individual Beauty draws together previously unheard of alternate versions of the duo's eponymous 1981 EP, unreleased tracks and a handful of archival solo productions. It's an eclectic and hugely enjoyable affair, with the Japanese duo flitting between experimental ambient soundscapes, heavy no-wave proto-techno ("Heartbeat (Unreleased Version)"), mutant funk ("We Are Only Dancing"), head-in-the-clouds hypnotism ("Ambient Discotheque") and more raucous, post-punk disco insanity (the decidedly crunchy "De To Ri Mi").

Review: Some three years after he emerged in the misty heights (or depths) of Witch House's short lived notoriety, the amusingly spectral named oOoOO delivers his debut album Without Your Love. Evidently no longer aligned with the Tri Angle aesthetic, this eleven track set comes via the Nihgt Feelings label the San Franciscan producer runs with a "couple of local gravediggers" and expands on the approach shown on his two EPs for Robin Carolan's label. No longer called Witch House, oOoOO is now embraced as the point where post modern R&B song writing meets queasy, spacious musical arrangements, so expect auto tuned vocals floating over ethereal ivory blessed soundscapes and crust laden MPC beats. The stuttering detuned Atlanta hip hop of "The South" and the suite of Burial-esque cuts that follow are standout tracks.

Review: Paradise Cinema is a new project from Poritco Quartet and Szun Waves multi-instrumentalist Jack Wylie, who last year travelled to Senegal in order to record with mbalax percussionists Khadim Mbaye (saba drums) and Tons Sambe (tama drums). The trio's self-titled debut album explores what Wylie calls 'impressionistic' and 'dream-like' fusions of gaseous, constantly-shifting ambient electronics, gentle new age synthesizer melodies, cinematic string movements, lone jazz solos and mbalax percussion, the latter occasionally smothered in reverb or delay to give it a strangely otherworldly quality. It's kind of an update on Jon Hassell's trademark "fourth world" sound, and it works remarkably well. Or, to put it more simply, Paradise Cinema is a magical and beguiling album that's well worth your attention.

Review: Kamaal Williams has described The Return, his now reissued debut solo album, as "a natural evolution from the Yussef Kamaal project". Yet while that was made in collaboration with drummer Yussef Kamaal and played around with jazz in its myriad forms, The Return sees the man sometimes known as Henry Wu stamp his own mark on proceedings. So while "visionary jazz" (as the press release puts it) is his aim, this manifests itself in a range of ways. Contrast, for example, the leisurely jazz-funk flex and stoned feel of opener "Salaam" with the more groove-driven, dancefloor vibes of "High Roller", where sinewy strings tumble down over hip-hop influenced live house beats, meandering Herbie Hancock style synths and a superb bassline.
