Escape From The Arkana Galaxy (gatefold double 12")

  2. The Arkana Galaxy (Beatless) (16:55)
  3. Escape From Arkana (13:22)
  4. Criogenesys (7:46)
Review: Italian ensemble 291out are known for many things, though it's their love of dadaist ideas and mind-bending jazz-funk fusion that linger in the memory. They rather enjoy collaborating with others, too. Having previously released a hook-up with Bop on Early Sounds, they've now joined forces with Ivan "Flyme" Cibien as 291outer space. The result is a deliciously out-there and intergalactic set of sparkling, synth-laden epics that variously draw inspiration from Italian futurism, jazz-funk, classic sci-fi, organic house, ambient jazz soundscapes and cosmic disco. To enhance the EP's star gazing credentials, closing cut "Criogenesys" features a spoken word vocal that tells the (imagined) tale of a particularly memorable voyage into deep space.

  1. Jesuino Galo Doido (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
  2. Make It Reggae (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
Review: Earlier in the month, Parisian producer Afshin joined forces with Kiss My Black Jazz and served up a brilliant, two-track missive of jazz-funk and blues-house reworks on G.A.M.M. Here they reunite for round two. This time round, they begin by reworking a shuffling, chant-along Afro-Brazilian gem of unknown origin, extending the carnival-ready percussive intro before unleashing the shuffling, sun-kissed samba rhythm and some of the sweetest vocals this side of a sing-along in a chocolate factory. Over on side B they give a similar tune to a killer chunk of reggae-funk fusion rich in warm dub bass, bongo-laden beats, bluesy guitar solos, fuzzy horns and James Brown style guttural vocals.

  1. Love Saves The Day (6:36)
  2. Love Saves The Day (Rahaan remix) (8:00)
  3. Love Saves The Day (Percussion Jam) (5:33)
Review: Casbah strikes again with a powerful homage to the NYC foundations with this juicy, insatiably funky piece of disco soul. Driven by a belting vocal from Angela Goode, there's a strong sense of timelessness, honesty and raw funk that smacks with authenticity and one of the funkiest slap-bass breakdowns you'll hear all year. Chicago's Rahaan takes the remix duties with a pumping contemporary disco cut while Casbah strips things back himself for the essential DJ tool that is the percussion edit. Feel the love.

Review: UK legend Dego and killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham have been in a rich vein of form of late, dropping brilliant EPs on Eglo, Sound Signature and Rush Hour (the latter under their 2000Black alias). Here, they return to Eglo with four more slices of warm, rich, soul-flecked fluidity. As with previous outings, much of the material has a laidback jazz-funk feel, particularly "Orbiting Uhara" and the delicious "The Vault Descends" (think bustling bruk rhythms and darting boogie synths). They also offer up some tougher, synth-laden bruk-funk in the shape of "Man Made", while "Black Is Key" sees them unfurl a head-nodding vocal roller.

22a
Cat: 22A 024. Rel: 19 Nov 18
  1. Kraksa (13:11)
  2. Svantetic (10:45)
Review: Those who pay attention to these things know that Poland's EABS (short for Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions) are one of the hottest jazz combos in the world right now - an accolade earned not only via their incredible playing, but also their willingness to fuse elements of classic Polish and American jazz with hip-hop, soul and funk influences. Here, the fast-rising septet joins forces with 22a regular Tenderlonious (who provides flute and soprano sax solos) for two epic workouts. A-side "Kraksa" is something of an epic; an ever-changing 13-minute jazz journey that brilliantly switches from floor-rocking goodness to horizontal bliss midway through. "Svantetic", meanwhile, wraps fuzzy rock guitars and hammered-out piano riffs around a sweaty groove that just grows in intensity throughout.

  4. Why They Got The Light? (4:20)
Review: Sometime Church and Far Out Recordings artist Ben Hauke is the latest bright young thing to join West London's revitalized Cooperation Recordings label, which recently returned to action after laying dormant for over a decade. Hauke's first EP for the legendary broken beat crew sounds like something they themselves would have made back in the early to mid '90s. Lead cut "Simple", for example, is a beautifully jazzy and laidback chunk of soulful broken beat that sounds little less than an unreleased Bugz In The Attic heater. Hauke moves closer to the jazz-funk inspired work of Kaidi Tatham - especially his Afronaught project - on "Movin' Broke", before wrapping angular electric piano stabs around bruk-up beats and bass on killer closing cut "Why They Got The Light".

Cat: TRU 7362. Rel: 16 Jan 19
  1. I Predict A Riot (3:43)
  2. I Predict A Riot (instrumental) (3:42)
Review: Rob Luis clearly enjoys an unlikely but inspired cover version; over the years, his Tru Thoughts imprint has served up surprisingly good funk, jazz, reggae and brass band covers of everything from Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" and Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing", to Max Sedgley's "Happy" and the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Luis snapped up this vibrant South American cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' "I Predict A Riot" by Brazilian MPB revivalists Carolina Lins and Os Plantos. It's truly brilliant, with Lins' bold Portuguese vocal simply soaring over the band's samba-soul groove and fuzzy horn lines. As cover versions go, it's a bit of a doozy.

  1. Love Is War For Miles (8:46)
  2. 7 Bar Thing (9:52)
Review: Back in 2016, percussionist Myele Manzanza impressed with a killer live album - recorded at famed Los Angeles jazz spot Blue Whale - on DJ Gilla's First Word Records. Almost three years on he returns to the spotlight via a surprise release on Theo Parrish's lauded Sound Signature imprint. Like its predecessor, it sounds like both tracks on "Love Is War For Miles" were recorded live. The A-side title track sets the tone, with pulsing, increasingly intense drums and piano working their magic around an unrelenting, two-note bassline. Flipside "7 Bar Thing" is a little more relaxed in feel, but no less percussive, as Manzanza showcases his drumming versatility on a cut rich in funk-fuelled double bass and swelling, decidedly intergalactic synths.

Mutual Attraction (limited 7")
Cat: DR 4514. Rel: 10 Jan 19
  1. Mutual Attaction (3:50)
  2. Messages From The Stars (4:47)
Review: Here's a rare treat, as Canadian producer, self-proclaimed polymath and underground neo-soul chanteuse Maylee Todd inaugurates her band "Pegwee Power" (named, it seems, after a track on her 2010 set "Choose Your Own Adventure") in order to lay down two synth-heavy chunks of 1980s boogie-soul. Smooth A-side "Mutual Attraction" is particularly impressive, sounding like the kind of slick, synth-laden chunk of sensual '80s soul that would once have been a staple of late night AM radio. It's stylistically spot on, of course, though it's the song itself and Todd's sensitive vocal that stand out. Over on side B she successfully turns in a sympathetic and deliciously dreamy cover of the RAH Band's 1983 UK boogie gem "Messages From The Stars".

  2. Im Blau (Sleep D remix) (9:03)
  3. The Gloves Don't Bite (Mount Liberation Unlimited re-edit for The dancefloor) (11:17)
Review: Mildlife has enjoyed a brilliant 2018, tickling our fancy with a cracking debut LP that effortlessly joined the dots between jazz-funk, dub, disco and Afro-funk flavours. To round off the year, their label has decided to sling out this EP of more club-focused reworks. Tornado Wallace steps up first with a wonderfully warm, tactile and groovy version of "The Magnificent Moon" packed with bustling breakbeats, Balearic piano flourished and loved-up chords, before Butter Sessions sort Sleep D brilliantly re-imagines "I'm Blau" as a deliciously percussive slab of pitched-down analogue dub techno. Arguably best of all, though, is Mount Liberation Unlimited's epic flipside take on "The Gloves Don't Take", which offers 11 mesmerizing minutes of chugging dub disco grooves, layered tribal percussion and lashings of spacey jazz-funk synths.

  1. Let Go (feat Kaneko Takumi From Cro-Magnon)
  2. Pilot (3:10)
Review: Sample-digging beat-maker DJ Mitsu The Beats has been churning out blazed grooves and hazy, head-nodding workouts for well over 15 years. You'll find a fine example of his woozy, laidback and emotion-rich approach on the B-side of this Mukatsuku Records outing, which marks his first appearance on wax since 2016. While that track, "Pilot", is all warm Rhodes lines, toasty bass, Vibraphone flashes and crunchy MPC beats, it lets A-side "Let Go" shine - it was made in collaboration with Kaneko Takumi from Cro-Magnon and features spacey, Herbie Hancock style synthesizer lead lines stretching out over rich Fender Rhodes chords and shuffling, bossa nova-influenced beats. As played by DJ Spinna, Kid Koala etc

  1. Shrunken Heads (5:34)
  2. Bebop (5:20)
Review: Former Bugz In The Attic crewmember Alex Phountzi first joined forces with fellow broken beat pioneer IG Culture four years ago. Together, they launched the NameBrandSound project with a tidy EP of bass-weight business on Ninja Tune's Technicolour offshoot. Here the experienced twosome return with their first - and presumably only - missive of 2018. A-side "Shrunken Heads" is something of a percussive, off-kilter dancefloor beast, as the duo re-imagines Talking Heads classic "Once In A Lifetime" as a rolling, bruk-up floor-filler. Over on side B, "Bebop" sees them pepper another swinging, house-influenced bruk-up rhythm with lashings of synth-sax and some suitably shimmering chords.

  2. Sugar Cane (feat Nubiya Brandon) (4:20)
Review: 12-piece improvisational outfit Nubiyan Twist made a big impression with their 2015 debut album (also called "Nubiyan Twist"), a set that gleefully joined the dots between Afrobeat, jazz, hip-hop, soul and much more besides. Here they make their debut on Strut Records with two more reasons to be cheerful. A-side "Tell It To Me Slowly", featuring guest vocals from Nick Richards, is particularly good, with soulful male and female vocals rising above a loose-limbed broken beat rhythm, warm electric piano riffs, jazzy guitar solos and Afro-tinged horns. Nubiya Brandon joins in the fun on flipside "Sugar Cane", a lolloping, head-nodding slab of hip-hop soul/dub fusion that's as delicious as a Michelin-starred meal and a fraction of the price.

  5. Tribes (Al Zanders remix) (7:11)
Review: When it was released back in 2017, Penya's debut album "Super Liminal" was praised for its unique fusion of Afro-Latin elements and contemporary electronics. This EP, where like-minded artists provide their own takes on the London band's 21st century global fusion, is not only appropriate, but also long overdue. Highlights are plentiful, too, from the woozy horns, chiming melodies and metronomic jazz-house beats of Photay's fine revision of "Cham Bomb", to the squeezy acid bass of Al Zanders' deep Balearic house take on "Tribes", via the layered African vocal harmonies and sunrise sweetness of Dengue Dengue Dengue's brilliant version of "Search It Out". Sarathy Korwar's bustling, lo-fi style, techno-tempo version of "Why So Angry" is pretty tasty, too.

Review: Two years ago, Thomas Xu announced himself via a fine debut 12" on Sound Signature where he shared vinyl space with Julion De'Angelo. Here he launches his own label, Steady Flight Circle, via a first full solo EP of his own. It's really rather good, with Xu combining spacey jazz-funk synths, emotive chord progressions and rich musicality with beats that tend towards the jazzy, broken and off-kilter. All three tracks feel loose, warm and immediate, as if they were jammed-out in one take. While they clearly weren't, this improvised feel is hugely endearing. From the sounds of "Different Widsoms", Xu will clearly be a producer to watch in the months and years ahead.

  1. Final Fight (2:58)
  2. Bowzer's Ballad (3:28)
Review: Thundercat's superb "Final Fight", a digital-only single earlier in the year, finally comes to vinyl. Sneakily, Brainfeeder only released it in Japan, hence the limited number of copies that have made it to Europe. It's worth the investment, though, because the song is one of the American's most endearing to date - a dewy-eyed chunk of eccentric, off-kilter soul where multi-tracked, blue-eyed soul style vocals, glistening jazz guitar arpeggios and fizzing synth sounds ride an aquatic, futuristic bassline. On the flip you'll find another previously digital-only release, "Bowzer's Ballad". This is an endearing, eight-bit tribute to former Nintendo boss Hiroshi Yamauchi. It was written in the weeks following his death, and features waves of electric piano and Game Boy soundtrack style synth solos.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

  3. Wu15 - "The Anthem" (5:04)
  4. Henry Wu - "Shahada" (2:53)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Henry Wu and K15 would link up with London's Eglo, and their respective prior releases for the likes of Wild Oats, Rhythm Section and 22a have earned them a spot in one of the finest house and broken beat labels around. "Love's Gambit" is a perfect example of the latter genre, a sublime blend of jazzy percussion swings and smooth melodic drifts, followed by the even more soulful bounces of the gentle "Space & Time" - one for the jazz fusion heads! "The Anthem" heads towards more housey spheres thanks to its stable beat pattern - it-s an absolute peach of a tune, by the way - but it's "Shahada" that governs the dancefloor with its rough MPC drum programming and finger-licking synth rotations. A beautiful and fitting addition to the catalogue.

Review: It was way back in 2008 when Dave Jones AKA Zed Bias joined forces in the studio with U.S hip-hop and house legend DJ Spinna and Manchester soul songstress Fyza. For one reason or another, the resultant track, "FWD & Back" was never released. Having recently rediscovered it on an old hard drive, Jones has decided to release it on Biasonic. The seven-inch contains both vocal and instrumental versions, with the former hitting home hardest thanks to Fyza's fine vocal, which reminded us a little of classic broken beat cuts by Bugz In The Attic and Neon Phusion. Musically, the backing track doffs a cap to those West London acts, too, as well as Jones' soul-fired bruk-up project for Hospital Records, Phuturistix.

Previously best known for playing guitar on Yussef Kamaal's "Black Focus" album, Mansur is a 21 year-old prodigy with a huge future ahead of him. For proof, just check "Shiroi", his debut album. Built around his virtuoso guitar playing - a fusion of the psychedelic intensity of Jimi Hendrix and the smooth bliss of jazz greats like George Benson and Pat Metheny - the set's eleven sparkling tracks variously mix and match elements of dub, instrumental hip-hop, broken beat, jazz-funk, beat-free soundscapes and hazy, suitably horizontal downtempo grooves. The results are uniformly excellent.

Review: Long-serving West African artist Angelique Kidjo has pushed the boat out on "Remain In Light", a radical re-imagining of Talking Heads' 1980 album of the same name produced in conjunction with Jeff Bhasker (a "superstar producer" best known for his work with Kanye West and Taylor Swift). In some ways, it has the same inventiveness as Talking Heads' original, it's just that Kidjo and Bhasker have added waves of glistening, West African guitars, intergalactic electronic flourishes, spacey synths and, of course, the effortless soulfulness of the artist's own superb vocals. Highlights include an arresting version of "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", a wild Afrobeat rendition of "Crosseyed & Painless" fused with Fela Kuti's "Lady" and a total overhaul of "Once In A Lifetime" that's worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Narrowing down Melbourne band Mildlife's style into a genre is almost impossible, as they bond over the desire to push musical boundaries. No strangers to the local band scene, these four longtime friends have been drawing crowds through an epic journey at intimate venues and festivals for the best part of four years. Developing a dynamic live show centered around wild improvisation, they have left punters itching for their first full length studio album. Their debut entitled Phase captures the spirit of their performances, with six tracks that are a kaleidoscope of jams is the interplanetary path between jazz, funk and disco, The perfect amalgamation of cosmic electronics and soulful acoustic instrumentation.
