Review: 44th Move is a project from talented pianist Alfa Mist and Richard Spaven, two of the brightest lights in London's current jazz scene revival. "We shared a lot of the same influences [so] we got to writing straight away" they say of their natural pairing. The music they come up with is lush, majestic, heart swelling, with broken beats and tender pianos. simmering chords and melancholic moods all permeating each of the sublime tracks. 'Hope' is a standout for its florid trumpet playing and 'Broken' is a real dancer for floors that know.

  2. Keep It Together (Jam 5) (3:42)
  3. Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
  4. Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

  6. Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

  1. Dreams Of Music (5:38)

  3. Slow Divers (6:50)
  4. Libra (5:41)
Review: Some of you may remember Aura Safari's 2018 debut album on Church, an ear-catching concoction that blurred the boundaries between jazz-funk, deep house and ambient. They've been all but silent since, so this new EP for the Balearic-minded Hell Yeah Recordings label is undoubtedly long overdue. In keeping with the imprint's seductive, sun-kissed sound, the EP sees them in sunset-ready mode, making great use of mid-80s, new age ambient style synths and soft-touch grooves. Opener 'Dreams of Music' wraps sparkling FM synthesizer melodies around a tactile, downtempo house groove, while 'Oasis' is a lusciously horizontal float through glistening Balearic boogie. Elsewhere, they give dub an ambient twist on 'Slow Divers', while 'Libra' is a sparkling, warm, positive and smile-inducing chunk of horizontal jazz-funk loveliness.

  2. Moths In Wallets (feat Mr Mensah) (5:07)
  3. Backchat For Toprock (5:18)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

  3. Pastime Paradise (feat Josh Milan) (3:58)
  4. Berimbau (feat Josh Milan & Lisa Fischer) (4:06)
Review: Unlike its predecessors, the third and final part of Elements of Life's reissue of their 2013 double-CD Eclipse does not come on a 12" double-pack, but rather a double seven-inch. It contains some genuine gems from Louie Vega's disco/Latin/house fusion collective, starting with a suitably rousing, celebratory and mood-enhancing diso-boogie cover of Joubert Singers' classic 'Stand on the Word'. The EP also sports two other tidy covers - a rich, sun-splashed jazz-funk take on Stevie Wonder classic 'Pastime Paradise' and a lazy, hazy, carnival-ready interpretation of Brazilian standard 'Berimbau' - as well as a deliciously jazzy EOL original called 'Hot Music'.

  3. You Come Into My Life (feat Anane) (4:34)
  4. Bass Run (4:03)
Review: Louie Vega is one of the wonders of the natural world. He has been making timeless music for more than a quarter of a century and unlike many of his aged peers, he still very much keeps on knocking it out of the park. The fourth part of his Eclipse project with the Elements of Life crew is another golden one. 'Fantasy' (feat Melanin) is a soul drenched opener with broken beats and trademark instrumental flair. Things get deeper on 'Harlem River Drive' with its Latin flourishes before 'You Come Into My Life' is a gorgeous vocal cut with jazzy keys. 'Bass Run' is a shuffling, finger clicking, rump wiggling gem to close.

Review: The late precision edit maestro Ryuhei The Man has taken his scalpel to a couple ,ore jams here and turned out typically high grade, sympathetic but essential edits that rework the tunes into dance floor dynamite. First up is Tusuke Hirdao's 'Early Bird' which is a driving, gliding, smooth as you like jazz-funk gem with knotted bass and expressive live drums. On the flip is the more cosmically minded 'Sonar' with its shimmering xylophone melodies, frenzied drum playing and heart warming chords. Amazing stuff.

  3. Takuya Kuroda - "Fade" (KEARL remix) (5:20)
  4. Teotima - "But I Can't" (K15 remix) (4:35)
Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

  4. Duppy Riddim (5:30)
Review: If you're looking for some heavyweight bruk-up business with serious sub-bass and plenty of dancefloor weight, we'd heartily recommend this fine four-tracker from 4 Hero's Marc Mac. All four tracks are brilliant, with the veteran North London producer giddily kicking things off via the '80s electro-influenced, bruk-funk of 'Uptown Posse', before opting for energetic hand percussion, chant style vocal snippets, electric piano motifs and fizzing synths on the rolling 'Kingston Hot'. You'll find a few subtle nods towards dancehall on the thrillingly percussive, bass-heavy electro-bleep cut 'Run Track', while EP closer 'Duppy Riddim' somehow manages to be insatiably funky, impressively weighty and attractively drowsy all at the same time. Masterful!

  1. Nautilus - "Move On Up" (feat Mizuki Kamata) (4:22)
  2. Mizuki Kamata - "Track 2" (feat Nautilus) (4:18)
Review: Nautilus are a Japanese band named after the iconic Bob James song, which also tells you a lot about their style - which is a mix of modern rare groove that also embodies elements of jazz, funk, disco, soul and hip hop. In just five years they have built up a solid global fan base and this new single explains why. 'Move On Up' (feat Mizuki Kamata) is both filled with golden era acid jazz goodness, but also slick modern jazz tinged grooves that fit right in with the contemporary landscape. ON the flip, 'Track 2' is more slow and late night, a tender basement jam for cuddly dancing.

  3. A Love Supreme Exodus (5:00)
Review: On paper, combining Coltrane jazz classic 'A Love Supreme' and Bob Marley's 'Exodus' in a Cuban jazz style seems like an odd idea, but as Joe Clausell and pianist Matt Jenson proved on their 2013 album as Rebel Tumbao, it's actually a genius one. For proof, check out the original mix, which is tucked away on the flipside of this belated remix EP. The real star attraction though is Ron Trent's A-side remix, which brilliantly re-images the track as a skanking chunk of slow-motion dub house complete with echoing vocal snippets, reverb-laden pianos and plenty of Latin and African style hand percussion. Eqwel's accompanying 'Dub Bass Mix', a more glitchy, electronic affair, is also well worth a listen.

  1. Strain (3:10)
  2. Initiation (3:42)
Review: Psych-funk specialists Delights has struck gold again with their latest release, which started life as a spontaneous recording session in 2018. The two tracks were polished up and finished off by one of the quartet of players involved, Grupo Modular's Markey Funk, who has helped turn them into cosmic, otherworldly and hallucinatory treats. The one for dancefloor plays is A-side 'Strain', a creepy, horror-influenced number that features crunchy, loose-limbed funk breakbeats, fuzzy bass, undulating synthesizer lines and bold electric piano stabs. Flipside 'Initiation' is another library funk influenced affair, with echoing synthesizer and electric piano sounds stretching out over a slow-motion beat and a hazy, alluring bassline. It's rather spaced-out all told, but that only makes it more attractive.

Review: Anton ScruScru Bogomolov is a mega hyped artist but for good reason. His slew of singles have all been noteworthy and now this new 12" overflows with more brilliant ideas. After a hugely prolific 2020 he shows no signs of slowing down here. Once again he fuses classic jazz-funk style with fresh London broken beat and wall that is good about the current jazz scene. Blurring boundaries as he goes this could be as good in a live setting as it could through a big sound system in a club. Big chords, bristling drumming, disco energy, it's all here and then some.

Review: Jackson Bailey AKA Tapes has long been able to producer masterful, memorable music with some of the cheapest-sounding electronic equipment around. He's at it again on 'Sauna Research', a picturesque and ultra-deep fusion of slow-motion dub and bittersweet electronica that's guaranteed to put a smile on your face despite the melancholic nature of the track's drifting synthesizer chords. He continues in a similar vein on the slightly more squelchy flipside 'Aquarium Trousers', where lilting lead lines and immersive chords bubble away atop a lo-fi drum machine beat and tactile, electrofunk-influenced synth bassline. These won't hang around for long, so grab one while you can.

  1. Mysteria (Electric remix) (3:56)

Review: In recent years we've become accustomed to Jimi Tenor flitting between off-kilter jazz, Afro-soul and - most recently via a Freestyleman collaboration - oddball house. 'Mysteria', his latest single, recalls the easy-going vocal numbers that marked out his years on Warp Records in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Not quite lounge, synth-pop, deep boogie or jazz-funk but rather something in between, the song features a typical lead vocal from Finland's greatest export bar Teemu Pukki, some seriously squelchy bass, and plenty of retro-futurist charm. Arguably even better is 'Vocalize My Love', a kind of jumpy Afro-dancehall number featuring analogue bass, hot-stepping drums and superb vocals courtesy of Florence Addoni and Lizzy Amaliyenga.

The jazz collective rework and reinterpret the work of Bjork Gudmundsdottir, a hugely influential pop artist over the last quarter of a century. These two tunes both break borders and travel far and wide. They were first covered a decade ago and have been put out as part of a live album before now, with the talented Becca Stevens on vocals. They have dynamic big band grooves that are perfect for the club with plenty of cool British jazz-funk overtones.

The five tracks featured on the release were recorded back in 2018, live in one day, at The Boathouse Studio in 2018 with their trombonist VVilhelm (Ebi Soda) at the controls. Here Mr Bongo serve up a taster single for the record in the form of 'Impasto.' It's got a hint of Brazilian artists like Arthur Verocai with its lavish sweeping strings and melodies. Review: 2fox do a fine job here of serving up their signature soulful, Afro house inspired sound. Their debut ling player The Inner Drum is a thing of rousing joy and upbeat beauty and features a host of talent3d guests who add their own distinctive vocal flavours. The title track is an airy, loose limed jam to get your warmed up, then 'Bailar' dials in to a more dance groove with fantastically organic bass playing. There are Afro workouts like 'Problem' that brim with big horns and Afro melodies and even a remix of 'Tomorrow' from Rudimental that is sure to become a breakout hit.

Review: According to the accompanying PR blurb, Alpha Mist's third studio album was inspired by a desire to go back to being an East London beat-maker, with Bring Backs cannily combining these hip-hop roots with the jazz, soul and jazz-funk fusions he's become known for in recent years. In truth, the album is still more heavily rooted in the jazzier side of his work than tapped-out, sample-heavy MPC grooves, but that's no criticism. There's some genuinely magical material on show, with a swathe of guest musicians - spoken word artists, singers, woodwind and horn players, double bassists and so on - joining in on tracks that neatly sidestep convention. The level of musical detail is staggering, while the vibe is warm and sun-kissed throughout.

  12. My Own (feat Marlowe) (3:47)
Review: Review: Even after his death, Tony Allen is still delivering ground-breaking and genre-bending releases. There is No End, a posthumous album largely recorded in 2019 but finished (with Allen's blessing) following his death by co-producers Vincent Taeger and Vincent Taurelle, veers away from the Nigerian drummer's Afro-beat, Afro-jazz and Afro-disco roots, instead combing his brilliant polyrhythms with elements of grime, dubstep, hip-hop, soul and funk, plus vocals from a veritable who's who of MCs, spoken word artists and singers. The results are hugely impressive and forward-thinking, offering a fittingly on-point post-script to Allen's exceptional career.

Review: Francisco Mora Catlett is a Mexican drummer, composer and educator. He began his musical career in Mexico City where he worked as a session musician for Capitol Records between 1968-1970. He left with Sun Ra in 1973 and worked with him until 1980. While in Detroit in 1987, he released his first album as a leader, the Pan-Afro project "Mora!". Mora II continues the concept of the first album, with wife Teresa Mora on vocals and trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave, This follow up album has finally been given a high quality vinyl reissue by London's Far Out Recordings.

Review: The evergreen Far Out Recordings here serve up, for the first time ever on vinyl, Mora! II, alongside the previously released Mora! Mexican-American percussionist and former member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Francisco Mora Catlett recorded the first of these albums as private presses in 1987. The follow up was with an expanded Detroit jazz brass section but was shelved for many years. Both are pan-American melting pots that stir up afro-cuban rhythms, fiery sambas, frenetic batucadas and much more which is why they have become such gold standard Latin jazz classics.
