  1. Open Your Head (5:58)
  2. EEYE (5:01)
  3. Common (5:30)
  4. People, Places, Things In Spaces (6:48)
Review: Take a listen to the four cuts that make up Jackson Almond's WotNot Music debut, "Open Your Head", and you'll hear a myriad of influences and musical reference points. That the DJ/producer has managed to get them to compliment each other is particularly impressive. Check, for example, the jaunty U.S garage/jazz-funk/broken beat/Afro-house fusion of "EEYE", for starters, or the sparkling opener "Open Your Head", where glistening guitars and marimba style melodies ride a rubbery synth bassline and rich, life-affirming chords. Almond's love of layered percussion is once again evident on the piano-sporting, sun-kissed deep house shuffle of "Common", while "People, Places, Things in Spaces" sees him pepper a jazzy, off-kilter deep house groove with the kind of spacey jazz-funk synths that were once a hallmark of Herbie Hancock albums.

  2. I Know You I Love You (reprise music & vocal only no beats mix) (6:07)
  3. I Know You I Love You (bonus beats version) (3:18)
Review: This, ladies and Gentlemen, is big news. After a break of 12 years, pioneering West London broken beat collective Bugz In The Attic have reunited to deliver a brand new, ultra-limited 12" containing fresh revisions of 1981 Chaka Khan classic "I Know You, I Live You". The A-side "Chakattic Mix" is particularly wonderful, layering Khan's ultra-positive, life-affirming vocal above the crew's trademark bruk-up beats, jazzy bass and sensational jazz-funk synths (provided, no doubt, by original crew-member Kaidi Tathtam). Over on side B, they up the spine-tingling "end of night" factor via a version containing just music and vocals, before once more proving their immense drum programming skills via a delay-laden "Bonus Beats" DJ tool. In a word: brilliant.

  3. Mariposa (6:44)
Review: Earlier in the year, we were full of praise for "Murmuration", the long-awaited debut album from James O'Keefe and Dave Koor's Expansions project. Famously, that album was recorded in just three days, with the duo and their musical collaborators managing to deliver a polished set despite its spontaneous, freeform roots. We're not sure if the three cuts on this follow-up EP were recorded in a similar manner, but they're certainly pleasingly loose, languid and live sounding. Check the title track "Mosaic", where impeccable jazz-funk electric piano solos ride jaunty bass and swinging live drum breaks, before tucking into the cascading jazz guitar solos, hushed drums and spacey chords of "Transcoso". Over on side B, "Mariposa" sits somewhere between the two A-side cuts, with spacey, stretched-out synth solos catching the ear.

  1. White Sedan (7:01)
  2. White Sedan (Glenn Astro & Hodini remix) (4:53)
  3. White Sedan (Werkha remix) (4:45)
Review: First featured on the B-side of Munich jazz four-piece Fazer's fine debut album "Mara", "White Sedan" is an inventive and hugely entertaining fusion of off-kilter African polyrhythms, atmospheric chords, gentle Balearic guitars and stoned jazz-funk instrumentation. This deserved single release combines the band's fine original version with two fresh reinterpretations. Arguably the best of these comes from Glenn Astro and Hodini, who bury the original percussion in favour of a clicking drum machine rhythm, while also drenching the band's warm electric piano lines in oodles of dub delay. Werkha, too, passes the electric piano player a jazz cigarette, but wisely makes the most of the German band's brilliant polyrhythmic percussion.

  2. First Light (4:28)
Review: Ishmael Collective are a Bristol based 'experimental jazzwise electronica' collective led by saxophonist and producer Pete Cunningham. Their last release was championed by the likes of Dan Snaith, Antal and Gilles Peterson and the follow-up sees Cunningham slip into a nostalgic haze. Here, he throws back to his formative years in Bristol's late noughties scene. "Tunnels" is a hypnotic and psychedelic journey through the outer limits of modern jazz, while the glistening ambient textures of "First Light" on the B side sees the collective express yet more of their deft and charming musicality.

  3. On Again (Dubstramental) (6:07)
Review: Listen again to Martin "Atjazz" Iveson's early noughties output and you'll find many rhythmic nods to the then popular West London broken beat scene. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the latest single on the Derby producer's label - a debut from the previously unheralded Marc and Oveous - pays tribute to that sound. While effortlessly deep and soulful (think woozy chords, soulful vocals and Iveson style jazz-funk synth flourishes), the track's most distinctive feature is its' Seiji-esque rhythm track. On the flipside the duo delivers contrasting instrumental takes - a bruk-up "Dubstramental", and a chunky "4/4 Dub" to slip effortlessly in to deep house sets.

  4. Eleven Days
Review: After first appearing on the label back in 2016, Florence-based Italo house stalwarts Minimono return to Vibraphone with another selection of illustrious dancefloor gems for subtler moments in the dance. "Oldest Friend" is an airy, dreamlike track laden with upper register chords, tones and FX pinging around in a reverie of deep house delight, while "Questions" gets locked into a loose, swinging groove with some mysterious pads swirling around the middle distance for added atmosphere. "Some Day" is a more rugged affair that bumps and wriggles in all the right places, while "Eleven Days" explores broken beat territory without losing the hazy atmosphere that permeates the EP.

  1. Flying Fantasy (exclusive instrumental version) (4:35)
  2. Rhodes E Serenidade (3:37)
Review: On this latest tasty Mukatsuku seven-inch, label boss Nik Weston has raided the back catalogue of Modern Sun Records founder and experienced jazz-wise producer Marc Friedli AKA Skymark. A-side "Flying Fantasy" originally appeared on the Spanish producer's 2016 album "Resistance Sonore", but is here featured in instrumental form for the first time. If anything, it's better than the original version, largely because we get to revel in Friedli's mazy Fender Rhodes solos, rubbery jazz-funk synth bass and loose-limbed, West London style broken beats. You'll find plenty more jaunty jazz-funk vibes and liquid electric piano solos on B-side cut "Rhodes E Serenidade", which first slipped out way back in 2015. Review: Two years ago, Early Sounds Recordings co-founder Pellegrino S. Snichelotto dished up a debut mini-album that brilliantly joined the dots between Daniele Baldelli style Afro-cosmic grooves and jazz-funk. This is his first outing since and explores similarly sunny and meandering sonic territory, beginning with the languid guitar solos, jaunty electric piano riffs and Tullio de Piscopo style percussion of "Astri & Riflessi". Smoother and deeper dancefloor jazz-funk flavours are provided by "Zodyaco", "Libra Position" is a dub-driven affair rich in spacey synth solos and heavy bass, and "Genti Del Mediterraneo" is a riotous dancefloor workout rich in crunchy Clavinets, elastic slap bass and wild electric piano solos. It is, then, every bit as essential as its fine predecessor.

  2. Luz Da Joaca (Gerardo Frisina dub) (3:40)
Review: With a career stretching back to the turn of the '90s, Stefano 'S-Tone' Sirone has long been one of Italy's foremost purveyors of jazz-fired goodness. Last year he returned to action with "Onda", a brilliant set of jazz-funk, disco, samba and deep house fusion that also marked his first album-length excursion for four years. This nifty seven-inch offers up two new interpretations of one of that collection's standout tracks, "Luz Da Joaca", by fellow Italian nu-jazz veteran Gerardo Frisina. On the A-side, he turns it into a Clavinet-sporting chunk of samba-house fusion rich in layered percussion and '70s style Brazilian jazz-funk vocals. The flipside dub, an altogether heavier and more percussively intense affair, is arguably even better.

Review: Saine presents three diverse house essences following his previous releases on the likes of Odd Socks, Voyage and Must Have. "Act Natural" kicks things off with a rolling crunch before taking a sudden left turn into something so naturally uplifting you can't help but think of DJ Gregory in his prime. "Jus Right" eases back a little and digs deep into the wavey sliding synths before "Low Key" rounds off with a more hypnotic perspective. With Pontchartrain on remix duties, we're really being spoilt here. Straight up grandeur.

Review: Synth-wielding Melbourne man Harvey Sutherland has been off the radar since releasing his superb debut album last year. While that was musically expansive, this three-track EP is even more ambitious. A-side "Amethyst", is an utterly brilliant, lilting Afro-jazz fusion of the highest order, with celestial horn riffs and starry-eyed pianos rising above a skittish, Tony Allen-meets-Ginger Baker rhythm. Turn to the flipside for "I Can See", a high-octane, 2000Black style workout heavy on spacey synths and sunset-friendly jazz guitars, and a killer rework of the same track by fellow Aussie Rings Around Saturn that re-imagines it as a bass-heavy chunk of deep space jungle.

Review: It's already been a great year for Kaidi Tatham, whose summer album "It's A World Before You" on First Word remains one of our favourite full-length sets of 2018. He's in great form once again on this follow-up EP for the 2000 Black imprint he co-helms with pal Dego. All four tracks bristle with his signature jazz-funk focused synthesizer solos and Herbie Hancock style flourishes, as well as plenty of sweaty, floor-friendly broken beats. Killer dancefloor thrills come in the shape of opener "Freddie Can't Run Away" (it's very reminiscent of his 2000s work as Agent K) and "Is Crimbo Really Here", while "But You Bring It Up" and standout "In My Life" both explore slower, deeper and more musically intricate pastures.

Review: Drummer, composer and producer Moses Boyd has been labelled as "one to watch" since winning the "Best Jazz Act" gong at the 2015 MOBO Awards. Three years on, and with a handful of lauded EPs behind him, Boyd is finally ready to deliver his debut solo album. We say, "solo album", but "Displaced Diaspora" is undoubtedly a collaborative affair, with various invited guests joining in with Boyd's distinctively eclectic, anything-goes fusion fun. Afro-brass outfit Kevin Haynes Grupo Eleggua make a huge impression on a number of tracks, Zara McFarlane provides a sensual, sumptuous vocal on the classic late night jazz smokiness of "City Nocturne" and Terri Walker and Louis V rise above the organic, jazz-fuelled hip-hop soul brilliance of "Waiting On The Night Bus".

Review: Four years on from solo comeback "Blank Project", veteran chanteuse Neneh Cherry returns with an album overflowing with lyrical potency. Like many people, the sometime Rip, Pig and Panic and Slits singer is rather depressed with the state of the world, and has used the album to comment on many of today's ills. Combine her eccentric (but undoubtedly on-point) social commentary with vibrant musical backing that refuses to settle on one sound or style - we detected jazz, ambient, dub, trip-hop, calypso, Balearica, folk and electronic at various points, and sometimes multiple genres within one track. Cherry has a great track record, of course, but even by her standards "Broken Politics" is something special.
