Devotion (12")
Cat: EGLO 066. Rel: 05 Sep 19
  1. K15 (Devotion) (7:27)
  2. Patrick Gibin (Cloud Nine) (6:11)
Review: Eglo Records' 10th birthday celebrations are in full swing. They've already notched up a riotous birthday party that got rave reviews, and later in the year will release a brand new compilation of previously unheard treats. It's this collection that's being trailed here via Kieran "K15" Ifill's "Devotion", a dancefloor-focused chunk of soul-flecked broken beat that Ego co-founder Alexander Nut recently described as "music for the mind, body and soul". Over on the flip there's a vinyl-only exclusive in the shape of Ifill's remix of Patrick Gibin and Javonntte's recent jazz-funk fired soulful house workout "Cloud 9". Ifill opts for a heavy bruk-up flavour, wrapping soulful musical elements from the original around punchy, loose-limbed beats and speaker-bothering low-end pressure.

Montpelier/Rumex (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: TIO S3. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Montpelier (5:47)
  2. Rumex (6:19)
Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

Tell Me (7")
Cat: OTIS 006. Rel: 10 Sep 19
  1. Tell Me (feat Tyson) (4:08)
  2. Healer (3:42)
Review: Last time we heard from London's Lord Tusk, he was joining the dots between deep house and dub via a fine 2018 EP on MIC. Seven-inch single "Tell Me" is an altogether different beast, with the A-side title track offering a spacey, guitar-laden trip into lo-fi rock/intergalactic synth-pop fusion featuring the woozy vocal talents of sometime Unklejam member Tyson. Turn to the flip for "Healer", a gloriously reverb-heavy trip into late night Fleetwood Mac/AOR guitars, skittish drums, tipsy lead vocals and all manner of starburst dub effects.

  1. Don't You Let Go (feat Kenny Wesley) (7:56)
  2. Number One Station (feat Daniel Meinecke) (6:15)
  3. Don't You Let Go (feat Kenny Wesley - DJ Spinna Galactic Soul remix) (8:21)
  4. Don't You Let Go (feat Kenny Weslet - Caserta At Work remix) (7:17)
Review: Sol Power Sound has had a solid 2019 but they aren't done yet: this new one features an all star cast with remixes by legendary DJ Spinna and LA's Joseph Caserta. DC-based vocalist Kenny Wesley is at the heart of the operation and features on "Don't You Let Go", with multi-layered drums and dub weight soaring to the skies. "Number One Station" features Daniel Meinecke and is a golden broken beat with all the hits and scattered percussion that make this such perfect body music. Spinna's remix is pure feel good, good time house music with old school spirituality, while Caserta pays more than a subtle tribute to Masters At Work's famously chunky drums with his "Caserta At Work" remix.

  1. The Soul Feast (Drum dub) (6:49)
  2. The Soul Feast (acappella EFXS) (6:54)
Review: In 2009, two years after the original version appeared on Somi's debut album "Red Soil In My Eyes", Joaquin "Joe" Claussell and Brian Bacchus joined forces as Soul Feast to remix Fela Kuti cover "African Lady". A decade on, Claussell has decided to reissue the package's most potent and percussive moment, the layered "Drum Dub" on a tasty seven-inch single. While there are key elements of Somi's original version present - the killer bassline, some delay-laden horns and fleeting glimpses of guitar - the mix is dominated by layered Afro-house percussion. This time round, the mix comes backed with an "Acapella EFXS" version, which contains all of Somi's superb vocal and is closer in tone to the duo's 2009 club mix. Like the A-side, it's superb.

  1. You Find That I Got It (4:45)
  2. Mjuvi (4:49)
Review: The hardest-working man in West London is back! By now we've become accustomed to Kaidi Tatham offering up regular doses of soul and jazz-funk-fired dancefloor goodness, but even by his high standards "You Find That I Got It" is something special. Warm, woozy, groovy and full of intricate musical details - brief synth solos, subtle orchestration and so on - the A-side title track is a wonderfully sunny slice of instrumental boogie-soul. Tatham's world-renowned keys playing comes to the fore on the organic broken beat/jazz-funk fusion of "Mjuvi", a flipside cut that's almost as good as the exceptional title track.

Clavinet Discourse (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: UZURI 029. Rel: 16 Sep 19
  1. Clavinet Discourse (5:09)
  2. Talking Song (6:33)
  3. Talking Song (dub version) (6:34)
  4. Thousands Of Chimes Together (5:45)
Review: Luca Murgia is Two Thou - an alias which has seen him land intriguing releases on Burek, Fields & Forests and his own Gifted Culture label. Now he's been snapped up by Uzuri with some star-gazing cuts that straddle broken beat, deep house and something more altogether cosmic. "Clavinet Discourse" is the consummate lead track, a true showstopper with astral synth flex and a sharp, snappy beat. "Talking Song" has a more pronounced deep house bump and leads that wouldn't sound out of place on Strictly Jaz Unit - the dub version does away with the leads if you want something subtler. "Thousands Of Chimes Together" completes the set with a spiritual throwdown to invigorate any open-minded dancefloor.

  12. A Where Pringle Deh? (2:14)
  13. My Standards Are (Not) Too High (8:40)
Review: In our eyes, 2000 Black lynchpin Dego can do no wrong. You'll therefore be unsurprised to hear that we're huge fans of the 4Hero founder member's latest solo album, a belated follow-up to 2015's "The More Things Stay The Same". It is, of course, superbly soulful, slicky produced and wonderfully paced, moving from the heady soul sweetness of "A Strong Move For Truth", to the deep jazz-funk/broken beat vibes of "My Standards Are (Not) Too High" via 12 other warm and seductive cuts of an equally high standard. Highlights include the summery bruk-soul bliss of "Remini Dream", the toasty boogie revivalism of "Unknown Faults" and the Clavinet-sporting brilliance of Lady Alma hook-up "Just Leave It".

  7. The Traveller (6:45)
Review: Since he released his first album 11 years ago, bandleader, trumpeter and composer Matthew Halsall has proved to be one of British jazz's standout talents. In recent years he's delved into soul-jazz and big band jazz territory, so it's intriguing to find that "Oneness" is a much more spiritual, pared-down and minimalistic affair. Using a mixture of droning Indian instrumentation, languid and leisurely harp motifs, selective horn solos, melancholic trumpet lines and occasional traditional jazz instrumentation, Halsall has conjured up a series of meditative pieces that count among his most beguiling works to date. It may surprise a few listeners, but many more will find it enchanting, otherworldly and emotion-rich.

Review: South London pianist and composer Ashley Henry is a versatile musician who can move between all niches within his musical realm: hip hop, broken beat, jazz and fusion flows from his finger tips and all characterise his expansive and expressive new album "Beautiful Vinyl Hunter". Stellar collaborators Makaya McCraven, Judi Jackson and MC Sparkz amongst others all help enrich this album as it flows from post-bop to classic jazz to neo-soul in thrilling fashion. Rooted in tradition but with a distinctly London edge that soars to new heights, this record sets a new benchmark for the contemporary scene.

Review: Curiosities is the second album in the trilogy from in-demand New Zealand multi-instrumentalist and producer Lord Echo. Six years after initial release, this reissue sounds as vital as ever and is extra DJ-friendly given that it is spread across two slabs of wax. It covers plenty of ground from escapist tropical ambient to lovably lazy dubs via vivid disco-funk. Highlights come in the form of "Molten Lava" and its heart wrenching vocals and the gospel grooves of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Winter might be fast approaching, but so long as you have sounds as warm and sunny as these around, summer will never feel too far away.

Review: Moonchild are one of the many jewels in the Tru Thoughts fam. Their mellifluous sound melts jazz chords, angelic neo-soul vocals and broken beats to cathartic effect, and "Little Ghost" marks the LA-based band's third album on the label, fourth overall. There are no great deviations from their signature formula here, but that's not a problem: there will always be space in anyone's collection for the golden late night grooves of "Too Much To Ask," twinkling keys of "Sweet Love" and romantic Sunday morning sounds of the enchanting "Strength," amongst many other highlights.

Review: Headed up by jazz-man and broken beat hero Mark de Clive-Lowe, Tokyo's Ronin Arkestra is an all-star collective that includes members of some of Japan's leading jazz and electronic music outfits. We shouldn't really be surprised, then, that debut album "Sonkei" is rather special. It features some suitably grandiose and epic contemporary jazz workouts - see "Onkochishin", the wonderfully spiritual and dancefloor-friendly "The Art of Altercation" and loose-limbed closing cut "Tempestuous Temperaments" - but the influence of other forms of music (most notably dub, ambient and electronica) is evident throughout, often in subtle and surprising ways. In other words, it sounds like a future jazz classic in the making.

Review: Canadian collective The Soul Jazz Orchestra's latest studio album is a cheery tonic for our troubled times. That's not to say it doesn't engage you with some thought-provoking moments along the way (the pay gap, dodgy landlords, police brutalities, the current US administration) but generally the musicianship is uplifting and hypnotic. The album draws on funk, jazz and soul with Latin, Caribbean and Afro twists that make it work on the dance floor as well as home stereo. Anthems like "General Strike" exhibit some 2 tone swagger and "Sky High" is pure disco dynamite.

Review: You won't hear many albums as direct, hard hitting and confrontational as this: musing on the black experience, culture, identity, love and trauma, it is a spoken word and poetic masterclass from California born Tenesha The Wordsmith with production from Khalab. Jazz, electronic dance, afro rhythms, hip hop and broken beat all make up the grooves and beautifully frame the album's thundering truths and uncomfortable realities. At times intimate and personal, at others chest beating and empowering, it is an album that makes a lasting impact. "I hope your compassion for others grows," says Tenesha of listening to it, and surely it will.
