Heli Yuweli (5:40)
Heli Yuweli (Rezzett remix) (4:08)
Heli Yuweli (Rezzett rerezz) (4:43)
Review: Syrian wedding singer gone hero of the electronic underground Omar Souleyman is back, this time on The Trilogy Tapes. The original of "Yuli Yuweli" appears in all its exotic, Middle Eastern pop glory, with two remixes by label mainstay Rezzett. The first being a typically dusty and rusty rendition with overdriven aesthetics sounding like a lost tape from 1989. The "Rezzett Rerezz" is what it's all about though; taking the vintage and antiquated aesthetics into deeper, spacier territories quite brilliantly, much like that other dusty kid Terreke.

Myriam Makeba - "Toyota Fantasy" (John Bryan edit) (3:52)
Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: The Strut label have done it again, people. Known for digging up some of the most obscure and interesting material from around the globe - both musically and culturally - the label sits alongside the likes of London's Honest Jon's Records in its ability to pull out unheard material from thin air. This time, we have a compilation of Mauritius' Sega music, a local kind of blues music that has its roots in traditional African music started by slaves of plantations who were looking for greener pastures. The 60's saw the explosion of the genre, and throughout this collection of tunes, you'll hear influences from just about any genre across the soul spectrum. There's psych, Afro beat, Ethiopian funk, and Fela-style chanting. It's a truly remarkable release, and it comes warmly recommended. This could well be up there in the top ten for 2016's world charts... and it's only February!

Celia - "A Hora E Essa" (3:04)
Franco - "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" (2:34)
Review: Two more rare grooves purloined from Cultures Of Soul's Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul and delivered on a sweet 45: Celia's "A Hora E Essa" is a steamy Latin funk workout from 72; all horns, cuicas and soft, honeyed vocals. Franco's "Ei, Voce, Psiu!" takes a more US funk idea with Franco's spoken vocals giving off a strong air of bandleader as the band lock down a tight groove beneath. Watch out for samba flip towards the end. Blink and you'll miss it.

Los Superiores - "Mujer Traicionera" (2:59)
Camilo Azuquita - "Borombon" (2:54)
Review: Soulful Torino's rarity-dedicated off-shoot imprint Sabrosura sasses into a new year with two sprightly boogaloo gems. Los Superiores live up to their name with some really detailed, tight percussion, solid harmonies and gradual horn impact. Camilo Azuquita offer more of a carnival feel with more space around the instrumentation creating a smoky sense of drama. Both previously impossible to find, it's another Sabrosura success story.

Review: What happens when you enlist the skills of 23 young musicians from Ghana, Belize and Glasgow? This... A totally unique record that rolls deep in equatorial fusion. From the harmonic chants and minimal tribal drums of "Ave Wo Nane" to the loose fuzzy funk of "Come With Me" by way of the slinky timpani of "Beat The Drum" and the dramatic unplugged dancehall of "Set Upon The River", each track is a melting pot moments that proves (as if we needed reminding) the universal language of music. All proceeds are split between the Ghanaian and Belize troupes to build new resources in their respective homelands. A seriously cool project.

Tom Ze - "Jimmy, Renda-Se" (3:38)
Eduardo Araujo - "Kizumbau" (3:48)
Review: Cultures Of Soul's Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul unleashes two more once-rare gems on 45: recently spotted on The Man From Unkle soundtrack, tropicalia fusionist Tommy Ze gets fuzzy and frenetic with "Jimmy Renda Se". With its deep cut, loose string riff, rhythmic Q&A vocals and occasional strings, it's one of many reminders of how out there Tommy was. Flip for the equally unique and alluring "Kizumbau" where Eduardo and his troupe let us imagine what life would have been like if The Doors and Babe Ruth were Brazilian and collaborated.

Review: Ghanaian producer DJ Katapila laid down this truly unique document in 2009. Now reissued on Awesome Tapes From Africa, Trotro takes us on a crazy trip around his country's traditional ga music by way of 808s and 909s. The result is a fast-paced, linear, stripped back trip that oozes character, fun, funk and some really off-the-cuff moments of madness like the pitched-up vocal twists on "Zoomlion" and his own staccato vocal drama on "Cocoawra". One of a kind.

Review: The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk & Soul gems keep flying out from Cultures Of Soul: Novos Baianos' 1970 rarity "Juventude Sexta E Sabado" is a heartfelt, yearning slice of psychedelic soul peppered with urgent Plant-level vocals while Dom Salvador & Abolicao's "Uma Vida" is the ultimate feel-good song: what begins as a funk soul tracks suddenly rips into gospel with so much gusto you genuinely can't stay still. One of the best 45s to come from the collection so far.
