Review: Gone beyond. That's what they say when an (astro) pilot crashes to earth and takes the journey into the big sky. When Juan Trippe took that last flight little did he know that his re-incarnated self would be an electronic pioneer. In tandem with his co-pilot Guido Zen (his own father also a pilot) and Kyle Martin (from the Land Of Light) they formed Brain Machine and scaled the highest Peaks to bring back music both unearthly and intensely human. Are we all not stardust anyway? This music proves it, takes you out flips you over and rolls you in stardust. Don't try and think it through, make sense of it, grasp it - just wander in wonder and bask in beauty.
Get lost again.

Review: Pavel Milyakov has largely impressed since making his debut under the Buttechno alias earlier this year, delivering a pair of 12" singles that gather together short, hardware-driven experiments in a variety of dystopian styles. Here, the Russian producer debuts under his given name, once again flitting between dark and spacey dancefloor workouts, bleak broken techno, macabre electro, wonky IDM and panicky ambience. Despite the stylistic shifts, the EP hangs together impressively, thanks in no small part to Milyakov's penchant for industrial textures, tape echo and haunting melodies. If you're into the releases of L.I.E.S and Berceuse Heroique, you need this in your life.

Review: Despite now being 25 years into their career, Plaid duo Ed Handley and Andy Turner show no signs of showing up. If The Digging Remedy - their 11th studio set - is anything to go by, their instincts remain as sharp as ever. They've always been capable of creating magical music that contrasts experimental electronic rhythms with picturesque melodies and mood-enhancing sounds, and The Digging Remedy is full of the stuff. Intriguingly, many of the tracks seem deeper and more subdued than previous explorations, with clear ambient and neo-classical influences amongst the classic electro and IDM flavours you'll find on the album's more up-tempo moments.

Review: Gigi Masin's second coming after the wondrous Music From Memory retrospective back in 2014 has been one of contemporary music's most heart-warming stories, with the ever-smiling Venetian embracing new musical endeavours and friends. Alongside the Gaussian Curve album recorded with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash, Masin brought a degree of considered pedigree to the Lifted project on PAN. Outside of all this however, Masin has cultivated a strong musical bond with compatriots and Hell Yeah founders Tempelhof, with this album Tsuki arriving two years on from the trio's first LP-length sojourn together. Some nine tracks long, Tsuki will entrance Masin fans as the three musicians lead you on a gentle, warm and enveloping saunter through kosmische, new age and sounds reminiscent of the Japanese minimalist electronics pioneers.

Review: British duo Raime are back with the first album since 2012's brilliant Quarter Turns A Living Line and their signature style of dark ambience and haunting imaginary soundtracks which incorporate jungle, dub and post-punk influences into the mix also. The album is said to be largely influenced by their side project Moin which incorporates rock and metal influences too. According to Blackest Ever Black "the DNA of dub-techno, garage/grime and post-hardcore rock music spliced into sleek and predatory new forms." Highlights include the moody subtractive rock of "Dialling In, Falling Out", the dub and post punk crossover of "Dead Heat" and the brooding mood-lighting of "Cold Cain".

Nerd (4:58)
Intermission (4:46)
Review: Danny Bosten's Das Ding project is no newcomer to the scene. In fact, the Dutch pseudo electro artist has been active since the mid-1980s via his quirky Tear Apart Tapes label, dealing specifically in cassettes until this new 7". "Nerd" is one of those tunes that crosses many genres and paths, taking the spirit of Kraftwerk and placing it onto a new plateau that is both relevant and inclusive of contemporary styles and ideas...that bassline could be left on for hours on end! "Intermission" is similarly leftfield, except that here Bosten scraps the buzzy bassline in favour of more tranquil sounds and samples that edge on the Japanese end of the spectrum. Recommended

Body Sculptures first formed on record last year on Posh Isolation with a 7" and cassette but now return with a more comprehensive offering in the shape of a debut LP entitled A Body Turns To Eden for the same label. Posh Isolation are one of our favourite labels right now and this nine track LP is a powerful statement, fizzing with ambient energy and willing the ears to listen over and over to uncover all that sonic detail.

Nous Savons Tout (5:36)
Melodie Moderne (5:45)
Review: Those in the know regard Space Art as one of French electronic music's most under-appreciated acts. Active between 1978 and '81, Synthesizer obsessive Dominique Perrier and drummer Roger Rizzitelli were famed for releasing killer chunks of "cosmic pop", before performing them live wearing specially made silver space suits. "Nous Savons Tout", which was recorded and released in 1981, remains one of their most potent singles. Creepy, strange, hypnotic and undeniably cosmic, Perrier's trippy synth parts seemingly rise and fall over Rizzitelli's metronomic, proto-techno drums. Flipside "Melodie Moderne" has an altogether different feel, coming on like a pitched-down, cosmic disco take on the artier side of 1970s progressive rock.

Review: Life & Death's head honcho DJ Tennis serves up some brooding, pop inflected deep house for main room madness on "Divisions" featuring the rich vocals of Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish pop-tronica trio Whomadewho; expect to be hearing a lot of this one this year! We've also the more straight ahead, dark melodic journey track executed in the way that only a Life & Death record can be on "Chirality" featuring some intense atmosphere provided by Sophie Trudeau's (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) string orchestra direction. "Divisions" gets an equally dark and mysterious remix, full of rich synth leads and bleepiness by Frankfurt master Roman Flugel and "Chirality" gets an epic makeover by experimental electronica legends Plaid, which is equally worthy of your attention.

Review: Last year, Burnt Friedmann and Uwe Schmidt reunited as Flanger for the first time in a decade, releasing the IDM-meets-future jazz full-length Lollopy Dripper. Here the experimental electronica veterans are at it again, delivering three more eccentric chunks of body-popping electronic jazz-fusion. They begin with the spacey throb of "Spinner", where broken computer noises and glitch electronics ride an undulating, off-kilter drum machine groove. "It From Bit" retains the attractive glitches of its' predecessor, blending them with an up-tempo, dub-influenced techno rhythm. Finally, they let their jazz influences run free on the computerized broken beat-meets-IDM-in-dub fizz of "Loose Joints".

Review: Periodica is a new label from Italian collective Early Sounds Recordings which by their own description will represent their "freaky side," or in essence a platform for more esoteric fare from the likes of Mystic Jungle Tribe and The Normalmen. After a few cassette releases, Periodica presents a debut vinyl transmission from Whodamanny of Mystic Jungle Tribe called Cosmic Morphology. The meandering nature of the LP is in fact a tribute to the Casio CZ-101 synthesiser, comprised of skits, sketches, noodles and occasional grooves sandwiched together across nineteen tracks. It's a pretty wonky ride as you would expect, but it's equally rich in wonderful sounds coaxed from the much-loved synthesiser. Killer stuff as ever from the Early Sounds crew!!!

Lausanne (part 2) (13:15)
Review: Laraaji is a recognised name within the experimental music scene, responsible for countless - and monumental - collaborations with the great Brian Eno. Sun Araw feels like exactly the right artist to scout for a new collaboration in 2016, and the two fit together like hand in glove on this two-tracker for W.25th, a new offshoot of the excellent Superior Viaduct. "Liepgzig (Part 1)" is a deep, liquid-like abstraction that covers many styles and ideas, bringing forth several different elements like harps and sporadic synth bleeps - a truly cinematic experience; "Part 2" of the same tune develops a beat among its arrangement, one that doesn't stop the track from losing any of its waywardness. The first segment of "Lausanne" is more spiritual, like some sort of ritual to the Gods, while the second veers head-first into a pool of bric-a-brac percussion with an Eastern tint. Excellent and wholeheartedly recommended.

Review: Former Playhouse and Bio Rhythm man Roger Reuter has only one previous album to his name, the woozy, edge-of-reason ambience of 2015's Mensch 001. Extended Play is its' follow up, and sees the experienced German producer appear on Ilian Tape for the first time. Rooted in his usual brand of unsettling, otherworldly ambience, the six tracks variously draw influence from early IDM, drone, dub techno, industrial and experimental film soundtracks. Despite these nods to familiar experimental styles, it's an album that can easily be listened to in a variety of situations, and never drags. It's strongest moments, such as the mournful ambient throb of "State IIX Interlude II", are particularly beguiling.

I Just Want You To Stay (17:59)
Wouldn't Wanna Be Swept Away (20:01)
Review: It was about time that someone struck up a partnership between Fennesz and Jim O'Rourke, two respected names in the ambient kingdom and masters of the art form. "I Just Want You To Stay" is crest-fallen, a track dragged forwards by lonesome, dissolving synths that seem to melt and recompose with each new turn, making this an abstract song with plenty of momentum. "Wouldn't Wanna Be Swept Away", on the other hand, is less sculptured and loose around the edges, managing to retain movement and shape through its chirping bundle of bleeps and diluted melodies. You wouldn't expect anything less from these two.

The Same River Twice (14:57)
A Different River Once (18:23)
Review: Rupert Clervaux and Beatrice Dillon have been working together for some time, and they both first appeared on record when contributing cuts to an all-star album whose music was created using instruments made of recycled Mexican firearms. Two Changes makes similar use of unusual noises, samples and field recordings, with A-side "The Same River Twice" blending rhythms created via this 'found sound' method with drowsy trumpet lines, and occasional blasts of other acoustic instruments. On the flip, they take a slightly different approach, fusing glitch-inspired drum tracks (think two-step garage processed through a broken computer) with jazzy synth stabs and cut-up vibraphone solos. Both sides are inspired, inventive and hugely entertaining.

Review: Interestingly, Din A Testbild's 1981 album, Programm 2, was a big favourite with Italian cosmic disco pioneers Daniel Baldelli and DJ Mozart. Recorded at Klaus Schulze's studio a year after their experimental new wave debut - a seminal release in the story of Berlin's avant-garde scene - it's sound is undeniably more polished and heavily electronic than its' lauded predecessor. While still firmly experimental in outlook, Programm 2 contains some moments of almost overwhelming beauty (see the spellbinding pianos and dreamy synthesizer textures of "Tight Pants" and similarly spaced-out "Harrakiry Mon Amour"), as well as dubbed-out trips into weird electronic territory.

Escape Form New York (3:34)
Review: Sacred Bones is not messing around when it comes to reissuing mythical songs from legendary soundtracks across the board, and their latest releases truly do get the old mouth-watering. This new picture disc contains 1979's "Halloween" on the A-side, and 1981's "Escape From New York", both timeless films that have left viewers awestruck thanks to, in part, their fantastic scores. You'll all recognise that Halloween chimes, those eerie chimes of coldwave synths, but perhaps Escape From New York is less immediately recognisable, but that's a shame because it is potentially the less aged of the two and still a track to break a set in half with something beautiful and unexpected.

Review: Din A Testbild's 1980 debut full-length, Programm 1, long been considered something of an experimental, post-punk classic by krautrock experts. Here, the album gets a timely reissue on Berlin's Mannequin Records. The set was recorded at Klaus Schulze's studio, and contained contributions from a number of German and American experimental musicians. The album's six tracks are surprisingly varied, and feature nods towards post-punk noise, abstract electronics, dub, beat poetry, wayward krautrock, early Cabaret Voltaure, Stockhausen style tape experiments, and the pitch-black output of Joy Division. Highlights are plentiful, from the bizarre ambience and spoken words of "Age Is A State Of Mind", to the off-kilter punk-funk of opener "Die Siebzige".

Japan's Ena gets remixed by Ancestral Voices (one half of Akkord) on "9th Divided" which incorporates sombre vibes and exotic percussion and field recordings from the tropics. Ena appears again, remixing DINT's "Visceria", fully deconstructing it on this harshly reduced drum and bass experiment. On the flip the darkness prevails with Synth Sense (Auxiliary/Diode) and their grinding and sludgy slow burning techno mess that is "Corrosion (remix)" and finally ASC's "Loophole" gets taken on a one way ticket to hell and back courtesy of Sam KDC.

Carbone's Cosmo Rhythmatic label, with their work on Conversations Sur Lettres Mortes complemented by a small clutch of remixes. The A-side is taken up by some six tracks from Osborne-Lanthier and Lichtenberger which were apparently generated using a variety of cathode ray television sets and VHS units; the results will please anyone with a keen interest in the aforementioned Raster-Noton or Sahko. Complementing the original music, a mighty line up of Low Jack, Rabit and Gabor Lazer provide B-side remixes - all are as steadfastly experimental as the source material with Rabit's take on "4% (Maurice)" teetering deliciously on the brink of collapse.

Those well versed in the evolving history of IDM will pick out clear Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards of Canada influences, but Hiele is no classic Warp tribute artist. There's a quirky inventiveness about what he does, which can veer from the spacious, beat-less and out there, to skittish and rhythmically dense. Throughout, he never loses sight of the importance of melody, even when he's playing around with twisted acid lines, broken computer style beats, and High Wolf style psychedelics.

Review: Another burst of contemporary-sounding gems from John Carpenter film scores, and this is good news to both the collectors and the sample junkies. On this latest missile we have the famous brooding synths and trite '80s romance of "Assault On Precinct 13", still a much coveted album by the diggers and one that is often heard on the more expansive DJ sets; the B-side is made up of "The Fog", a 1980 piece of history that once again manages to contain a true 80's spirit without the predictability of many sings from that era. Wonderful and, of course, highly recommended.
