Hurry Up Tomorrow
Let's Get Down With The Best
Open Soul
Review: Given his renowned crate-digging credentials, it's little surprise that Floating Points is a big fan of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. The thing is, though, it's a terrific album, as this welcome reissue on the producer's Melodies International imprint proves. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

Too Soon You're Old (4:49)
Lady Day & John Coltrane (3:25)
What's Going On (interlude) (0:45)
Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Scorpio Man Theme (3:58)
Journey To The Bottom (4:28)
Review: Giving Nicole a rare night off, inimitable troupe The Soul Investigators team up with killer flautist Ernie Hawks for two impeccable instrumentals. "Scorpio Man Theme" is all slinky 70s cinematica with a wry nod towards Lalo Schifrin while "Journey To The Bottom" adopts a more languid perspective with slower beats, a smouldering groove and a flute line that takes us right down to the bottom of our souls and right back up again. Beautiful.

Forever (4:14)
Love Has Never Passed Me By (3:30)
Review: SOL Discos present their third reissue with these two songs from Frank Eddie. Originally released on the by Eddie himself, most of the original 1000 pressed copies where abandoned back in South Miami, Florida. Influenced by soul and rock, Frank met with drummer and singer William Hopkins. They created a band together, which at the time, would also jam with people that would later become famous such as Steve Morse (Deep Purple), jazz steel-band player Othello Molineaux and Jaco Pastorius to name a few. Frank & William co-wrote the two songs on this record. They gathered the personnel and recorded it in four days. After unsuccessful meetings with major labels and partly discouraged by the music business, Frank decided to self-release the record on his Insync label. He worked on his own to sell it locally but sadly it didn't meet the audience it deserved. According to William, "The black radio stations would not play it because I did not give them cocaine or money, and the disco clubs had their own list to promote". Today, Frank Eddie is still active by playing American Rhythm & Blues and Jazz in Cuba, as well as supporting the Cuban musicians, bringing instruments to the Caribbean Nation.

Freedom (Unchained mix) (3:55)
Freedom (Mr. Confuse remix) (3:42)
Review: It's been almost four years since we last heard from Anatoly Ice and Dariya, and we were beginning to miss the duo's magnetic waves of seductive nu-soul. Backed by a gentle sway of breakbeats, "Freedom (Unchained)" is the sort of tune that will have cross-cultural appeal, drawing in influences from pop, r&b, and even a little country love. On the flip, Mr Confuse twists the groove up to transform the original into more of a light-hearted house swelter, backed by the original's suave vocals.

Looking Up To You (3:58)
(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Next Time (part 1) (2:47)
Next Time (part 2) (3:01)
Review: For the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions Inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious South Side Chicago songwriter Larry Dixon. Larry's raw songs capture the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. Originally released in 1971, this is said to be, up until now, one very hard to find soul record. Larry Dixon sang with a new group called The Soulful Spades, of the Chicago area. Their first and only recording with Dixon was "Next Time", written by him and Michael Walton in 1970 and featuring Dixon as front man for the group, who had replaced the late R&B Soul singer, John Knight.
