The Champ (2:40)
Sound Of The Witch Doctors (2:51)
Review: Champion sound! Sampled over 500 times but still funkier than a sleepover at Kanye's, The Mohawks "The Champ" enjoys gold status for this limited Record Store Day special. Flip for the instant horn-heaved call to arms "Sound Of The Witchdoctor". Fresh from 68, and still as bewitching... You might call this a magnificent 7" (not sorry)

How Bout Us (feat Steve Spacek - vocal version) (3:44)
How Bout Us (exclusive unreleased instrumental) (4:10)
Review:  The latest single from Mukatsuku is from Australian DJ/Producer Katalyst who was one of the winners at Australian Dance Music Awards in 2002. 'How Bout Us' originally came out as part of the album ''What's Happening ' on Australian label Invada in 2007 before receiving a global CD only release for BBE a year later in 2008 but up till now has never been out as a single in it's own right. The track 'How Bout Us' features vocalist Steve Spacek with an exclusive unreleased instrumental version on the flipside. Killer production with massive string lines and charismatic vocals to ignite your dancefloor. As played by Coldcut,Mr Thing, Skeme Richards , Marcel Vogel,The Herbaliser,DJ Prestige, Boca 45, Smoov,Andre One Of A Kind, DJ Gilla (First Word Records) , Huw72, Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45's), Ben Gibson, etc

The Burg (Pittsburgh PA) (3:31)
Happy Bicentennial USA (3:35)
Review: Larry Grant McGee is little more than a footnote in musical history, releasing the sum total of two seven-inch singles between 1976 and 80. Both, as any serious collector will tell you, are brilliant and - in the case of debut "The Burg (Pittsburgh PA)" - incredibly hard to find. Happily, Dynamite Cuts has given that release a new lease of life thanks to this much-needed reissue. The title track remains a fine slice of hazy, sunshine-friendly West Coast goodness that sits somewhere between Steve Miller Band, Steely Dan and groovy contemporaneous soul, with McGee's glistening jazz guitar solos heightened the baked, loved-up feel. Turn to the flip for "Happy Bicentennial USA", a celebratory tribute to his nation's 200th birthday that's as warm and delicious as they come.

One Step Ahead (2:34)
I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face (2:43)
Review: "One Step Ahead" by American soul singer Aretha Franklin was released by Columbia Records in 1965. The A-side of the single reached the Rhythm & Blues singles chart of the time and ranked at #18. On the flip, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" was taken from her 1964 album entitled Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records. The A side cut was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums and remains one of her rarest releases. The song has risen in familiarity due to its use in recent films, such as the music documentary Muscle Shoals and in the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.

Family (Stereo version) (7:33)
Family (mono version) (7:33)
Review: Despite being something of a confirmed jazz-funk classic, Hubert Laws' "Family" was never released on a 12" single first time around. Curiously, the full version - contained on the A-side of this edition - only ever appeared on the veteran flautist's 1980 album of the same name. It remains, particularly in its original stereo mix form, a superb summer breeze of a jam, with a loved-up female vocal and punchy orchestration riding a sumptuous mid-tempo groove rich in rubbery slap bass and lolloping drumbeats. On the flipside you'll find the more obscure Mono Version, which interestingly feels a little weightier at the bottom end whilst allowing Laws' superb flute solos space to breathe.

Bride Of The Zombie (2:18)
Review: Fly-by-seat-of-pants funk from Parisian instrumental troupe The Mess and fresh new singer Lisa Melissa; Q Sounds drop this ultra-limited three-piece 45" that raw, pacey and straight from the depths of her soul. "Supposed To Be" is driven by an organ-slamming hook and glistening textured guitars, "Distractions" sways with more of a softer, soulful stance that provides stacks of room for Lisa to let her delicate emotions peep through while "Bride Of The Zombie" is a straight-up instrumental blues funk piece from The Mess themselves. Only 200 in print - don't mess around with this one!

Review: Five years after their inaugural Motown compendium, UMC jump aboard the RSD Express with a sophomore set comprising 19 stone cold soul gems. While it features a number of evergreen classics ("Machine Gun" anyone?) there's a strong theme of less obvious tracks from some of Motown's myriad legends. Highlights splashed across these delicious yellow 12s include Kendricks' glock-busting "Keep On Trucking", Stevie's yearning, driving 1967 b-side "Every Time I See You I Go Wild", Puzzle's immense jazz dream-piece "Haiku" and a whole load more.

Come Together (ICR remix) (4:39)
Come Together (4:38)
Review: The Icy City imprint comes roaring through with their second EP to date, an absolutely killer amalgamation of boogie sounds from the warmth and depth of analogue instruments. Reggie Grantham and The New Generation take it back to 1985, bubbling up the airwaves with nothing but raw percussion and steaming basslines, reminding us of the best electro output from the golden era. "Come Together" should surely be seen as a future classic and, of course, as the sort of killer that you keep in the DJ bag at all times! Sensational stuff.

Blow Your Mind (3:56)
Virgin Lion (3:27)
Review: Ivan Makvel and Olli join forces for the first time, laying down two suitably sizzling slammers on a dinky seven-inch single. A-side "Blow Your Mind", a talkbox-sporting P-funk jam that reminded us of early '80s era Roger Troutman releases - all stabbing, kaleidoscopic synth motifs, colourful solos, punchy machine drums and lyrics celebrating "funk" - is particularly special, sounding as it does like a genuine relic of a bygone era. Almost as good is flipside P-funk instrumental "Virgin Lion", which sounds a little like an instrumental revision of the A-side with added flash-funk guitars and D-Train style synth doodles.

Review: Landing in perfect harmony with the warmer months, Roy Ayers' super-seminal 1970 album gets a reissue on limited yellow vinyl. And it's every bit as warm, delicious and essential as you already know it is. From the moment that iconic chant on the opener "Hey, Uh What You Say Come On" builds up right through to the slinky loose funk of "Lonesome Cowboy" fades out, this captures Roy in his most prime and vital. The sparkling drama of "People & The World", the dreamy vibraphone of "The Third Eye" and of course the timeless and massively influential tones of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine"... This album needs to be in every collection in the country. Don't sleep on it.

Review: Since first pitching up on Favorite Recordings a few years back, Russian saxophonist Andre Solomko has delivered a string of impressive albums and singles that gleefully join the dots between smooth jazz, '80s jazz-funk and Afro-fired disco-funk. Le Deltaplane, his latest full-length excursion, explores similar sonic territory, moving from languid, jazz-funk-influenced soul ("Le Deltaplane", featured in both vocal and instrumental versions), to deliciously smooth and glassy-eyed disco-jazz ("Moonbeach Disco"), via a range of sumptuous, solo-heavy workouts that sound like that could have been featured on a sought-after, turn-of-the-'80s jazz-funk obscurity (the wonderfully loved-up "Aquaplane" and "Summer '79"). Throughout, Solomko and company's arrangements and instrumentation are little less than sublime.

Review: Smiling Cis a reissue label focused on obscure 80's and 90's music from around the world. Working closely with the artists to make sure their musical works are presented to listeners in the loveliest way. Here they present a wonderful compilation entitled A Totally New Sound, which showcases the sound of Aset: a collective founded by a group of individuals deeply involved in community improvement initiatives and the struggle for justice and equality. The project links motivated adults with talented young people in the Washington, DC area. Featuring the in-house band members, supporting emerging talents like 11 year old Latonya, singing about divorce, love and dancing on "Eyes Of A Child". The 'poster children' of the project, Treo - a trio of high school girls singing about love and relationships on the neon-lit "Demands Decrease Desire". And of course Whax, the 'strange' high school boys strutting their stuff on the '80s derived swing of "Can I Take You Home?"
