Eclectic Day (9:20)
Smokin' The Roach (6:08)
The Box (5:51)
Review: Horton Jupiter has been skirting around various cosmically-inclined outfits for many years now, but this release marks his first outright solo venture, and where better for it to blast off from than the celestial circus sideshow of Bahnsteig 23? The record launches in a fit of kosmische bravado, all nagging arpeggios, warbling leads, sustained guitars and a healthy dose of drama. "Eclectic Day" is certainly a fitting title. "Smokin' The Roach" is an equally bombastic affair, although with a chirpier disposition and some Italian-sounding vocals, and then "The Box" finishes the EP off with a grungy trip through bongo beatdowns and fuzz guitar for those who like their psych music with a vintage twist.

Suffocation
The Blacksmith
Lose My Rhythm (Scott Fraser remix)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Having first stepped out on Scissor & Thread and Holding Hands, Desert Sound Colony now bring their full-fat, guitartronic sound to Snap, Crackle & Pop. "Lose My Rhythm" is a monster of a track with an acid backbone that would sit right on a Factory Floor release, garnished with garage guitar twang and new wave vocals. "Suffocation" is a more playful jam that doesn't slouch on the production either - DSC straddle song structures and dance dynamics with ease. "The Blacksmith" brings a more bludgeoning, broken rhythmic slant to the group and the impact is just as visceral. Then Scott Fraser steps up to remix "Lose My Rhythm" and turns it into a lithe club track for the late hours when reality has fully slipped away from the floor.

Rausch A (17:08)
Rausch B (13:22)
Rausch C (14:50)
Rausch D (13:44)
Review: Since the release of 2016's epic Gas retrospective, Box, the pioneering drone ambient producer (real name Wolfgang Voigt) has been surprisingly productive. Rausch is the lauded electronic musician's speedy follow-up to last year's Narkopop, which happened to be his first full-length for over 15 years. As you'd expect, Rausch is superb, with Voigt variously turning cinematic orchestral tracks into hybrid electro-acoustic epics. While some are beat-less and fluid, others are loopy, hypnotic and otherworldly, with the German building tension via subtle rhythm tracks that draw on techno and IDM. The results are near faultless, as Voight once again proves that he's a true master of his ambient art.

Review: The Schleissen series stands as one of the finest facets of the ever expanding Emotional Response empire, initially kicking off in 2015 with releases from artists such as Harmonious Thelonious, Abul Mogard, Don't DJ and Sad City. Now the series has been fired up once again with the exotic tones of Tomaga, recently found lurking round the likes of Meakusma and Hands In The Dark. It's an exotic live band sound that touches on Fourth world exploration and motorik drive, but certainly with its own unique slant. The B side of this particular 12" is given over to Neil Tolliday, most commonly found rolling out tech house as Nail and many other names, but here indulging in gorgeous, layered minimal ambient pieces with looping melodic phrases to soothe rather than groove.

Review: Back in 2016 Music From Memory took a deep dive into the archives of obscure British multi-instrumentalist Mike Turtle, resurfacing with a fine double-album of largely previously unheard cuts. Two years on they've taken another stroll through Turtle's well-stocked vault, resulting in another essential collection of quirky cuts. Check, for example, the psychedelic patchwork "Reincarnation", where backwards drums do battle with exotic Indian samples, or the delay-laden, lo-fi synth-pop pulse of "Uiko's Return to Jeka", which boasts strange spoken word vocals from Turtle and South African style juju guitar solos. You'll find these kinds of imaginative experiments throughout; tracks that really shouldn't work, but instead entertain, excite and inspire in equal measure.

Matthewdavid's Mindflight - "Sonos"
HOLOVR - "Horizon Dub"
HOLOVR - "Mind Movement"
HOLOVR - "Mycomorph"
Review: The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.

Black Sun's Demise
Review: Having built its name on various artist releases featuring old and new artists, Contort Yourself is branching out with a new series that focuses on one contemporary act per release. In this instance it's Coletivo Vandalismo getting some much-deserved attention. The Portuguese industrial punk outfit have a visceral sound that favours noise and distortion, but most importantly they know how to wield these sonic tools for maximum impact. The snarl of the synths and the crunch of the drums on "Hostages Of Society" could easily be too much in the wrong hands, but here the errant tones find their own space in the mix, making the impact of the track all the more on-point.

Review: Having taken time out to travel the world and experience new things (including psychedelic substances in California), John Hopkins planned to make Singularity, his ninth album, "a sonic ecosystem that starts and ends on the same note". He soon got frustrated by these limitations, so instead just laid down a fluid and hazy album that combines his usual luscious, ambient electronics with a variety of sparse, heavy and off-kilter rhythms. While undeniably laidback in parts, the album also boasts a number of foreboding techno workouts and uses a wider palette of instrumental sounds than we've come to expect (including some fine strings and his own intricate piano playing). The resultant set is rather impressive, all told, and while not quite a "sonic ecosystem", it's certainly an enjoyable journey.

Find It In Your Eyes (4:31)
Vampirella (3:44)
Review: In typical Music From Memory fashion, their latest archival release shines a light on one of the UK's lesser-known bands of the early 1980s. The System released a lone single in 1981, followed by a now incredibly rare debut album, Logic, in 1983. Three of the cuts here are taken from that set, including the dreamy, downbeat Balearic-pop opener "Almost Grown" - a wonderfully evocative six minutes, all told - and the far-sighted, spacey, proto-techno shuffler "Vampirella". This EP also includes one previously unreleased track, "Find It In Your Eyes", which was rescued from long-forgotten master tapes during the licensing process.

Review: Having distinguished themselves with a series of superb retrospective releases highlighting the work of Leon Lowman, Gigi Masin and Joan Biblioni, Amsterdam label Music From Memory deviate from the path somewhat with his long overdue Gaussian Curve album. Ask yourself what would happen when a elderly Venetian who specialises in sublime ambient music spends a weekend holed up in a Redlight district studio with two of his biggest, most musically gifted fans. The superb Clouds is the answer, with 'Young' Marco Sterk and Jonny Nash following Masin's lead on an eight track exercise in sumptuous, calming composition. The wait has truly been worth it.

Let It Rock! (4:08)
Rio Grande (1:34)
Wild Illusions (3:34)
Review: Early in the year, forthright lo-fi techno experimentalist Delroy Edwards released an eccentric, 22-track, download-only album called Rio Grande. Here, he makes some of the highlights of that set available on vinyl for the very first time. It's an intriguing and largely enjoyable affair throughout, with the sometime L.I.E.S man following the glassy-eyed, recorded-from-the-radio Balearic warmth of "When I Think" with the stripped-back, noise-laden jack-track "Sugar Shack". These kinds of juxtapositions continue throughout, as Edwards flits between sweet and tactile downtempo doodles (see "Rio Grande"), clattering proto jack-tracks ("Let It Rock!") and hissing 1980s deep house bliss (the woozy brilliance of EP closer "Wild Illusions").

The Sun Is High (9:35)
Holland Fly By (6:51)
Without Sound (5:11)
Review: Newcomer Feon up next on Optimo Music, with some some gorgeous and sunkissed balearica. The London based producer wrote these tracks in a brisk 10 day session, shortly after the experience of Ayahuasca ceremony - which is evidenced in the psychedelic sound of the first track. He has explained that the production involved his vocals being layered 30 times in different harmonies, then put through a space echo and you can sure hear it! This one was awesome. On the flip, we have the trance inducing muscle disco of "Holland Fly By" with its super cosmic influences enough to propel your mind into the stratosphere. Finally there's something much more experimental on the solemn, breaks-driven tripper "Without Sound".

Review: Italian synth Goddess, Doris Norton, is nowhere near hyped enough these days. While others get all the praise, the cult producer has pretty much remained on the radars of B-side fanatics and basement-dwelling diggers. However, what she di in the 1980s helped to shape much of the eventual electro and house movement, she was an icon for the italo scene, and it's thanks to her that producers like Legowelt even exist. Bold but true. Norton Computer For Peace is her 1983 LP, and Mannequin has reissued it in spectacular fashion, with the synths sounding as lush and full as on the original, and the ideas being more relevant than ever given the recent resurrection of industrial and electro. There isn't much here which you won't enjoy, and if you're a synth junkie then this must surely be your RSD 2018 stand-out. Recommended!

Review: 34 years after Hiroshi wrote these seven startling compositions for a Tokyo fashion show, they are finally given the vinyl status they've always deserved. Previously only available on cassette, Pier & Loft has become a cult body of work for all ambient fans. Driven, melodic and laced with a sense of energy that the genre often misses. Sci-fi chamber music, if you will, the playful counterpoint between the keys on the brilliantly titled "Wavy-patterned Ice Cream" and the smouldering unwitting proto house dynamics of "The Sea In My Palm" are just two of the many beautiful, timeless highlights.

Saturnus (Ghost Vision Theme) (13:02)
Zuul Passage (11:28)
Review: Given that Ghost Vision is the combined work of Thomas "Cagedbaby" Gandey and Psychemagik man Danny McLewin, you'd expect this 12" - their second in as many weeks following a debut outing on Love on the Rocks - to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with the duo serving up two deliciously epic chunks of kosmiche-inspired hypnotism. A-side "Saturnas (Ghost Vision Theme)" is particularly potent, with exotic synthesizer lines, spacey chords and bubbling TB-303 acid lines gently rising above a chugging, locked-in groove. "Zuul Passage" is an altogether more languid and meandering affair rich in evocative electronics, tear-jerking synthesizer melodies and sparse-but-solid vintage drum machine beats. It's also really rather beautiful.

Review: Lena Platonos, born on the island of Crete in Greece, is simply not revered enough these days, often out of the spotlight. However, those who know, know very well what this musician is all about, and of the dynasty she has left to the wider music scene. The 1980s were hers, with more than ten albums having come out in quick succession, before being lost in the depths of the second-hand market; 1986's Lepidoptera, which Dark Entries have reissued wonderfully, is one of her very best works. Irrefutably non-genre and non-wave, this quirky collection of electronic shapes and improvisational ideas hasn't aged a day in 32 years, and there is nothing to suggest that similar sorts of musicians have pushed the boundaries any further. Balanced between exotica and electronica, this is pure Greek music with a twist. Moody, sensual and deeply enriching, this is an album for the ages. Recommended!

Quite simply, the Ozzie experimenter is an innovator and a shining light for the progression of electronic music into the next decade. No hype. Everything that this man has releases recently has left us wanting more, and this is thanks to the diversity of his ideas and skills, often blending different or even opposing sounds with beautiful results. This latest album for Melodies Souterraines, O/P, is a cocktail of electronics, whether dubwise, tech-centric, or utterly bleeped-out, and the result is a new and exciting sound that is still finding its concrete shape. Review: An adventure through time and space from Gravity Graffiti label boss Riccardo Schiro aka Maladetti/Richeart. This is his second appearance on the label thus far. Slo-mo shamanic techno and tribal trance awaits listeners on the Dunas EP. This will no doubt appeal to fans of early Plastikman circa "Afrika", natural/electronic system or Refracted. Italians in particular have a real knack for this style of techno, following in the footsteps of legends such as Donato Dozzy, Neel and Nuel. Go deep into the exotic with the polyrhythmic hypnotica of "Esoterico" or "Trans-Garde" but there's also a couple of delightful curveballs in here. The frenetic acid electro monster "Essoterica" had us excited, as well as the tripped-out ambient dub excursion "Lapis Lazuli" which closes out this fine EP in great style.

Review: Canadian label Seance Center (run by former Invisible City Editions co-founder Brandon Hocura) presents an album by acupressure expert and electronic composer Sam McClellan. Music of the Five Elements is 'a work of perfectly tuned healing music', by way of minimalism, American primitive guitar and psychedelia. On the album, McClellan provides voice, synthesizer, guitar, bowed bass, piano, effects and Chinese flute: all played by himself. Of the album, McClellan himself stated that the optimum effect of the album is achieved if each side of the recording is played through in its entirety, without interruption. Moreover, it should be used as a meditational or body work tool, rather than entertainment, and will increase in effect over time. However, overplaying or improper use may eventually diminish its designed effect. Re-mixed and mastered from the original master reels.
