Review: Second time around for Icelandic neo-classical composer Olafur Arnalds' 2018 album "Re:Member". This version, pressed for Record Store Day 2019, boasts a fine bonus 7" containing strings-only re-recordings of three original album tracks ("Saman", "Momentary" and "Nyepi"). These are superb and genuinely compliment the original 12-track set, which was produced using specially created software capable of triggering new musical sequences on "two pianos chained to his primary instrument". This cutting-edge approach, combined with live percussion and the multi-instrumentalist's own considered electronics, resulted in an album that remains thoughtful, mesmerizing and entertaining in equal measure.

Track 1 (24:49)
Track 2 (24:28)
Review: Acclaimed Finnish experimental label Sahko tends to be rather matter-or-fact about its releases, shying away from hype in order to let the music do the talking. They seem to be taking that approach to the extreme on "Sahko 30", an album of ghostly, slowly evolving ambience that arrives with no artist, title or track credits. The two long, lingering tracks evoke mental images of icy, windswept isolation with just the sound of creaking glaciers and a crackling shortwave radio for company. It's evocative, enjoyable stuff - once you navigate an extended opening blast of radio static that kicks off the A-side - and is apparently the work of "an experimental artist who wishes to stay anonymous". We may never know their identity, but it's safe to say the music on "Sahko 30" should last the test of time.

Review: "Nothing Is Objective" is Spanish ambient and new age veteran Suso Saiz's second album of new material for esteemed Dutch imprint Music From Memory. It's every bit as beguiling as his previous outing, 2017's "Rainworks", though it does feel a little richer, warmer and more humid. At 16 tracks deep, it's something of an epic, with Saiz exploring a range of musical moods with the aid of undulating electronics, ethereal chords, meandering melodies, chiming sounds, droning aural textures and occasional sun-bright instrumentation. There are far too many highlights to mention, but we're particularly enjoying the loopy hypnotism of "Mexican Bells (For Jorge Reyes)", the delay-laden guitars of "Minimal Distance", the slowly unfurling movements of "Frogs In Love" and the Pat Metheny style positivity of "Meccano".

Evant Horizon (3:42)
Review: While many of Slow Life's releases have been firmly focused on the dancefloor, there's enough variety in the label's wholeheartedly electronic output to suggest that this undoubtedly laidback and spacey album is not too much of a curveball. Crucially, it's really rather good, suggesting that debutant duo Asyncronous has a big future ahead. Musically, it's like an echo of the early 1990s, with the Ukrainian production pair offering up tracks that variously touch on heavyweight ambient dub, Pete Namlook style becalmed soundscapes, the melodious IDM bliss of Boards of Canada, the "Artificial Intelligence"-era twinkle of Black Dog and the shimmering futurist synth-scapes of Tangerine Dream.

The Park (21:27)
The Backyard (23:57)
Review: The illustrious and complex catalogue of Robert Ashley is a many-sided dice with all kinds of points of entry. Fortunately reissue culture sees some of the most significant highlights coming to the fore, guiding you into the world of this visionary artist. "Private Parts" was Ashley's second studio album, preceding his widely hailed classic "Automatic Writing". It's made up of two long form pieces centred on Ashley's freestyle poetry, with a backdrop of synths and tabla creating a comfortable bed for his thought-provoking words. "The Park" is the more melodious, soothing creation, but the words drill in deeper over the rhythmic focus of "The Backyard." Either way, a landmark piece of work from a truly singular artist - to think it was originally released in 1978...

A Rainbow In Curved Air (18:41)
Poppy Nogood & The Phantom Band (21:18)
Review: Originally released way back in 1969, Terry Riley's "A Rainbow In Curved Air" album remains one of the minimal maestro's most significant works. Crafted using overdubbing techniques, the three-movement title track features Riley playing layer upon layer of electric organ and electric Harpsichord motifs to create a hypnotic, Indian style raga. It was hugely influential at the time - inside and outside of the emerging minimalism scene - and later influenced the ambient and ambient house movements. Here it gets the audiophile reissue treatment, with the title track once again being joined by original flipside "Poppy Nogood & The Phantom Band" - a trippy wig-out in which Riley pays tribute to soprano saxophonist John Coltrane over more hypnotic, fast-past organ refrains.

Review: More posthumous work by the legendary Mitar Subotic aka Suba. He was a Serbian-born musician and composer, set to become one of Brazil's most prominent producers until his untimely passing (in 1999, at only 38 years of age) when his studio in Sao Paulo caught fire. Offen Music have already released two albums by Subotic - under his other well known Rex Ilusivii moniker, but Wayang proves most interesting in that the latin polyrhythms that comprised the bulk of this alias are not featured on the album, as it explores lush ambient and electronic soundscapes instead. The album was said to be conducted in 1995, just shortly after Subotic produced an album together with his old Yugoslavian friend Milan Mladenovic under the project name Angel's Breath.

Review: Austin-based artist Justin Sweatt is primarily known for his Xander Harris project in which he gleefully joins the dots between Italo-disco, electro, synth-pop and contemporary psychedelia. "Say Your Goodbyes", Sweatt's first excursion under his given name, takes a different approach, offering up a range of atmospheric, slow-burn tracks that mix and match elements of ambient, IDM, Americana (see the wonderful "Booze Clues") and synth-wave. It's a mostly becalmed and beautiful affair, with highlights including the slowly shifting shuffle of "Chasing Paper", the evocative and melancholic "Hello, Lonesome" and the deep space drift of "Taper". Sweatt has made some fine records over the years but "Say Your Goodbyes" could genuinely be his finest moment to date - it's certainly a superb album.
