Look Around The Corner
Look Around The Corner (instrumental)
Review: Look Around The Corner sees two of Tru Thoughts most successful artists reunite in the shape of Will Quantic Holland and Alice Russell. When the two have previously collaborated, the results have mostly been dipped in magic and lovingly various - compare the heaving funk of "Pushin On" with the more delicate "Sweet Calling". "Look Around The Corner" is the title track from the album of the same name, and it unfurls into a delightfully soulful flutter of instrumentation delivered by Quantic's world-renowned outfit the Combo Barbaro. It can't help but recall The Rotary Connection and the whole track is lifted beyond the clouds by Russell's immediately distinctive voice.

What's Going On
Review: Always a destination label for fans of classy disco and funk edits, GAMM introduced The Reflex to their roster with these new additions to their "ReVisions" series. Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain" gets a subtle boost to the beats and bottom end, while on a similar Northern Soul vibe, The Reflex treats "Rehab" with a new set of drums and a few added strings and stiff guitar chanks. Best of all, the beatless instrumental of Marvin's seminal "What's Going On" is reconnected with the original acapella in a superbly tasteful mixdown that shows off every nuance of that incredible recording.

Battle (part 1)
Battle (part 2)
Review: Fly Girl/Fly Boy anthem alert as German funk outfit The Mighty Mocambos team up with legendary US producer Afrika Bambaataa. Assisted by vocalists Charlie Funk and King Kamonzi for French label Favourite Recordings, it's a modern day b-boy wet dream as a dedication to universal hip-hop and funk culture whilst emulating the vibe of a NY block party with that breakbeat punch. And there's an exclusive instrumental on the flipside: nothing less than essential.

Gregory Moore
Review: A deserved repress - this time on 7" - for a record that first turned up on Jazzman's Soul Spectrum label four years ago. Repackaged this time as a dinked 45, it's a glorious journey of rare, jazz tinged modern soul that has crossover appeal with the funk and disco heads too. A classic vocal rides over a driving groove, killer rhythm section and that infectious, repetitive brass section with effortless aplomb. Only 500 copies were pressed and we're tipping them to be sold out for good within a week. Don't sleep!

Get Down
Review: You've got to hand it to Jazzman Records; their dedication to unearthing and releasing killer funk and jazz is simply unsurpassed. With this issue of Barbados group The Blue Rhythm Combo, the label plucks selective album and singles tracks for a triple pack vinyl edition that introduces our ears to rare Caribbean funk gems infused with tropical tight rhythms, fatback drums, heavy bass and punchy brass stabs. There are dope jams galore, most notably a superb version of "Black Water Gold" penned by Louis Villery and made famous by Africa Music Machine back in 1973. A mixed bag of instrumental and vocal tracks and an essential purchase if you have a healthy interest in funk.

The Shakedown (Say Yeah)
Dragging Me Down
Review: After releases on a dozen labels, one of Britain's finest funk groups Speedometer unleash their new single "The Shakedown(Say Yeah)" on Freestyle. Their current vocalist is none other than the legendary Martha High, a long time vocalist with James Brown until 1995 when she left to tour globally with James's sax player Maceo Parker. Does it hit all the right spots? Does it tick all the boxes? Hell yeah! Martha is firing on all four cylinders, ably assisted by UK soul man Myles Sanko whilst a killer guitar licked, punchy brass groove carries things on at a furious pace. "Dragging Me Down" on the flip sports a crystal clear performance from Martha as the band cook the bubbling organ tempo on gas mark 10; oven gloves at the ready people.

Every Whicha Kinda Way
Daddy Laddy
Review: Two great choons reissued on Jazzman's Popcorn sub label. Both are blues infused R&B (R&B as in Rhythm & Blues; we're not talking Rihanna here!) which were both originally recorded in New York for the American King label. "Every Which Kinda Way" has a thumping double bass, great backing vocals and a snappy hand clapping rhythm offset by a tenor sax solo. On the flip "Daddy Laddy" is more of the same with piano tinkled keys, swinging double bass, sleazy sax and an upfront male vocal. Recommended.

The Preacher
Get Your Point Over
Review: Apart from Osaka Monaurail, who are now signed to German label Unique Records, one of the most prolific modern bands on the Japanese funk scene is six piece outfit Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, who, after yet another successful full national tour of Australia, have just released two new limited edition singles which have already sold out on their release date in Japan! Luckily, we managed to grab a handful before they all vanished. This single contains one exclusive track ("The Preacher") flipped by "Get Your Point Over", which will feature on the forthcoming Taking A Lesson From The Past album. What you get are two tight instrumentals with swirling organs and breakbeat heavy drums ably assisted by fantastic, note perfect brass parts. Juno is one of the few stores outside of Japan to carry these 45s so you know what you gotta do!

Take The Funky Feeling
Black Water Gold
Review: This is the second 7" from Barbados group The Blue Rhythm Combo to be reissued in the past couple of weeks. The first was of course the voluptuous triple 45 wax job from UK label Jazzman, and now we see this tasty little 45 from Germany's finest funk label Tramp Records. This double A Sider has possibly the best tracks from the band in ''Take The Funky Feeling'' flipped by a version of Louis Villery's penned ultimate funk classic "Black Water Gold". For admirers of the tropical side of funk related gems this is nothing short of essential.

I'm In Love (part 1 - instrumental)
I'm In Love (part 2 - instrumental)
Review: A lovely new 45 from Detroit funk/hip-hop label Funk Night Records .Rickey Calloway started his music career at the tender age of 13, clowning around in rest periods doing James Brown imitations. It's with the spirit of Brown's backing band The JB's that the Daptone label's house band, The Dap Kings, turn Rickey's vocal track original into a groove led funk set of instrumentals. This version is heavy on the guitar licks with smatterings of bongo percussion, smouldering Hammond organ and punchy brass stabs without the confines of vocals. Highly recommended.

Review: Although not a name with which most listeners will be familiar, the Lijadu Sisters were one of Nigeria's top musical exports in the 1970s. Inspired just as much by American soul as native styles such as afrobeat, highlife and juju, the identical twins delivered four knockout albums of joyful musical fusion throughout the 1970s. This first retrospective from Soul Jazz Records showcases the best material from those albums, mixing up low-slung, chant-heavy percussion workouts (the brilliant "Osupa") and horn-heavy afro-jams ("Sunshine"), with Pointer Sisters-ish groovers ("Life Is Gone Down Low") and frantic dancefloor business ("Come & Dance"). Deluxe packaging as usual from Soul Jazz - essential!

Saving My Love
Review: Goosepimples aplenty as Kent Records pulls out its ace card with a superb slice of feel good classic soul music from Darondo. Darondo, who was bought up in the San Franciso Bay area, led a colourful life, becoming a Pimp in the 1960s. He eventually gave that up and knocked out this wonderful piece of guitar balladry. Underneath a sublime Al Green/Curtis Mayfield like vocal performance you'll discover a simple string arrangement that compliments Darondo's falsetto vocal to brilliant effect. No doubt this will feature as one of the best 45 soul reissues of 2012.
