Review: Koichi Sakai has been immersed in Afrobeat culture for a long time, not least working closely with Dele Sosimi since 2008 as a resident DJ. Now Sakai is making decisive moves into recording work, partnering up with Afla Sackey to follow up on last year's "Wono EP" with a full album of globe-spanning sounds that celebrate the spirit and groove of original Afrobeat without simply trying to reproduce it. The moods and imagination has no restrictions on this richly expressive record, where threads of house music, Latin, Japanese and so much more can be sensed pulsing through this wholly smooth and soulful stew. It's another big win for emergent London label Olindo, and a surefooted step forward for Sakai and Sackey.

Review: The latest reissue on Rush Hour offshoot New Dawn is of an album which holds great significance to the people of Guinea-Bissau. When it was recorded in 1982 by local musician Ze Manel and backing band 2M GB, the album's release was apparently a "national event". The songs are still popular in the tiny West African nation today, which goes some way to telling you how good they are. The album itself is hugely vibrant, offering a tropical, humid and bright-eyed fusion of glistening guitars, snaking sax solos, ear-pleasing vocals and danceable grooves that draw influence from both local drum rhythms and American soul. It's the sort of album that will put a smile on your face, and in these troubled times we can't think of any greater praise than that.

El Buho & Rumbo Tumba - "Gaviota" (4:43)
Review: Over the last few years, El Buho has become one of Wonderwheel's most reliable artists. "Ramas", a collaborative set that sees him join forces with like-minded producers and musicians from around the world, sees him return to Nickodemus' imprint with his first studio album for two years. In keeping with much of his catalogue, the collective collaborative tracks fuse a mixture of downtempo grooves, Latin beats and tropical rhythms with folksy instrumentation, picturesque vocals, humid electronics and subtle nods to a myriad of interconnected downtempo styles. The results are largely hugely enjoyable, with our favourites including the dubby Afro-Cuban shuffle of "Cancuban" (with M Rux), the gorgeously wide-eyed and sun-soaked Baiuca hook-up "A Minha Fraga" and the soft-focus shuffle of "Kuuma" (with QOSQI).

Review: Brighton based record label, publishers, cinematographers and legendary former London record store Mr Bongo present the first installment in their new 'Mr Bongo Record Club' compilation series. It features, in their words "a selection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities, which form the basis of our DJ sets and our radio show of the same name." There really is some great music on here that has been sourced from all corners of the globe and as much as they're oldies: they certainly are goodies. Our favourites weren't limited to: Brazilian duo Lemos E Debetio's charming "Morro Do Barraco Sem Agua", the African funk explosion of Lantei's "Fish & Funjee (Komi Ke Kenam)" and some truly hot reggae vibes in the form of Big Youth's 1977 unclassic "Mammy Hot Daddy Cool" among many others on this fine compilation.

Canette (3:38)
Requiem (3:36)
Review: Two years ago, French Cameroonian vocalist Pat Kalla joined forces with Lyon-based band Le Super Mojo and Favorite Recordings producer Bruno Hovart to record and release an album of impressive Afro-disco and Afro-soul treats. We're not sure whether Hovart was behind the desk for this two-track return to action, but it certainly sounds that way. A-side "Canette" is simply delightful: a summery celebration that sees Kalla's sweet and soulful vocals rise above a jaunty backing track that sits somewhere between Afro-soul, Afro-boogie, highlife and "Get Lucky" era Daft Punk. Flipside "Requiem" is a more up-tempo affair in which Kalla sings in both French and English above a killer Afro-beat groove with added Afro-funk flourishes.

Moerarie Morei Atjara (version) (3:59)
Moerarie Morei Atjara (instrumental) (3:33)
Review: While it may look and sound decidedly vintage, this collaboration between veteran Surinamese musician A Bechan and Music With Soul founder Alex Figueira is in fact brand spanking new. In its' A-side "Version" mix form, "Moerarie Morei Atjara" brilliantly joins the dots between Surinamese "Hindostan" music (a style developed by the country's Indian community over decades) and the sweaty tropical rhythms of Cumbia. It's terrific stuff all told, with Bechan's ear-catching Hindu language vocals riding killer South American rhythms, jaunty bass and equally jumpy accordion motifs. Those accordions come to the fore on the flipside instrumental take, which also includes some seriously spacey Juno-60 synthesizer lines. Recommended.

Review: First released in 1966, "Braziliance!" was the album that introduced Marcos Valle to an international audience. It was heavily marketed in the United States and Europe during the bossanova craze, with Warner Brothers Records touting the composer/arranger/vocalist as Brazil's next musical megastar. As this Mr Bongo reissue proves, the album remains something of a sun-kissed classic. It features a mix of big band bossanova, infectious batacuda rhythms, summery samba workouts, Afro-Latin jazz cuts and the kind of heavily orchestrated easy listening fare that sample spotters have always enjoyed. It's a snapshot of the swinging sixties, Brazilian style, and there's no greater sound than that.

Review: Amongst highlife enthusiasts, Nkem Njoku & Ozzobia Sound's sole album is regarded as something of a classic, not least because of its party-friendly take on "Igbo highlife", a sub-genre of the Ghanaian style that utilises traditional Ogene 6/8 bell rhythms. The album's six tracks are infectious and wholeheartedly positive, with the assembled band - which included John Kante on guitar, a full horn section of boogie-era highlife keyboard maestro Jake Sollo - delivering instrumental backing tracks that ripple with colourful motifs, killer grooves and more than a hint of gospel righteousness. The title is certainly fitting, because it's a very special album indeed.
