Juno Recommends Funky House September 2021

Review: The Cape Verdean model, singer, DJ, artist and philanthropist Anane is up next on esteemed New York City label Nervous with 'Tell Me That I'm Dreaming' which is remixed by her husband (and partner in Elements Of Life) Lil Louie Vega. He injects the track with some late night boogie-down action which accompanies her fabulous vocals just perfectly. The same quality you've come to expect from one half of Masters At Work. Over on the flip, veteran British producer Dave Lee's Disco Not Disco club No Drop is ultra smooth and as low-slung as you like it. The man has the midas touch, what more can we say.

Review: Mike Dunn's first album since 1990, 2019's "My House From All Angles", was awash with high-grade Chicago jack-tracks, proper acid workouts and bouncy late-night house. It's one of the latter tracks, the superb "If I Can't Get Down", that's given the remix treatment here. German veteran Mousse T expertly re-invents the track as a squelchy fusion of hip-house and disco-house, while Oliver Dollar tips a wink to Classic's boompty past via a rework that sounds like vintage mid-noughties Derrick Carter. Over on the flip Luke Soloman delivers a low-slung house version that cheekily samples Modern Romance's dub disco classic "Salsa Rhapsody", before Snips Broken Sweet re-imagines Dunn's house workout as a jazzy bruk-up number. As good a set of remixes as we've heard in ages - don't sleep!

Review: The inimitable Masters At Work have been at the top of their game for 30 years. Louis Vegas seems as prolific as ever and Kenny Dope remains a towering figure and together they have cooked up another killer house tune here for 2021. It is their first in two decades and though it bares all the hallmarks of the iconic duo's house sound, it also brings some newness. There is plenty of militant drum work and silvery tech house drum designs to 'Mattel' as well as a dark and marching baseline. The Kenlou dub strips it back to and even more late night and menacing sound with turbulent synth designs and the beats version is for tricky DJs.

Review: The final release on Midland's ReGraded label culminates with the release of the double A side by Philadelphia-based artist Elvin T, who follows up a great track not long ago on Cosmic Incantations last month. Both tracks were staples in the label boss' sets for the last three years: the low slung boogie-down vibe on the disco inferno of 'Get Close' while the deep and sensual mood music 'Pressure of Desire' has a certain atmosphere reminiscent of legend Kenny Dixon Jr.'s work - really digging this one!

Review: French Pedro Winter aka Busy P is the former manager of Daft Punk, current manager of Justice and many other electro acts, label head at Ed Banger and still active producer. Here he presents his first new music under this moniker in some four years over a pair of 12"s. The first one, 'Track Of Time' is made with the talents of Haich Ber Na and Shay Lia. It is a prime electro house cut of the sort he has dealt in his whole career. Boosting the package are three remixes courtesy of the legendary Masters At Work aka Kenny Dope and Louis Vega.
