Reef
111
Review: Ibiza based imprint Fathers & Sons brings back label boss Julian Perez to deliver the second installment in his FAS007 series, serving up two tracks that highlight the ever deepening sound of the producer. "Reef" is a taut and muscular tech house cut that packs a touch of New Jersey swing but decorates it with immersive dub styles that send it to a more contemplative headspace, and the results are a club ready workhorse that punches in all the right places. "111" is a more daring affair that spends a great deal of time in a fragmented found sound space before the argpeggiated bass line propels the track towards a floor-ready structure.

Conjure Balearia
Conjure Drama
Conjure Bass
Review: It's been a while since Barcelona's most famous adopted Texan son Maceo Plex graced us with some solo material on his own Ellum Audio, instead electing to perform a fine curatorial role overseeing releases from Good Guy Mikesh, Jay Dee, Danny Daze and TV Baby. Plex fanatics will be pleased as punch to see the Conjure One 12" with the producer adopting a slightly conceptual tone across the three productions. Notions of Bass, Drama and Balearia are broached on the triplet of Plex productions, with "Conjure Balearia" leaning on a naggingly familiar sample. Of course the moment the funk snaps into groove on the track is a perfect example of why Maceo is so popular!

Requiem
Mongol
Ankaris
Review: Returning with his second EP after debuting on Innervisions last year, Lithuanian producer Mario Basanov's Ten Walls project certainly shares headspace with the likes of Ame and Dixon, working brooding tones and dramatic chord progressions into his finely balanced tech house. The title track is more minimal in its delivery, certainly in the rhythm section, but its offset by a bombastic tuba bass line that fills in the gaps with style. "Mongol" is a more ranging affair with some melodic percussion and a wider sound palette that heads into more open territory, which was undoubtedly the intention if the title is anything to go by. "Ankaris" meanwhile strips everything back down again and gets into an edgy progression steeped in carefully orchestrated tension.

Makossa Suspens (Pilooski edit)
Review: The Cubo Rhythm Trax 12? sees the Versatile stalwart end nearly two years of radio silence in style, with inspiration coming from Jive Rhythm Trax's Volume 2, an eight-track tape of electro first released in 1989. Named after their BPMs like the original, I:Cube's techno-take on these retro productions also come with a throbbing Pilooski edit of "Makossa Suspens" taken from the producer's "M" Megamix album from 2012, which although unrelated to Jive, provides a complimenting bonus to two jangly, metallic, tribal drum tracks.

Beginning An Ending
Beginning An Ending (Baby Ford remix)
Review: As Assemble continues to deliver the kind of minimal techno that got people into it in the first place, so Daze Maxim steps up to this remit with a distinctive offering that shows off his skills and imagination while injecting some energy into the re-emergent scene. "Beginning An Ending" has some off-kilter chords that punch out of the track to great effect, giving the alien drum set and bubbly bassline a sense of purpose that makes for a distinctive and slightly unhinged dancefloor cut. Baby Ford turns out a remix that smooths out those rambunctious elements with elegant pad lines, hypnotic repetition and the kind of seductive nocturnal atmosphere that only he can create.

Review: As the title would suggest, this double pack monster from Roger Gerressen and Ivano Tetelepta is forged from digging through dusty records to create a spotters delight of beat constructions to make DJ Shadow blush. While the pair's grounding in house and techno shines through, not to mention Nilla's role as an All Inn offshoot, the real informer here is hip hop, as titles such as "Kool As Keith" attest. Throughout there's a tone of smoky, late-night ambience which lends itself perfectly to this kind of project, but it still kicks when it wants to. The title track surges forth on a limber break while "Mambo Town" shimmies with resurrected energy. There are plenty of mellow moments to be enjoyed as well, so if you like your beats outsourced then get on this sizable package.

Mind Methods (Dilated Pupils remix)
Review: Restraint is the name of the game on the first entry into Moral Fiber's vinyl series, which sees Romanian duo Vinyl Speed Adjust show just how little is needed to get the floors of Bucharest moving. "Semne" features a broken beat typical of the sound coming out of this corner of Eastern Europe, cyclical in nature and utterly refined in its pattering delivery. "Light Years" is equally stripped down, although the drums push out from the track with a more angular formation, while "Mind Methods" heads in the opposite direction for an even more minimalistic mantra made of the tiniest percussive sounds. Dilated Pupils does little to fill the track out with a remix that doffs its cap to the wispy quality of its source.

Samsara (Laurine Frost rework) (10:41)
Planete Alpha (3:30)
Review: Marking the second installment on the emerging Soul.On label, Ztrl is himself on a voyage of discovery as he turns out his second vinyl release with a leaning towards the minimal end of the spectrum. "Alive" is bubbling with ethnic percussion and a sparse sound palette that exudes patience and purpose through every bar. "Samsara" breaks away from the more rigid structure of the previous track with a loping construction made up of brittle drums falling in a lackadaisical fashion. Laurine Frost remixes the second track by paring everything down to a measured pulse decorated with the sound of distant voices trapped in the groove that makes for a positively earthy experience compared to the alien liquid of Ztrl's closing effort "Planete Alpha".

Le Vicieu
Colle De La Bonette
Review: Sammy Dee's Ultrastretch label is an infrequent concern, demonstrated by the fact their first release of 2014 is only the fifth release in four years. It also represents the Ultrastretch debut of Monsieur Georget, a gentleman of possibly Gallic persuasion whose passions apparently include "his bicycle, Vin Rouge and analogue hardware". Followers of Le Loup and Seuil's Hold Youth label will be familiar with Monsieur Georget's talents with analogue hardware, having surfaced on the label last year and his second release on Ultrastretch offers more of his brand of wonderfully elastic house music. A-side "Le Vicieu" is classically framed minimal house, all deep bass growls, expansive rhythms and a real sense of space, whilst "Colle de la Bonette" demonstrates le Monsieur is eminently capable of crafting something stranger and more psychedelically charged.

Ys
Are We (feat Egle Sirvydyte)
Apnea
Review: Lithuanian producer Mindaugas Lapinskis, also to be found moonlighting in Downtown Party Network, debuts a new solo project here and scores a vinyl release on Maceo Plex's imprint as a strong start to Gardens Of God. Ys is steeped in melancholic drama conveyed through warm, full-bodied synths, taking the blueprint laid out by the likes of the Innervisions stable to the next level. The title track lays out its features with poise, lilting between peaks of chords and swells with the most delicately placed drum beats nudging the tidal tech house along. "Are We" follows a similar musical path, although it is embellished by the vocal tones of Egle Sirvydyte, while "Apnea" takes a sunnier tact with the emotive notes it reaches for.

Trace (Grain remix)
For (Yacht) Club Only (Leon Vynehall remix)
Review: Offering up the cuts from his last release for Aus to go under the knife, Midland gets the remix treatment with two distinct results. First up Grain gets into a rolling tribal state of mind with a version of "Trace" honed for peak time dancefloor consumption. The drums fall in a circular pattern while insistent snippets from the track accentuate the functional abandon of this decidedly driving piece. Leon Vynehall meanwhile strings "For (Yacht) Club Only" up with a bugging backbone and heartfelt stabs that fall into a modern meltdown of future-minded house music for body-jerking physical responses.

Modular One - "Quasar"
Johannes Volk - "Stream"
Marco Zenker - "Second Flight"
Sharif Anderson - "Future Acid Test"
Review: As well as being a reliable outlet for the refined works of label owner Patrice Scott, Sistrum occasionally dabble in the art of the V/A split releases and they are consistently as on point. This four pronged Genesis Tracks 12" is a case in point, featuring the collective talents of Modular One, Johannes Volk, Marco Zenker and Sharif Anderson. Listening to lead track "Quasar" from Modular One, it's easy to see why Scott was drawn to this apparent newcomer, the production filled with the kind of deepness and purity of sound you expect from the Detroit producer himself. Having remixed Scott for Sistrum back in 2011, Johannes Volk makes his debut proper with the dubby yet elastic sounding "Stream" whilst "Second Flight" from Marco Zenker could pass for a NWAQ jam! Another newcomer rounds out Genesis Tracks in style with "Future Acid Test" from Sharif Anderson wedged neatly between the functional and the psychedelic.

Master
Servant
Review: Joakim's vinyl only Crowdspacer label may have launched in headline-grabbing fashion with a collaborative 12" release featuring Jam City and Kindness, but it's subsequently settled into a low-key groove that has suited its output. Crowdspacer 12"s from Yes Wizard, Cray 76 and POV have been geared for the club not the content farm and it's been nice to see the label develop away from the spotlight. Master & Servant, the latest Crowdspacer record sees Cray76 return - speculation is it's the work of Mr Bazooka himself, we couldn't possibly say - and it contains two further melodic tools for the more discerning selectors out there, with "Servant" as good as anything that's been released on Tigersushi.

Prisma
Review: The label arm of multi-faceted collective Moreaboutmusic returns with its first release of 2014, the Prisma EP from Italian duo Rio Padice and Massimo De Lena. Ever the winning combination, you know what to expect from these founding members of the Early Sounds label; raw house and techno music that touches the soul as well as the feet. There's a subtle sweetness deep in opening track "Huge N Net" apparent in the intermittent dolphin-esque warbling and glistening chords that acts as a neat foil to the toughness of the groove. "Lost Ones" will probably be the cut that DJs return to, and is a highlight of this release along with the crunchy delight that is "Note Ignote".

Review: The Achterbahn D'Amour pairing of Johannes "Iron Curtis" Paluka and Jurgen "Jool" Albert (formerly Edit Piafra) return to the Acid Test series with a debut album Odd Movements. Since the project first emerged on Absurd's dedicated acid offshoot in 2011, Achterbahn D'Amour have become mainstays of the series and encapsulated the experimental ethos of the series and displayed a true reverence for the classic 303 and 606 Roland machines. After a relatively low key 2013 with just the two Acid Test releases from regular contributor Tin Man and famed Frenchman Pepe Bradock, Odd Movements is a statement of intent and sits nicely alongside the other Acid Test long players from Recondite and Tin Man whilst demonstrating the format suits Albert and Pakula well.

Xanex (Tuff City Kids remix)
Xanex (Roman Fluegel remix)
Review: Turning to the opening track from her recent Dimension D long player for Visionquest, Dinky gets the brooding romance of her original track reworked by a highly sought after pair of producers, taking the warm chords and bewitching vocals in two distinct directions. Tuff City Kids get the 303 involved for their interpretation, injecting some peak time urgency into the track with plenty of choice drum machine moves and mutated vocals to boot. Roman Flugel heads the other way with a pared down abstraction that lets curious touches of synth dart around in a playful but melancholic alternative to the direct impact of the other two versions.

Total Order Of Being
Future Beacon
Dowlais Wheelie Crew
Rite Of Pant
Review: It's rather rare to see Wesley Matsell turning out a release, having only managed two previous EPs since 2008, one for Studio Barnhus and the other for Border Community who he returns to here. As you might expect from such an association, synths are the order of the day and in keeping with James Holden's interest in dirty distorting sounds there are plenty of red-lining moments in amongst the full-bodied melodies that drive this record. The lead track is a dazzling medley of raw bleeps, synthesised voices and rough drums that move between shuffle and staccato with glee, making for a slippery track to get a rhythmic handle on. "Future Beacon" has a more steady breakbeat roll to it, while the arpeggios twinkle effervescently. "Dowlais Wheelie Crew" marginally reins the raucous synths in with a more focused house burner, leaving it to "Rite Of Pant" to provide an oddly Balearic finishing move that flails in the distant haze of its production.

Your Electronic Arms (original mix)
Review: Catenaccio boss Benjamin Fehr has long been serving up his oddball minimal style to the likes of Lomidhigh and Broquade, but now he is doing his thing for Grow Vinyl, channeling his pared down approach into exciting sound sources that make for fiery results. The title track has a wealth of theremin-esque noodling going on over the top of a solid bassline and slender beat, while plenty more kooky samples zip around the mix at the same time to the delight of your ears. Isherwood delivers a dense and twitchy re-rub of the track that has its own spooky, if more streamlined, charm. "Your Electronic Arms" is a gutsy offering from Fehr that steals the show on the B2, letting live drum percussion and a powerful sense of movement guide the dark and deranged arrangement forwards.
