Some Lights (5:44)
Skulls (6:58)
Professor Grasstov (5:20)
Review: Israeli duo Red Axes have been bringing plenty of psychedelic colours and rugged guitar texture to dance music since they first emerged. After outings on various acclaimed labels, they now find themselves on Erol Alkan's always diverse Phantasy Sound. 'Some Lights' is an old school rave tune of the sort you might hear at sun up the day after. 'Skulls' is a hyper-speed synth and drum workout that is so tightly woven together you will disappear into the annals of your own mind trying to keep up, and 'Professor Grasstov' closes out in manic fashion with drilling bass, squirrelling synths and a playful sense of neon colour that is sure to make this one anthemic.

Fizz City (5:18)
Fourth Dimensional (5:03)
Micro 8's (5:04)
Review: You can always rely on Blawan to deliver the brutalist techno goods and that's exactly what he does here. This new double 12" on Ternesc opens with UK funky drums and wild percussive patterns as well as some signature mangled voices. There is also hyper speed industrial minimalism on 'The Sithe' that captures the sound of a factory in meltdown, spangled synths and eerie dub atmospheres on 'Silver' and unrelenting rave techno on 'Fizz City.' Add in two more hard to define fusions of mutant sound design, busted rhythms and dystopian moods and you have a spell binding EP indeed.

LSD (Steve Ward Acid Manipulation) (6:41)
LSD (HMC original mix remastered) (7:48)
Review: HMC is the undisputed godfather of the Australian techno scene. A quarter of a century ago he dropped his brilliantly nasty 'LSD' track and it went on to soundtrack raves all over the world. Now, he returns with a special anniversary edition on bespoke label Reflector. The original has been remastered for the occasion and still kicks like a mule - the hurried drums, the slapping and crashing snares and the urgent bass are all run through with angsty stabs that make for an intense rave sound. Also included is a new remix from Steve Ward. His Acid Manipulation is a brain frying workout with haunting pads a wispy acid to freak you out further.

Made In Japan (6:07)

Euler (6:22)
101 Thru 09 (4:40)
Review: EYA Records continues to grow in stature as they strut into their third year of operation, and they're scoring a big coup with this new release from the ever-prolific EDMX. The man otherwise known as Ed Upton offers up some especially floor-focused tackle here, leading in with the freaky house flavours of 'Made In Japan' before slipping into the shuffling techno freakery of 'Options'. 'Euler' has a punchy thrust to it, and '101 Thru 09' taps into a bleepy vein which calls to mind some of Mathew Jonson's wonkier output from the mid 00s minimal era. It's a different slant to what you might expect from EDMX, but it slots in perfectly on EYA, a label championing warm, outboard twists on the tech house tradition.

Review: Dutchman Malin Genie is head of his own self titled label, as well as this one, is co-owner of Oscillat and De Vloer and is also a member of Mandar member with Lazare Hoche and SAM. Despite all those projects he still manages to sound fresh and different each and every time he pops up. This time out he strides forwards on a loopy techno pulse on 'Corpse Grinder' , gets freaky on the dark synths and eerie pads of 'Death Mangler' and flips you the fuck out with the acid frenzy that is 'Weakling Poser'. And that's just the a-side, on the reverse are three more left of centre dance floor weapons that take in both sleazy house and cosmic electro. What an EP.

Crispy Bacon (original mix) (5:41)
Crispy Bacon (Jeff Mills Solid Sleep mix) (5:22)
Review: There's been much debate over the years about whose version of this seminal track was in fact the best. Laurent Garnier's 1997 classic "Crispy Bacon" gets a vinyl re-issue and it still stands the test of time. You can just imagine how innovative and futuristic this adrenalised peak time weapon sounded like in the mid-nineties. On the flip, the equally legendary Jeff Mills delivers his take on the track, keeping in mind that this is one of only a handful he's ever done. There's relentless and punishing cyclicality on offer here; the sharply resonating loops, that brutally overdriven 808 kick.. it's one of those secret weapons that never leaves the bag of the best techno DJs. Choose your side, but either way it's a definitely a classic!

Str8 Crooked (7:57)
Build Back Better Sweatshops (5:55)
Episcopi Vagantes (16:21)
Review: Based in New York City and famed for his sonic experimentalism, Madteo is back with another alluring three tracker on Honest Jon's. The music is all about rugged machine funk, busted loops and lo-fi house grooves that recall the greats like Moodymann. 'Str8 Crooked' is the most loose and clattering of the lot with its knackered bassline stay down low. The amusingly titled 'Build Back Better Sweatshops' is scuffed up deep house a la STL and 'Episcopi Vagantes' is an epic 16 minute tune with spinning hi hats, wonky synthesis and plenty of cavernous soundscapes to explore at 5am on a darkened dance floor.

210407.3 (5:51)
Review: Back in April, WSNWG supremo Rodhad and DJ/producer Fadi Mohem headed to Speedy J's STOOR LAB studio for a collaborative jam session. It went well, so they then decided to turn the music they recorded into this full four-track EP. It's a pleasingly energetic and dynamic affair with some genuinely impressive moments. For proof, check opener '210407.1', where waves of spacey synthesizer sounds lap around a driving techno groove rich in hissing cymbals and powerful kick-drums, as well as the track that follows, '210409.1', a speedier but less dense affair marked out by warehouse-ready stabs. Elsewhere, '210407.2' is a wild, minor-key techno stomper, while '210407.3' is a more off-kilter outing blessed with wild TB-303 motifs and some superb sound design.

Review: Tresor has been a global home to techno for 30 years now. The world was a very different place when the Berlin institution opened in 1991 but it has remained at the forefront of the gene though all its many different mutations. The club itself has been a breeding ground for new talents, dancers and DJs who have pushed the boundaries and explored new realms. The Berlin-Detroit connection always remained strong at the club and it does here on this landmark compilation. It profiles all the key artists who helped to define Tresor, and techno at large, over three decades, and it should not be missed.

Home (5:32)
No Reply (5:06)
Review: Fresh from a fine EP on the mighty Livity Sound imprint, London duo Two Shell returns to their Mainframe Label with something surprising: a fuzzy, lo-fi vocal techno number. 'Home' naturally boasts deep sub-bass and fuzzy electronics, but also a sweet, effects-laden female vocal, fluttering electronic chords and some intricate, IDM-influenced additional percussion. It's underground and leftfield enough to impress the heads, but also accessible, warm and tasty. They return to the deep on flipside cut 'No reply', a post-dubstep techno excursion marked out by powerful sub-bass, freaky, twisted vocal samples and a sampled R&B vocal. If you like the output of the shadowy Ghost Phone series, it should be right up your alley.

She is a Manchester talent bring plenty of freshness to techno on her own label Cultivated Electronic, and is a well known face in the city's cult Eastern Bloc. She has also picked up praise from various media outlets and played notable gigs at Freerotation and The Warehouse Project. She pulls no punches here with 'Respect To The Drex' lacing a driving tech tune with Drexcyian electro. 'Return To Nazca' is an intergalactic techno assault with warped bass and scintillating melodies and theer is no let up on the crunchy, breaks-driven 'TT Drone.' Last but not least is the hurried drum funk of 'We Continue', making this another standout EP.

Feelin Butts (6:13)
Wanka Beats (7:47)
Review: Is there anyone out there making house as raw, fucked up and visceral as Paranoid London right now? The pair make sounds that hark back to the scuzzy days of early Chicago while bringing plenty of fresh ideas. Their Pledits series hits volume number three and moves to vinyl for the first time to mark the occasion. This new 12" is a direct to dance floor banger with 'Feelin Butts' slapping away on a relentless coruscated bassline and with ghetto vocal loops over the top. 'Wanka Beats' is less in your face but just as physical as it locks you in ragged loops, caustic synths and scintillating percussion that is pure late night warehouse music.

Review: Tale Of Us's Afterlife label is the world renowned home of emo techno that is melodic, melancholic and mournful. Anyma now becomes the latest addition to the ranks with this well crafted 12". There are scintillating chords on 'Sentient' that send shivers down the spine over bulky drums. 'Reminding' (feat Rosa Anschutz) goes big on trance chords and anthemic vocals that are designed to win over big festival crowds and 'Fragments' then explores a more quiet and minimal sound that has wispy pads and pensive chords joining the delicate broken beats. 'Omnia' closes out with a more epic melodic techno feel.

Review: Regent pulls no punches on this electric new four track 12" for Arts. He races out of the blocks with cantering techno drums on 'Oil Rigger,' which has a rugged synth loop and muffled voices building the tension. 'Light Of Opia' is a chunky, loopy, punchy wall of warm techno sound and 'Nova' then steps out into the cosmos with a more sci-fi melodic edge and emotive vocals to bring the soul. It's the standout of the EP and sure to take a party to new heights before the rugged, macho techno drums return on the dark and glitchy closer, 'Relics.'

Buchla 909 Jam (9:57)
Review: Cocktail d'Amore Music returns from a short hiatus with a new release from Russian producer TMO. The three tracks are tied together by a propensity for heavy rhythm construction and distorted acid lines, executed to great effect. Opening with "Last Moment Jam" , a searing main room projectile, TMO presents what is heavily inspired by early Chicago acid track. For those looking for something on the trippier end, "Drums Jam" provides a low bpm hallucination full of delays. Closing is, "Buchla 909 Jam", a 10 minute slow burn exercise in analog fundamentals for late night fantasies.

Review: A new one this week from Roberto Corizzo aka Hydergine, the Italian producer and owner of the Ranges label. From the cavernous and seriously introverted groove dynamics of 'Augmented Reality' (Reshape) on the A side, things get more upbeat and intense over on the flip with Fluxion's remix, where the Greek veteran gets into some typically greyscale funk. But the real treat of course is on the flip, with Bvdub's Worlds Fall Inwards remix where the singular Northern Californian producer delivers another awe-inspiring wall of sound reinterpretation echoing his recent album under his Earth House Hold alias, complete with his emotional and bittersweet vocal delivery atop.

Orange Juice Man (5:26)
Review: Bjarki, a new producer hailing from Iceland, makes his debut on Nina Kraviz's Trip with an effective two-piecer aimed at the dancefloor. "I Wanna Go Bang" is straight, hard-hitting and boasting an instantly memorable vocal which you'll probably be hearing around the dances this summer. "Orange Juice Man", however, is the complete antithesis of it's A-side cousin, where Bjarki opts for a deeper, chuggier kinda groove that's more suited to the corner-dwellers than the first-rowers.

Various artists have graced the label including John Shima and Dan Piu, but now Peterson returns to steer the ship himself with a new project entitled Ancient Trees vs Skyscrapers. It's not hard to ascertain the ideas bubbling away behind the release, and sure enough Peterson rolls out exquisite synthesis which ebbs and flows with a fluidity which feels inspired by nature, albeit still very much in the context of crisply rendered deep house and techno with a Motor City influence.

Review: During last year's extended pandemic-related lockdowns, Levon Vincent spent more time in his studio than he has in years. He's been releasing the results this year and plenty of people have (rightly) been impressed with the epic, analogue-rich jams Vincent has shared. His latest two tracker - the NYC producer's fifth of 2021 - continues in a similar vein to its predecessors. While confirmed fans will lap up flipside 'Bells Phase (Phasing Tribal House)' - a surging, slowly building affair that sees a chiming melody ride a scuzzy techno groove - it's the more musically expansive A-side, 'We Will Dance Together Again' that really hits the spot. A near 15-minute excursion that peppers a jacking machine groove with warming live keys, pulsating bass and lovely musical flourishes, it's one of Vincent'smost positive-sounding tracks to date.

After dropping the P record on Cartulis Music last year, as well as his debut album Live 4 Love, he's now back with 2, which comes loaded with smart and punchy club tracks for the players. Aligning with the sound you might hear on Partisan or Time Passages, Takicardie fires off his drum machines and synths with dead-eye precision, keeping a cool demeanour and placing the emphasis on the low end rhythm section.
