Outer Acid (6:37)
Qwazars (6:15)
Nodyahed (6:44)
Aether (6:50)
Review: It would be fair to say that Mr Fingers 2016 is something of an event release, at least for those who love deep house. While Larry Heard has kept busy - largely with remixes and reissues - this marks the first 12" release under his most famous moniker for over a decade. He begins in contemplative mood, fusing tumbling music box melodies, creepy electronics and nagging 303 lines on "Outar Acid", before laying down some typically blissful, atmospheric deep house on the wondrous "Qwazars". Flip for "Nodyahead", an effortless mixture of heavy dub-house bottom end, African-influenced percussion and moody late night refrains, and the ultra-deep, piano-laden bliss of "Aether".

These Words (4:53)
No Words (3:50)
Review: It's been a while since Detroit producer Javonntte last treated us to a collection of tracks, with his last fresh material dropping way back in 2008. Since, he's kept himself busy by playing instruments on records by Mike Grant's Cool Ppl project. There's much to admire on this five-track collection, from the fluid deep house bump of "Bounce" - whose killer bassline impressively drives things forward - and wavy late night positivity of "Chaka's Revenge", to the classic US deep house brightness of "My Life". The EP concludes with two versions of "These Words"; the super-soulful, vocal dreaminess of "Mix 3", and the similarly warm and comforting "Original Instrumental".

Aquarian Voyage (6:33)
Run Sa (Dimitri Walker live drums) (5:48)
Review: Sound Signature's latest missive comes from Byron The Aquarius, a former Onra collaborator best known for his dusty trips into MPC beat-making territory. Here, the Atlanta-based producer successfully turns his hand to dusty, soul-flecked deep house, peppering the bumpin' groove of "Aquarian Voyage" with a toasty bassline and twinkling Rhodes motifs. It's the kind of hazy, jazz-flecked deep house that Sound Signature has always done better than almost anyone else. Flipside "Run Sa", featuring the fluid and intoxicating playing of drummer Dmitri Walker, is even better, with warm chords draping themselves over snappy snares, hissing cymbals and killer fills.

London Steps (10:24)
Spirits Speaks (7:40)
Lil Love (6:30)
Review: Volcov's Neroli is definitely all about the classic sounds as much as it is about emotive deepness and soul. A label where Domu, Dego and Kaidi Tatham have all appeared in recent times so you know how serious they are! This time around it's over to NYC producer Trinidadian Deep who has served an apprenticeship of sorts under legends of the craft such as Ron Trent and Osunlade. Speaking of which, the spiritual Afro vibe of "London Steps" is very reminiscent of Osunlade or Ron Trent's African Blues Project. "Spirit Speaks" is pure bliss amidst a wash of rich synth textures and swirling pads with hypnotic conga drums. Finally "Lil Love" is driving deep house for heaving dance floors featuring yet another execution of fine elements, no doubt honed by his time with NYC's finest. Tip!

Don't Stop (Let It Go) (feat Izzi Dunn) (7:18)
Save It Til Later (4:49)
Review: Assisted by long-time studio partner Kaidi Tatham, former 4 Hero man Dego's been on fire of late, delivering killer singles - and a fine album - for the likes of Eglo and Rush Hour. Here he pops up on Neroli again with more superb, soul-flecked dancefloor fare. "Don't Stop (Let It Go)" is particularly potent, offering a disco and jazz-funk influenced chunk of celebratory deep house laden with thrilling live instrumentation from members of "the 2000 Black family" (Tatham and others, basically). He completely flips the script on "Save It Till Later", a refreshingly rough and ready chunk of bass-heavy, acid-flecked house/techno fusion that benefits greatly for some particularly warped electronics. Darkness and light on one 12"; what's not to like?

Review: Superconscious, the Australian label overseen by the most evocatively named duo Francis Inferno Orchestra and Fantastic Man, returns with a fifth offering and the welcome sight of some fresh material from Andras Fox. Last spotted on a Dopeness Galore 12" alongside regular sparrer Oscar Key Sung, this fresh 5 track 12" sees the Foxmaster taking subtle cues from Cajmere, Pal Joey and some lesser known Australian house producers from the '90s. There is a DIY, lo-fi sheen apparent throughout but it's complemented by a refreshing sense of humour in some of the little production touches. See the 'horny-Australiana disco' of "Soy Boy" for an example of this. A great 12"!

Review: Thatmanmonkz is Scott Moncrieff to be precise, a Sheffield based producer who been making house music since around 1997 but more recently on Kolour LTD and of course Delusions Of Grandeur: where he's recognised as a label mainstay. His new album Colombusing is a mighty 14 track effort, and there's a wide variety of moods and grooves, not to mention collaborations! Some of those very hookups are the highlights on here, we must say. There's a couple of tracks with San Francisco minimalist/human beatbox Dave Aju; "Turn It Out" is a deep and sleazy funk jam with Cameo-ish vocals, while "Boogie Down" features the sweet lungs of Erik Rico whose Curtis Mayfield impressions suit this feelgood soul jam just perfectly. "Baked" features the deep poetry of NYC's Malik Ameer on this on this dope jam full of urban flavour. There's music to dance to too, rest assured: "Take U 2 My House" featuring Khalil Anthony is surefire deep house aimed squarely at the dance floor.

Review: Italian duo Nu Guinea has previously proved adept at creating humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Here, they focus a little more on the latter with a concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen. With his blessing, and that of the Comet label on which he's been releasing since the 1980s, the Early Sounds Recordings pair has cut-up and re-constructed Allen's drums, combining them with their own steamy electronics, vintage synthesizer lines and classic drum machines. It's an intoxicating and hugely entertaining blend that sits somewhere between their previous outings, Danny Wolfers' material under the Nacho Patrol guise, and the dreamy late '80s/early '90s work of forgotten Italian producer Mr Marvin.

Deeply personal and reflective "Peripherals" is a milestone for Mark whose previous releases have been championed by the likes of Prosumer, Soulphiction, Session Victim, Russ Gabriel and Hunee."Jaded" and "Another Broken Sunday" draw inspiration from Detroit capturing the beauty of cosmic techno perfectly. "Assumptions" features samples of Mark's late father playing saxophone alongside Sun Ra resulting in a profound and meaningful example of modern jazz fusion whilst the title track "Peripherals" draws the EP to a close with a delicate piece of poignant ambience."

Review: Bristol imprint Banoffee Pies comes at us with their third release. This time they've handed the reigns to Swedes and Junk Yard Connections alumni Adam Stromstedt & Art Alfie. They give us the deep and soothing "Drum Off" and like the name might suggests: there are some pretty crazy drums going off in there. Jaffa Surfa's (aka Zoltan Pal/Zee) "Souled Out" is early noughties style filtered disco house; always a worthy addition. While on the flip we've got "KO Bad (Hansel Edit)" a bit of dusty, smoked out, hip-hop inspired deep house that fans of Glenn Astro and Max Graef will well dig!

Review: Smart Bar resident Garrett David previously impressed with the bumpin' Queen Tracks EP on Stripped & Chewed. Here, he returns to the Chicagoan imprint, this time working alongside fellow Gramaphone Records employee Adam Rowe. For the most part, the duo sticks to a hazy, warm and melodious sunrise deep house blueprint, melding attractive melody lines, sugar-sprinkled electronics and toasty chords to grooves that shuffle loosely, rather than bang hard. There are notable diversions, though; the standout "Summit (Smashed Mix)" adds a little old school Detroit flavour to the percussion for an altogether more rolling vibe, while "Space Jam" is as atmospheric and intergalactic ambient cut as you'll hear all year.

Clarinet Moods, The EPs namesake, comes in two different cuts both with the Clarinet skills of Rai herself, the "Melody Mix" is real nod to the afterhours, subtle drums & A haunting clarinet lick, While the "Lazy dub" a little more upbeat, still has that afterhours vibe, carried with the clarinet & simple percussions, Closing things up here is "Move to the Front" built for the dancefloor, a Rolling bassline & synth, layered over a rolling percussion makes up the final cut.

Review: Motor City Drum Ensemble man Danilo Plessow believes that this split 12", first released on Manchester's Rainy City Music 20 years ago, is one of the finest deep house records ever to emerge from the UK (he's not alone, either - Theo Parrish and Jeremy Underground are also fans). For this official reissue, all three tracks have been re-mastered from the original DAT tapes. City People's ten-minute "It's All In The Groove", where delay-laden percussion hits and sparkling, Si Brad style synth flashes ride a deliciously deep, disco-house groove, kicks things off in fine style. The other two tracks are solo efforts from City People man Irfan Hussain; both "A Lil Tribute To The Moody Black Keys" and "Jus' Nite Groovin" sound like classic Chez Damier productions.

Review: Brian Not Brian's Going Good imprint has thus far proved particularly good at defying convention in favour of harder-to-pigeonhole thrills. Who better to turn to, then, that Ewan Jansen, a producer who has been delivering off-kilter house music on and off since 1997. Predictably, Lost Embers is an intriguing diverse and atmospheric set, variously touching on dreamy, Aphex Twin style ambience ("Ethernet" and "Analogue Vista"), loose-limbed techno positivity ("Weatherboard" and "Mantle Ships"), jazz-flecked downtempo brilliance (the fantastic "Tracking Olympus"), and Mood Hut/1080p style new age deep house eccentricity ("Dark Jazz Delay"). While pleasingly varied, it all feels typically warm and dusty, as you'd expect from a producer who still values analogue hardware.

Review: Hot on the heels of that rather wondrous Le Sampler Des Copains doublepack, Pablo Valentino's Faces label returns proffering a debut for long serving Italian DJ and producer Giovanni Damico. The White Rabbit Recordings boss has quite the impressive discography, with 12" shaped emissions on Bitter Moon, Lumberjacks in Hell, Seven Limited and Black Key Records. His La Dame Et Le Conga EP fits snugly into the Faces aesthetic and yes it does feature some conga on the title cut. An apparent nod to Damico's latin and jazz past, "La Dame Et Le Conga" is quite exquisite in both its original form and the accompanying Magnificent Deep remix from Rick Wade. Either side of those Damico brings some soul heavy and sample heavy house vibes with closer "What U Feel Like" a real B-side gem.

Review: Helpfully, there's little information about the mysterious artist - or artists - behind this first, four-track missive on the Decent International imprint. Musically, though, there's much to admire - not least the anonymous producer's penchant for combining Ugandan, Liberian and Ghanaian percussion with vintage drum machine hits and humid electronics. While there are some more purist offerings - see the looped indigenous samples, trademark guitars and fluid percussion of "Leaving You", and horn-heavy, vocal rich "When Koaa" - it's the more adventurous offerings that really hit the spot. Both "Uganda Futura 1" and "Uganda Futura 2" are delightfully out-there, pairing original African rhythms with the far-sighted electronics of Motor City techno - it's just a shame they both last no longer than 2 and a half minutes.

Review: Self-confessed NYC house and disco evangelist Eli Escobar delivers four cuts of sure-fire deep-grooves to burn up any worthwhile loft party in Bushwick and beyond. "Seein' You (Extended Mix)" is the kind of sexy late night deep house that's reminiscent of KDJ. Also on the A side is "Tension (Vinyl Mix)" which is our favourite; this is one gritty and gnarly EBM jam complete with jacking vocals: a workout that's sure to cause some sweat on the walls. On the flip "NY So Hi (Whatever Whatever Remix)" is a new mix of a track from his recent album Up All Night. Finally "Red Hot (Moody Mix)" is a clever edit of ESG's Martin Hannett produced classic. Review: Leron Carson may not be the best-known Midwest producer, but he has history. Carson's first release came way back in 2001, with Theo Parrish putting out a track he'd recorded way back in 1987 and has appeared on Sound Signature intermittently over the years. This new 12" from Carson for Theo's label is HEAVY! "Lemonline" is a deliciously breezy concoction, with Carson's jazzy piano riffs working in perfect unison with bouncy, Latin-influenced drum rhythms. Flipside "Sofnthik", on the other hand, sounds like a previously unheard 1980s Chicago deep house concoction, with warm, loved-up chords swirling around a clattering drum machine groove. Whether it was recorded 30 years ago is unknown, but it certainly boasts a similar lo-fi, analogue feel.

Review: Way back in 2007, Mike Huckaby released an EP that joined the dots between Detroit deep house and dub techno all made exclusively on his Waldorf Wave synthesizer. Some nine years on, he's finally got around to releasing a follow-up. My Life With The Wave Volume 2 eschews the dub techno influences of old, instead focusing on the fluid, rich, soul-flecked Motor City deep house he does so well. He begins with the looped, minor key melodies and strutting grooves of "Let The Dancer Do His Thing", before increasing the rhythmic intensity via the cymbal-heavy waviness of "Phuture". Flip for the sun-kissed breeziness of "Baseline 313" - all repetitive electric piano motifs, handclap-heavy percussion and tribal vocal samples - and the fluttering, picturesque deepness of "Another Fantasy". All four tracks are good, but then when does Huckaby ever let us down?

Freshness
Review: French label D3 Elements returns to Chicago for its next EP, this time looking to the assured house talents of Hakim Murphy for three tracks of raw, dense grooves right from the heart of the Windy City. Opener 'Boxbeat' is a curious, freaky jam with bobbing percussive hits, wonky, pixel thin synth lines and free roaming pads that wrap the whole thing in a nice sense of spaced-out serenity. 'Taste o'Rainbow' has a much more firmly planted kick drum that pounds away uninterrupted below a free flowing brew of modulate synth sounds. It's expertly reduced and masterfully reserved and is sure to send dance floors wild as a result. The flipside cut 'Freshness' has pinging drums and a big, frazzled bass line as slithering chords rain down the face. Musical yet jacking, cosmic yet propulsive, it is a perfectly contemporary Chicago house sound that rounds out a fine EP from one of the best in the game.

Review: The uniquely soulful talents of Seven Davis Jnr were introduced to the wider world last year when the Houston-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and poet was picked by Kutmah for inclusion on the selector's Brownswood compilation. This EP for Jay Simon's Must Have label finds Davis Jnr applying his talent for bugged out soul and rattling rhythms to a house template and it's sublime from the very off. Lead track "One" bumps along with the infectious nature of a KDJ cut and it's truly blessed by Davis Jnr's husky vocal delivery on that most timeless of subject matters - rarely is there house music these days that is filled with genuine soul but this track certainly is. The twilight tones of "Breaker" present a more urgent production, all rapid drum fills and handclaps lent a sense of yearning by the vocal, and "All Kinds" (Loud mix) operates at a similar zippy tempo yet glides high. A final two track suite sees Davis Jnr operate on a slower, almost beatdown slant which will be explored more on a soon to drop record for Kutmah's IZWID. Highly recommended stuff!

Credit must go to label boss Jeremy Underground, who here continues his quest to champion overlooked and forgotten house with a second collection of slept-on gems. With 12 quality tracks stretched across three slabs of wax - with accompanying detailed sleeve notes - there's much to enjoy, from the thumping, rave-era stomp of DJ Tools' Cleveland City classic "Hey Mr Shy One (Not Too Shy 2 Sample Mix)", to the hard-to-pigeonhole genius of Expectations' in-demand 1992 obscurity "Techno Soul". Naturally, the more soulful side of US deep house is represented, via killer selections from Groovestyle and Dionne.
