Biting
Heavy Setters
Pass The Mortek
Review: A Berlin/Melbourne soundclash of delightfully juicy proportions, Graef and Hart have concocted three ace compositions right here. Filtered to the max with big jack swings, each one of these will find favour on late night floors. "Biting" is the slinkiest, sleaziest of the three. Complemented by the quintessential deep house wailing vocal and a raising chord structure on the fill, it's an instant elevator. "Heavy Setters" comes complete with an array of disco bubbles and an added thump on the rhythm while "Pass The Mortek" rides atop of a slinky percussive arrangement. Great for nu-disco and deep house heads alike.

Give It Up For Love (A Heavy Disco Joint)
Star Of The Guetto (A Heavy Disco Joint)
Review: Two slabs of heavy discotheque material from the Modern Artifacts crew, taking in specially tweaked disco dad favourites from Average White Band and Ben E. King double header. Lining the A Side is the cover version of Ned Donehy's "Get It Up For Love" which has end of night shoulder rubber written all over it. Turn the table and it's the timeless "Star Of The Ghetto" that gets the Heavy Disco treatment, offering some hands in the air contrast to the widely lauded deeper edit of the same track from Stupid Human.

El Halcon Rising
Eastern Promise
La Luz
Review: Super-limited and super cosmic, the Keyboard Masher family reunite for three more galaxy galvantations. "El Halcon Rising" creeps and weeps with Moogy moans, spiralling pads and emphatic choral beef. "Eastern Promise" rolls with more of a wistful swing thanks to snaky hi-hats and a cool filtered guitar loop. Dreamy and deep, drop it at the right time and there won't be a dry eye in sight. Finally we hit "La Luz", all shimmering guitars and soft, subtle kickdrum back bone, it's an instant Balearic gem. Beautiful.

Alive (feat Bing Ji Ling)
Just Landed (Pete Herbert remix)
Review: It's been some three years since Phil Mison last graced the world with some original material as Cantoma, and fans will be glad to hear that the producer is preparing a third album for release in October. Some advance insight into how it will turn out is afforded with this limited 12" release of lead single Alive that features the silky vocal talents of Bing Ji Ling. The crooning alter ego of fuzzy headed Phenomenal Handclap Band member Quinn Luke, Bing Ji Ling is the perfect vocal foil to Mison's guitar flecked arrangement which is bound to feature on many an upcoming Balearic compilation. On the flip Mison's Reverso 69 partner in crime Pete Herbert delivers a glistening discoid take on "Just Landed".

Free Love
Far West
Review: Edit champion Eddie C serves up two brand new original works for Red Motorbike and they both scream summertime vibes. "Free Love" is a kind of Doobie Brothers / Ojays fusion with a tight funk groove and emphatic soulful vocals that aren't dissimilar to Isaac Hayes's backing band. "Far West" is much more languid, deeper and more cosmic thanks to its crisp guitar plucks, sun-bleached bass thumps and overall Krautrocky synth washes. Hand-stamped and limited, this needs your attention right now!

Balearic Girl (Psychemagik edit)
Spiced Odyssey (Psychemagik edit)
Review: After brushing the dust off their fingers accrued from compiling that excellent Magik Sunrise compilation for Leng, Psychemagik return to their Discotheque Wreckers series for the final 12" installment. Lead track "Balearic Girl" allegedly originates from a super rare Swedish hairspray advert, with the summery vocal hook and heavy bassline augmented by Psychemagik's subtle mastery of dancefloor tweaks. On the flip, "Spiced Oddity" finds the pair in cosmic chug territory and is a sublime way to round out the series, though we hear whispers that a Disco Wreckers CD compiling the series along with two bonus cuts will arrive later this summer.

Sweet Nothing
Jupiter Dub
Review: From the Edmonton-based edit party crew, "Common Edit 6" features two superbly spaced out slices of funk. "Sweet Nothing" is the more the dancefloor-focussed groove with a spider-like bassline that weaves a cosmic web over you while spiralling strings and reverbed horn toots cast all manner of spells upside your head. "Jupiter Dub" is the freakiest of the pair as a Wah Wah guitar plays the lead vocalist over an immense chugging bassline. There's nothing common about these cuts whatsoever.

On My Way
Review: Long regarded as an esteemed crate digger and DJ, Kon's transformation into a fully fledged producer is complete with this very summer appropriate LP for BBE. It's been some time coming too, with Kon slowly revealing his production chops across a series of under the counter edits, remixes and a full EP for Soul Clap's label earlier this year. The eleven track On My Way unfurls with the kind of bump and groove we've come to expect from a Kon DJ set and also reveals him to be a somewhat talented song writer, teaming up with veteran house crooner George Levin, Ben Westbeech and Amy Douglas on several tracks ("Blow Me... A Kiss" with the latter is proper Disclosure territory) Matching bumping mid tempo cuts with some sultry jams (808 State) and outright disco burners ("Love Shine") makes On My Way a very impressive debut and perfect for the BBE label.

Keep It Funkin (Vocoder version)
Keep It Funkin (instrumental version)
Review: Conjuring up the spirit of Mr Troutman himself, XL Middleton pays homage to the original source with this special vinyl-only jam. P-funk bass, lazy beats, cool synth squiggles and a subtle vocoder action, this is an authentic dedication to the sound that carved the west coast hip-hop sound. Complete with an instrumental, beats really don't come much funkier.

Telephones - "Rytmenarkotisk"
DJ Fett Burger & Telephones - "Tutti Frutti Del Mar"
DJ Fett Burger - "Burger Trip"
Review: Last seen on the cultish Very Polish Cut-Outs label, Bergen based producer Telephones debuts on another cultish imprint in the shape of Sex Tags UFO pairing up with DJ Fett Burger. Towing the line wonderfully between mutant disco and dilapidated house, the Rytmenarkotisk EP features one solo production from both producers either side of a collaborative cut. For the title track, Telephones is on wonderful form, laying down all manner of insouciant and glistening melodic touches over a live disco house stomp that's a legion away from preset driven productions. On "Tutti Frutti Del Mar" Telephones and Fett Burger combine for the kind of scandolearic production that would have Toddney Terje whilst Fett Burger's "Burger Trip" has that touch of the esoteric that has helped establish Sex Tags reputation for the weird and wonderful.

Find A Way
The Hurt
Sunshine
Review: Yes! A brilliant induction into the Neroli annals of fame for Mr Dego and his 200 Black crew; joining the likes of Domu and Nubian Mindz in adding some classic bruk boogie perspective to Volcov's long running label. There's numerous reasons to check this triple hitting Find A Way plate, not least the title cut where Dego teams up with Akwasi and Kaidi Taiham, with the latter offering up a rare turn on vocals as opposed to manning the keys; the results are sublime and soul enriched boogie which offers a nice contrast with the deeper, rolling bump of "The Hurt". The amazing Bembe Segue turns up on "Sunshine" with Dego and crew wisely taking a step back to let her take centre stage.

Wreck My Love

Lost Properly
MWI
Review: Graeme Clark returns to his Revenge persona, bringing a brand new imprint with him in the process. Looking back to his time with the Deportivo Street Team, there's a clear 'jamming' vibe present throughout this four tracker. Eschewing his disco tendencies, each of these four cuts are much more driving, deeper and, in the case of "MW1", downright techno-ish. Other highlights include the rich analogue synth hook on "Wreck My Love" and the dubbed out, heads-down Glasgow Underground style groove on "Lost Property".

One Time (original mix)
One Time (Craig Bratley remix)
One Time (Andrew Clarke remix)
Review: Just in case their album Pulsar wasn't quite enough to tickle your Balearic underbelly this summer, Italian duo Leo Ceccanti and Gianluca Salvadori have stepped up to the Above Machine controls for a sedate slab of glistening guitar-strummery. Wonderfully woozy and calming, it's the duo at their most laidback and confident. Remix-wise Bird Scarer-endorsed Craig Bratley gets all slinky and acidic while Andrew Clarke applies the dreamy space guitars. One time? Three times, more like... Each one of these versions rocks in their own unique way.

Paradise Drive
Loma Alta
Baker Beach
Review: Windsurf's Samuel Grawe has dropped some sublime if intermittent solo material under the Hatchback name over the years, gracing the excellent Lo Recordings with two albums as well as dropping a sublime 12" on the much missed THISISNOTANEXIT. Kudos goes to Watson and Ritesh Kumar's Adult Contemporary for coaxing this slab of Hatchback material out of Grawe with the 3 track Marin County 12" every bit as sumptuous as those aforementioned releases. Lead track "Paradise Drive" sets the tone and demonstrates Grawe's talent for arrangement with the languid piano tone perfectly complemented by the shuffling beat and rippling bed of warm textures that sit below. "Loma Alta" meanwhile sounds like New Beat gone Balearic whilst the soaring"Baker Beach" nudges up the tempo without any hint of sacrifice to the musicality.

The Music Sounds Better With 'Fro (Soft Rocks Adjustment)
Brothers (& Sisters) On The Slide (Soft Rocks Adjustment)
Review: Black Rox is back with 2 more sneaky Soft Rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked CD wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. Lead track "Music sounds better with 'fro" is a Stardust aping afro groove exploding into ecstatic, almost house, pianos. This one has been thoroughly road tested by dem Idjut Boys and Soft Rocks themselves... dancefloor detonation guaranteed. On the flip we get more righteous with "Brothers (& Sisters) On The Slide". Funky rollin' drums and a spoken word intro leading into a glorious anthemic song about struggling against the man.

Strange Attractor (Peaking Lights remix)
Isle Of Tears (Tiago remix)
Higher Love (The Backwoods remix)
Review: ESP Institute excel at two things very important to labels; releasing interesting original music that spans feelings, tempos and genres yet fit into the overall aesthetical approach and enlisting some fine artists when it comes to remixes. Last year's self titled album from Land of Light, the collaborative project of ESP regular Johnny Nash and former Spectral Empire producer Kyle Martin perfectly encapsulated the former and this addendum 12" does the same for the latter. Peaking Lights, Tiago and The Backwoods all bring their respective styles to the fore in impressive fashion; in thee hands of Aaron "Peaking Lights" Coyes, "Strange Attractor" is transformed into luscious, dubby expanses nudged forth by a lazy motorik beat. Complementing this, Tiago gets his salsa on with a guitar flecked rendition of "Isle Of Tears" whilst Jap crew The Backwoods provide the defining dancefloor moment with their take on "Higher Love".

Biscuit Twat (Linkwood mix)
Francis Inferno Orchestra - "3AM Piano Thing"
Review: Firecracker don Linkwood makes his Voyeurhythm debut on the label's twelfth release, sharing space Aussie producer Francis Inferno Orchestra. The amusingly titled "Biscuit Twat (Linkwood Mix)" comes attached with the sort of intriguing story you'd hope it warrants with the production apparently the end product of a production session with an unnamed producer from the Midlands conducted via Skype that prominently featured tea & biscuits. Whilst it remains unclear who is the subject of Linkwood's ire, it hasn't affected his talent for blending tough drums with a rich bassline. On the flip, Francis Inferno Orchestra returns to VR with "3am piano thing" which as you might guess is a drum heavy DJ tool with plenty of stabbing piano lines.

Hooked On You (A Special Feeling edit)
Body 2 Body (More Lotion edit)
Leg Over (Uptown edit)
Review: The Giant Cuts label muster up Volume 3 of their Disco Boogie Classics series, which this time open with the Bootsy Collins-esque cowbell ring funk of "Hooked On You (A Special Feeling edit)". Had it been the early '70s, the string lead instrumental and guitar licked sway of "Body 2 Body (More Lotion edit)" would make the ideal soundtrack to a Blaxploitation montage, while the synthesised Caribbean funk of "Leg Over (Uptown) edit" is best served in a hot loft, with platform shoes and a whole lot of punch.

Carnaval Legrand (Opolopo remix)
Carnaval Legrand (Opolopo dub)
Review: Hot on the heels of Beedle and Yam Who's remixes of "Carnaval" come more respectful contemporisations of Brazilian funk troupe Azymuth. Beedle takes on "E Mulher" this time around, stretching it out into two deep, dubby renditions peppered with percussion, soulful chords and lolloping bass grooves. Opolopo, meanwhile, makes a bid to better his still-impeccable remix of "1960 What?" and takes "Carnaval" on trip to synth boogie town. With warm, wriggling acid bass and reverb soaked percussion, it's not far off his best.
