Northern Lights (11:02)
Drawn From The Side Of Crime (12:49)
Review: It's been a while since we heard from the Cobblestone Jazz boys and given their massive influence over contemporary house and techno, it's always a pleasure to listen to their truly singular take on dance music. The Matthew Jonson-led outfit return with an EP for the Itiswhatitis label, the original birthplace of Jonson's beats. "Northern Lights" is classic Cobblestone, where an ultra compressed kick meanders amidst calculated drips of sound pouring mathematically from every angle. "Drawn From The Side Of Crime" is a little more chirpy, its sounds bleeping away with greater intensity and freedom. It's a must have for fans of the group, recommended!

Nu
Spider Feel
Review: Last year's Ballad of the Ice LP for I'm A Cliche seemed to open quite a few doors for Tel Aviv pair Dori Sadovnik & Niv Arzi with Red Axes appearances on Kompakt, Highlife, and Relish. The commencement of a new Shem series of records brings the Red Axes back to Cosmo Vitelli's label with a remit being tracks geared towards the dancefloor but always retaining the one-of-a-kind approach that it distils in all its productions. The four tracks on Volume 1 set the tone nicely, be it the Delia Derbyshire does cavernous acid house vibes of "Na Da" or the spectral "Balma" which features the Portuguese crooner Abrao. Best of all however is the effervescent jack track "Nu" which really exemplifies the talent of Red Axes to make club-ready tracks out of organic elements.

Tommy Vicari Jnr - "Volatiles Pt 1" (5:42)
Anton Zap - "Crucifix Lane" (6:22)
Review: Emotive tracks by two super producers who impressed Cartulis Day with their memorable sets. The collective invites Tommy Vicari Jnr and Anton Zap once again, this time to showcase their music for the label's third release.
Tommy Vicari Jnr brings us a deeply playful side A track, well suited for those special after hours. Anton Zap names his track after Crucifix Lane, Cartulis' "home" for more than 5 years before it was forced to close earlier this year. He recreates that stomping ground atmosphere with this B track, sure to keep a dance floor pulsating during the peak of the night.

XTC (8:18)
Knee On Belly (6:05)
Review: Every year one of 'those' records comes along that you hear everywhere; big DJs drop it, small DJs cherish it, radio plays it. You get the picture. XTC by DJ Koze looks to be one of those records. The PAMPA boss is renowned for a talent at wrenching optimum levels of emotion from electronic music and "XTC" is a fine example of how well DJ Koze does it. Some eight minutes of deep house every bit as immediately consuming as, say "Beautiful Life" by Gui Boratto, are complemented by the appearance twice of a pitched down vocal (that sounds remarkably similar to Maggie Thatcher) discussing the popular drug that informed the title. Complementing this, Koze indulges in some superb cut up filter house with "Knee On Belly".

Not A Story (7:50)
Blossom (7:47)
Ziegensicher (6:26)
Review: Lazy Hartz Club member Evan Baggs delivers a sultry three-tracker on behalf of the Tokyo-based party crew Cabaret Recordings, and it's quality deep house vibes from start to finish. "Not A Story" flexes its muscle to and fro with a whooshing bassline and intricate atmospheric patters, while on the flip, "Blossom" takes a more jacking approach to work around the growling low-end beneath, and "Ziegensicher" rattles its percussion with a distinct freneticism to complete a solid, pulsating thirty minutes of sound.

Jungle Boogie (REda daRE remix) (7:19)
House Music On (6:50)
Number One (6:48)
Review: France's Djebali just keeps on giving with through his self-named label and this Two Diggers 12" is another testament to the guy's shimmering quality when it comes to tailoring house beats. "Jungle Boogie" is dusty, swinging and utterly primed at the dancefloor, and there's also REda daRE remix which heads further down the rabbit hole thanks to a total strip, leaving the hi-hats to lock the groove. Further dubby house business on "House Music On" and "Number One", two licks which can act as both tools and background ambience rhythms. Effective, slick and quality as per usual.

Review: Active as a producer of minimally-inclined techno since 2007, Barcelona's Chris Turan has come to wider attention of late as Sonodab thanks to contributions for the likes of Fear of Flying, Trazable Recordings, Kina Music, Infuse, and his own eponymous label. A debut here for Tokyo-based Fasten Musique will only help facilitate this rise with the Monomial EP a suitably solid 12" featuring three originals by Sonodab backed by a remix from emergent Japanese talent Sinob Satosi. Crisp drums, deep bassline grooves and far off crackling textures punctuate the mood for the most part, with "Inverse Rhythm" a standout inclusion.

Where Are They Now
Review: After releases on Saints & Sonnets and Stay Underground, It Pays, Berlin artist Quell aligns with the MIL label for the four track Tomahawk which further cements his reputation for no-nonsense, stripped back house and techno music. "Size 7" sets the tone, a dark, underground roller with a trilling bassline and acidy bleeps that sits nicely alongside the shimmering chords and deep dubby vibes of "Monolame". On the B-side, Harhead leads with fluid percussive rhythms and sequential kick drums to give an immediate groove-intrinsic melody. The energetic, groove-led tone continues into the last track, "Where Are They Now", a Dark, techno-fused stripped back rhythm track with an acid tinged-feel.

Review: 53 Year Old Manuel Göttsching can easily be called a living Legend. In 1981 he recorded "E2 - E4" completely solo in his West Berlin Studio, live, in "one go" and without any later editing, over-dubs or such. Inspired by American minimal music artists like Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and Terry Riley. A piece of Music was created that would years after influence and change the whole electronic music scene.

Grandi Loba (Vahagn remix)
Review: For their latest vinyl release, the TINK! Music label looks to Lisbon and the enigmatic duo Gatupreto, whose Modo Di Trabadja 12" betrays all manner of influences that seep beyond the realm of house music. In their own words, "the art Gatupreto generates is simple, unpretentious and sincere, it owes to the classic rave vibe as much as to the rawness of hip hop as much to the sunset of Cape Verde as to the sunrise of the Lisbon riverside." This manifests itself in two understandably diverse productions from Gatupreto with the heavily percussive workout of Vahagn's closing remix of "Grandi Loba" of particular note.

Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: Barac Nicolae aka Barac hails from Bucharest in Romania and makes utterly effective minimal tech-house for the dancefloor. His latest EP comes courtesy of Pressure Traxx and we can safely say that these are certified head nodders, the lot of them! "Superlate Check In" is stomping, headstrong and full of hypnotic charisma on the A-side, but "Vermiana" is more stepping, broken in its structure and boasting an eerie collection of sounds. Last but not least, "Minem Monem" contains a well-placed break in its beat and makes for the EP's best and most original moment. Tip!

Lazy Boy (6:20)
Review: Ivan Smagghe's Les Disques De La Mort label has thrown up plenty of excellent music for the jobbing selectors in the 12 months since it launched, with all manner of classy talent contributing either original material or remixes. This latest platter introduces a new project from Paranoid London vocalist Mutado Pintado called Sworn Virgins and the two original tracks are augmented by some excellent remixes. Opening cut "Michelle (Dub)" fizzes brilliantly with unpredictable synthetic energy and is the sort of track you unleash deep into the night to send a crowd down the wormhole, whilst "Lazy Boy" is the best Hieroglyphic Being remix Liasions Dangereuses you've never heard. The accompanying remix from Fabrizio Mammarella reigns in some of the madness for a more focused club cut, whilst the superb Acid Arab do their thing to "Michelle", completely rewiring the track's DNA. A superb 12"!

Review: The mysterious Redream! 11 pops up out of nowhere with an instantly winning sound present on this 12" of the same name. Two tracks, two pieces of soulful minimalism: the vocal mix splatters its way left, right and centre with clicking beats and a growling low-end which slowly surfaces from beneath along with poppy blues vocals, while the dub is more militant and strips those vocals into fine threads which disappear into the deep realms of the mix.

Worship (feat Qzen - Dana Ruh remix) (7:17)
Feel Free (Dorisburg remix) (6:45)
Worship (feat Qzen - Alan Doe remix) (6:34)
Review: Following the release of their debut LP, 'Keep Up Appearances' on their new label Modelmaker, Dan Berkson and James What draft in Frank & Tony, Dana Ruh, Dorisburg and Alan Doe for remixes.
Berkson & What have chalked up many releases on Poker Flat and Crosstown Rebels over the years whilst most recently turning heads outside of their own Modelmaker imprint via singles for Dogmatik and Seth Troxler's Play it Say It. The duo's LP, released in January, marked a new chapter in their production history and has seen support from Josh Wink, Mr G and Skream over the past few months.
'Keep Up Appearances - Remixes' opens with Anthony Collins and Francis Harris' superb Frank & Tony alias taking on 'Seraphim' which results in a tense but understated piece of layered, classic sounding house music while Dana Ruh, fresh from her excellent debut LP on Underground Quality last year, drops an eerie recreation of 'Worship' that draws on spacey synths and unsettling ambience.
Dorisburg, known for outstanding material on Sweden's Aniara amongst others, continues a sterling run of form with a rendition of 'Feel Free' which employs soaring chords to fashion a luscious and elevating take on the original. Rounding off the package is Berlin producer Alan Doe, an artist who debuted on Rue De Plaisance in 2014. Doe's 'Worship' remix is squarely dancefloor-aimed with punchy kicks, smokey effects and teasing keys.

Ricardo Villalobos - "Rabbit Over" (12:15)
Oskar Szafraniec - "Vitality" (feat Infinite Livez) (8:51)
Review: Germany's Rawax, aside from its reissue offshoot, has usually released up and coming artists in the house and techno domains but the label are back with something pretty special for the first chapter of their newly crowned Aira series. Ricardo Villalobos, a man who needs no introduction in the minimal techno game and who sells clubs out week in and week out all over the world, drops "Rabbit Over", a familiarly itchy Villalobos groove with intricate melodic patterns and a driving beat structure. On the flip, Oskar Szafraniec's "Vitality" is similarly stripped and jagged around the edges, a monstrous bassline dominating its bottom-end. Another fine slice of Rawax and an impressive evolution from the label!
