Courtial - "Losing You" (with Errol Knowles) (3:05)
Sounds Of The City Experience - "Getting Down" (4:06)
Review: Weston's curatorial crusade continues as he unearths more criminally overlooked/under-pressed rarities from the golden ages; "Losing You" comes from Courtial and Errol Knowles outstanding 1976 soul jazz album. The most straight up soul joint from the album, it's an instant sweat-fest with real guts behind both the vocals and instrumentation. Flip for the jazz funk whirlwind that is "Getting Down". Taken from their eponymous, once-super rare ($1500 per copy rare) album (also released in 76), it's an instrumental hurricane led by strings, horns and bombastically swung drums. Powerful. Rim & Kasa - "I'm A Song Writer" (3:58)
Rim & The Believers - "I'm Not Going To Let You Go" (3:11)
Rim & The Believers - "Peace Of Mind" (3:52)
Review: Having re-released Rim Kwaku's long lost Rim Arrives album, BBE follow it up with more dusty disco treasures from the Ghanaian hit maker's repertoire. From the blistering horns and thundering drum rolls of the near-nine-minute romp "Shine The Ladies" right the way through the looser, more Afrobeat-focussed "Peace Of Mind" by way of the emphatic Stevie Wonder-style showmanship of "I'm A Songwriter" it's a collection that still sparkles with soul 30 years after they were recorded. If you're unaware of Rim's story, you'd be wise to check it; from Quincy Jones endorsements to homelessness in the space of 24 hours, Rim's tales are as serious as his music is funky.

Candido - "On My Way" (3:08)
Edwin Starr - "Easin' In" (3:12)
Review: The label says it all... Neither of these tracks have ever been released outside the original albums they came on. Until now. The legendary Candido steps up for the A-side with an uptempo, percussion-heavy groove from his 1971 album Beautiful; with big brassy fills and a stripped back, sample-addict's dream breakdown, this still punches as hard now as it did over 40 years ago. Flip for a funk trip from the equally revered Edwin Starr. Taken from his Hell Up In Harlem soundtrack, it's quintessential Blaxploitation funk with slippery bass, sleazy guitars and Edwin's velvet vocals that can go from purring to roaring in 0.03 seconds. Limited to one per customer, jump on this as soon as you can.

Maggie Thrett - "Soupy" (2:58)
De La Soul - "Jenifer Taught Me" (3:51)
Review: Number 30 in the originals series highlights the link between Dynavoice Records and the Daisy Age hip hoppers who sampled many of the label's releases. We are of course talking about Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo, aka De La Soul, with Originals wisely squaring attentions on the Northern Soul monster "Soup" by Maggie Thrett and the De La classic "Jenifa Taught Me" which featured ample sampleage. This Originals edition of "Soup" is the first time it's been available in the 7" format since it's initial release in 1965 and is the sort of cut you can drop in a funk jam and see the crowd melt. What more is there to say about "Jenifa Taught Me"? It's a classic mate!

King Soul-omon's Mine (3:06)
Sock It Silly (4:32)
Review: The first of two big edit 45s: Titanic Bristol funk from the infrequent partnership of Monkey Boxing's Mako and serial editor Mr Bristow: "King Soul-omon's Mine" takes a cover of heavily-sampled, well-known Lee Dorsey/Allen Toussaint gem and adds a subtle contemporary swing. Flip for a full band breakdown over a pristine break as "Sock It Silly" strips down the science of every funk tune ever. Vinyl-only; this one's a keeper.

Give It Up, Turnit A Loose (previously unreleased) (4:31)
It's A Family Thang (previously unreleased) (4:35)
Review: Obscure Californian group The Real Thing (not the Liverpool 4 piece ) who recorded for US label Whiz enjoy a very special spotlight on Super Disco Edits. Both cuts previously unreleased; they're as fizzy as the product they share a slogan with... "Give It Up & Turn It Loose" takes James Brown to turbo charged pastures, tearing up the funk rule book so rapidly they've got friction burns. "It's A Family Thang" brings us back down to earth with such unified tightness and positivity it would make Sly and the Stones blush. The real deal.

Review: Napoleon Cherry is perhaps not the unknown name that Music From Memory excels at celebrating - PPU released a 12" of his brilliantly low-key soul workout "When You Had The Chance" earlier this year - but the Philadelphian musician's releases are certainly suitably hard to find. This career retrospective offers a mix of impossible-to-find tracks, many from his deliciously rare 1990 debut full-length, and previously unheard cuts. It portrays Cherry as a master of warm, evocative, Balearic soul and lo-fi synthesizer funk, whose analogue-rich releases were always out-of-step with the musical trends developing around him. Crucially, all 10 of these tracks are superb, making Walk Alone yet another essential Music From Memory purchase.

Break's All Tight (2:46)
Mama's Little Breakbeat (2:33)
Review: The second of two big break edit 45s: World champion monkey boxer Mako and decorated turntablist Mr Bristow get real with two more funk obscurities. "Breaks All Tight" struts with a classic Motown feeling and a vocal power that's not dissimilar to Lee Fields. "Mama's Little Breakbeat" keeps it real with a swinging twist on Kris Peterson's "Mama's Little Baby". Both absolutely tickle the dance. Vinyl only, too.

Soul On Top (feat Louis Baker) (3:34)
Diegos Theme (edit) (3:26)
Review: Fresh from teasing fans with his highly limited run of mixtape CDs, UK beat-muncher Boca 45 releases an equally limited 45 with one brand new original and a stone cold classic from his 2006 LP Vertigo Sounds. "Soul On Top" sees him tap into the sleazy smoky soul sound with New Zealand singer Louis Baker, all horns, bass and golden vocals. "Diego's Theme", meanwhile, is one of his hallmark early releases; a sweaty, dramatic Latin firecracker it hasn't dated one bit in nine years. And probably never will.

Dynamite In The Still Of The Night (feat Anne Frankenstein) (3:41)
Pearl Baby, Pearl (feat E) (2:38)
Review: One man funk machine Gene Dudley dishes up two more sticks of groove gelignite from his album Zambidoose earlier this year. Frequent collaborator Anne Frankenstein fronts the soul train chugger "Dynamite In The Still Of The Night", giving space for Gene's constant stop/start teases. "Pearl Baby, Pearl" whacks with more of a Booker T twang thanks to the lavish use of Hammond keys while E provides a rich gravelly vocal sheen. Grab this, then check the album if you haven't already - Gene is modern funk genius.

Gravel Rash (3:20)
Pie Warmer (3:30)
Review: Premiership Aussie funkers Cookin On 3 Burners take us back to 2002 and their first ever single. Naturally it still sounds just as timeless 13 years later. "Gravel Rash" has such an authentic feel it wouldn't have gone amiss on a Booker T & The MGs record thanks to its lavish Hammond slapping and playful twist on the lead. "Pie Warmer" has more of a live jam feel to it where the clam-tight guitars go toe-to-toe with the organs over a fractious breakbeat. Out of press for quite some time, this is a piece of modern funk history right here.

Art Blakey - "Stretching" (J Rocc edit) (3:43)
Digable Planets - "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" (4:18)
Review: With a refreshed label design, the Originals series seems in no trouble of running out of steam any time soon as catalogue number 30 hones into view. The 29th rinky dinky Originals squares the focus on Art Blakey's "Stretching" with one of the world's best DJs, J Rocc, offering up a fine 45 treatment of the Jazz classic on the A Side. Representing the sample flip on the flip is Digable Planets and "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" which deftly pulled out the horns and bassline from Blakey's original and looped them up for what is now regarded as an early '90s hip hop classic.

Spies Are Watching Me (7:15)
Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

Review: Blackcat 80 copies only for the world white vinyl repress for the world . "Come Back To Me" takes us back to 1976 as Native American soul girl Cheyenne's rich, gut-driven delivery tops a seriously tight funk cake that's flavoured with blistering horns and crisp guitars. "Take Me To Your Home" takes us even further back to 1973. Taken from their debut album Now Hear This, it's a sparkling, jazz-tinted psychedelic slice that harbours some seriously warm keys. Guaranteed to remain broad and beautiful for a long, long time to come. Grab it while you can.

Dedy Dread & DJ Rebel - "Mambo Perez" (3:20)
Panama Cardoon & Audry Funk - "EGO" (4:15)
Review: Resense return with another bubbling cauldron of international funk; "Mambo Perez" is a muted trumpet freakfrest with a one way ticket to Cuba by way of Lisbon. Precision diced edits and a really crisp break ensure chaos wherever you play this in the world. "EGO" flicks the samba switch as Greek Panama Cardoon gets wild with Mexican Audry Funk giving her stacks of space for a powerful vocal-focussed hip-slinker. Stunning contemporary funk for all quarters.

No Turning Back (The Reflex Revision - full length version) (6:48)
Review: Freestyle mainstays Speedometer are back... And they're brandishing a brand new album. "No Turning Back" is the lead title track. Featuring velvet vocals and sharp scat spits from James Junior, it's a soft-but-stern statement of intent that drags us in gradually and refuses to let us go once we're hooked. Those hungry for Speedometer's more upbeat party feels, flip for "Orisha's Party" where the groove is so tight and fizzy you can't but think of MJ's "Wanna Be Startin' Something". For good measure, The Reflex has also joined the party with a luxurious extended house shakedown that's primed for the season and beyond.
